It can't be overstated how hard this song hit when it came out! It was everywhere, it was groundbreaking for a woman to come out pissed off and telling her story unapologetically. She was a pioneer. This whole album is killer
This is so true, from Denmark here 🤟she was HUGE here too. Im so proud of her, and YES the intire album was Greatness.
Yep. Right Through You is even better off the same album.
The line is "you told me you'd hold me until you die, 'til you die, but YOU'RE still alive". One of the best lines of the song lol
She's a rock goddess.
"Everytime I scratch my nails down someone elses back I hope you feel it." Is right up there with Eminems " If she ever tries to effing leave again I'm gonna tie her to the bed and set this house on fire." In savageness. This woman could sing anything.
...Thanks for posting true words. IMHO - She's better than Janis Joplin at singing the blues.
Our girl was ANGRY and she wasn’t gonna hide it
The Alanis Morissette song "You Oughta Know" is about actor Dave Coulier from TV's 'Full House'. A cast member , Bob Saget, once confirmed that she did call him once in the middle of dinner.
you're right. They mocked her pain, publicly.
@@flingonber the doc about her on HBO discusses all the men in the industry who tried to have sex with her when she was still a minor. Pretty disgusting what women in the entertainment industry have to deal with.
Scrub by TLC was written about him also.
🇨🇦
You'll be happy to find out, then, that Dave Coulier's douchebagery inspired yet another #1 song... "No Scrubs" from TLC. In December 2020, the surviving members of TLC, T-Boz and Chilli, confirmed it was about him.
Jagged Little Pill was nominated for nine Grammy Awards, winning five, including Album of the Year, making the 21-year-old Morissette, at the time, the youngest artist to win the top honor. Rolling Stone ranked Jagged Little Pill at No. 69 on its 2020 list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Many other great tunes on that album!!!
One the most powerful and iconic albums, not of just '95 - maybe the entire decade, and one of the top grossing female artist album releases, EVER ! The entire album slaps / bangs / and broke down barriers & stereotypes !
Hand In My Pocket
Ironic
Right Through You
are also MUST listens
✌️
Alanis from 🇨🇦
In the Broadway show Jagged Little Pill, this song was a show-stopper. We were on our feet cheering and yelling, and the actors had to wait for us to settle down before they continued the show!
I wonder how many people don't know of the hidden "track" at the end of the last song of the album. After a few moments of silence there is a spoken word track about her finding love letters from the "other woman".
Not my genre usually, but this was and is one of my favorite albums. Every song was great
Name me a better female album since guys? You can’t
Alanis showed us it was alright to be angry, and we were there for it. It became our anthem.
YASS ABSOLUTELY!
Abso-fucking-loutely
Yes!!
It was absolutely amazing. It still is!
hell hath no fury like a gen x girl scorned
Alanis Morissette is the jam. I love how she starts out low and calm then proceed to lose her mind. Yeah "she got hurt bad"
Lesson: If you break up with Alanis.... RUN.
@@Mr.Ekshin No... That's the hidden track from this album, now called "Your House". It's the crazy-pants of crazy-pants breakup-song. _You Oughta Know_ is more of a Fcuk You!
One of the angriest songs ever written but it's sheer beauty is in her ability to vocalise her vulnerability so openly. It's so raw and there is so much hurt. An incredible piece of art.
One of the greatest songs of anger, hurt and betrayal from one of the greatest albums of all time. The summer of '95 (and a good few months after) belonged to Alanis.
"Is she perverted like me?
Would she go down on you in a theater?"
Valid questions, Alanis. 👏🔥👏😂
Great reaction y’all! Fun fact Alanis Morissette’s drummer in this video is Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters. He joined the Foo Fighters two years later in 1997
And flea recorded the bass for this
@@docjohnson1 and Dave Navarro on guitar
Yes and before Alanis Tyler played for another Canadian Sass Jordan , Sass gave Tyler his break into the industry, he was working in a drum store in California when Sass hired him ,
RIP
My God I didn't know this!
I love that she is not just singing to HIM, she is singing to the new girl too! "YOU OUGHTA KNOW"
The line “Does she know how you told me you’d hold me until you died, but you’re still alive” is intriguing.
It basically says that either you should still love me or you should be dead. I’ve always taken it as an implied threat from someone on the verge of a breakdown. It’s wonderfully emotive writing.
She's so underrated. She was over-played back in the 90s, but a couple decades later, you can hear her influence all over indie music.
This song is about her relationship with Dave Coulier. He played Uncle Joey on Full House. He broke up with her for someone else. Alannis did not take it well. She said, “ You told me you’d hold me until you died. But you’re still alive.”
No, that was never proven to be true.
Don't spread shit unless it's actual facts.
She has never confirmed who the song is about.
She has never confirmed who it was about but dave coulier did say he knew for sure the part of the song about bugging in the middle of dinner was about him. He said the first time he heard the song he was like oh shit! Thats about me! Apparently that happened…
I'm an Uncle Joey and I still would hold her until the day that I died.
@@BrandonWestfall She never denied it either. If you know anything about her is that her songs often have multiple "inspirations" and she has hinted that "You Outta Know" is about multiple people. It makes sense that Uncle Joey is at least one of those mixed in there. Why would she write about 4 boyfriends but leave the 5th out because she respected him so much? ;)
@@BrandonWestfall His tour before they broke up was called Duplicity. She says Mr. Duplicity in the song. After his tour and before this song, they broke up. What would you think?
Jagged Little Pill. One of the top debut albums of all time. Power.
She's a Canadian treasure. This song is in my top 10
Her "Jagged little pill" debut album... every song is fire! IRONIC, YOU LEARN, HAND IN MY POCKET, are all part of that album. "UNINVITED", OMG her vocals in that one 😲 I was in my pre teens stage. Did a speech on her life in gr 7 I believe. And this song has always been a fav of mine. I still play it when I'm mad or hurt
Agree!!
My favorite has always been "Univited"!! 💯🔥
I agree. I had this CD when it first came out and it was fire! Another great song from that album is Mary Jane
Another great song that she wrote later in her career is "Thank You" (I believe that's the name of it)
@@angelskunk2206 I actually love thank you as well! This woman could sing the dictionary and it would blow our minds! Chris Mann actually redid her thank u song at the beginning of covid, thank HealthCare and all first-line workers, it's real good too. If you haven't heard it I would suggest you check it out!
She has several good songs.... "Ironic" and "Uninvited" are 2 of my favs.
You should definitely check out red sun risings version you may like that also
She fell for dude hard and he did her wrong...and she let him have it, in one of the bggest songs, on one of the biggest albums in 1995. Great album, great performer.. side note...Flea from the RedHot Chili Peppers laid down those filthy bass runs for this song
And Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters is on drums! Alanis is a Canadian treasure and this banger is still the quintessential break up song! Love the reactions!
And Dave Navarro from the Chili Peppers (at that time) and Jane's Addiction was on guitars
@@sooankim9247 technically, he's not on the recording but yes, he is in the video and toured with her. The Foos hand-selected him from this band :)
Also Dave Navarro on guitar and Taylor Hawkins on drums. Hawkins was her drummer before he left to join the Foo Fighters and Dave from Jane’s Addiction was probably in the Chile Peppers at this time or shortly before.
@@Motorhands tbh it really sounds like a drum machine on this track. I think joining the Foo Fighters was a lucky break although I don’t know how many studio tracks Taylor plays on with Grohl laying down drums tracks on the vast majority, at least in the beginning.
Alannis blew up with this one song. Her album Jagged Little Pill is ingrained in my brain!! 😳 Phenomenal, garnered many Grammys.
Uncle Joey from Full House is her rumored target in this song.
Anyone who has ever been dumped relates, Alannis published it and makes no bones, to date.
And I love her for it!! ❤👍🏽
You can't go wrong with Alanis. Her whole Jagged Little Pill album is fire. Not one bad song on the whole thing. Great reaction!! 🙂
Have to agree. When this came out it was one of those albums that matched my life circumstances so well it will always have a special place in my heart.
Heard this was about uncle Joey from full house lol
"Ironic" and Thank you" are great songs
This was so funny to watch. I'm sure people will fill you in on who she was talking about! 😳
Jagged Little Pill is one of the top albums of the 90s and Alanis was huge. Many hits spawned off that record. This song was the break up anthem of a generation.
The song is from the album Jagged Little Pill and made Alanis Morisette a household name. The whole album had other great songs. She proved that not all Canadian women are polite and forgiving. This is from a fellow Canadian. By the way when it was played on the radio it was cleaned up a little bit.
F**k was blanked out on the radio.
Jagged little pill... one of the best albums ever!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Flea from RHCP is on bass on this too
She always speaks her mind
We loved this one back then and still do. We Norwegians love honesty and speaking out what u feel 😎😂
The same here in the Netherlands. We are pretty direct too.😬😉
As far as I no she was only 19 when she wrote that song, which is phenomenal lyric writing for one so young🤘🤘🤘
Yes thank you very much for this !!! I'm a proud Canadian 🇨🇦and went to go see her in Vancouver Canada in the mid 90's it was awesome and Jagged Little Pill was her greatest successful album. Still have the 💿 cd.❤✌🇨🇦
Alanis is from my hometown of Ottawa Canada. Most people that wre alive in the early 90's have an Alanis Morissette story...Mine is that sometime around 1992 or so, when I was in Beavers (which is Cub Scouts for little kids from 5-8) Alanis Morissette came to our meeting and sang O Canada for us. I remember thinking that she said her name was Atlantis. This was before she was in anyway famous, I think she might have been about 14 at the time.
This is rumored to be about Dave Coulier( Uncle Joey from Full House)
That's what people have speculated. She has never confirmed it.
I loved this whole album, I bought it when it came out, her second album was a bit of a letdown, but this one was great. And this song is iconic. You should also react to HEAD OVER FEET, HAND IN MY POCKET, and IRONIC….these were hits off of Jagged Little Pill.
"Head Over Feet" is my favorite, but I agree. Jagged Little Pill will always be golden.
I love this AND her second album. But yea, Jagged is a masterpiece.
I love this one and "Ironic" , 2 of my favorites. Can't go wrong with anything off of Jagged Little Pill.
Please add “Uninvited” to that list-
YES. Yes. I love this album so much.
You should binge this entire album. (And for that matter the documentary on HBO Max regarding the album and her comeback is also worth the watch.)
Alanis was 21 when the album came out and it absolutely blew up. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing the song on the radio.
The drummer is Taylor Hawkins, the current drummer for Foo Fighters.
Taylor was her touring drummer, not album drummer.
@@theonlyjonah79 No one said he was the only drummer that played with her, and in this video Taylor IS the drummer.
@@BrandonWestfall I thought you were referencing the song in general, not the video. Yes, the video is Taylor but he wasn't on the album. Dave Navarro and Flea are on the album for this song, but not the video for some reason 🤷🏼.
This is the first time I haven’t seen the famous jaw drop everyone has when hearing the theater bit for the first time, lol! But the second time got you! The entire Jagged Little Pill album is great!
Her song "uninvited " is different but just as good 👍
My favorite Alanis song!! 😍
Alanis Morissette started as a Canadian pop star in the 90's, then she debuted in the USA in 1995 w/ an 'alternative rock' sound... This album 'Jagged little pill' was a massive hit, selling over 16 million copies in the US alone, hitting #1 on the charts. It was all over radio and MTV... this was the first single, and it was followed by 'Ironic' ... 'One hand in my pocket' ... 'You live' ... 'Head over feet' .
The next Alanis album 'Supposed former infatuation junkie' came out in 1998 and sold 3 million copies, w/ the singles 'Thank you' ... 'So pure'.
She had another big single 'Uninvited'... but subsequent records did not sell as much... but she still puts out new music. Her latest record is 'Such pretty forks in the road' in 2020.
The 90s baby! Music had no boundaries! All genre's they were popping, giving a message that you wont find in today's music.
I grew up in the punk rock era. And I can you tell you that most of the actual punk rock bands of that time WISH they put out stuff this hardcore. It's such a classic. She is a punk artist at heart.
Alanis was able to articulate heartache in a very powerful way that left you in absolutely no doubt, someone shat on her and she was not gonna take it.
Fun fact: playing the drums is Taylor Hawkins who a couple years later would join the Foo Fighters
Anger, hurt, passion. She. Is. Pissed! This is art!
I was a teenager in high school when that song came out and it was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥! I have every word memorized! The 90’s had the best music hands down! Her names isn’t A-lawn-is it’s A-lan-is like Atlantis hard A like in apple. She was first married to Ryan Reynolds! That entire album was 🔥🔥🔥🔥
The clean version says, "......when you SCREW HER....!!!" I've never heard this "Dirty" version!!! Lol....I love Alanis!!!
In a time when most female singers would sing about how they hoped “he” would come back to them, this was an unapologetic f-you to a man who said he’d love her forever and then dumped her for another woman. It was angry and real and iconic.
I was 25 when this song came out and I remember me and my girlfriends getting ready on a Friday night to go to the club listening to this song. This was such a powerful and freeing song for single pissed off women everywhere!
This is a 🔥🔥🔥🔥song
The drummer ended up joining Foo Fighters.
The bass player is Flea, from The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
@@peccatumDei 🤣🤣 well flea did play with Nirvana once. But not on bass, but on the trumpet .
Btw she is still as intense today. Look at her live perfomances from 2021.🤗
"And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back, I hope you feel it! I hope you feel it!" Has to be one of the most brutal song lyrics ever recorded.
On the recording, not the video is Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers on bass, and Dave Navarro from Jane's Addition on guitar. (Dave was also on one Peppers album)
Nice reaction guys. Can't overstate how huge this song was back in the day. It makes me happy to see others appreciate it.
This is supposedly about Joey from Full House!
It's supposedly about numerous ex lovers. She never confirmed who it is about.
When this song came out in the 90s, ALL the women LOVED IT! She actually vocalised what women felt when a male would tell them WHATEVER, just because it SOUNDED good & loving, so that the woman would fall for him & then he would just dump her on a basic whim for another woman without a backward glance.
Men HATED this song back then! NONE of them wanted to have to deal with any upsets or messiness over the pain they caused another person. They just wanted what they wanted & they didn't want to have anyone dampen their fun.
My own boyfriend would literally turn off the radio or change the station or even walk out of a store when this played & would be in a really ticked off mood that he tried to get over in front of me - (probably because he would know that he would hear about how right Alanis was in this song). Luckily for me when we did break up it was NOT for a similar reason.
She has true power. Thats how you sing with your whole soul and very being!
And that my Gen Z friends, is the raw VOLCANIC fury of, " You Oughta Know"! Alanis and the 90s ROCKS 🤘🤘🤘
More Alanis!
Her live "Uninvited" is haunting! 🙏
She was hurt from a actor on FULL HOUSE his name is Dave Coulier. This was real, he finally just talked about the breakup recently. One of my favorite songs.
And has anyone noticed that the drummer is Taylor Hawkins from the foo fighters?✌️
Hawkins isn't the drummer for the song itself - that was session drummer Matt Laug in the studio. But Hawkins soon joined Morissette's touring band for this album, so he was the one around when they made the video.
And Flea on bass.
That line "you said youd love me until you died..UNTIL YOU DIED .but you are still alive!!
FUN FAX: The guitarist on this particular song is Dave Navarro from the band Jane's Addiction. And the Bass Player for this particular song is FLEA from Red Hot Chili Peppers. Side note, the "Touring Drummer" for her was Taylor Hawkins from the Foo Fighters. 🔥🔥⛽🤘
Never look at Uncle Joey the same way again lol. This was THE anthem for the angry chick, and heaps of guys loved this too. Couldn't go anywhere without hearing this. Still fire 🔥
She wrote this song about her relationship with Dave Coulier (uncle Joey from “Full House”) who she dated when she was still a teenager.
🤘🤘❤🤘🤘 This whole album is everything!!! And this is the ultimate scorned lady song!!!! 😉❤✌🏼
This song and the song scrub by TLC were written about the same guy.
David Coullier (Joey) from Full House.
Im a metal head but this album Jagged little pill is one of my top 5 albums of all time. .She was so bitter it was scary.. She did find inner peace with herself soon after this album and Im glad for her..But the raw album she made has every song worth listening too
"Every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back, I hope you feel it" is just brutal. Thank God no woman ever said that to me, because I would have never gotten over that...Ever...
Lol, same, man🤣
Jagged Little Pill got me through some tough times in college. I was 18 when this album was released. Alanis actually got her start on a Nickelodeon tv show called You Can’t Do That On Television. When they show the Kids Choice awards on Nickelodeon and they green slime them? That was started on You Can’t Do That On Television, it was a teenage comedy skit show, if they could get their cast mates to say I Don’t Know they got slimed. If they could convince their cast mates say water they got soaked. My favorite is either Perfect or Forgiven. Both from Jagged Little Pill.
"but you're still alive." ------ such a sick burn.
This was such a power song for women when it came out. She was calling this man out in strong harsh words. Every woman I knew fucking loved this song.
Yes was the first time
All I Really Want.. and You Learn. They're the best songs from jagged little pill. Alanis is a constantly evolving artist. She's moved on from this place in her life and is happily married to a very handsome n large man with 3 adorable children. Warrior, Ablaze... Reasons I Drink, is her recent stuff and definitely worth checking out. She played God in the movie Dogma lol.
One of the best songs ever written, that girl was spittin straight fire!!!!!!! Ain't no one rip their heart out and slap that shit on the page and spit that shit in the mic like that!!!!!!! She was feelin it!!!!!!!
The line was you told me YOU would love me till you died but YOU’RE still alive.
You know how when you’re in love and you say I’ll love you till the day I die.
this entire album is amazing. has you feeling every feeling there is to feel and lets you know it’s all okay 💜 it’s been in my rotation heavily since it came out.
The best part of this song is who it's about.
Haha!! Y’all faces were priceless. Carry on. Alanis came along and leveled a building with this song/album.
Also she performed this same song on the Grammys that year but instead of a rock instrumental she sings it over an orchestra and it was sooo good. Check it out!
This whole album is amazing. You should react to “ironic” “hand in my pocket” “you learn” are good ones.
Shy’s right! She’s pissed!!🔥
🔥🔥😍 LOVED it! Great job y'all!
loved this song back in the day
( still do ! )
another amazing Canadian female rocker during this era was Alannah Myles who had a major hit with a song about Elvis called Black Velvet... you will want to check that out.
Can never look at Uncle Joey from full house the same after I found out this was wrote about him 😆
Got this Cd for Christmas with my discman when I was like 12 😆 still f with it though 😆 🤣 😂
Unbelievable that she was still a teenager when she wrote this. What a talent.
REACT TO MORISSETTE SING NEVER ENOUGH
Alanis used to be a Nikelodeon girl. She acted on the kid show You Can't Do That On Television. She had a habit of falling in love with men who were older than she was, and she wrote this song about a boyfriend who left her for another girl. To this day, she never actually came out and said who the guy was, but people were speculating.
One of the biggest songs from one of the biggest albums of the 90s. It had never been laid down like this by a lady. There was no question the rage meter was maxed out.
Out of all the reaction videos to this song so far you two are the only ones who commented on the "every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back I hope you feel it!" line! She was letting him have it and wanted to haunt him for years because he gutted her! This song told women to let the anger out in the 90's = it was known as "the mad girl" song
One of the best albums from start to finish!!!!👏👏
Alanis also sings backing vocals on Dave Matthews band Don't drink the water.
Give the lady her own mic!
Such a great song from a great album. According to the RIAA, this album has sold over 33 million copies worldwide. This song is actually from her third album, not her debut album.
This song,LIVE,1995 from Letterman! SHE WAILS!!!
All of her songs are from the heart and all are wonderful.
Oh man, I absolutely LOVED this song when it came out (and still do!!)!! I blasted it in my room even though I was only 12yrs old 😂🤣 She’s a great singer/songwriter! I’m sure others have already said who the song was supposedly written about…
One of the best songs ever for ever. It’s hard to believe this song came out in 1996 or 95. It still sounds freakn modern n fresh to this very day
Was 17 when this song came out, Alanis is an absolute hero of mine, love her
definitely check out "Ironic"... also, if you like Alanis, check out two other Canadians.... Fefe Dobson and a song called "Stuttering", and Avril Lavigne and a song called "Complicated"... they are all excellent songs
