- This is a review of three tents I'm considering for the Pacific Crest Trail. They include the Durston X-Mid 1 Pro, Zpacks Duplex, and Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL1.
Good practical review. Better review than most others out there.
The Durston is a really well thought out design that also looks to be stable in high winds. For an alpine environment that one seems like the best choice.
I have an X-Mid 2P poly, a Duplex, and a Copper Spur 2P, so I really related to your comparison. Thank you!I agree with most of your conclusions. I wish my Duplex was an X-Mid Pro, and I will probably make that happen eventually.
Each one has its positives. I love the living space in the Copper Spur, but it’s showing its age sooner than expected, and the X-Mid will be its ultimate replacement.
The Duplex has lightened my pack on some key backpacking trips, but the design is unrefined compared to some of the newer competitors.
The X-Mid will be my primary tent for bikepacking, car camping, and for backpacking trips where I don’t want to put the wear on a more expensive DCF tent. I feel that it is the most storm worthy of the 3.
Your Duplex pitch needs some work and practice. :) And I don't know why you're throwing a double-wall tent into the mix for comparison. I've used all 3 tents and for a CDT hike I went back to the Copper Spur just because of the condensation issues you don't mention for the other two. Plus the Copper Spur is free standing and noticeably warmer.
Great comparison video. For the Durston, on the corner lines did you replace the lines or add to the existing lines. Thanks
Thanks. I removed the existing and added new ones.
Hey Doug, I just received my new X Mid Pro 1 and can not wait to set it up.
Hopefully, spring will hit the Wasatch soon.
I have been using the Copper spur 2 and Copper spur 1 night glow for the past several and
I absolutely love both of those tents .
Great living space and relatively lightweight.
I have been intrigued by Durston's tents since I first saw one, and once I heard that Dan was coming out with the X pro 1, I figured I'd pull the trigger on one.
I like the fact that it's made of Dyneema and that it only weighs 1 pound .
For now, I will hold onto the Copper Spurs simply because it's nice to have options.
As far as the Duplex is concerned, I have never really been too interested.
If I need a bit more room, I'm okay carrying the slight extra weight of the Copper Spur 2 .
Best of luck on the PCT !
That’s like comparing a Ferrari to a Lamborghini to a Winnebago ha.
With the Duplex being the winnebago.
