The new elite is super cool as I tried it at rei. I own the original moonlite and prefer it much better. The new elite has you sitting so low that it is a challenge to lift your head up constantly after a tiring hike. The original sits higher and much more comfortably even though it does dig somewhat into my shoulders. All in all, the new elite is perfect for gram counters.
The "Chair Zero" with it's optional base is actually heavier than the Nemo Moonlight elite with it's base. When you are comparing weights, it has to be apples to apples comparison. I own both of them and have measured the both on my kitchen scale. FYI: Here are the actual facts on the weights: Nemo Moonlite Elite including groundsheet Weighs 22.1 ounces (18.6oz for chair only), whereas the Chair Zero weighs 25.4 ounces including it's optional ground sheet (18.8oz for chair only). The Moonlite Elite is also $5 cheaper than the Chair Zero + it's optional base.
Yes they do. Everyone complains of the feet sinking in, whether you're on snow, sand, or mud. With the base it's very stable and worth bringing @@ExploreTrekAdventure
Can only see using that base on sand or snow and maybe dry leaves. But on mud or wet ground that cover is going to be a mess. Plus the straps are all on the bottom too.
Love my REI Flexlite BUT…. As yall know the base is very narrow and can easily tip on messy ground surfaces… benefit is cost (goes on sale at times) and lighter. Helinox never goes on sale unfortunately but more stable. I just picked up the Nemo moonlite elite today and can’t wait to take it on my backpacking trip
239 / 5.000 Thank you for the detailed review of the Nemo chairs and the comparison to competitors. Very detailed and objective without highlighting the manufacturers' advertising promises. Very helpful! 😀
So glad I found your video, I was going to buy the Elite, but after the real world sit tests you both provided, I am now going to pass on the Elite and seek out the original Nemo chair. I hope I can find one! Thanks for the great review! Comfort wise, the CLIQ chair is so comfortable, but just weighs too much to consider it as a backpacking chair.
Dan Becker just interviewed the owner of Nemo and he talked about the design features that they put into the chair. Was interesting to get that perspective. I dislike the dubious weight advertising significantly. Such a disappointment- it’s not like us gram weenies won’t weigh things, I mean c’mon!
Will the base on the elite fit the original feet also? Wonder if Nemo would sell just the base for originals that want the added flexibility for sandy surfaces
For me the difference is that the 1-pound chair will go in the backpack when I am on hiking or backpacking trips, and the 2-pound chair will stay in the gear closet.
I personally wouldn’t let 1 pound dictate if I was comfortable or not. My pack typically weighs 25 pounds on multi day hikes but I ruck with 40. Yes I can go farther with 25 but I doubt very much 26 would slow me down.
Do you have a favorite backpacking chair or are you team sit pad?
Really useful review guys. Great to get two very practical and different perspectives.
Thank You! 😀

Have you had a chance to test out the chair platforms and do they really keep you from sinking?

@@johncramer9564which chair do you like more?
@@enkeierick The Moonlight Elite is the chair that comes along on backpacking trips. The Helinox Zero is a backup/ loaner chair now.

Gram weenie 🤣. Pretty sure we need that on a t-shirt. We will have to watch that interview.

Helinox and some off brands sell bases but I don’t see that Nemo sells just the base.
I have the original moonlight chair and my bag weight with food is 22lbs. So I’ll be taking the stronger more comfortable chair.
The original is a great chair. Oh. And a 22lb pack weight is awesome! We hover around 26lbs.
Helinox Chair Zero Highback
We would like to try one of those out. Haven’t been able to find one in the store yet.

It might have been helpful to mention your waist size. With risk to an over share albeit
I wear a women's 10 (US) and Greg is a men's 34-36 (depending on the brand). 😁
Thanks! Happy trails
yes lite weight but too low sitting hard to get up from and terrible for fishing....
