My grandfather made machinists tools at Bath Iron Works in Maine where they built battleships and it must be hereditary. I'm obsessed with making functional beautiful things like tools, lights, lenses for micro-photography and more. I took a look at what I considered a very sharp chisel under magnification and was surprised to see how rough the edge really is, bits of metal going in every direction. And like a fractal, the sharper it got, the closer I looked and it never got "sharp" at the leading edge. I think the shards and bits are what do the cutting. Love your work, don't ever stop.
It’s like watching an old master as a young man. I can imagine these thing showing up on “Antique Roadshow” 400 years from now and being appraised at auction value of between 8 and 11 million dollars. Lol
Hello Uri. I really love your videos and i wish for more views for you. Could you please make more detailed video on making of steel engraving chisels? I did not get the heel establishment part and sharpening. Thanks. Keep up
I'm so glad I've found your channel! Those conversations always go like: - oh, I need better tools, but they cost a ton. - oh, I could make my own tools, but for that I need other tools! Love the simple set of tools you have and the straightforward approach.
nah for me is more like . Oh i would like to build me some tools oh but I don-t know where to build such materials in low quantities and of good quality.
Love the video. Super well done. I learned a lot. I had no clue that you could create a dowel the way you did. Useful. Your knives are beautiful. Thank you very much for sharing your process.
Uri, I'm interested in making my own tools. Your method was very interesting. I appreciate that you don't edit out mistakes. Your handling of them is very comical and honest. Another great video and project
Coming from a veteran toolmaker and artist, your work approach and practice is inspiring. You might dispense with the magnet and just observe the shade of red for hardening at transformation temperature. Likewise with drawing (tempering) - the degree of 'straw' color is important in balancing chip resistance/sharpenability vs. edge retention. I've pointed my fellow craftsmen to your channel to observe your rhythm. You work like a man twice your age. [Edit] This is a serious compliment.
Thanks for the tips and compliments! however, I hope the editing doesn't make me look better then I really am. I make mistakes left and right. speaking of age, if you put me next to Paul Sellers, I look like just a clueless kid. granted, you can put just about everyone next to Paul Sellers and they would look like a clueless kid but when it comes to experience and discipline, I have much to learn. and I am happy to learn it together with you guys.
At first I thought you were kind of goofy (like me) but the more I watched I realized you are quite gifted. You are indeed a craftsman and do very excellent work using time consuming but edifying work with minimal tools. My hat is off to you sir and I am now a subscriber. Thank you greatly.
Please don’t stop making videos! I appreciate your humility, unbelievable amount of skill, and practicality! You are a beacon of hope for all of us beginner engravers. :) Thank you!
man you really do beautiful work . a true craftsmen . i love that you dont just make a useful tool but go the extra mile to make it look beautiful as well . that is the mark of a master .
Wow! I learnt so many new techniques!! I made two carving knives just last week and wish I had found this video earlier. Time to make a few more knives!! Thanks for sharing!
I personally would be more than proud to own, and show off, what you call mistakes Uri. Your mistakes are our treasures. Thank you so much for your channel and all the excellent work you do. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I.e., your wit/humor is spot on and loved Sir.
You have well edited videos and a wonderful attitude. I'm glad you show your mistakes and how you progress past them. I could watch you work and learn forever, keep up the great work!
Man I wanna make sculptures all day with that guy. Sweet knives. Love the old interchangeable blades. I have some old engraving tools like this. Great videos. They turned out beautiful, love how you fold the brass. I make my own everything too but I’d buy a set of those from you.
I'm going to throw my tools away. You do such amazing work with simple tools. Your work is a reminder that I don't need expensive tools or specialty tools to do awesome work.
Uri, I was, in my early life, a sculptor, craftsman, builder, And I have to say at my late age, you are a very fine young man doing a great job, and learning everyday just how much you can do. I truly enjoy watching you do what I can no longer do. Regards, Solomon
nice videos with lots of short cut good tricks.....you have earned my subscription today I also enjoy hearing words we use here in the US like Montage pronounced by you the correct way
Dude your awesome and I love you accent. i like your little jokes your hilarious 🤣. Definitely keeps people entertained and keeps their attention. So happy I found you like I said yesterday.
Your work is very cool. I used to do machine shop, mostly lathe work, and recently I'm doing woodworking. You've got me seriously considering starting to combine the two and do a little metal engraving. I'm not entirely sure if I'm capable of making the tools like you have here, but I hope I can!
Yep. You definitely need a Dremel tool with some small wood router bits for inlay. The Dremel has a regular size router base or even the small bell shaped base for routing out grout will work. I don’t recommend the Dremel router bits in the smallest sizes. MicroMark sells carbide fish tail router bits that work very well and are relatively inexpensive. I think you’ll find they work really well to get a consistent flat bottom to your inlay mortises and they come in small sizes. Hope that helps Uri.
Sir, I do believe your channel is likely to soon explode with subscribers. If I am not mistaken, you have gained 2k or so already in the past two days since I've found your channel. The work you do is nothing short of amazing. A true master at your craft. You deserve it.
for some reason i didn't know you could make dowels that way. it's so simple, i must try it! when you greet the viewers in a shiny brass reflection at 9:16 it made me laugh. you do great work with your videos! thanks
Wishing you had a video of your favorite tools. Tools you bought and if you have or haven't made or prefer your own over a store bought one. I personally have some treasured tools but most of my favorites are old and were inexpensive but required some love.
Long videos are good when they have content like this! Sharpening grits are measured differently around the world. The 1k / 6k is probably Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) and their 1k is probably closer to our 420. There's a universal grit chart available that was created by some sharpening nerds.
Beautiful work and inspirational Uri! Thankyou for such helpful demonstration of shaping technique. I wish I lived closer-I would love to go for a drink with you and talk tools, technique, ideas and a passion for making beautiful things by hand!
those knives are beautiful and the small signature plate is a nice touch! I've been wanting to make my own set for a while, and this might have pushed me over the edge to do it! Great video!
I just discovered your channel last night, and I have now between work finished every video you have made. I love them all. I like the ones where you talk more than the music, however, those are great too and the music is my taste. Your comedy is just like mine and you are a very enjoyable fellow. Please continue your channel. I love it so very much. Your works are amazing and I love the humor in it. Especially like the finger tapper, these carvers in this video, and probably the pencil. Thank you.
The stamp you're going for is an oriental signature seal. I've made these myself for my own paintings and drawings, and you weren't far off on yours at all. Try a denser, harder wood than Lime though for it, you'll get more crisp lines. There's also a specific seal paste that is used for this kind of thing.
I found this channel last night, and I've been watching a lot of videos trying to figure out why they make me feel uneasy. You look a lot like a good friend of mine who took his own life back in March. I'm not sure what the relevance of this information is to anyone else, but I guess I just felt like expressing that. I love your projects, though, the first video I watched was the one about engraving a hammer. You're very skilled and I appreciate your work very much!
@@sajinkahnalt I appreciate the kind words, brother. Honestly I find watching these videos therapeutic in a way at this point. In some weird way it's like I can see my friend again.
BroskieManDudeBro Of course man. I think most people would agree that watching things come together like they do in various fields of craftsmanship is immesly therapeutic. Just make sure the comfort these videos give you don’t interfere with your ability to move on and you’ll be alright. Much love.
@@sajinkahnalt I believe I have moved on. It's been a little over two years by this point and I've had sufficient time to grieve and accept what's what. I appreciate you looking out. I'm glad we had this conversation.
Merci pour ce partage , très bon et beau travail . Excellente vidéo très bien détaillée , merci pour l'idée que je vais bien vite reproduire . Good job and congratulations from France .
As I commented on the last video, you got to 10k in no time :) This video was amazing as always, the tools look absolutely gorgeous. I love that you made the blades replaceable and not glued in, it is that kind of attitude that makes this channel so compelling.
Your quality of work is absolutely wonderful, I cannot watch a video of yours without going straight to my shop afterwards and trying similar projects myself! Keep up the amazing work my friend!
Love your work, every time I watch a video of yours I go into my garage and make something.
Absolutely amazing tools!! You are very creative and handy young man!! Greetings from Sweden :)

Well heres one. Amazing work!
I agree completely. Of course, all his videos have the same flavour...
He will get more!!! It takes time for the word to get out.

You don't need to put a @ before a timelabs
Hi Uri, you are not just at very blessed handworker, but also a good artist with the pen, you are an inspiration:

Caught myself watching yet another one of Uri's tubes..... I think you embody a lot of peoples looming frustrations and desires to make stuff.
I found this dude yesterday and I ran outta videos to watch. This mans personality is amazing
Gorgeous tools! Thanks, you are great!
the man just whipped up a dowel from scratch, I am in awe

Quirky sense of humor. I like it. Nice how you kind of bookended the video with you standing next to the cabinet back there.
Please don’t stop making videos! I appreciate your humility, unbelievable amount of skill, and practicality! You are a beacon of hope for all of us beginner engravers. :) Thank you!
Beautifully done I especially love the replaceable blades and NO GLUE and NO EXPENSIVE MACHINES to make them. Fantastic

Super nice looking tools. They look specialty store bought in quality.
Don't worry about videos being long Uri, MAKE THEM LONGER if anything! You're a great artist and also a great video-editor!
Those ferrules... man, well done. Such a simple idea for locking the blade in place. I love your work.
Your work is amazing, and I love your art style. Thanks!
no doubts about it, you are a true artist.
People would pay a hell of a bunch of money for your engraving work.

You make the work appear effortless! Outstanding!
Great video and some beautiful carving knives you made there, my compliments and thanks for sharing.
I like these a lot. I feel like with the split handle design you could also have a cavity inside to store the blade when not in use.
