- The one and only small, lightweight four-wheel drive is how Suzuki pitches the first all-new Jimny for 20 years. It gets an updated interior and funky exterior styling, but is it a match for the serious large 4x4 establishment? last weekend i tested my 2020 jimny with all terrain tyres and 2 inch lift against a land cruiser and a prado and the jimny out performed both of them on a particularly difficult track here in australia , the jimny really is ridiculously capable !!!!!!!
Why do these reviews keep on stressing on cheap interior. ITS AN AFFORDABLE SMALL CAR!!! Don't expect napa leather and diamond encrusted switches on a car that eats dirt for breakfast!
Take my beer
@@thilinasandamal4861 modifying it would be great, hope someone posts a video.
Agree.
because they do not have anything to talk about the car is simple and obvious on what it offers. in cars especially the jimmy you get what you see a rugged 4x4 car
Dirt for breakfast that's a nice line ha ha
Landcruiser owner here. But I'm in love with the Jimny. What a little beauty. Would be such a fun vehicle to own.
To be honest you could have told me it had the same offroad capabilites as a slammed VW golf III, on 12 inch slicks in the rain, and i would still want it. It just looks tremendous! I have no use for a car like this in my life, but dear god i want it so badly!
If you need locking diffs... install them...
Suzuki Japan even has them listed in their accessory catalog for the Jimny
link? please :)
yep, i found that weird, because the option was there for the old jimny, internal switch you flipped.
And you can have manual wheel caps that makes them lock.
I would like them to rlly make the Electric jimny they made a concept for.
ferkeap - The manual wheel caps weren't to lock the diffs unless I am very much mistaken. The wheel-caps were to engage the front shafts. With the hubs unlocked, the wheels freewheel rather than driving the shafts when in 2WD mode, thereby reducing wear and improving fuel-economy.
Suzuki maintained this approach until the Grand Vitara which ended up having a pneumatic dog-clutch to do that job (meaning that you did not need to get out of the vehicle to engage 4WD). The 2004 (if I recall) was the last one which had part-time 4WD and from then, the Grand Vitara went rapidly downhill and became an AWD piece of crap with that shitty torque-vectoring nonsense.
Put an auto-locking or e-locker diff in the back and that’d be all you need. Any time either of the front two start to spin, the brake vectoring will compensate for it and away you go.
@@nathanviking search for jimny accessories Japan. You will find many things and an lsd for the rear axle
One of the best looking SUVs in years. Mini g wagon!
Its a real 4x4 vehicle, not a SUV
Vinsu Karma No, it is in fact a SUV.
@@Ktheodoss another guy who dont know nothing.... if you say this car is a SUV u dont have any basic idea over car categories.
Start to diference between real 4x4 like the car in the video and simple SUVs like dacia duster.
civertron Don’t get emotional about it boy. And I know exactly what Im talking about.
An all terrain vehicle is a ATV, which is for off-road and off-road only. They are illegal on public roads. Example would be a Polaris General.
SUV stands for Sport Utility Vehicle. This type of vehicle is meant for public roads but are also off-road capable. They are traditionally body on frame, and equipped with 4x4 transfer cases. Usually these transfer cases have 4-lo gearing but not always. Example would be Suzuki Jimny or Toyota 4Runner or Prado.
A car based AWD vehicle is not equipped with a transfer case but instead uses a varity of different “clutch” systems that engage when front axle tires slip. Theyre called CUVs or crossovers. Example would be Toyota Rav4.
4x4 isn’t a type of car. Its a type of system.
Anything that is not body on frame with low range and 4x4 is a car. Some cars these days are great offroad.
Want the Jimny so bad 😍 i miss my dads 1995 Suzuki Samurai 😍❤️
Sean Philippe Tan lol have a 88 and love it
Actually my first time to see a 3-door Land Cruiser (Prado). That thing looks awkward.
Surely you meant "awesome"!
Yeah it’s weird. There is also a Lexus version of it. I hate it
山内淳カイル lmao! IKR, not the land Cruiser I was expecting.
@@QazRiyami Any link ?

Just google it or write in UA-cam Lexus GX
Dear Suzuki, Sell this in the US and I will buy.
Dear Jeep, if Suzuki won't sell me one, that leaves a hole in the market. Put the KL in the trash can where it belongs, redo the Cherokee in the same spirit of the *original XJ*, and I will buy.
As for the review, firstly it's all about picking the best line for the vehicle. Secondly, the Jimny crushes the Cruiser in the looks department.
It's a brand new classic car. Want one so bad.
likewayt agreed mate. A true classic in the making.
You haven't seen the 70 Series Landcruiser then...
I love how classic and modern this is. It isn't trying to be mega aero dynamic and safe.
The jimny has a traditional transfer case, so when you put it in 4H or 4L, it is in fact locked at the center.
yes I was confused about what he was saying and didn't understand why he was battling so much, I have the current 1.3L Jimny and in 4x4L the thing is a tractor.
Yeah...funny how reviewers sometimes don't seem to understand the tech they are reviewing.
Because most are just weinies.
That's a centre diff lock, which is not that helpful in this case. The reviewer is right, rear diff locker (and front locker) would have made a big difference.
If this was coming to America I would buy
It's not coming sadly.
You wouldn’t rather have Wrangler?
ermooree5 lol I have one a older one 1988 lol
@@Ktheodoss better size than a wrangler
K. Theodos I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee Trail hawk. Just want a smaller off road car, that I can play around with.
Tires was not exactly rockcrawling friendly on either vehicle.
street economic tires. worst
And clearly not had the pressure dropped on the Jimny but seemed to have on the Toyota.
"cries in American"
Bro, your profile picture. Pretty sure you and me are the only ones who know what that is! "cries in good rap music".
@@gs6810 Lord Quas 😎
Why? lol Just get a Jeep Wrangler. You can usually sell them used for just as much as you bought them for (used). Like the Kowasaki Ninja brand motorcycles, these hold their value and the parts you can find for them are everywhere (cheap) too. The Jeep Wrangler TJ models practically make it easy to do half the work yourself due to how simple the mechanics are designed.
Suzuki parts on the other hand are not only expensive but much harder to find. If you are American, its silly not to go with a Jeep Wrangler for this particular type of vehicle.
thatallredheadude 1 just get a Jeep Renegade, it’s no Jimmy but it’s close
I'm from Canada in am crying .... :( . This is all I want!! A small true awd with AC, electric windows and a real retro look
Cool comparison! I've placed an order for a Jimny..... can't wait to get it and take it off road!
Did you get the Jimny??
Proof that you can spend less and accomplish the same task....and vice versa. You can spend your entire wallet for similar results. This scenario either makes you very mad or very happy.
Looks like a baby G wagen..Not a bad thing..
that design homage of 1st and 2nd gen jimny. and current G is not a off roader because MB doesn't think it is off roader. and buyers think crossin Gravels with 300/15r22 tires are off roading
Very proper and fair test, you didn't let the charm of the Jimny over whelm you. Impressed by the toque vectoring doing its thing at 7:51 .
Brilliant! I want one!
that 3 door Land Cruiser looks so ridiculous with that huge front/face lmao
@@joehew1641 me neither. It maybe will look better if it's in the Prado trim but LC is just so weird looking
i know right i cant believe someone bought that
@@Altruistic00 its the prado swb
I have seen a 3 door Prado but it was like the last generation and it was nice, I'm not shocked seeing a new generation 3 door Prado but it seems weird though..
Theres even a van version where the rear side windows are blanked out
Very enjoyable and well done video thanks.
Any land rover and any jeeps from before 2004 are all brilliant and capable of anything, and new wranglers n defenders still good n this jimny amazing still got that old style that people love about 4x4s its certainly a new favourite
Looks like the love child of a Defender 90 and a G Wagon...very cool!
The aftermarket mods are going to be insane for this little beast. Can't wait until they're released in Australia!
FINALLY someone saying its green! Thank you.
I’m in love with this car!
Yep love it, well worth the money. Add a six speed box, or an automatic option, together with all terrain tyres, and maybe an optional, more up market leather interior. Suzuki would then have a World class small 4x4.
The thing I like most about the 'brand new' jimny is that so much of it is the same as the previous Jimny (same chassis with a few new safety features, same axles, slightly larger displacement version of the same engine etc.). Suzuki are marketing this like it's a return to being a 'real 4x4' but in reality the Jimny has been doing the 4x4 thing very well for years and years. I've had lots of them, and for the work I do I wouldn't use anything else.
So do you praise the new one?
Excellent demo! and as 1911indi says the auto variety would show it at it's potential best.
Not a bad effort. The key to the traction control is a bit more momentum and fluidity (obviously very easy to judge from an arm chair). When it's cross axle and stopped is the weak point, just back up a smidge and give it a little bump with some right boot and you'll find it'll pull through much better. Decent job testing it little fella though :)
Thank you so much for this video. I am about to reserve a vehicle for travel in Costa Rica. I have previously only chosen a regular passenger car and managed very well, but this time I am going into Monteverde, the rain forest, where a 4X4 is pretty much mandatory. You have shown that the Jimny, which is available at a good price and will certainly do me as well as a more expensive vehicle.
Do enjoy Mr Prior's reviews. Something pleasantly down-to-earth and (thankfully) lacking the over-presentation that creeps in to many youtube car videos.
Love both these cars.
They just need a bit of sprucing up with some bigger wheels amd a few subtle accessories.
Overall. Both lovely
It can pull 1300kg? That's pretty impressive for a vehicle that size, considering the Compass is rated at 2000lbs
This color is just awesome
Decent set of tires on there and most problems solved, my friends own farms in North Yorkshire UK, have had a 2006 model and really works well in the sticky stuff, very tough little 4wd vehicle
Nice video
These 4x4Suzukis have always been excellent
your review is not correct at all. you started by taking it in the footsteps of your Toyota. but the Jimny doesn't need to go the same route as the Toyota, you should have gone almost perpendicular to your Toyota route, the whole point of the Jimny is its narrowness. you should have easily maneuvered those rocks. I own a 2016 Jimny, and whenevr we have some obstacle, its allways the jimnys that finish and wait for the bigger cars (ranglers exceluded as they ARE indeed THE BEST)
Ford Raptor number 1
Good point!
Calm down sweetheart. Typical jimny driver.
Wranglers are definitely the best 1 use BBQs I've ever seen
Agreed, poor choice of route in that jimny
I saw a bunch of these in Costa Rica in 2018 really cool little vehicles
That Prado is soooo cute haha!
Best vehicle I ever owned was my Suzuki Samurai, thing was Simple & Indestructible, Loved it ;-)
Small diesel options and a 4 door and I'd buy one straight away! Looks awesome especially in black with the big arches. I had a soft top 04 one and it was great fun
I recall that Suzuki used to have a 1.3L diesel version of the Jimny in their previous models. I wonder if they phased those out. It's not fast on the flats but excellent in muddy, rocky, and steep terrain due to the higher torque and its low weight.
@@ablanuza76 we in the UK never got it. Some people put vw 1.9 in them. I often thought a 1.5tdi izuzu would have been perfect
Waiting...... hope Suzuki India will not disappoint this time..
Sir Roy me too .. but Indian version will be rubbish and m pretty sure about that ..paper metal and less features
What it’s missing: 1.4L booster jet turbo, a hood scoop, & 6 speed auto/manual
OfficialMINIm why did they put such a pathetic engine in it. If it had a decent turbo engine and a 6MT I would be very tempted by it.
MrJordanwain it baffles me too. Im assuming its because they needed to make it as affordable as they could.. but I’m one of those consumers that would rather pay a bit more for more performance and I’m sure many others are like me.
They made a great car but it could’ve been perfect
MrJordanwain I suspect in its main market which is Japan, this car is a kei car, so they have the 660cc turbocharged 3-cyl, which generated 64 horsepower. For the oversea model they probably choose to cheap out and use the less advanced engine, which is not necessarily a bad thing since some off road enthusiasts may dislike the abrupt kick in of the turbo engine and people are not buying this car for speed anyway . But I do agree with you, a bigger engine will do this car far more justice
every extra componen will make it more complicated=not reliable in long run. basic engine for car like Jimny is optimal
The 1.6 from the old swift sport or even liana are way better. I see many guys here who do this engine swap. Gives at a lot more power with the same bulletproof reliability.
Just so you know Suzuki, in Canada we still drive your 90s & 00s rusted out 4x4 waiting for a new model!
As you probably know, we made these in Canada. GM ruined Suzuki's chances in the North America and they are probably not coming back.
Love how you mentioned the Jeep Wrangler as the best over the rock crawling bit :D Owned my 2012 JK since new to 87000KM* All my mates in Australia with D40 Nissan and GU/GQ Patrols etc can't beat my Jeeps handling and agility.
love the mini G-Class looks
I'm 100% gonna buy one
That was Wonderful Compare Testting 02 Japan Cars Company..👏👏👏
Fantastic looking car, well done Suzuki. Im hoping to move somewhere further into the countryside next year, and a car like this would be great. I dont use motorways much so its power would be fine although sitting at 60 is not going to be an issue is it, so long as im faster than the HGVs :) anyway, get some all terrain tyres on this for a proper test !
My fevret jimny
I really like this.
Con qualche modifica il jimny è inarrestabile 💪🏻💣🔥❤️
That is so cool.
This for me is the car of 2018! whilst it isn't a Wrangler or Land Cruiser it is only a tiny fraction of the price. People will start moding them too, with a little lift and locked diffs this tiny thing will be great. Shame it isn't a diesel or electric though :)
You do know jimnys have been as you describe for the last 20 year's? Not a new thing lol
@@benwright3314 yes, but it has been updated with a much cooler new style and that's big news. I'm a big fan, I have lots of Jumny models, I even have a 1/10 scale RC previous generation Jimny to go off-roading on local hikes.
I thought it was yellow... but after you said it was green I can not unsee the green anymore.
kepengen banget gw ini
Will get one after graduation for sure
I really like this little truck. Stick a locking diff or 2 in that and you got a giant killer.
On this test,,it looks like they took a slightly different line to catch out the jimny??
I like the jimmy
Actually, his name is Matt. You have go taste in men, big boy.
My name is Greg. 😘
That Land Cruiser shows what the FJ should have been save and except the non-compliant Diesel .
Jimny! My first
And here I thought Autocar show was only from India 😆
Now make a "civilian" version, 5 doors, and more sound proofing and comfort, and you'll be beating ANY "city' SUV out there as LOOKS and STYLE of this thing are EPIC, and it's already a cult classic
I never knew a 3 door land cruiser existed…. Need this for the winters and mountains
The Jimny that could!
If you pimp the Jimny up a bit: ie jack it up and put some decent tyres on it it’ll go basically everywhere. As for the wade depth, I’ve had mine through at least 700mm of water. The thing was floating. Had to open a door to flood the cabin so it had enough weight to engage the wheels. Took a while to dry the thing out later but the electrics and motor are still fine six years later. There are plenty of very narrow tracks near where I live where the Jimny kills the bigger cars. An astonishing car for the small amount of cash these things cost to buy. I absolutely love mine.
How come there is no review of that Prado 3 Doors on Aurocar? :(
Because Aurocar doesn't exist :)
Want it!!!
If you will be driving over boulders and rocks on a regular basis whatever car you own you would probably have if jacked up even higher as you are not going to have a "sherpa" babysitting you...so that whole test is possibly invalid and silly. I have owned 4x4's in the past (Jeep Cheokees, Broncos...) and I completely disagree with your final comments on the little Jimny. Like someone else pointed out- you took a more difficult route with the Jimny vs. the Toyota and your driving technique may have also been wrong.
I second your comment... I could have taken the Jimny along a path where no other vehicles won't tread.
WestHam66 the test was conducted by someone who is not familiar with off road driving. This is the frustrating thing, I’m hanging out for a decent off road review of the Jimny.
I have the old Jimny and I love that thing, cheap, small and very capable. But like you said, its a rough ride, its like the road is punching my back.
I think it's a great looking and capable off roader.looks similar to the new defender I think and possibly just as capable for alot less money..
Hope it will come to Norway soon.
Im a serious car and label snob but this, this is cool af
Jimny is smaller than the Land Cruiser and I think is logic for it to find it a bit harder to pass over some obstacles. It would be a fairer contest when the obstacles would be proportional smaller for Jimny by the amount which Jimny is smaller than the Land Cruiser, I'd say.
On a second note, I love both cars very much, I think that the Land Cruiser looks stunning.
Over 50 years in the off road sport and 40 years plus in the business and my assessment I’m sure has been mentioned elsewhere. Both vehicles are should have done your (very) mini rock pile equally. It was either driver or spotter error or both, either by accident or deliberately. Being it’s the company car we must make it look good.
Can't wait for 5dr Jimny. That should be a hammer!
👍
I got a 08 sx4 Suzuki and I love it if I could afford it I would bie a new jimny today I think they put a lot of effort into it to make a good compact SUV and it looks good
America needs this vehicle
I honestly love the new Jimny, I hope they depreciate a lot so I can buy one and lift it.
Looks pretty good actually--- Is this going to be available in NA?
Land Cruiser is the king for offroad for a reason but if you dont want to spent that much the Jimny or the Jeep are two awesome choices
This is the perfect modern replacement to the Ageing Maruti Gypsy in India. I really wish they would bring this in. It’ll be well worth it for the small 4WD utility vehicle enthusiast.
thats when the jimny needs a diesel engine and tires...
I was about to say 4bt Cummins and better tires.
Nope, I'd say that's where you need a proper driver who knows how to paddle the Jimny...
they need to make one with a turbo diesel engine like the old samurai (1.5 from renault would be a great and cheap option). I own a suzuki samurai 1.9td and it feels like night and day compared to the 1.3 petrol engine.
A 4bt? Where! It's bigger than the car
I didn't know they even made diesel tyres...
I feel like they could just pick the thing up and carry it across when it gets stuck lol
should come with backpack straps...
Winch?
Go Jimny!
Jimmy has better angles and the live axles are easier to lift than IRS and IFS
the only big problem is the high rev torque engine
Sure is a fun little 4X4. .....want one.
It looks like an iPhone 5c and a G-Wagon had a baby coupe, I like it. Now only if it was available in the states!
This reminds me of my first generation Mitsubishi Montero. It looks green to me.
The Jimmy should've come with a diesel. Would've been so much better.
A choice
2" inch lift and some KO2's will do the trick.
And ARB Air lockers
I want a jimny so badly here in the US.
Seems like all the big auto manufacturers keep pushing bigger more complex vehicles because they make more money.
But I'll take this any day over an oversized 4 door wrangler.
The Toyota Bb 4x4 is the lightest least talked about but they are excellent.
Bring this to the US!!!
We're you in high 4wd going across the rocks? I had heard that in 4wd low the Jimny has non-stall feature... But perhaps moreso with the automatic than manual version?
😎love it
Why aren’t locking front and rear diffs offered on the Land Cruiser 3dr Utility in the UK?
Because it has ATRAC that does 90% of locking diff's without the service issues that follow. Less complication for most folks.
Because they are not needed. A rear locker is only offered in the highest end 5 door Land Cruiser mostly for bragging rights, a front locker is not offered at all. But the truth is the traction control system in the Land Cruiser is so good and so robust that just as effective and less straining to the vehicle than a full locker front and rear would be.
Price... think the higher version have at least one of them
Because you really dont need them for anything, plus they come with a rear locker for £700
Parado not land cruiser
