The whole album is amazing. You can literally pick any track from it and react to it and it would be a good reaction video! When this came out in 1995, it was like a tsunami; it just suddenly, almost literally overnight, became the biggest album of the year and is still one of the biggest selling albums of that decade and beyond. The trauma that must have inspired this album has became quite liberating for many people. A sign of good art. (It also does have a sense of humour.)

I'm a collector of tattoos and when this song was released I was going through a horrible, messy, petty breakup with my "soulmate"(I thought). I'm so thankful that my tattoo artist happened to be on vacation when I called! I would be living with a tattoo that said "...and every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back, I hope you feel it"! I hadn't figured out where I was going to get it, but I'm sure I would be regretting it! Lol! Awesome song and I think I burned through 3 or 4 CDs of Jagged Little Pill! Every song on that CD is fire! I love the hidden track "Your House" and it's rumored that song is about the actor Ryan Reynolds

You should check out her song Uninvited. She spent some time in India to escape her newfound fame from Jagged Little Pill, and when she finally returned to music, she brought some Eastern elements with her to create a haunting, cryptic orchestral rock song with world music influences.
It doesn’t have a music video, and while live performances are extraordinary, it’d be best to start with the original - the music speaks for itself without visuals.

It's interesting that you brought up Nirvana. Dave Grohl was the drummer for Nirvana, and eventually started the Foo Fighters as lead singer. Years before that came to fruition, Taylor Hawkins was the touring drummer for Alanis. You can see him in the background in this video. Unfortunately, Taylor Hawkins recently passed away due to an accidental drug overdose. Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers along with Dave Navarro are both featured on the album as well.

Man, I felt your breakdown on this one.
My first GF spent time with me making out on Friday before she left for some church retreat for the weekend, telling me how much she loved me etc.
Called me Sunday night and told me she wanted to meet in the stairwell (where we did a lot of our kissing) at school on Monday before class. I arrived and she was there with a friend of hers and just told me "I never want to see you again or talk to you..." and that was it. Found out through mutual friends she met a guy at the retreat.
That set the tone for all my breakups for the next 10 years. I thought that was the normal, or what was going to happen so often I would beat them to the punch. etc.
I still look back at it now and again and wonder how you can do that to someone without them even giving you a reason.
But life goes on. Have a great Christmas!

This came out in 1995, when I was 21 and just getting over my first serious GF (well, I was serious at least, not sure about her with the benefit of hindsight, hahaha!). One of the raw-est breakup songs ever written, and the timing was perfect for me! Weirdly, Alanis is also apparently the same age as me within 1 month.

What you describe in yourself, that 'interpreting the world through an unresolved trauma', is what I term "fighting ghosts".
The 'ghost' or 'afterimage' of a person or situation associated with a trauma you've gone through gets conjured up when the situation you're in feels too much like what you went through before, when you got hurt. The person or circumstances places you back in that mindset & emotion, even if it's only superficial similarities. It can be 'all women' or 'all breakups' or 'all betrayals' or whatever. So you flip out a little (or a lot) and get combative with the person "doing this to you - again".
Objective examination of the situation may prove you're misinterpreting the situation. You may have jumped the gun. Or what's happening may be unintentional or not even heading to the end result you fear. But there you are, fighting a battle that isn't even really occurring. But all you see is being back in that hellish place again, even if you're actually quite mistaken. You're "fighting ghosts".
And it's especially strange for the person getting the punishment for the situation that occurred before you even came into this person's life, a situation that isn't even happening in the moment. The smart thing is to recognize that when someone gets caught in fighting his/her ghosts, it isn't personal to YOU. Treat it like sleepwalking or like a wounded animal, because they're not fight YOU, they're fighting a pain that scarred them deep.
Alanis is very raw, emotionally, in this song. The story is that she was an underaged teen when she got into a relationship with a man ("Uncle Joey" from the TV show Full House) who was twice her age. After 2 years, he dropped her, suddenly, with no preparation or consideration for a woman closer to his age ("an older version of me"). She sometimes called his house, to talk to him, which would have helped her work through it, but he just brushed her off, claiming he was in the middle of dinner and couldn't talk just then. I suspect he made her feel irrelevant and disposable. That can't have helped.
So this song came out of the disregard of a 'man' who didn't take any responsibility for how he left a teenager shattered and broken after 2 years of telling her how much he loved her. You have to wonder if leaving her like that was a way to continue to use her for a little ego boost, that he affected her so deeply.
I appreciate that you can see her pain and relate to it. I think we all have had scarring moments in life. We can respond to those traumas by putting up walls and fighting ghosts in future relationships...or we can use it as a basis for empathy and compassion.

This song was a time piece of bent up rage of false promises, being lost and realizing the path set before you doesn't work and it never has. It is the 90's angst. This tape, because I couldn't afford CD at the time, caught me in my early 20's. I played by the rules, I fell in love and yet I was just as lost as the IV drug users dying in the street. It was sobering as well as reminding the listener that our weaknesses are our strengths.

Most people experience emotions. This song is her expression of sharing how she was betrayed. The beauty of music is we can find the ones that relate to our emotions at the time. I, personally, love the fact music and lyrics can depict how people feel. It is okay to feel negative feelings; it is how one reacts that makes the difference. Music is an art that can convey feelings that are not necessarily easy to express verbally or face-to-face with a person. That, to me, is the beauty of ALL art.

My favorite song of hers. We all called it the "mad woman song"! We all felt empowered somehow, even when it didn't relate to us at that moment. I have to add (because I can 😁) . . . check out Pink's song "Hustle" from her 2019 album Hurts2BHuman. It has a similar message, although not as much "poor me", but "too bad for you", and is an upbeat "swingin" tune. You will love it!

ah one of the many legends of grunge rock. I was a teenager at the time and all my life there'd been nothing or no one who seemed to understand me or that I could relate to. You had Metal heads and House... but Bah.... Then I heard grunge and it was like someone calling out to me ''Don't worry I hear you ''. As a teen Girl in the 90's this particular song told us it was alright to be mad .

Always enjoy the honesty! The first time I heard that song it was her voice that detracted me. It was too harsh for what I was used to. Then at some point I listened again and kind of liked it and decided to get the album and became completely devoted...at one point playing the album from beginning to end for weeks at a time. This and "Listen Without Prejudice" became almost religions. Great reaction as usual.

When my mom, my sisters and i was in the office of the funeral man (can't remember the English word) we where looking for a picture to use at the funeral. But my dad always made faces or did something weird, we where looking at the weird pictures on our phones showing them too each other. Then one of my sisters showed a picture where the lighting made my dad look kinda like a ghost and he was making a face that made him look like he had just done a prank and he was just waiting for it to happen. All of us bursed out in laughter while the funeral dude just sat there looking at us. When you are so sad and have been crying so much then laughter is not that far away. Crying while laughing happends too
