Are you planning on upgrading your motherboard? What are you going for?
but also better mobo has better socket - so i have to buy CPU too, and then you discover your new CPU works on different frequency - so you gotta buy new memory too.
what I'm getting at , is that you'd better buy new system outright when older one is no more a current generation.
and swithing mobo while it's not old enough yet is a waste of money.
Nick Grabeck As we say, it's one of the most intensive bits of PC surgery you can do, and not far off building a new PC, but if you've got a good SSD, decent cooler, and a quality graphics card you might not necessarily want to swap your entire system for a new one.
Is it necessary to reinstall windows after upgrading to new motherboard?
Chaidir Chalaf If you sign into Windows 10 with a Microsoft account then it registers your license. That means when you log in again after upgrading your hardware Windows will grab the necessary drivers and should retain license support too.
If it doesn't grab the right LAN network drivers then you might need to grab them from the board manufacturer's website from another machibs and update them manually.
Hello there as been news that Intel are going to be releasing to Intel 8 core CPUs at the end of the year will ryzen still be the best value ?????
This is terrifying. It's like defusing a bomb.

@@_bubulance_ Lmao..
10 years ago changing your motherbear was like quantum physics, 20 years ago it was like rocket science, nowadays it's just like playing with LEGO, this fit here, this fit there, wow!
@@gregojose13 yeah it’s really weird how much humanity has progressed in the last 20 years, especially with the internet where the smart people can share their knowledge with the world.
yeah
The chances of dying from changing your motherboard is low, but not 0.
good point
That low percentage got me
Ain't that a kick in the head
I know this is from 4 years ago, but this is exactly what I was looking for! So easy to follow along! Thank you.
I agree
Thank you so much! I was stressing about applying my new Motherboard and CPU so much and this just answered all my questions.
Two years after video release, you guys made me conformatble with swapping my mobo. Thanks for the very clear video!
Thanks guys, I'm comfortable replacing everything in my PC but I've never replaced a motherboard before. Seems a lot more delicate than other components, getting a new cpu and motherboard on monday so a good choice to bookmark this vid. You earned a sub too!
Nemesi Yay! Thank you :)
Clear, straight to the point and easy to follow explanations, great stuff guys!!!
And missing important steps that can easily lead to software and hardware failures.

This is a fantastic video, really informational and thorough. Hope your channel keeps growing!
The windows login tip is excellent.... something I would have missed in a hardware focused task. Thank you! :-)
Really simple and helpful thank you
Thank you for this video; I've upgraded mine to an ASUS ROG B450F, this video took away almost all of the worry for me. The tip about the Windows account was particularly helpful, as it's something I'd otherwise have missed
This is the first video that doesn't give me a headache, was about to give up. It actually looks somewhat doable now, thank you!
Thank you this was very helpful even 3 years later
Just finished my build using this for replacing mobo, ram and cpu, helped me a lot. Cheers from Newcastle!
Sweet, glad to be of service! :) What have you upgraded to?
CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 2600 3.4GHz 6-Core Processor
Motherboard: ASRock - B450M PRO4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
I love you. Thanks for this comprehensive guide.
Thanks, was a bit apprehensive, but now feel confident in proceeding.
Thank you guys, was super helpful!
thanks for a great video it has helped me replace my motherboard a lot easier than i thought it would be. Except for windows 10 needed to sorted and microsoft was a good help with that.
Glad It worked out for you!
I linked my Microsoft account to my windows before replacing mobo and it still won’t activate. I’ll be calling them tomorrow
Just the video I needed. Never done this before but seen my brother do it. He isn't available currently so I've gotta try it myself.

Cheers for this, gents! I'm about to upgrade the mobo in a "seasoned" CyberpowerPC, which will also receive a Ryzen 5 CPU, a generous helping of Corsair Vengeance RAM, and an AMD Sapphire graphics card. Looking forward to enjoying a vastly superior rig when finished.
Sweet! Sounds like it's going to be a really nice upgrade. Have fun! 😃
I love your videos. super helpful. Keep doing what you're doing!! Thanks!
The most annoying part of replacing a motherboard is plugging the power buttons back in, those wires are generally not labeled or the labels aren’t descriptive so you end up plugging the power button into the wrong socket so it won’t turn on
I was gonna upgrade my pc but now I’m scared to even touch it

Worked well enough for me! My biggest challenge was getting the HDD, Reset, and Power button wires into the correct pins.
Prior to installing your previous SDD with OS is there a need to remove all the old drivers, or will it just boot up and do it autonomously
Did you ever find out?
@@BennieDuck I heard about that, Im trying to figure it out rn because allthough not required you may run into driver issures in the future that can all be prevented if you just reinstall a fresh version of windows 10
Are there any software measures/precautions I need to take (like uninstalling drivers and such) when upgrading CPU, GPU and motherboard?
Thankyou for the video,
i've just had mine delivered today, i think i'm going to wait until the weekend before installing it so i have more time as i've never done this before & i'm a tad nervous about it

thanks a lot replaced a asrock h310cm dvs with an asrock b450m pro4-f r2.0 and a new ryzen 5 5600x and 32 gb ram couldn't have done it without you :D
Thank you so much! Just changed my motherboard and CPU and it went just like you said! I have windows 10 and the whole thing took me less than an hour from start to playing games again.
When you change your motherboard does all the things happen themselves and you just go on your pc like normal or do u get put into settings of some sort
@@MoreBeatbox yeah it did it all itself 👍🏻
Planning on changing my Asus Rampage III to a new Aorus board. Want to go from an I7-980X to a Ryzen 7 3700X. I used to have 32 GB ram but the motherboard is acting up, only 22 works right now, I know the modules of ram work however. On the new one I'll probably opt for 64GB of Hyper X rgb ram or maybe G-skill Trident Z.
Its going to be really cool!
I've ordered some of the parts :)
I have built many PCs in the past and always start fresh with a new case and all, I find this easiest. However I have never just upgraded the internals around a case that I've already had for 5 years. This is going to be a harder task I think versus just starting fresh
What will I have to look out for when I'm switching from my Intel i5 5600k/Asus Z170 Sabertooth S to the Ryzen 9 3900k/Asrock X570 Steel Legend?
I think most of us are comfortable with the mechanical disassembly and assembly of the PC. the part I would like to get more info on is the software side of things. for example, I want to use my old ssd with windows 10 installed on a new board. i have my pc set to my web account and that seems easy enough but their is always something amiss when it comes to software syncing and stuff. can someone link me to a vid or forum post that is more focused on the software side of installing a new board?
I have been looking for a video that answers your question but have yet to find one, did you find the answer to this?
@Dhars you find the answer
Thank you this is very helpful. I have an a320M/ac but I want a b450 pro as well as a ryzen 5 3600 so thank you

I am a bit late but should i remove some drivers when swapping mobos? And what about switching parts from pre build system to custom build with differend motherboard?
Store everything you want to carry over on a non OS drive, then factory reset, then install windows on the new mobo
This was really helpful. If upgrading from 1151 to am4 do i need new ram? Heard it doesnt matter because both are ddr4 but idk
You should be okay. Early Ryzen and AM4 boards were a little funny about memory, but subsequent microcode changes have alleviated most memory problems.
Im upgrading from AMD to a new msi z370 gaming plus board and a new i58400,do i need to remove any drivers etc before i do the upgrade or just follow your video? Thanks.
How would you go about removing your CPU air cooler from your cpu and swapping it out with a liquid cooler

Do you have to buy a new m.2? or are you able to use the old one from the previous motherboard??
I'm planning on upgrading my motherboard and my case at the same time but I don't know if I should stay in kabylake gen or go for coffelake and buy a new cpu
Please help!
I am quite new to PC gaming and I need to find out which motherboard is best for my msi codex 3. Do I need to use an MSI motherboard since my case is also MSI? Also, my GPU is an RTX 2070 (just incase that helps)
ItsMagMa no. you don’t need to “coordinate” any brands of parts unless you want convenience of rgb or something like that
If I replace a Micro ATX with a standard, will I need new standoffs and screws or should the ones from the micro work?
so if i wanat to change my motherboard ,i need to change the cpu ?even if I buy a compatible motherboard for the processor?
i have some questions. Do u have to reinstall windows? and what do i need to uninstall? i have a mobo that doesnt show any drivers. so can i just remove and the old mobo for a new one without worrying about the drivers?
This was great! My only question is how to I install windows on the new pc after booting it up after the replacement?
Clear and concise video guys, great job. So you regularly swap motherboards without first uninstalling old MB drivers ? I noticed a couple of other people had asked this as well.
Thanks, and honestly, yes we do. It's maybe not manufacturer-recommended but Windows is now very good at picking the right drivers for you. It is probably worth downloading your new board's drivers before you replace it - you might not have the right LAN or network drivers in place when you restart otherwise.
@@PCGamesN , thanks. That makes sense to me about the LAN drivers.
Anything I should know before changing the motherboard? Like uninstalling old drivers or backing up data. Is it ok to replace the motherboard without worrying about that stuff? I’m super lost!
We have to talk like this because
We thought it would be a good idea
To have two of us explain it instead
of one of us!
Yea
Also before putting the MB in, if you have a m.2 it’s easily to put it in before swapping. Awesome video tho
Do i have do delete any driver files if i swap my old as rock with an asus strix one?
I have an older motherboard i need to replace. what do i do about the WLAN card how do i remove and replace it?
Hello! I’m looking into upgrading motherboards in case my old i5 gets a bit rusty and needs to be upgraded.
Can I skip Step 1 if I’m willing to fresh-install?
can i make a back up of my data and just transfer it? All apps and docs as if windows was never re-installed?
I’m upgrading one of my budget builds
From a asrock b450m hdv r4.0 to a
Asrock b450m pro4 I’ve checked and it’s compatible with everything else in the pc
But is there anything I should know before doing so ?
Do I need to remove the old motherboard drivers first before I need to upgrade?
Shouldn't you remove certain drivers before shutting down so there is not a conflict at boot up?
Ahh ok, so as long as I registered my computer with a Microsoft account I should not have a problem with my hard drive stuff?. Lately I started my computer being I had to turn it off, however, it struggled going back on and turned off several times then restarted then finally went on but sent me to boot menu to do so.I built this rig many years ago and I am still running an i52500k cpu. I am scratching my head trying to figure out now that I finally got it up and running is it the PSU? or the motherboard?. I replaced the PSU a few years back and Video card. So I am unsure what to do here because I don't want to swap out motherboard just yet when I have no problem running games. I am very hesitant in swapping motherboard out being I fear of losing everything on my 3 hard drives. Could you possibly tell me some things on this?.
may be the ram if you overclocked it
Do I need to delete anything from the old motherboard like soundboard and stuff or whatever? I'm worried about that cause idk if I need to or where and what to delete, please respond and dont make it complicate
im also concerned for this too
thanks guys, switch worked flawlessly
Yay! Glad it worked out :)

Definitely dont reset your storage?? Why would you do that? If you intend on keeping your OS. And content?? I never have anyway.

If you upgrade your motherboard and cpu do you get taken into bios on boot? If so, what do you do?
my concern is the installed drivers of the old motherboard to the NVMe (whew the os is installed). should i uninstall all the drivers of the old motherboard before installing it to the new motherboard ?
Remember to look at your manual to see which pcie slot you should use.
do you have to upgrade your cpu and or gpu if your getting a new mobo?
I have a OEM license of windows, do I need to buy a new one for my new motherboard or can I transer the license some how?
Metalman google “cloning”. There are free software (Macrium I think.) that lets you make a clone of absolutely everything on your computer including windows. That’s one way to transfer windows as well as all your data over.
thing is, would chipset drivers wack out if its a completely different chipset from previous motherboard? this is where Im lost at because Id like to upgrade my motherboard, just unsure how to do it correctly without having to clean install windows again
Gonna be swapping from an old Intel cpu to a Ryzen one, how would you remove the stock intel cooler? Do you just pull the black things in the corners of the cooler back out?
And how would get the thermal paste off the old cooler? It's just rubbing alcohol, right?
PLEASE HELP ME do you need to do anything with bios and internal stuff etc
Yeah, they completely missed that bit didn't they! I know this is too late, but you will need to go into Bios and set your boot drive. Bios will refer to the drives by their model names and manufacturer so you'll just have to figure out which one is your C: boot drive from your old PC, which should be really easy in most cases/.
@@yorkshireplumbing Yooo thanks broo you helped me
@@yorkshireplumbing that's

@@yorkshireplumbing thanks man , but do i need to install windows on the new motherboard or is it installed already on my old ssd ?
utopiaopera hey!!! Do you do the bios boot after the motherboard is connected to everything ? Or before it is connected ?
What about the RAM? when do we insert that? Should we do that before we plug in the GPU after already plugging in the cables?
the rams should be installed first, easier if you have a big cooler. than the cpu and cooler, than the GPU. Don't forget to put the ram into no. 2 and 4 slots ( if you have only two sticks of course)
Is removing the old motherboard drivers required to swap boards?
