Yeah, it's another about codependency. That bridge in the middle has incredible lyrics. The whole "... and because of the things that I saw for you, I spiritually grew" lyric still gives me chills. Martin is such a great songwriter, very underrated. And Alan just knew what to do with his songs. You're right that this is almost like a different band. When you think of the poppy music they were making at the beginning of their career, the songs on SOFAD are in a completely different galaxy. It's quite extraodinary. But, it's this sort of trajectory that has made them legendary and so influential for so many other artists. SOFAD was the album that brought them well and truly out of the 80s. It was a miserable time for them but they were creating incredible pieces of art
Although Martin received the Ivor Novello award for International Achievement in songwriting in 1999. This is a fairly big accolade in the music world.
U have a lot of DM to hear , ultra , exciter , playing the angel , sounds of the universe , delta machine , spirit , and now we have memento morii its amazing how they chage
Probably one of their most industrial sounding songs. If you like this one it may be time to explore bands like Nine Inch Nails, Nitzer Ebb (who opened for DM on their Violator tour), Front 242, Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, etc. Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll recommend some tunes from them.
You are one of the cutest men on UA-cam that I have ever seen! I loved your reaction to ABC's Poison Arrows, which is one of my favorite songs of all time. Your reaction to that song helped me realize just how wonderfully arranged and wtitten it truly is. Thank you, sweet man! 🤗
Yes he is a gift to DM fans...he is patiently reacting to each and every song in order ...my goodness❤❤❤sigh he is too young for me😂 oh and Im married😂
Hearing you react to songs from SOFAD makes me think of two friends from college. The three of us would sit at lunch and have deep discussions interpreting Depeche Mode songs. Those were such good times. The funny part is that we met a guy who was a dead ringer for Dave and he would occasionally get mistaken for Dave at DM concerts.
Hi Seph. He rushes for his drugs. His drugs open his mind. He does everything to have them. You spotted the depression when he's not rushing, pushing him to get his fix to rush again. Stands alongside In your room which explains living in the world of addiction. He also Rushes, or takes drugs to get high and perform, for You, his fans.
As soon as I hear the start of this song, I start dancing. This is one of the most powerful songs DM has created and im happy you finally got to hear it !!
I find your enthusiasm so endearing and I find extra cute how you always “rush” to find a meaning. Too soon, too fast. You almost decide before the song tells you what it is. Clearly, you are here to comment, and we love the comments, just give yourself the gift of holding on the interpretation and let the song tell you what it is. Martin writes music and lyrics together, so it’s all one message. And the song always tell you what it is, if you are patient and listen for it. Martin never says what his songs are about. No one can tell you what he means, but to me it is clear in the “because of the things that I saw for you, I spiritually grew” good or bad, whoever he rushes for, has made him expand. Not better. It’s like a snake growing and shedding old skin for new one vulnerable one. I know, dark comparison, but I have been listening to DM since I was 10… Keep having fun!
I think that it's the curse of being a Reactor. I legally have to pause it and give commentary. Playing much more than about 30 seconds is a problem to 99% of copyright holders. If it were up to me i would play the entire song first then comment after it's finished. Copyright law really is strict and annoying! :(
In '93 I saw the video for Walking in My Shoes and very soon after went out and bought SOFAD on cassette(that's right, I said cassette!). Buying an entire album based on one song can be a risky proposition. In this case however, my FAITH(😉) was rewarded! SOFAD has been one of my faves for 30 years! An album I always listen to in its entirety! And yes, I did eventually buy the cd. A couple in fact.
Just got to say I love the fact that you're doing reviews of my all time fav band DM, AND you keep playing that bloody filthy DKC tune which is my all time fav video game tune... bang on!!
I remember when I, as a big Depeche fan, bought this album in 1993. The expectations were of course very high. Not least after the Violator record. And sure enough, it was a partially new sound that was played. But at the same time such a typical Depeche Mode sound. A little more guitars and a slightly more live-emphasized soundscape where not only electronics and synths were used but other instruments, not least on songs like "I feel you" and a few more. - For the first time, Depeche also used real drums on some of the songs where Alan had to step in and learn the drums. But at the same time, there are many songs here without any guitars at all; "walking in my shoes", "judas", "one caress", "in your room", "higher love". So the partially new sound on this record didn't come as anything startlingly new. Besides, they had used guitars before in songs like "personal jesus, "policy of truth" etc.
@@stopbunsen It is possible that elements of guitar are involved in in your room - even if it is not heard - and especially walking in my shoes. But it is not significant in any way. And the guitar that can be heard in the refrain of walking in my shoes in the Devotional tour's live version, does not transform the song into a rock song based on guitars - compared to e.g. i feel you or personal jesus where the riffs of the songs are based on a clear guitar riff. The small element of noticeable guitars that may be present in these two songs had Depeche mode until then in many songs, even on some songs as far back as the 1983 record "Construction time again" had such elements. - in the chorus of "and then" for example.
I was torn between this and In Your Room, when I bought the album back in the day. For raw unadulterated Angst of the 1st Order, Rush takes it! I'm amazed at you Seph! Sorry I've just stumbled on this and when Dave refers to 'Rushing' it is in the way of the _Drug._ David Gahan is one of the few British Vocalists with that distinctive Growl, when he goes full tilt!
My top 3 of this album with walking in my Shoes and In your room. Anyway, Songs of faith and devotion is one of the best album ever produced with Violator.
I was running the streets with a guy friend of mine once and I had this cassette playing. When this song got to the strange breakdown in the middle, he says, that's it! I was like what? He said that's what it's like to have sex on acid. I asked what he meant and he said that's what it sounds like and you can see that sound. It was a trip just hearing him say that.
Rush,as in the rush of adrenaline you get froma drug. Which is what he sang alot about as he was heavy into drugs bk in tbe day. So advanced for their time too. He's saying, he literally would go to the ends of the earth for that feeling and drug
Poor you has reached the peak. SOFAD and Ultra IMO are by far their best albums. After that it may never be THAT exciting again to discover a new dM album. Also: wait for the next song! 😏
Easily the most intense, frenetic tune on the record. You highlight the force Dave puts behind his vocals. (1:59) That is even more pronounced on the SONGS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION LIVE version as you elude to. I love the live version of this album so much so that I've spent more time listening to it than the studio version. "It's how you change in a relationship. It could also be interpreted as that. How you rush into things. It's like... you're in a relationship. It's how you change for that person. The things you do to make them happy. Or make yourself happy." (5:11) I like this musing. It reminds me of perhaps my favorite Morrissey lyric, "Such things I do just to make myself more attractive to you. Have I failed?" from "The Last of the Famous International Playboys."
Sorry. Snarky comments are in my DNA. I think you're going to love all of the Rush dance remixes on the Condemnation EP. It's a good time. I love to pull them out in a set when the crowd is really going.
Such a dramatic and deep song. Love it.
Btw this was the time where Dave had long hair. He looked like Jesus lol.
During recording Alan had longer hair too.
I cant wait to see the official videos haha
Such a powerful song and amazing live performance during Devotional Tour (specially the drummer 😉) #FangirlAlert 🚨🤭 ❤
❤😂
Hypnotic song, dramatic, dark and deep at the same time. I love it. So powerfull.

Great track, I like the textures to this and the mid bass synths sound. Also the drumming is amazing.

I'm looking forward to it all! I'm very much invested in this chronological journey im taking :D

@@westernsect5773love them!
One more great one from DM
Gold but very underrated. Its defintely my second fav ever big time.

awwww stop it you xD I'm not worthy of such flattery!
Yeah, a beauty :) Remember the B-sides Seph, especially "Death's Door"👍
You should react to the live version of this from Devotional tour. Proper hectic

During the Devotional Tour (1993) the drums were played by Alan itself. This song in particular was the most energetic one.

This and One Caress were my two favs off Faith...
I was never daft on the studio version of this. I thought watching the live version with Alan showing off his drumming skills was much better
Strangely enough, when Mart wrote this song (the entire album actually) he wasn’t aware of the heroin addiction of Dave yet.
In '93 I saw the video for Walking in My Shoes and very soon after went out and bought SOFAD on cassette(that's right, I said cassette!).

Extra...... Dave in top form, and Alan top on drums......
Well done… next song is one caress🥰
This is the techno influenced song we thought the whole album would sound like! Definitely my 2nd favorite track on the album.

Walking in my Shoes and In Your Room do have guitar on them actually. It's just kind of subtle. It's more towards the end of both of the tracks.
@@stopbunsenThinking the same thing 😃

the drums at the beggining are a sample from the song On TV by Renegade Soundwave, and that song samples Led Zeppelin, which is kinda funny
Disgracefully, this song was only played live in 1993 (This version) and 1994 (with a special mix as the opener of the show)
I agree..Not sure why it never gets played live.
Because it requires Alans drumming and other meticulous programming
Good reaction!!!
Creo que me gusta más la versión en vivo, pero son igualmente impresionantes ambas.
I believe Alan played Real drums on this track
Ooooooooh yeeeeeaaaaaah ❤ sexiest drumming ever
I wish they would play this song live, it’s so sad they keep playing the same songs over and over again…
Rush goes hard

haha thats ok. If i miss something that is super obvious i should be called out on it haha
