Cool build. The whole time I kept worrying about how much it would weigh, but 120 lbs isn’t horrendous. Maybe try to make an ultralight version with included solar panel to charge an eBike for your next version?
Actually 120lbs is a lot of extra weight. It’s great to recognise this man’s can do attitude and his building skills, but actually this is an incredibly impractical use of materials to be towing behind a bicycle and the only saving grace would appear to be that he lives in a VERY flat landscape. 10 out of 10 for effort 0 out of 10 for practicality and use of lightweight design features
Dude. I just stumbled across your video, and you won't believe this, but this has been a fantasy of mine since I was at least 10 years old. I grew up on the road in a large RV (literally, never had a house) and I've traveled to 45 of 50 states, and 2 Canadian provinces before I was age 16. I'm now successful in my career and am a homeowner, unlike my parents. But I always dreamed of one day traveling the country living simply in a small bicycle camper. It's just this thrilling thought...
Oh my gosh! What am amazing build!! I have never seen anything like this. These should be sold as a kit in every hardware or bicycle shop everywhere! Very detailed and easy to follow instructions. Mind blown. Amazing job! Love your channel.
Looks really good! One thing that I would recommend: moving the wheels a few inches forward would help take the weight off of the hitch. As it currently rides, there's going to be a lot of stress on that hitch. If you have it closer to balanced on the wheels, it will reduce the strain; it will probably be even easier to tow as well.
Balancing the tongue load can be fine tuned by where you pile the heavy stuff, particularly the water. Just shift it forward or aft as needed to have a moderate tongue weight.
Moving wheels more to the front would also have the camper follow the bike better on tight corners, use less space ;) :) And yeah, i would have had the wheels so it was balanced when it was empty, and then just keep it balanced when it's packed :)
Awesome build. I would think a few big weight savers would be aluminum tubing instead of steel and instead of plywood you could have used foam block and then glassed it all together in a similar manner. There are Facebook groups dedicated to building campers out of foam, and they render an extremely lightweight trailer. Composites are another great option, we use them in our adventure trailer line, very strong, can't rot, won't soak up water or mildew, decent screw retention. There are some very lightweight, easy to install door options too from the RV industry...compartment doors being lighter than a small entry door, but still able to lock, watertight and VERY lightweight. What I really like about your build...you used common materials that most people can find, use and afford. Great job!!
Most aluminum is very soft most of the time, unless you want the good expensive stuff. Steel is more practical for heavy duty usage like so. Aluminum could work, but the life span and durability would be greatly reduced.
Damn Dude, you didn't miss a thing, job well done. As a fellow cyclist, absolutely agree, 1/4" or 5/16" ply would have saved a load of weight. Also using aluminium square tube instead of steel would have dropped a good bit of weight as well, that coupled with thinner plywood, you could maybe get it down closer to 70lbs - time for a V2 already ;-)
Lynx, haha what's a V2 me being a Harley Rider and the e-bike builder enthusiast V2 can only mean V-Twin to me or V8 VH can't either be a small block Chevy big block too and tomato juice nutrients eight v + 8 veggies Plus 8 nutrients V8 I'm a genius but yeah man I'm building one like that too I'm copying is good job by the way huh it's got a lot of kudos on this one and I'm going to wrap the canvas around the bottom like you suggested and use aluminum tubing and quarter inch plywood or 8 in I don't think they make it in⅛", paneling who thinks paneling would be strong enough with the canvas glued over it anybody out there father and to read mine, p ty answer those that don't know about it it's like Stephen King I'm watching under the dome on Pluto TV for free greatest I don't know how I missed this one it's already got three seasons but I say it's right there with breaking bad so far yeah I got to take my little generator on my voyage solar 300 watt charge my bike as I'm riding on the highway route 66 baby Texas or bust...
I know huh links I did a great job very pleasant fella too I'm already looking for Wheels Schwinn for a couple hundred bucks to make some pretty nice cheap/ inexpensive ones too small for me but a good platform Texas or bust I'm going to need some sleep time woop woop I mean just to use the parts off and cut it down everything's there just make it bigger
I’m holding back tiny tears of joy at the love of detail, like it’s the final scene of a beautiful film. This is so, so very cool. Absolute incredibleness...ness..es.
I am Swedish so I always take of my shoes before I goes in to something, so I had built a small box just under (and to the side of) the door for my shoes and also bring one of those rubber mat you use in a car to place just under the door when I stop, in that way you can sit in the door opening and relax. And great and creative build.
Yesterday I didn’t know who you were but after randomly finding your build vids an hour ago I am amazed! I like that the background music you use is not annoying. Your voice is also easy to listen to. You speak clearly and at the right speed. Such talent and skill. Thank you for sharing with the world. I will donate if I can figure it out. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😊
Definitely a cool watch but mostly bc of the build process itself, as an usable product i think the disadvantages would outweight the advantages (dragging a 100+ pound trailer seems much harder than assembling and disassembling a camping tent carried in a bag rack for example)
can always get an electric converter kit to help on long rides plus with something like this having a hefty battery would be useful, now a days you can get regenerative power from pedaling and use that power on hills or even cooking etc.. which actually makes this incredibly efficient considering all the storage space you get when your not in the trailer.
Really well built. Had concerns about the weight and possibly overbuilding of it. Double layerer of coroplast might be a interesting alternative to the ply shell. Liked the old school glued canvas, just like they used to do with boats and campers long ago. Oh and steam/heat the inside bend of the wood not the outside, the heat allows the fibers to compress allowing it to bend.
Those were exactly my thoughts -- overbuilt and heavy. With the exception of the wheels, this would probably work just fine as a motorcycle or car camper trailer. The final weight of 120 lbs does seem to be more than would be comfortable to pull with a bike, but of course this would depend on the rider. My extreme biking days are behind me...I get winded walking up the stairs. But for a young guy like Drew it seems to be the right balance between weight and sturdiness. I have seen many other bike camp trailers here on UA-cam, and using coroplast as a shell does certainly have its advantages -- it's waterproof and it's nearly weightless. But one thing I know for sure, if I was trying to sleep outside in a bike camper on a cold, wet or windy night, I'd pick Drew's design anyday. I'm glad I found Drew's channel and I can't wait to see what he's built so far.
Mr dkruitz, I have to disagree with you on the steam/heat commit. He had relieved the compression side of the bend with the saw cuts. He did exactly right heating the outside so he could 'stretch' the outside fibers of the plywood. Turned out great, don't ya think?
I DIY a trailer out of industrial aluminium extrusions, used the same bike trailer coupler.. unfortunately it broke when I used it less than 300km.... if your trailer is over 25kg, change to steel It may be safer to make a latch.Share 2 experiences with you 1. Your drawbar angle range is too small. There will be friction when turning right... 2. The connection of the trailer wheel axle needs to be strengthened, which can be bolded or made into a 2-point connection. These are my experiences...have a nice trip..
Beautiful ! maybe you could put a removable hitch that you could move to the back or front depending on which way the wind was coming, at you,or against you. Maybe pull it with an e-bike and have a solar panel on the top for phone charging and e-bike charging. But it's really cool like it is. Good job
Definitely is cool! I've seen some people with ebike camping setups. They pull out 2 solar panels and say it takes a few hours to charge fully. With an ebike, the solar panels installed on the roof, and an extra battery or two stored in the trailer, I could see this going 25-30 mph for an entire day. That could be 2-300 miles easily. Obviously that isn't ideal when you're on a bike and it would probably only be 50 miles before your back and ass were killing you sitting it, but super cool nonetheless.
1:28 Quick fab tip for squareness: Measure diagonally, from corner to corner. When the numbers are as close as you can get them, the corners are as close to 90 deg as you're gonna get. Easy to do if you don't trust your square, too.
@@DrewBuildsStuff I have a design for a duel bike, I ride down hill and I always wondered if I broke my back how would I still ride? A bike wheel chair? Not yet!!! Two frame's mounted together with driver's compartment. That's my idea, I'd love to show you...
This was really cool to watch. I also wondered if an aluminum frame to reduce weight would be good. I loved the silicone sealant in the screw holes to reduce the chance of leaking, and I think it will also reduce screw loosening with all the bouncing and rattling the camper will experience on and off road. If you had a small Jackery on your shelf, you could wall-mount a small fan, the kind that can reposition to any orientation, to help you with air flow while sleeping, and potentially reduce condensation from your breath by aiming it to push air out one of the windows. Very interesting vid.
@@jamesdeegan7365 You can weld aluminium with the mig welder that he already has. Just use pure argon shielding gas. I built many parts of my scratchbuilt 'kit car' this way...I didn't make the spaceframe chassis from ally though, it's too prone to stress fractures..it would be fine for this application though
I love it. Well done. If I were to offer any suggestions it would be to install a invisible screen magnetic door so that when you are camping, you may leave the door open for cool night air. Also a few vents that you could open or close would be great too. Awesome job.
I agree. My other suggestion would be to add some blinds or dark curtains or some kind of window coverings so that if you were camping somewhere and did not want to wake up when the sun came up, you could sleep in until you were ready to get up. Or wear a sleep mask, I suppose, though I have not seen too many men wear them, I don’t know why they could not.
Amazing! Using the foam on the outside of the trailer! Cuts also, some things seem obvious except not the same when a person is within the project! Nice work!

@@jlongmasbartholomew Hi I'm a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints and I have a question for you. Why was it necessary for God to "command" Nephi to kill Laban to get the brass plates? The information on these plates would be included on the gold plates that Joseph Smith was supposed to have translated directly from. God himself knew he would be asking Nephi to break one of the 10 Commandments "Thou shalt not kill". Nephi found Laban drunk and then was commanded to slay him and to cut off Laban's head. Book of Mormon 1 Nephi Chapter 4:7-12,15-16,18 7. Nevertheless I went forth, and as I came near unto the house of Laban I beheld a man, and he had fallen to the earth before me, for he was drunken with wine. 8. And when I came to him I found that it was Laban. 9. And I beheld his sword, and I drew it forth from the sheath thereof; and the hilt thereof was of pure gold, and the workmanship thereof was exceedingly fine, and I saw that the blade thereof was of the most precious steel. 10. And it came to pass that I was constrained by the Spirit that I should kill Laban; but I said in my heart: Never at any time have I shed the blood of man. And I shrunk and would that I might not slay him. 11. And the Spirit said unto me again: Behold the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands. ..... 12. And it came to pass that the Spirit said unto me again: Slay him, for the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands; 15. Yea, and I also thought that they could not keep the commandments of the Lord according to the law of Moses, save they should have the law. 16. And I also knew that the law was engraven upon the plates of brass. 18. Therefore I did obey the voice of the Spirit, and took Laban by the hair of the head, and I smote off his head with his own sword. Why did Nephi have to commit murder? when all he had to do was just take the plates. Laban was drunk and he was in no way capable of stopping Nephi from stealing the plates. We members have recently learnt that Joseph Smith did not translate directly from the gold plates. He used the seer stone that he would place in a hat and parchment with writing would appear on the stone and then he would dictate this to a scribe. The plates remained on the table covered with a cloth through out this process, Joseph did not need the plates to do the translation. So Laban was murdered in cold blood for nothing, and God broke one of his own rules by commanding Nephi to kill Laban.
@@RoBo37enterprises Hello friend, This is 1 Nephi 4:12-17 12 And it came to pass that the Spirit said unto me again: Slay him, for the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands; 13 Behold the Lord slayeth the wicked to bring forth his righteous purposes. It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief. 14 And now, when I, Nephi, had heard these words, I remembered the words of the Lord which he spake unto me in the wilderness, saying that: Inasmuch as thy seed shall keep my commandments, they shall prosper in the land of promise. 15 Yea, and I also thought that they could not keep the commandments of the Lord according to the law of Moses, save they should have the law. 16 And I also knew that the law was engraven upon the plates of brass. 17 And again, I knew that the Lord had delivered Laban into my hands for this cause-that I might obtain the records according to his commandments. One possible reason for this is because Laban committed three serious offenses against Nephi and his brothers. (1) He had falsely accused them of a capital crime (being “robbers,” 1 Nephi 3:13; Deuteronomy 19:16-19). (2) He had stolen their property, thus proving to be a robber himself (1 Nephi 3:25-26; 4:11). (3) He had not listened to the commandments of the Lord (1 Nephi 4:11; Deuteronomy 13:15).9 Thus, Nephi killed a man whom God had delivered into his hands, indicating that he was worthy of death from a divine perspective. Some killings in the Old Testament happened under similar circumstances. For example, the priest Phinehas killed Zimri and Cozbi for violating the law (Numbers 25:8). Amnon had violated his half-sister Tamar (2 Samuel 13:14-17), and his half-brother Absalom killed him because of it (v. 29). Importantly, the Spirit provided yet another rationale for the act: “It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief” (1 Nephi 4:13). The plates of Brass contained 'the law as mentioned in verses 15 and 16. The law is the law of Moses. The gold plates was the record of the Book of Mormon. The Brass plates contained the Mosaic law or the law of Moses, which contained the record of the Ten Commandments. If they did not have these plates, they would not have the commandments, and their descendants would 'dwindle and perish in unbelief'. If this occurred, then the Book of Mormon would cease to exist. If that happened, we would all be dwindling in unbelief, not knowing where to look for truth and light. I hope that answered your question my friend. I wish you well and hope that you have had or will have an amazing day.
Very creative. I especially like the "poor man's fiberglass." If you were to build it again, you would no doubt make a couple of changes, but overall a very well thought out and crafted project.
I saw a few videos where a man used retired political signs to make sleeping quarters. I think I would like to try something like this with my lawnmower trailer.
I am very impressed by your ingenuity. I, myself, have a trailer, though, much smaller. I have four very good suggestions: First, Replace all the inner-tubes with solid rubber tubes. Flats suck. Second: Replace the hitch spring with three steel chain links. You will still have full function of the hitch without the spring stretching (Yes, it will stretch very quickly). Third: Replace your seat with a "cruiser" type spring seat. Fourth and final: Add a bicycle flag to the traffic side of the rear of the trailer. All of this advice is just to add to your enjoyment, comfort, and safety. My rig weighs about the same, but, I do tent camping with stove, fuel, bedding, etc,etc...Happy trails.
When I was a kid my father built 2 wood frame, canvas canoes with the "poor man's fiberglass." That construction style might be a thought if you build another. They were light and really strong.
21:25 "And then I realised if you ever get this stuff on anything it's impossible to get off" - Oh boy can I relate to this. Currently working on a van to campervan conversion and I was using that stuff to plug up the big holes in the wall and also so hard-to-reach voids were somewhat insulated. Never used it before, started spraying it in not realising how much it can expand and before you know it the stuff is everywhere. All over my hands, all over my shirt, shorts, the van floor and at this point I'm thinking "oh well, may as well just keep on going now". So away I go, scooping the stuff up with my bare hands from the van floor and smashing it into the holes I intended to fill. For about 20-25 minutes I was feeling really proud of myself because I was moving faster than I thought I would. I decided to take a break to have a drink and went to wipe my hands and it just didn't come off. I had a big chunk on my leg and pulled it off along with every bloody hair it came into contact with. Then I realised I had some in my beard and actual hair. Freaked out, got in the shower and the stuff just didn't want to come off unless you tore it off. 3 weeks later I still have some stuck on my fingernails that won't come off. I had to get a haircut and the clothes i wore that day had to be thrown in the bin. Lesson learned, however this is the first time I've built something that's not electrical. I could build you a computer but don't ask me to cut you a perfect size piece of wood. Every step is a learning curve for me lol I'll have nightmares of that day for the rest of my life.
Try some nail polish remover on your nails. I remember a few years ago using the stuff while filling holes around the outside of the house and getting some on my hands it was only when I was doing my nails that it melted to a point that I was able to scrap it off, so used it on my skin leaving the hairs on my arms in place took a few goes at it but it did eventually get removed.
My suggestion for improvement would be to drop the axle ( by using your idea of dual-sided axle mounts) that additional 4-6" to make the frame parallel with the hitch hight. The angle its at presently puts almost all of the weight on your rear wheel, by leveling that you will greatly reduce the amount of weight on the rear wheel and should make it easier to pull, plus being lower it should be much more stable.

i ran a additional bar on the outside out my bike wheels on my trailer to keep the axles from bending also lets me use quick release skewers which is nice when i get a trailer flat, and has to side benefit of protecting the wheels through narrow gaps. also, upgraded my quick release to a shimano xt one as they seem to clamp a little bit stronger to the frame to help prevent movement. great build, definitely learned some things from your build. makes me wanna build another, even though the weight on hills sucks but its part of the fun.
I certainly found this a refreshing video to watch from beginning to end! I personally think it would be a great idea for all the homeless to have something like this! Small enough and effective to keep them out the weather minis the bike .
Really cool! If you mounted the tow on the smaller end, you would encounter less wind resistance plus you would get a bigger shove when the wind is coming from behind you. Also, a solar panel on the roof would be great.
Somehow I never saw this one so it's really cool to come back and see this one after watching your newer build of this, and to hear you mention the things you'd probably do different (like adding the box for the wheels). It's amazing not only how your build quality has grown, but the quality of your content too. Amazing work Drew.
1:37 - Don't worry about welding being perfect. You are not sending anything to space, and the mantra "a grinder and paint, will make me the welder I ain't" is always applicable.
Amazing. Top tip, od you want to keep closed profiles alive longer - drill a hole, weld a nut, put some used engine oil inside and screw in a bolt. Oil will float inside profiles and prevent rusting in closed profiles.
Ok that "broke a$$ mother flipper" fiberglass technique is something that I'm most definitely going to be looking into some more because that looks like it could be a very useful technique to know how to do. There's so many different projects you could use that on to save money and get a very nice looking end result. From what I've seen so far I definitely like that idea and wish I knew about it years ago!
Thank you so much for sharing. Most interesting project. Learned a lot and if some day the means are there I will surely give it a try. I was inspired, motivated and for someone that works with homeless people, you can imagine.
Nice build! I could see an added benefit where, depending on wheel choice, if something horrible happened when touring, you could swap a trailer wheel to the bike to keep rolling and get parts needed for a fix.
Awesome work. I've watched it all, even though I only ride motorcycles, I still think something similar to go off-road can work. Thank you for posting it.
THAT is absolutely amazing, so well thought out and quality build. If l had made that, l would be so darned proud of myself! Well done, it’s great and l’m sure you’ll enjoy many happy adventures in it!
When I first saw it, I thought it was small and simple, but when I saw the process of making it, it was incredibly detailed and professional. I used all my energy to make it, so I can't even go far with a bicycle behind me. 😁😁👍👍👋👋
Really cool build. Let's call it version 0.9 😆 Within your budget i think you did awesome. I can see so many improvements, especially to keep weight down! Aluminium frame, solar on the roof, better wheels. USB fan, heater etc. But hey, you build something that works and I haven't!
I plan on using 4x8 sheets of 5.2mm Lauan board, and 1" rigid foam. Glued together using low expansion polyurethane spray foam. My local Home Depot has them. I find even 1/4" plywood to be an overkill. Build it like you did, but with much thinner layer of wood glue. Enough to provide a protective layer for the polyester epoxy and to hold the canvas tight against the foam. Polyester epoxy or casting epoxy or table epoxy, eats foam. Regular resin epoxy doesn't, but it's super expensive. Polyester epoxy is cheap. The wood glue will hold the canvas tight to the foam and also provide a protection layer of polymer, long enough for the epoxy to set and not interact with the foam. Some "table river" and casting epoxies have UV protection as well. Once the wood glue is dried, instead of painting the canvas with paint, I plan on using a cheap polyester epoxy (colored titanium oxide white), applied with a roller and allowed the canvas to soak as much epoxy as it likes, before squeegeeing the excess off. Cotton and epoxy composite, is stronger than fiberglass and epoxy believe it or not! Cotton flux and epoxy is used in structural aircraft construction. I challenge anyone to dent the canvas skin made this way with their finger nail. I built a LongEZ aircraft using fiber glass and foam, and I'll never work with fiberglass again. Even though I have yards of the stuff left. Pure cotton canvas is heavier than fiberglass, but also produces a stronger composite with epoxy. For the frame, since I don't have a welder, and find steel disgustingly heavy and overkill, I plan on using either a 1" aluminum square tubing and braze them together using aluminum brazing rods and propane torch, Or just build it using 2x3 kiln dried construction lumber painted with epoxy. Wood is nature's unbeatable construction material. Many people think it's low tech, but they would be wrong. The floor will be 1/2" epoxied plywood. If you know soldering, you know brazing. I think I can make this trailer weight under 50 lbs. !! That's the goal anyways. Love your design.
Stick a battery and electric motor wheels on your camper. Little solar panel on top to help and it will likely push your bike along. Might even increase your range
If this trailer is only 120 lbs, I know my ebike would tow it. I already tow a cargo trailer that is regularly loaded around 150 lbs. I get that 40 mile range with it. The only change I might make is put the hitch on the other end and add a mud/gravel guard section of the trailer facing the rear wheel. BBSHD 52v 30T 11-36 4.7x26
Thanks to watching you design this trailer, i have ideas for a trailer I'm working on getting started on. Seeing as I don't have as much access to money like you do, it'll definitely take me a little while to build.
Really nice! Had the same idea. But was thinking of using aluminium for the frame. Also was thinking of doing it in two parts as a box, so you could expand the height. Maybe a flexibel solar panel. 😊
Excellent construction work and really well thought out!. I'm preparing to build my next e-recumbent bike (FWD) but as a tilting delta trike with a rear 6'x30" cargo deck because I haul my dog and stuff all the time by bike. The idea of bike touring and wild camping seems appealing too and you're video has given me some excellent pointers for an optional cabin.
This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for. Love the build and love all the improvement ideas in the comments. Thanks for the creativity and sharing.
This is awesome. I've been planning such a project for at least 4 years to live in full time. (Live in a van presently). Finally spoke with an aluminium fabricater who will build the frame light and strong. Not sure how mine will eventually look but intend an extending roof and partially lowering floor as I want to be able to nearly stand in mine. Enjoy yours, it's perfect.
There's so much potential with this! Off-grid/bugout//stealth camper. You could hook up an alternator or something to the wheels and generate power or add a solar panel to the roof. Very neat build.
Very clever stuff and skillfully manufactured. With the hindsight of watching you build this; to reduce weight and improve aerodynamics, I'd make a flat trailer out of an aluminium frame and use tubes and canvas to make it into a quick-erect trailer tent. Perhaps with a plywood roof, canvas wall with a zipper door and windows and levers to keep it erected.
@@jlinn543, sorry, I must have forgotten he said that. Fair comment. That said, a trailer tent is a different prospect from a standard tent and does save an awful lot of weight if you have a long journey to make.
@@jlinn543 I'm really pleased that you liked my suggestion, I have no experience working with aluminium but I'm sure the know-how can be found on the web. I was think of a flatbed trailer with a light plywood roof, heavily yacht varnished and maybe even with a simple skylight. The roof could simply be mounted on four poles or maybe something a little smarter in the form of levers. Rather than paying out for canvas, it might be cheaper to reuse one or two second-hand tents to create the walls, door and any windows. I would also use smaller 20" bicycle wheels to make it easier to get in an out of the tent and store the trailer. Another idea I had was to make the base fold in half to reduce the length of the trailer when being towed - that might be impractical but it did cross my mind. A folding design might be better off with a canvas roof which could employ a ridge pole to create a slight apex to prevent pooling if it rains. Drop down supports by such a hinge mechanism would keep the trailer flat when unfolded. In fact, in theory, you could find the right-sized quick erect tent and attach the base to the unfolded trailer of the same size then simply fold the entire trailer in half for travelling and unfold it when ready to camp. That way you get to carry what you need strapped onto the top of the trailer but have the tent element almost ready to go when you make camp. The advantage is the tent is already partially unfurled and laid out when you fold open the trailer and you get to sleep above a potentially dirty, cold or wet ground surface. I guess there are many ways to approach such a design but I'm glad you agree that canvas can solve a lot of problems, however it is used. Sounds like a really great project and I wish you the best of luck with your trailer build.
Being disabled, and into ebikes, I couldn't help but think when I saw the gears on the trailer wheels, how could BLDC motor(s) be hooked up to those gears. Excellent video, and a great build! Kudos to you sir!
@@aarrontaylor1222 The only problem is, I'm not sure how it would handle with a hub motor being on one side of the trailer, maybe a brushless shaft motor with a gear and chain hooked up to the axle might ride better without putting side torque on the bike from the trailer slightly twisting to one side.
5 Mins Into this Vid, really nice to see someone just giving it a very good go, no fuss no muss :) Clearly it turns out Usable/Workable, so it's all good. Any major things you need to fix you can always build another one if you want/need to. Now I see in the comments that you are already working on another one, so I will finish watching this one. :)
Hate to say it but the old strat does sound the best to me, and by quite a margin. That is not usually the case but there are exceptional examples out there from every era.
NEW SUBSCRIBER! I love the results, excellent craftsmanship! I haven't a place to build at this time and I love building, being creative. I've wanted to make one of these using PVC, since PVC is used in pipes, it's strong, weather proof and lightweight. My intent is to provide the 'houseless' with a dry place, something to call their own, since the majority (in my area) have bikes. I look forward to checking out other builds you've come up with.
Great build! My one inexperienced comment would be to have some kind of fan or ventilation at the top most portion on the inside for air movement. A small cooling fan that can be connected to your USB system would be great! I've watched a lot of build videos (plan to build a skoolie) and your soothing voice and great descriptions had me subscribe. Some people offer great advice but their voices and rhythm are horrible!
There are solar powered fans that can be used during the day and this will ventilate the cabin of any body oder from sleeping in the closed box over night. The only draw back would be keeping it from allowing water to get in. It’s designed to go on car door windows I’ve had mine now for over 20 years best $25 AUS I have ever spent as it keeps the car from getting over heated on hot days out here in the Aussie Outback.
You've done an outstanding build on that trailer. As you said earlier in the build, it would've been better if you would've used ¼ inc plywood cause it would have been much lighter but in the meantime, it's still good for what you're gonna use it for. Enjoy yourself on the trails and camping.
Amazing video. I wonder if everyone realizes how much work is to not only engineer, build something, but also have to get the cameras in position for every shot (by himself) while doing all the amazing work. Then editing the thing, music score, narration, clever edits - - man that's a lot of work. Amazing trailer man, just world class perfect! Thank you! Cheers from Hamilton, Canada
Great Job Drew, Looks great. It occurred to me that along with some of the other weight saving mods for your next upgraded version , you could reposition the axle to get the pointy end facing forwards, I think it would probably be a lot more aero dynamic.
It sounds counter-intuitive, but the bulbous end facing forward is actually more aerodynamic. A flat back end is worse than a flat front end, as air flowing around the structure creates a vacuum around the back, sort of acting as a pulling force. So by tapering the back end you reduce the effect of the vacuum.
@@RichardFStripeRendezvous Hi Richard, its not a bulbous end though is it, its flat! If it was a perfect tear drop shape or perfectly aero dynamic maybe, but the surface area of the flat end compared to the pointy end has gotta create more drag shirley. I suppose the bike and the rider might brake up the profile a bit? I'd like to see the wind tunnel data please.
@@simonpegg1943 You're right, in this specific instance the front end is probably a bit too flat for that to be true, but even with a stiff headwind, I don't think it'll make much of a difference at cycling speeds.
@@RichardFStripeRendezvous Hi Richard, thanks for your reply. I was recently out riding my motorcycle in a very strong headwind,, gale force even, 50 mph approximately, virtually came to a stop head down, full throttle. My point is on your bicycle even a short gust can affect you quite dramatically I could imagine any wind probably stronger than 15 mph and you would end up going backwards.
I realise that this was posted a few months ago and there are too many comments to see if this has already been mentioned, but the 'poor man's fibreglass' was a very common building method. I have two 'bondwood' (plywood) caravans from 1947 and 1952. Canvass over ply and then paint sealed was the normal method used for caravan construction (particularly for the roof) in the 20s thru to the 50s before aluminium cladding took over. Building campers is a hobby of mine and you've tempted me into doing another. A reproduction of a 1950s motor scooter folding camper that although originally for a Vespa or Lambretta, could also suit a bicycle, especially an ebike. You've done a great job!
For the wheel stability, consider getting wheelchair pop-off hub wheels, and weld the axle stubs connected to each other by a bar to your wheel plates. Also, if, for some reason, you repeat this build style, you can bend your trailer tongue the same way you bent your roof plywood and foam; just cut a bunch of slits, closely spaced, into your square tube, easily bend the remaining wall, then just weld the slits shut. You might also be tempted to build it out of aluminium square tube next time.
These Bike Campers have become a semi popular thing with the preppers. They are light and can carry more than people think. There's a family of 3 in my prepper group that all have one and camp in them several times a month.
I would add a small solar panel on the roof of this "sleeping cart" and as an addition - when the Sun isn't visible - one energy generator useful while riding and at least to store energy - one battery.
Hi Drew, thanks for posting, great build and a great video. Future versions can profit from this first working prototype and a few other enhancements: The frame could be made of aluminium or even wood. (see Paul Elkins designs) The side panels can be made of a sandwich of wood veneer and isolating foam instead of the much heavy plywood. It would not only save a ton of weight but also a ton of wood cuts for the curved surfaces. Keeping the wood texture could be made visible by using one sheet of fiberglass and epoxy resins. Also using foam on the floor to complete the thermic isolation of the trailer. Cheers
Bruh i do stuff like this just to have fun and I am incredibly impressed with your work man. This is the quality you would see in any manufacturing plant. It's incredible how thorough you were with it. Nice job!! I'm very convinced, seeing how you made this, that it will last I want to say at least 20 years maybe more. Depending on how it's stored and taken care of. Again amazing job man!
I love this build. I'm wondering if something like this could be used for a motorcycle instead of a bicycle. The chassis and wheels would obviously have to be changed and you'd have a little more room for weight too. You did a great job and gave me a lot of ideas to consider. The best was the lack of fancy tools and you using what you had made it feel like a more inviting project I think.
@@sharontaylor777 very possible I think. With a car, weight would be even less an issue. Since this, I started looking at Harbor Freight trailers as a possible cassis option.
Great built, here are some pointers to make your next build even better😄 mount the whole cart the other way- more aerodynamic. remember draining holes in the metall bars so condense and sneaky water has a way to get out. Magnet + copper coils on the wheels will turn them into generators without making pedaling heavier, that way your powerbank allways stay charged, and your backlight can hook directly on so when the wheels go the traffic lighs will light. Love the sheet- poor mans carbon, but maybe use epoxy not paint, that way you can decrease your woodthicness and reduse the weight by at least 15-20% wich is allot on the total. I might have connected it with an arm to the seatbar, but i bet everyone has tons of different ideas when it comes to theese builds. But i really liked and enjoyed watching this, thnx great upload.
"Magnet + copper coils on the wheels will turn them into generators without making pedaling heavier" is against the law of physics. Anything that will generate electricity by magnet and coil will need more work.
I like your suggestions. I wondered about changing the cart the other way to make it more aerodynamic myself. Does it add more weight to the back axle? By making it the way he has it does it take some of the weight off the back axle and add it to the bike? Anyone? Comments?
Bravo....great idea. The second part making the bike and battery pack was the top of the mountain.Great ideas make for great vids and draw in the subs.I watch the Outsider building his log cabin. But he built a pull behind camper similar to what you did.He also invented a small heater that uses candles. You Canadians have some great channels.Shawn James also has a great channel.Keep up the great work.I watched almost all your vids and can't wait for the next one. Thanks Drew for your ideas and time..!!
+1 for tracked plunge saws, they are amazing, compared to weaving all over the place with a jigsaw, having to manhandle massive sheets on a bench saw or having difficulties when you need to start a straight cut in the middle of a sheet which takes extra work with a circular saw. I would never have considered using said plunge saw for making bendable plywood, genius! 😀
Just love this, it's adorable! And speaking of... puppies, lol!!! I am going to share this video with my son. I wish he had access to such a build, he could leave the city limits for a weekend & still take his cat with him! Sounds like loads of fun! Man, that’s perfect! I’ve watched it with a smile on my face, it was a great pleasure to watch such a qualified master at work. I’m a rider too and I was a little bit worry about the weight, but it’s quite good. I think the comfort at night (and especially in the morning) worth it. Good luck! Greetings from Russia :)
Amazing build. Lots of time went into this, but it was worth it. Of course anyone can make suggestions after the fact on how to improve it, me included, so here goes. Mount the thing 180 so that the wind resistance is reduced as compared to just the great big flat side going into the wind. Then with that big flat side facing out back include a table and bench that drops down from the side. Now you have your outdoor kitchen you can cook and do other stuff out there you can even "pop out" the drop down table/bench a little bit so that you have place to store your butane stove and your Skillet and such.
@Paul Anthony Vild: Just tell Drew your truth..(Arm Chair Warrior) You think Drews trailer sux azz...Obviously, he did not build it to your specifications..NO...he built it to HIS....accept that. Wind on your back is a good thing. Going into wind sucks. 180 degrees is not going to make the the destination 30 minutes faster. 120 lbs is still 3-5 pedals per wheel revolution... That is a lot of work.
Despite the weight, it's an extremely fine piece of work and will make for a great overnight camping experience. I think the answer would be to use it for short hops on the bike and local camping and see it as a healthy workout. I have a couple of e-bikes that would easily solve the issue of weight. Perhaps think about a lighter model for trips further afield. All in all though, a fantastic job. Well done.
That's cool, reminds me of when I was a kid. We use to tow a homemade trailer and camp out of it, brought back memories (thankyou). 2 ideas though. If you turn the camper around on the base, you'll get a slightly better aero profile and could you use the same "poor man's fibreglass" just over the foam. This may shed some weight without compromising strength.
Cool build. The whole time I kept worrying about how much it would weigh, but 120 lbs isn’t horrendous. Maybe try to make an ultralight version with included solar panel to charge an eBike for your next version?
Good idea
Not so bad until you go uphill or even worse downhill with additional weight of everything you want to take.
@@cyrkielnetwork Solar power can help with the electric axle brakes on trailer.
Using aluminium for the bed would have been the lighter option. Mild steel is a lot heavier.
Make it happen! You can do it 🙂
That's epic
gonna do exactly that next year. Wilmington NC to Seattle WA to southern Oregon.

Craftsmanship. measure twice, cut once. Brilliant. And thoughtful.
Moving wheels more to the front would also have the camper follow the bike better on tight corners, use less space ;) :)
And yeah, i would have had the wheels so it was balanced when it was empty, and then just keep it balanced when it's packed :)
All of the weight is loaded directly onto the rear axle of the bike though, so it won't behave like a car with a towbar aft of the wheels.
Nice job man. Looks really good.
Trouble with taking off tongue weight is that trailers are less stable the more the weight is to the rear / lighter the tongue is
Awesome build. Great job!!
Agora sei como os Flinstons fazia seus carros 👍😂🤣🤣

I am Swedish so I always take of my shoes before I goes in to something, so I had built a small box just under (and to the side of) the door for my shoes and also bring one of those rubber mat you use in a car to place just under the door when I stop, in that way you can sit in the door opening and relax. And great and creative build.
Great idea!
Indeed, I can pack a 2-person tent plus sleeping bag plus small camping air mattress weighting less than 10 pounds total. Still a cool build though.
can always get an electric converter kit to help on long rides plus with something like this having a hefty battery would be useful, now a days you can get regenerative power from pedaling and use that power on hills or even cooking etc.. which actually makes this incredibly efficient considering all the storage space you get when your not in the trailer.
Electric bike that lets you pedal on straightaways and engage the motor when needed. Perfect for this setup.
you can have an e-bike.
agreed.. unless the world is flat, this kind of build is ok, but stil not great.
I like it. It's cool when an idea actually comes into existence, and actually works out as planned.
See Paul Elkins (single-layer Coroplast) build (60 lbs, I think). ua-cam.com/video/ZiejAhol4Ps/v-deo.html
@@gman-zm4if Thats what the kerf cuts were for. Compression occurs on the inside of the bend, stretching on the outside.

I DIY a trailer out of industrial aluminium extrusions, used the same bike trailer coupler.. unfortunately it broke when I used it less than 300km.... if your trailer is over 25kg, change to steel It may be safer to make a latch.Share 2 experiences with you

This was really cool to watch. I also wondered if an aluminum frame to reduce weight would be good. If you had a small Jackery on your shelf, you could wall-mount a small fan, the kind that can reposition to any orientation, to help you with air flow while sleeping, and potentially reduce condensation from your breath by aiming it to push air out one of the windows. Very interesting vid.

I love it.
If you like the look of the wheels alone, think of using wheelchair wheels. They are stronger than bicycle wheels and also the axles are thicker.
Wow! Thanks!

Amazing! Using the foam on the outside of the trailer! Cuts also, some things seem obvious except not the same when a person is within the project! Nice work!

@@jlongmasbartholomew what the actual fuck dude
@@jlongmasbartholomew Hi I'm a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints and I have a question for you.
Why was it necessary for God to "command" Nephi to kill Laban to get the brass plates? The information on these plates would be included on the gold plates that Joseph Smith was supposed to have translated directly from.
God himself knew he would be asking Nephi to break one of the 10 Commandments "Thou shalt not kill". Nephi found Laban drunk and then was commanded to slay him and to cut off Laban's head.
Book of Mormon
1 Nephi Chapter 4:7-12,15-16,18
11. And the Spirit said unto me again: Behold the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands. .....
12. And it came to pass that the Spirit said unto me again: Slay him, for the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands;
@@jlongmasbartholomew GOD NOT REAL RATIO L
@@RoBo37enterprises Hello friend,
This is 1 Nephi 4:12-17
12 And it came to pass that the Spirit said unto me again: Slay him, for the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands;
13 Behold the Lord slayeth the wicked to bring forth his righteous purposes.
(3) He had not listened to the commandments of the Lord (1 Nephi 4:11; Deuteronomy 13:15).9
Thus, Nephi killed a man whom God had delivered into his hands, indicating that he was worthy of death from a divine perspective.
Thanks Murray! I have a few changes for sure, actually working on another one right now
@@DrewBuildsStuff Be sure and share it with us.
I saw a few videos where a man used retired political signs to make sleeping quarters. I think I would like to try something like this with my lawnmower trailer.
That "fiberglass" trick is worth viewing the whole build!
Back in the 50s-60 canvas kayaks were very common. Had two myself.
Every step is a learning curve for me lol
I'll have nightmares of that day for the rest of my life.
Pulls all of your leg hairs out? I have a business idea

Acetone makes it soften.

oh no I am so sorry for laughinnnngggg

Couldn't agree more
My same thought. I don't have those kind of tools. 😔
Yesssss!!!!
@BFTtheTRUTH I don't see homeless people walking around with tools and lumber to build a shelter.
@BFTtheTRUTH For the homeless you have to be able to have a address to use inorder to get a job. I am not your darling!
Really cool! If you mounted the tow on the smaller end, you would encounter less wind resistance plus you would get a bigger shove when the wind is coming from behind you. Also, a solar panel on the roof would be great.
You got a point.. wind resistance is important to watch for. Solar panel is a plus..
Same as what I was thinking. The drag would make that 120 lbs feel like 500 going uphill!
You would have to be pretty thick not to do that, it's hardly rocket science.
You're wrong. The most aero shape is that way. Just like the pear, thick end first.
@@robertmakin2259 The thick end first is the most aerodynamic ? Get real, ridiculous.
Haha yes I believe that is the technical term for this fibreglass technique haha
Could maybe mount a "spare" on the back of the camper!
Awesome work. I've watched it all, even though I only ride motorcycles, I still think something similar to go off-road can work. Thank you for posting it.

It sounds like it will work out very well
I have an e-bike with about a 40 mile range. This would be an awesome accessory to get me out of the house more often. Love it.
Go for it! I may do the same in a future video
You’ll get about 5 miles range towing that
Stick a battery and electric motor wheels on your camper. Little solar panel on top to help and it will likely push your bike along. Might even increase your range
It will approximately half your range, but in a wind and hill scenario as little as 15 mls .
super impressed; thanks for showing the detail and patience it took to see this through, Great craftsmanship!
Wow...that's cool ♂️, never thought this could happen in reality, saw people making carriages for carrying water though....that's true Fun 😊
This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for. Love the build and love all the improvement ideas in the comments. Thanks for the creativity and sharing.
Great detail, filming and editing. Congratulations, that was so inspiring!!!
I would absolutely *love* to have one of these babies .. but my diy skills and tools = less than none. Great job! love it :)
Downgrading from van to smaller camper pulled by bike makes no sense. That's like going from a studio apartment in a van.
As for me, I would consider making foam-only walls reinforced with fiberglass or PMF. That would make it lighter.
There's so much potential with this! Off-grid/bugout//stealth camper. You could hook up an alternator or something to the wheels and generate power or add a solar panel to the roof. Very neat build.
120 lbs of trailer weight PLUS running a generator off the wheels? Sounds exhausting!
HAHA... "Stealth Camper"... "uh no.... it's a watermelon cart.... I don't sleep in it! That would be NUTS!" LOL
Very clever stuff and skillfully manufactured. With the hindsight of watching you build this; to reduce weight and improve aerodynamics, I'd make a flat trailer out of an aluminium frame and use tubes and canvas to make it into a quick-erect trailer tent. Perhaps with a plywood roof, canvas wall with a zipper door and windows and levers to keep it erected.
... But he said he doesn't want a tent .... Still, great idea and I'm going to steal it for my bike trailer.
@@jlinn543, sorry, I must have forgotten he said that. Fair comment. That said, a trailer tent is a different prospect from a standard tent and does save an awful lot of weight if you have a long journey to make.
@@neilsmith9473 You would probably be correct in that. Great idea tho
I love this. I know people travel the world on bikes and I think having a camper like that attached to a bike would make it so much fun.
Being disabled, and into ebikes, I couldn't help but think when I saw the gears on the trailer wheels, how could BLDC motor(s) be hooked up to those gears. Excellent video, and a great build! Kudos to you sir!
Haha even I was thinking how to hook electric motor up. Electrical hub motor I think 🤔
This deserves 10million Views. Hopefully it will blow up soon 👊
Thanks! I’ll cross my fingers haha 🤞
This build is really nice I would love to build something like this in the future!
I agree about the voice. Easy to listen to and understand.
He’s smart, handy, handsome, and over 6’. That alone is enough to subscribe 😆
It's your video production and editing that did it for me
You've done an outstanding build on that trailer. As you said earlier in the build, it would've been better if you would've used ¼ inc plywood cause it would have been much lighter but in the meantime, it's still good for what you're gonna use it for. Enjoy yourself on the trails and camping.
I am wondering about thin ply vs stainless
@@RichardFStripeRendezvous
Hi Richard, its not a bulbous end though is it, its flat!
@@RichardFStripeRendezvous
Hi Richard, thanks for your reply.
@@simonpegg1943 That is true, my point was that even with a super streamlined version, if the winds are that bad it probably won't make a difference.
Best "homemade" bike trailer I've ever seen and I've seen hundreds. Congratulations. I wish you huge success.
I’m literally a hobo in 7 days, this has helped me so much,
For the wheel stability, consider getting wheelchair pop-off hub wheels, and weld the axle stubs connected to each other by a bar to your wheel plates.
I was wondering if aluminum would be better or worse, it would be a lot lighter and so easier to pull right?
@@mikearchibald744 should still be plenty strong, too.
And many consider an electric bike too.
i hope he makes it an ELECTRIC CART
onve you built one yourself you can add whatever you want to it ;)
I would add the generator to the brake system somehow. You don't want to have to pedal harder to generate.
@@JRush374 some kind of induction on the wheels
Hi Drew, thanks for posting, great build and a great video.
Future versions can profit from this first working prototype and a few other enhancements:
The frame could be made of aluminium or even wood. (see Paul Elkins designs)
The side panels can be made of a sandwich of wood veneer and isolating foam instead of the much heavy plywood. It would not only save a ton of weight but also a ton of wood cuts for the curved surfaces.
Keeping the wood texture could be made visible by using one sheet of fiberglass and epoxy resins.
Also using foam on the floor to complete the thermic isolation of the trailer.
Cheers
Amazing build. I'd love to see a follow-up on this: upgraded wheel bracing, maybe a little shoe cubby, a fold-out awning and some roof storage?
More weight, great idea.
For a guy without alot of knowledge or tools...it sure as hell looks like you do. Good job man that is awesome
how do you only have 11k subscribers? this is quality content and you need more recognition

The best was the lack of fancy tools and you using what you had made it feel like a more inviting project I think.
or adapt for towing behind a car maybe?
@@sharontaylor777 very possible I think. With a car, weight would be even less an issue. Since this, I started looking at Harbor Freight trailers as a possible cassis option.
Lack of fancy tools? Either we weren't watching the same video or we have different definitions of fancy
Great built, here are some pointers to make your next build even better😄
mount the whole cart the other way- more aerodynamic.
remember draining holes in the metall bars so condense and sneaky water has a way to get out.
Anyone? Comments?
i love this idea, however, the weight would need to be addressed. Using a lightweight material instead of wood!
Great job in the fabrication though!
Thanks Edward! Have 2 new videos I’m working on now, both coming in sept!
Absolutely brilliant mate, and love the way you do your NO BS videos…. Looking forward to lots more…. Rob, Brisbane, Australia.👍🚴♂️🦘
Just love this, it's adorable! And speaking of... puppies, lol!!! I am going to share this video with my son. I wish he had access to such a build, he could leave the city limits for a weekend & still take his cat with him! Sounds like loads of fun! This is my third video of yours that I’ve watched, but I’m gonna say something I’m sure others have said before:
you are criminally underrated.
Thanks Gabe! Appreciate it 😊
When I’m older I’m gonna try make this!!I love camping and I can ride a bike soooooo why not
Man, that’s perfect!

This looks so awesome! I would build one myself if I had the space and tools to do it.
I’m inspired, cheers man,Stray1 Britain’s best Unknown stuntman that never was,
Despite the weight, it's an extremely fine piece of work and will make for a great overnight camping experience.
Thanks for the tips! I will likely do another improved design in the future, I’ll add those 2 points to the list 👍
