    Streetwear is art. Express art by wearing what you like and show the world who you are, not because of the hype.

    I think the term street wear is turning into a massive corny cliche fu(|< fest. To me it’s just me wear or you wear where you take pieces that you like, regardless of brand, price point, or hype value and throw them all together to express your individuality. Once you let the so called style icons dictate your individual style then you lose.

      Heat Pursuit definitely we are starting to figure out substyles under the whole "streetwear" umbrella that starting to branch out that define themselves

      True. Streetwear is supposed to be about individuality and standing out, now it's about conformity and following trends. If people would wear what they like instead of what's hype then the consumer will control the industry

    to me street wear is cultivated from a more personal aspect of yourself. like take for instance a skateboarder who is into old school hip hop and digital art have a certain "style" to them because 1) they look for things that are easy to skate in 2) they often rep their local skate shop merch 3) they take aspects of 80-90s hip hop culture as well as self customized things and combine them. that to me is the epitome of "street wear" expressing yourself artistically through comfortable clothing. anything else is is just vain

    Some streetwear brands rub me the wrong way. It’s not the appropriation of counter-cultures that bothers me, but rather the social recuperation that it represents. What was once a shocking statement is now commodified, and thus loses impact. The small labels that operate on a “for us by us” mantra avoid this, and I’ve seen many of these in Harajuku, but when it catches the eye of venture capitalists we all lose something. Well, not the rich lady on the subway decked out in Louis Vuitton and Baby Milo. She’s probably considered “edgy” amongst her colleagues, whatever that means

    Got home about 20 mins ago, been out since about 3:30pm yesterday afternoon just enjoying the fact I don't have to be back at work till Sunday night. It might be cos I've been out and am now well and truly twisted/wiped/totally fucking wasted, but I really liked the vid and your views and attempted explanation of street wear. I'm not really sure 'street wear' can be explained fully, as you pointed out it's different from country to country, different from coast to coast, different from state to state different from county to county. I think the easiest way to describe it is, clothing that does not follow the 'catwalk fashion houses'. I'm off to bed now really having trouble focusing on anything, no doubt when I wake up I'll re-read this post and delete it. FYI, it's taken me about 50 mins to write this.
    Good vid, I really like your channel, you come across as a decent dude.

  • @easyemu1511
    @easyemu1511 6 років тому

    Learning a lot from these videos. I think streetwear, to me, is an expression of an interest or passion in a creative way through clothing and accessories. The reason the definition is so contentious is because the expression of 'creativity' is subjective as well as the value placed on a person's interests or passions.

    I remember back in the early 80s underground clubs in NYC. I worked near the village and loved checking out the latest fashion till one day I came across this silk green button down shirt and pants...Immediately brought it (because clothing in the Village were limited), I remember wearing it out and felt a part of me were expressing a deeper aspect of myself..... Back than in the Village no one cared what you looked like... Like Astor place (haircut shop)..... Streetwear reminds me of that period!

    Great video and always an interesting discussion point, especially with things seemingly inching closer and closer to the tipping point. I remember having this discussion nearly 15 years ago and someone rephrasing the then buzz-word term "street wear" to "street where?" Even then, the connection between the fashion and the culture it claimed to be connected to was being blurred. And I'd be willing to bet that this question has been being discussed for since the term "street wear" became commonly accepted. And I'm equally as sure that there will never be a definitive answer.
    Here is my current take on things (which seems to be ever-changing)... "Street wear" is to fashion what "hip hop" is to music. Both are nothing more than terminology coined by someone in order to define something that they thought separated themselves from their predecessors. I'm sure they made sense at one point, but since their inception, they have grown/evolved/become blurred so much by each new player in the game, each new consumer, and each dollar pumped into the system that they do no justice in describing anything anymore. A bit contrary to what Heron Preston is quoted as saying, I actually think the term "street wear" (and "hip hop") is too broad. However, until either some new terminology is coined or the emphasis is taken off of the current terminology, "street wear" will continue to mean something different to everyone. For each person, that meaning will likely harken back to whatever it was that first attracted them to it in the first place. And as things change and evolve, it'll continue to be difficult for each person to see eye to eye with the next and agree as to what the real definition is. Meanwhile, we're all as equally right as we are wrong.
    That being said, I've concluded nothing and only confused myself further. Buy what you like, call it what you like, and for the love of whatever god you believe in, please stop spending thousands of dollars on used box logo tshirts.

  • @lukmanamir5755
    @lukmanamir5755 7 років тому

    Totally on point i would say with your explanation on what streetwear is. Whilst having different points I would still say that "streetwear without culture is just fashion" as the brand itself tries to reflect on what culture it is. Brands like supreme are still skate-ish in terms of aesthetic and perception but the consumers have changed. It's now resellers, high fashion folks, hypebeasts and streetwear enthusiasts that flock these brands. I'm not saying its bad since its definitely the norm but like you said, nowadays if a brand is cosigned by a influencer like a hip hop artist. Its definitely going to get everyone's attention.

    I think streetwear is fashion that was born on the street, it's the mix of all lifestyles, urban, skate, hip-hop and many more mixed into one. Streetwear is a way that people express their personality and creativity, not hype.

    I don’t like to describe streetwear by other cultures but by words. it’s just, really diverse. anyways here’s the words I’d say streetwear is a form of fashion that revolves around a few couple terms
    Hype
    Lifestyle (comfortable to wear, hence baggy clothes, hoodies)
    Mimicry
    Non-conformity

    Casual clothing falls under two types imo.
    Street wear: focus is on brand rather than the piece it’s self. it’s the brand that makes its shine and is something you wear when you are doing something in an urban area (supreme, Adidas, Armani exchange).
    Smart wear: This focuses more on the patterns, textures and types of pieces, rather than brand. This is something you’d wear going to town, family function, a date etc. (H and m, Zara, Topman)

    streetwear is the art of self expression through clothing that was derived from the so called 'street culture' of people like skaters, bboy dancers,goths,etc. with this being said it has absolutely been saturated by the likes of high end fashion lines that are taking the culture of streetwear and using to make their own millions,not necessarily by killing the game, so yeah haha

      it's ruined the image of it for sure, but the essence is still there, i'm still hoping that the OG brands reitroduce the essence of streetwear so people actually look into it more and understand it more. But unfortunately it always happens with subcultures, it happened to punk and hippie too, big brands or entities make a thing of it and there it is, hype and all the essence is forgotten

    I think streetwear has pretty much become a stereotype. Most normal people cannot even afford all this hyped bullcrap. And apart from that it is mostly ugly af.
    Real streetwear should be imo reliable, affordable, good looking, comfortable and mostly for yourself! Not to show other people that you can afford sound ugly shoes on which is written wtf they are because otherwise no one would know. I think out shouldn't be about flexing because that always becomes cheesy and pathetic and stereotypical (like ten year old kids wearing fake yeezys). Streetwear itself should sort that out for it's own sake to become what it was and not a weak shadow of itself.
