- In this video I make a small carving knife. I decided to experiment with the technique of laminating steel, often referred to as "san mai".

Torb, as a retired master lapidary, award winning designer and hand fabricating goldsmith, I know that there is a world of difference between “precision” and _precise_ precision; that there is a difference between “good enough for public consumption ” and true mastery of a craft. Thank you, my friend, for the chance to watch the latter in action. Very nice work, indeed!
Wow, thank you Douglas!
you could have made the same point without sucking your own dick for a few sentences there
thanks for sharing douglas!!!
gorgeous work! the eccentric turning was clever.
Thanks Tony! Yes, that was quite fun! :) Not super practical but interesting in it's own way...

I know im asking the wrong place but does anyone know of a trick to get back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot the account password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
I don't understand why so many dislikes, the only negative comments I see are about the handle but that follows pretty closely to the euro style carving handle so I think people just don't understand that it's a purpose built knife. Anyway, Love the fact that you made this from the drop off another knife. I'm always looking for ways to minimize material loss and this nails it. Beautiful knife, flawless execution as always. Kudos!
Thanks!
Not only blacksmithing, you are also master of wood. Applause from Türkiye.
Little wonder why I and so many others repeatedly watch your videos because you are such a marvelous artist craftsman. Your work is beautiful as is the result. Congratulations Torb on another beautiful video. You are the Master.
When I was about 10 or 12 living in Penny,BC Canada I had mowed laws help cut peoples wood for a whole year to buy in the late 70's a German chip carving kit with two oil stone kit from Lee Valley. The one you made totally reminds me of those that I still have a use. Very nice work you will inspire me when I have my forge up and running again in a year. Thanks for the share.
Hey Ben, just read your comment and thought... this guy likes to watch people make stuff! I just started building a stand up paddle board out of plywood and thought you might like to follow along! ua-cam.com/video/hPWi1gfqZKI/v-deo.html
Benjamin Stewart did you get it up and running?

I've been wanting to make one of those for a long time now. Thanks for the great info on blacksmithing one of these fantastic knives. - Josh
Really nice job on the carving knife !!! I enjoy watching the patient way you work, thanks again
This is so beautiful! I watch it every time it appears in the timeline.
A craftsman in his element! Beautiful carving knife, Kudos
I got such a big smile on my face from this one Torbjorn. Loved it.
Thanks Tom!
Tempering in the kitchen oven, sharpening on the counter...don't let the wife see that. Great work as usual. Your channel is my favorite smithing channel.
Beautiful classroom of cutlery! Fantastic job!
I swear you do the cleanest forging I've seen. Very little material has to be ground/sanded afterwards.
Geez bud. You do it all. Not just a blacksmith but turn on the lathe as well. Bravo
Watching this kind of craftsmanship, I was spellbound from start to finish!!
Love watching blacksmithing and carving, I don't know why.
Wow that is a beautiful little carving knife.
Torbjörn: MOLTEN CORE
Not beautiful

watching your videos is always an after work enjoyment for me.....thanks for all your knowledge and passion!
I am sure u have lines of ppl wanting ur merchandise! If not they should be and if so, it’s up to u to make it...sometimes art is for u and for us to watch, not own...I have several paintings I have kept and several I have sold and given away. It’s all up to the artist...thank u for sharing sir.
Another great video! Thanks for the entertainment.
I like your slow and deliberate way of doing things. Its more precise and shows professionalism and care than some super speeded up thrill fest maker video.
That is a really nice carving knife. As always working to perfect results.
Awesome video as always. Great work!
Love the quick carving at the end, it looks like a piece of forged steel.
Quality products!!! It's true, you always get what you pay for.
Superb to see what effort it requires to craft such classic tools like this. I have several knives like this, in different sizes, which are the mainstays of my toolbox for making musical instruments. I shall value them even more now!
I agree in many belongs: You get what You pay for.
But there are some rare exceptions - and owning a knife very similar to this is one of them.
There is a high quality carving knife on the market that (imo) delivers more than You pay for:
The Morakniv 120 has a blade of laminated Steel that keeps sharpness long and is esy to resharp on a bankstone(*) and it's prize is amazing.
(* normally I do 2-3 pulls each side on 1000 grit, sometimes finish with 6000)
The long-awaited video from the new studio.

I admire your skills and craftsmanship !
Seriously awesome rock carving...! Thanks for sharing some laughter too!
What a skilled craftsman.
Wait what
That was very enjoyable to watch. Thanks for sharing.
What beautiful work, a true craftsman.
That is awesome! I have been waiting for another video from you! And you got to use the lathe! Great video my friend, this is on my list of projects.
Lovely to see a small functional knife here on UA-cam! It tends to be a lot of big, bulky, cool looking knifes that makes for nice thumbnails. Thanks for bringing something practical to the table 😊

Gustav & Hilda Holmström ù
Gustav & Hilda Holmström I agree
Very therapeutic watch that was, great tool at the end too.
Really interesting maneuver on the lathe, beautiful result!
I admire your skills, thanks for sharing your time with us.
Thank you
Nice trick with the offset, making the handle. Didnt know about that.
This video made me so excited for you and what you will do in the future. Looks great can't wait to see what's next
You are truly a master of your crafts! Thanks for the video.
As always... excellence of execution, bro... that is always a deep pleasure to watch.
"Bro"
I want that. Beautiful!
You should try making one out of a pencil.
Why are you everywhere :D
Thanks Bobby! :)
Bobby Duke Arts hi bobby
For some reason did not expect u here bobby
as a semi-pro blacksmith myself i can say that from workshop to tools you my friend are doing the best you can with what you have and i respect that. keep up the good work buddy
Thank you!
@@torbjornahman :)
Very nice hope to see some cool carvings in the future. That is the perfect blade for chip carving.
you got skill and this stuff i love it!
Lovely bit of off-centre turning there. Many people would have just bodged that on a belt sander or something
I like your budget food videos dident expect you to be here
Holy shonk...sorry for being 2 years late but happy to see you here nonetheless
Now I've begun carving and this is very interesting to me as I've gotten into Blacksmith for wood working tools and should be busy with making chisels and gouge and knives
Thanks for teaching 😮😂
we enjoyed your programme , magnificent skillls and artistry .
Nice work sir
From the thumbnail I first thought it's a Mora knife but it is really a homemade one. Nice work!
You are truly a patient and meticulous blacksmith. Thank you, your video gave me the knowledge.
It was a pleasure watching you work. You are truly a craftsman.
Beautiful knife! Amazing how sharp you made it!!
Oh thank you for the video and for keeping it detailed and informative. I would really like to combine my woodcarving skills with blacksmithing in the future! Good luck with all you do :D
Thanks, and good luck!
Nice work.It is fascinating to watch you work. Thanks for the videos.
That anvil...that lathe....that knife. Beautiful stuff. Great video.
Отличная работа!
I really like such knives. Thanks for the movie. :)
I am a smith ('Smed') and this was a delight to watch. How wonderful.
People using cut off wheels side ways drove me crazy, great job btw. :D
Damn! You're talented as hades. I am going to have to sharpen my skills brother. You inspire me.
Don't you mean Hephaestus?
Hvala Benjamin!
I TRULY LOVE YOUR ( PERFECTION ) AT WHAT EVER YOU ARE DOING. FROM THIS SMALL KNIFE TO INSTALLING YOUR POWER HAMMER. THANK YOU👍👍👍
Thanks!
Wow Torbjorn you made a very sweet looking carving Knife. I love watching your video's you do amazing work.
Don't you love when metal and wood come together. Amazing work, thanks for sharing.
Thanks!!
a sharp knife is a safe knife, but that carving demo at the end had me sweating. your technique of off-setting the handle on the lathe is brilliant. great work, as always!
Thanks. Yea, the demo at the end was pretty poor...brain freeze.
we want you around for a long time! no trips to the emergency room ;)
I know, right?!? Obviously never a boy scout. I would love/hate to see what that sharp little peeler would do to a knuckle on a missed stroke. Yikes!
Excelente trabalho. Está de parabéns!
Beautiful job and thank you. I make my own from high carbon steel and some are very similar to this one. Others are smaller because I usually carve versions of little people on hiking sticks.
Glad your back! Thanks for another video
very nice
I love how his name is torbjorn and he makes things just like the torbjorn in overwatch.
:)

Hi, I’m Safudin. I’m an addict. I’m addicted to your videos. 😊
Good, hmmm I mean... some therapy might help :)
Excellent work. I love to watch these videos. Even with no words spoken one can learn how to make this knife. I look forward to your next video my friend.
youtube: would you like to watch torbjörn’s new video?
me, ecstatic: boy would i!
Ha ha. Thanks
21:41 Long sleeves and lathe! Choose one. I am surprised nobody said about it
That may be because the long sleeves are gone before he starts the lathe. I wasn't sure about his dust mask and eye-pro though? I like a full face shield for wood turning just in case.
Torbjorn your videos are so peaceful and entertaining!! Its very soothing to me to hang out and watch what amazing thing you are creating next thank you!
Thanks!
This is abnormaly satisfying to watch.
You truly have an artist soul!
I feel My testosteron rising, just by watching this... Amazing...
Why did you go for a handle that shape? It looks disproportionate somehow.
Such a beautiful knife though
Wow I bet the Edge retention is wonderful on that blade. You’re a fantastic metallurgist. Oh and the handle looks really comfortable too. 👍🏾
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. You have helped me so very much.
Glad to hear! Thanks
Nice video, Torbjörn.
The carving knife looks great and is nice and sharp. :-)
Too bad I can not forge, or do not know a blacksmith who lives here in the area.
Otherwise I would build a Japanese baton ax (looks like a wide chisel with a long handle). :-(
If You newer try You will newer learn my friend. :)
That's true.
For me the problem is that I am also limited in health.
3 back surgeries to a vertebra.
The last with stiffening.
I am still in pain, I take Palladon for it.
Sorry to hear that.
but if You cant find a blacksmith nearby, there are many skilled ones that can make one for you on mail order at request, i did that too back in time (but at the moment i am rebuilding my entire workshop because of moving it to a new location). I hope You will find somebody that can help You realize Your dreams.
While your such a talented blacksmith and turn out stunning work, as you were wood turning you did a trick I last saw my father do, when he was alive, you lated the back of the chisel on the turning piece to hear if it was rounded or not. It instantly brought back memories of my dad, thank you for that
Obviously meant layed, auto correct and fat fingers make mistakes
Nice combination of woodturning and blacksmithing. Well done!
never appreciated my small carving knife more than i do now.
Класс! Всегда приятно смотреть на работу мастера!
Thank you!!
That's awesome! You're good my man!
I bought an old lathe at an auction and all the chisel (15) were made with old files. Files steel is very up to the first quality steel. Thanks for showing.
Thanks, i remember;-)
now I finally understood that iron is just like plasticine
Those red conditions just under the melting temperature is called the 'plastic deformation range'.
The eccentric turning is very cool.
Lovely job mate. Great work.
Torbjörn, do you have Emil i Lönneberga in your family ? ;D
Good job
3:06 am I the only person that heard the beginning of Ali-A's intro
get out
So much work were put in this knife. I can just imagine how expensive this knife should be.
that is such a nice little knife.cuts through wood like butter, and paper like its not even there.effortlessly.you are extremely talented.
Thanks Jared!
sometimes i watch this kind of stuff just to be prepared for the apocalypse. or am i just being paranoid?
Nope, you're good, man.
now that's one monster anvil
Edit: I can't spell
polk l.
Nah you did good. makes sense
thats one monster talent !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
U can spell
That is a monster anvil
I bet it can’t be destroyed in Minecraft
Probably uses seven iron blocks
Beautiful piece of craftsmanship!
the finest example of a carving knife is deserving of another viewing. thank you ; ]
What's your profession? And congratulations for the video !
