FINALLY!!! You guys finally did BiSH (pronounced like fiche, or fish if that's easier😂). My number 1 Japanese group neck to neck with Babymetal. Like Babymetal, they mix many genres, but instead of metal, they mix it with pop punk. I discovered them by accident in 2016 when I went to Japan for Babymetal's Tokyo Dome concert. I spent a week going to live underground idol shows, being shown around by Japanese Babymetal friends, showing me things I never would've seen or experienced otherwise. THAT was the real rabbit hole. Babymetal opened a door to a wonderland of music I never knew existed. I hope you do more BiSH. They have some really amazing deep music. I recommend Landscape , Orchestra, or Promise The Star next.
BiSH (beesh) were the premier alt Idol group under the WACK umbrella until they ended last year. AiNA the End and Ayuni-D (PEDRO) were members. They are both well worth checking out. The original MV for Giant Killers is full of bloody mayhem
BiSH rhymes with fish, so you were right first time. 🙂 It is a contraction of Brand-new idol Shit. Musically, they are best categorised as pop punk, but as with most Japanese artists, there are no rules in terms of genre boundaries. There is very little metal in what they do (IMO), but they do get quite heavy in places and quite a few of their songs get intense (as you see here). There are occasional harsh vocals / literal screaming, usually from LingLing (the one with the interesting hair style), but mostly it is sung as J-pop. There are six members and all share vocals equally. Yukako Love Deluxe quit before they made their debut, but did contribute vocals to some early tracks. Hug Mii left quite early too, as she felt she was too old for the group, but you'll see/hear her in early material. The group's leader was CENT CHiHiRO CHiTTiii, arguably the groups best vocalist - she now performs solo as CENT with a bigger pop focus. AiNA THE END has fairly distinctive vocals and was already a successful solo artist before BiSH disbanded. She is one of Japan's rising stars and has recently won an major award for her acting debut in the film Kyrie, in which she plays the title role (not to mention a full album of associated music). AiNA also handled choreography for BiSH and wrote the music for the BiSH track Rhythm, as well as writing her solo material. AYUNi D was the group's youngest member, starting as a teen. She expressed an interest in learning to play bass, so the company got her the instrument and booked her first gig for six months later. That lead to her forming the punk band PEDRO, who are still active today. MOMOKO GUMi COMPANY has recently launched her solo pop career and is also a published author. She wrote a lot of lyrics for BiSH, although all members contributed some lyrical content. Hashiyasume Atsuko (wearing glasses) has gone into TV, mostly light entertainment but also a bit of acting. LingLing has become a visual artist under the name MISATO ANDO. However you look t it, BiSH was crammed with talent. The BABYMETAL comparison is fair - they are both alternative idol groups (as are PassCode). Traditional idol groups produce sweet pop songs and aspire to be perfect personalities. Alternative idol groups explore other styles of music and often present imperfect images. The groups under WACK, particularly the original BiS, were quite funny, rude, cheeky and smutty (by Japanese standards at least) - you're never far from a dick joke at WACK. There's a lot to explore. I'd highly recommend watching the first few minutes of the UA-cam video 'Japan's Most Controversial Idol Group: The Story of Brand-new Idol Society (BiS) (2010 - 2014)', as that'll capture the difference between idol and alt-idol. (The whole video is excellent, a great introduction to BiS, WACK and all the groups that followed - there are no musical spoilers.) By the way, GiANT KiLLERS has a wild MV, although it'll distract you from the music. I'd say it's a must see, even if there's no reaction. WACK groups have a lot of out there MVs and given only a few live performances have a live backing band, you'll be forced to try a few if you keep exploring. For BiSH, the MV for NON TiE-UP is impressive and I'm also a fan of SMACK baby SMACK and MONSTERS. For live I'd take a look at FREEZE DRY THE PASTS and Am I FRENZY?? for things that are a bit out there. My guess is you'll find BiSH a bit too pop for your tastes and the effort to get the reactions on UA-cam probably won't be worth the number of views you'll get, but thanks for giving them a try. Sorry for this huge wall of text!
One of my favorite BiSH songs. I'm usually not an idol fan (even alt-idol) at all but I make an exception for BiSH for several reasons: first they have really amazing songs (and a great composer) and second their individualities are mostly talented, especially Aina The End (her solo career is even much better than what she did in BiSH IMO) and Ayuni D (her indie-rock band PEDRO, with the amazing veteran guitarist Hisako Tabuchi, is really good). Btw, I recommend to watch the official MV of this song, it's a mini-movie and it should shock you a little 🙂
PEDRO is my favorite off shoot from BiSH though I love what Cent and Aina are doing as well, but PEDRO is so legit. Tricot just announced a show with PEDRO in May in Japan. I'd love to see that show, but it's about a month and a half late after I leave Japan.
The official video for this is worth watching, a little (disturbing) story... They each have unique voices, and their solo stuff is good too. If you do more I'd suggest Non Tie-up (Official video) for the cinematography, amazing distorted strings and a good chance to hear their individual voices (and interesting lyrics!), and for a bit more punky fun 'Smack Baby Smack', 'Finally Died' 'Lie Lie Lie' and 'Deadman'. They've stretched across many genres, but I think their punky stuff is the best.... The whole Alt-idol scene is a big rabbit hole to go down!
Alt idol is all about an idol group doing alternative styles of music over the normal kawaii pop/j-pop. So an idol group that does all metal like Babymetal are technically alt idols. Same with PassCode and doing electronicore.
One of the girls named Aina The End continues as a soloist. She recently made an appearance on the youtube channel "The First Take". But you have to look for "Kyrie" because her name "Aina The End" is only written in Katakana. It's quite a different vibe to this song.
When they're described as alternative, they mean alt-idol, which is an idol group that does heavier music and has a less cutesy image than a normal pop idol group. Alt-idol was pioneered by BiS, who were not as commercially successful as BiSH, but are known for their crazy/controversial stunts. For an example of their antics check out some live footage from their collab with the noise band Hijokaidan which was called BiS Kaidan: ua-cam.com/video/rukQPyZrV8w/v-deo.html
I love BiSH, they were alot of fun. They have a bunch of these fun live shows on youtube aswell if you want to get more into BiSH, which you really should. They can go really punky and noisy and they can go full on anime rock. Their crowd interractions are golden. Earlier in their career they would even pull fans up on stage to abuse them the whole song. Also theres actually 6 of them, all sing though 3 of them can be considered the main singers which is Aina the End (cool voice), Chitti (soft voice), and Ayuni D (high voice). One can be considered the main screamer which is Ling Ling. Momo is the blonde one the comments called cute, and Hashiyasume Atsuko is the one with the glasses. Hug Mii was a member but she left very early on. This song is probably the most like Babymetal they get, most of their other songs go more into punk noise jpop or j-rock. They have made intro songs for multiple animes. The alternative tag is kind of jpop specific since they're not necissarily alternative artists how we might interpret that in the west, they're alternative idols which is a direct reflection of jpop. Jpop has all these ideas of being cute and pure and innocent while the alternative scene is all about the opposite. They scream and swear and have raunchy lyrics and all that. Thats really what it means to be an alternative idol, the music could be anything as long as it embodies the idea of being an anti-idol. BiSHs succsessor group is a good example of this. They're called ASP which now stands for Anti Society Punks, but originally it stood for An*al S*x P*nis. If you want to get more punky you should really check them out aswell, their earlier stuff is very punk. BiS kind of started the anti-idol wave at the same time that Babymetal was starting out. Babymetal is alternative to jpop musically, but they're not actually a part of the alternative scene, they're very much "normal idols" in comparrison to BiS who started this kind of rebellion against normal jpop. One of their early anti-idol stunts include running naked through the "self-deletion forest" for one of their MVs.
Cool another group for you to go down the rabbit hole with cannot wait to see your journey into this group please check out some of their official release studio videos as well as the live as they are very interesting also in which the story unfolds within the video
BiSH had some interesting songs such as Orchestra and Stereo Future but were a little too Pop Idol for my taste. There were two standout performers in my opinion. Cent is a very good singer IMHO but AiNA The End is a star. I strongly recommend you delve into her solo catalogue. She’s quirky and not afraid to try something outside the norm. Check out Red Birthmark as a starting point and then look at Andromeda with legendary Hotei, of Kill Bill soundtrack fame.
BiSH was one of the most popular alternative idol groups in Japan, just like BABYMETAL. Their last show in 2023 was at Tokyo Dome, only most artists from Japan reach this place. Just like BABYMETAL achieved in 2016.
I think one of their songs that most demonstrates their Punk rock is the song called Smack Baby Smack. The most popular alt idol group right before they disbanded and their final concert was held at Tokyo Dome proper. It's also why they decided to disband at that time since they wanted BiSH to leave at the top instead of sliding back into a smaller fanbase.
For all the flack he gets from some westerners, including fans of his groups, he's out performed the competition significantly. Multiple #1 albums and singles cannot be argued with. Also, the queues of folk lining up to participate in his --torture-- audition camps tells its own story. AiNA is the only BiSH member currently on WACK's books. Other companies are better positioned to make more of the talent that's emerged and I'm sure AiNA will move on eventually. It doesn't seem like anyone is locked in to contracts they aren't happy with. Of course we all know WACK is Shit - there's even a song about it.

Oh yes, 'Monsters' and deffo 'OTNK' need checking out - and preferably the music videos on all, so much goes in to them it's worth it!
Nice choices - I picked a similar list of recs. 👍

BiSH (Brand-new idol Shit)
Genre: Punk Pop
we gotta get a the black dahlia murder song on here, brandon ellis is hands down one of the best lead guitarists of my generation, his phrasing and not selection is top tier not to mention some of the cleanest playing ive ever heard along with trevors lyrical virtuosity and poetic sound is like no other, i suggest nightbringers, sunless empire, widowmaker, or verminous 🤘
Watanabe is probably the worst head of a big idol management company I know of. Take out all the redeeming qualities of Koba-metal and you get Watanabe. I'm more surprised that some of the BiSH ladies are actually sticking with WACK instead of leaving.
BiSH stands for Brand-new Idol Shit. In katakana it's spelled like bishu since the u is silent and that's how they would phonetically spell it. Agreed, Watanabe is kind of a dick. But his contracts are probably extremely strong and complicated to terminate ...
For all the flack he gets from some westerners, including fans of his groups, he's out performed the competition significantly. Multiple #1 albums and singles cannot be argued with. Watanabe is like Vince Mcmahon, his character is worse than he is.
