Alan has always been the sweetheart of the band. He was gorgeous in his younger years. Anton Corbijn designed the live scene for the first time. DM is always better live 😊.
However, I think that Anton Corbijn was involved in the scenography also during the World violation tour -1990. At least he was the one responsible for the album cover for Violator and he directed all the music videos released from the record. And the scenography during the world violation tour was very typical of Anton Corbijn with the same graphic themes as album covers and videos, with screens on stage showing pictures taken by Anton, and that rose and a lot of brush strokes etc. illustrated in the music video for "clean"...
Do not be affraid :) "Ultra" is fantastic :) And then "Exciter", Love them both... Not going further, but every album has the diamonds on it :) By the way, "The singles 86-98" contains one new song... It will be easily an S-rank... It's so deep, that became the favourite love song of mine.... It's called "It's only when I lose myself"... A lot of BANGERS still to come, so don't you worry Seph ;)
@@kev6333 The "funny" thing about the b-side "surrender" is that Martin thought this particular song was so good. He mentioned in several interviews "surrender" about one of his own favorite songs. I'm not a big fan of this particular song myself, but apparently quite a few are, including Martin.
This is their greatest performance ever!! And yes Dave was high AF during this concert and you can tell as the concert goes on. He even stage dives during this performance LOL.
Alan does have the charming looks out of anyone in the band, a lot of Depeche fan girls tend to go after him a lot haha, tho Andy does get a honorable mention for his slick back hair and glasses
Seph, with every next song the stage opens up more and more. The production was fantastic and Daves voice really has „meat on the bones“. His moves are cool, elegant but also powerful. Pay attentiom!
The first time I watched this concert (and I've watched it maybe 200-300 times since), my jaw was on the floor. It was everything to me. Seeing you react to it reminds me of that first time. It is just very very special. Can't wait to see you watch the rest!!
IS A GREAT SONG AND SOUND AMAZING IN THIS CONCERT.. :) AND THE STAGE IS AMAZING TOO...THE LIGHTS, THE SCREENS AND.....WAIT TILL YOU SEE THE SCREENS ON THE FOLLOWING SONGS.. YOU'RE GOING TO GO CRAZY... SALUDOS DESDE MEXICO.. ENJOY
They're not bad after 1994 Seph. It's just that something is missing, after Alan left - in my opinion. Something special in the sound disappeared that made Depeche's sound so unique. - It is difficult to put into words what disappeared. My feeling is that the producers on the records after 1994 tried to sound like Depeche should sound, so to speak. A kind of cover of themselves. But it is very possible that those views are mainly with those of us who have followed the band almost from the start. Newer fans likely don't think this way. You can form your own opinion and see if you agree or if you don't notice any noticeable difference, before and after Alan.
Il y avait un avant depeche mode avec alan et le depeche mode d après personnellement je préfère le depeche mode avec alan mais je les adore quand même DM FOREVER AND EVER ❤❤❤
Not to spoil anything but considering Dave does a stage dive during the "In your room" song later in this concert, i'd say he was on something.... And if i recall right, they had to cancel a couple of concerts during this tour because Dave was not "there" if you catch my drift.... So glad he got himself out of that period in his life and i believe he has been sober since 1996/97 until present day! He was really lucky, and so were we, the fans!
You had me laughing throughout this video. IMO, Dave matured into a grown sexy man in the D tour. Phenomenal talent, voice and physical presence. ❤ 😆😆😆he can never keep his clothes on. 🕺🏻hey, alright by me. 😌Alan need I say more. 🙆🏻♀️
Seph, thank you.❤ Your videos take me back to the past, to places when I was younger and discovering the magic of DM. They are also the only thing that helps me through the suffering I feel now. Tomorrow and Sunday they play DM at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. There will be almost 100 thousand people. I was supposed to be there on Sunday. One girl held my ticket until Monday. Unfortunately, I can't go. It's my lifelong dream - a concert in Berlin. This is where the Black Celebration album was created, where Martin wrote his best lyrics. I wanted to visit Hansa's studio where the album was created, go to the Berlin Wall, enjoy the atmosphere and then experience the amazing concert. Unfortunately, life has other plans...😢
101 was prior to release of Policy of Truth.. Alan always remixed the tracks for each tour, so they are always slightly different typically, well except current concerts, it kinda has stayed the same over the years outside of ludicrous drum solos.
Yeah the live sound has suffred since Alan left. I mean up until the Touring The Angel it was still OK, but after that it just wasn't as good. Whoever is doing the live mixes/programing just doesn't have IT.
Also this was when he changed things a bit too! He always wanted to be Bowie on stage. This tour he decided to be more of himself and damn did it make a difference!
Yes the stage is made of screens who will be used after ;) Plus the totems back like as on the LP cover… on the « i feel you » single cover there was numbers on each one who was the birth date from each DM members
"Policy of truth" didn't exist when 101 took place - so it wasn't played during the 101 tour. The 101 tour followed the "Music for the masses" record released in 1987. - "Policy of truth" was on the Violator record that came out in 1990. They also toured after the Violator album with the "World violation-tour". A rather forgotten tour, despite being almost as good as Devotional in my opinion. - Saw them in Stockholm both in 1990 during the "World violation tour" and "Devotional" in 1994. But for some reason the "World violation tour" became a smaller/shorter tour even though the Violator record was a big success. No official footage exists from that tour, as far as I know. - Best to add "as far as I know" because soon someone will probably come and say that there is...😊 - Apart from the music video for "World in my eyes" which is mostly filmed from the "World violation tour" though.
One of the Depeche Mode biographies I read said the stage production on the Devotional tour was so costly that they had to do a second leg which they called the Exotic tour. Exotic’s stage set up was very much scaled down compared to Devotional. By then it was very obvious Dave was deep into the throws of addiction. He had a crazed look in his face and would throw the microphone stand with such force that I thought he was going to hurt a stage hand. Dave’s voice was also beginning to sound raspy.
Don’t be scared for the future. As a huge DM fan I think Ultra their next album is actually one of my favourites. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with that one. I actually think Ultra for me is one of their last great albums. And the videos for it are awesome. Their latest album is also a bit of a return to form too. Are you doing the whole of devotional ? If so are you not following the order of the DVD in terms of songs ? It would make sense to do that
He only starts to look drugged out as the show progresses and he gets sweaty/takes his shirt off. You can really see he almost looks emaciated. His voice has never sounded so amazing as it did for this tour.
"So here's Alan, looking fantastic as ever! Now, I don't know about you guys, I think that he's actually quite good lookin?! I can appreciate a guy, ya know? And I think that Alan's probably one of the best looking out of the group? Just sayin', just sayin'. Ya know, he's always got the good hair." (4:38) Super cool, dude! And you are right! Alan's definitely the handsome one, and the other band members knew it too. They nicknamed him "Slick." "He's actually got a smile on his face. Do you know, ya know, everybody's been saying in the comments that this is like, he was drugged out of his head at this point. Right? But to be fair, he doesn't actually look like he is drugged. It doesn't look like he's high at least. Not at the moment. It's just my opinion, though, I might be wrong. Some people can really hide it." (7:19) Oh, Seph. Dave looks super duper high here. That big smile on his face definitely looks like a drug fueled smile! "I love how there's a dedicated camera directed at his butt at all times! Have you noticed this? There is a dedicated camera for his butt!" (11:21) As soon as I saw Dave's butt wigglin', I knew what was coming! And you didn't disappoint! 😆 This is just a joy to watch. You are totally blissed out here!
In all seriousness, I’d say that this is without question the most well-executed live version Depeche Mode ever did of this song (and the same goes for every song featured in “Devotional,” for that matter). Needless to say, I was SHOCKED to read about the horrors they’d gone through back in 1993-94, but that didn’t stop them from turning in magnificent performances here. For the record, the original studio version of this tune has a great-enough R&B vibe and some rather sexy vocals despite the song advising against lying, but THIS version almost sounds like they could’ve thrown in a rap for good measure with that awesome beat. Not to mention - Gahan’s voice and dancing in this excerpt and throughout “Devotional“ constantly hold my attention. Ditto for his “stripteasing.” Anyway, I liked most of the other performances of this song DM turned in later in their careers, but the closest rival to this version would have to be the one from their “World Violation Tour.”
This tour was done in a big way in every sense of the word. And yes, Alan is a good looking man.. though I'm forever a Martin girl. I echo some of the other comments here... don't be apprehensive... there really is still a lot to look forward to with DM past Devotional. And the fact that they kept going on, after Dave, after Alan, and now, even Andy... trust me there will be songs that have the S factor...
many comments are repeated (yes I read some) and spoilers!!!! (I did it once and got a NO-GO) In fact, this concert was 30 years ago. SETH, next please. I look forward on it.
Don't be afraid to proceed brother. It's true that this is the end of the golden era. But in my opinion 1997s Ultra, 2001s Exciter and 2005s Playing the Angel are amazing albums and fit right up there with the rest of the albums. For me the big drop off comes after that.
The words remind me of a break up/make up/break up relationship I had between 2011 and 2015. "never again is what you swore the time before" we'd fight, I'd leave, but I kept going back to that person again and again. Glad that's over.
This tour was magic, stage design and performance, best of the best😎 But, for the first time i do not totally agree with you🙈 Daves voice get some improvement, in general, clear. And on the most songs on this tour it worked out. But especially here in this song, he press sometimes the words out. Was mutch better in 1990… Warch here ua-cam.com/video/S6CvWo7vx2s/v-deo.html At 1.03.30 Sound mutch „clearer“ without „pressing“. But hell yes, was a good start after higher love😊 next song is a burner, this because of the new version from Alan😎
I will never understand people saying a live performance or vocal is better. It has more energy, sure, the lights and audience can make it more exciting, but aurally, the tone is not better, just louder. When you’re in front of an audience that’s screaming and the music is loud, you just sing loud so you can hear yourself. It’s like singing with headphones when you can’t hear yourself. It’s less controlled, he’s short of breath and he just pushing out as much air as he can. For a live show, he does a great job, but it’snowhere near as good as a studio recording where you can control your tone and levels.
They had to scale down for the second leg of the tour called The Exotic Tour because they were burning through money with the elaborate stage. When they came back for the second part the screens were gone and it looks more like 101.
The best vocals on lp as on live for Dave are definitely on this period but it’s also kind of sad, strange or unfair in regards to is way of life then and all drugs he had must managed to live with… it is noticed too with the songs recorded for this LP the better songs recorded in the worst conditions ever for them… Sadly the best songs for artists often comes in sad and difficult moments… The worst will be after the tour for the next LP recording, Dave’s heart attack, overdose and Martin Gore was thinking to must finally do it alone in solo, Dave was almost unable to sing, it had been a miracle some songs vocals had been recorded syllable after syllable… ULTRA next LP is emotionally intense and great too
And about the drugs… nobody knew about it from the fans in this very moment. For shure, after years, when we knew it, ok than you can see it sometimes, maybe😅 However, as far as i know, dave missed just 2 or 3 shows on this tour. And this is incredible for a junkie, sorry to say it just like it is. Cant wait for the next song, thanks seph for your videos. I love it like always😊🥰
Yeah same here, I believe it got cut out due to the number of songs. But I believe the uploader of the video decided to include and combine together the songs not included in the DVD version
Aaron is correct. The version im watching has all the songs verified by my friend who has been helping with the DM song and album orders haha The reason i have him do the order is because i dont want to know what is coming up next "I love a good surprise" :D
Dave said that when you are on stage it's the biggest high you can have and nothing can compare, that's why he turned to drugs to try and capture that high when not performing.
And niw that Alan is gone they have ti change the band direccion, they do amazing tours, change a lot of versions, normaly pass from original version speed track to a slowly version but they make a lot of atención at the vocal parts,, and backing vocals all changes to better performance,,,
Maybe you will notice it this live had been recorded during the tour in different locations in Europe and there are sometimes the vocal and video that won’t match. The mounting sometimes taking the vocal from a concert on the video from another one 😅 I don’t like it but so many does the same. I always prefer a whole performance with all its imperfections ;)
It was not the pinnacle of DM. They had just one objectively "bad" album - Spirit, which is one of the last albums, but all the others had at least 3-5 great tracks each. So it is just "the popular opinion on the internet", nothing more really.
I think the comments you’ve heard about them going down hill after SOFAD is leading you astray. Don’t let other’s opinions sway you. I think the best way to look at it is they are two different bands. Once Alan left it became DM 2.0. There are plenty of new fans that prefer the newer material. They definitely sound a bit different after Alan. Better or worse? That’s for you to decide.
Hi Seph! As someone here wrote before, every version of the new and old tracks from the Devotional setlist is awsome, I heard and watched some songs from the Violation tour and really prefer this tour. And about Alan Wilder being a good looking bloke, give me your final opinion after see him behind the drums... pure fire my friend! 🔥🤩🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🤭
@@SephPlays I can't even understand how you can confuse them 🤭, I mean... a)Andy: tall, ginger head & humorous guy with glasses, b)Alan: cool haircut, good looking, trained musician, confident & well spoken man... the differences are obvious my friend. 😉🤭😘
Dont get me wrong...while this is the pinnacle...doesnt mean DM goes off the rails completely ...we devotees are very picky ...thats all...I am a fan of each and every album...they do good work ...but its just not up to the big four (BC, MFTM,Violator, and SOFAD ) so no fear...
Totally. Ultra in my opinion is a huge huge masterpiece, though not up there with the 4 others, it’s still amazing. Let’s not forget their recent album, amazing as well.
The Devotional Tour and its extensions (Exotic and Summer 94 Tours) were monstrous... some say the staff even included a full time psychologist and a drug dealer (i have no proofs but also i have no doubts that this happened)
And you don't have to worry, it's not downhill from here to every one, i think that after ULTRA and the Singles 98 colection... DM releases stopped to be universaly and unanimously loved and thats fine in my book, to give you a quick example with no spoilers, a track from the 2001 Exciter album, one of the most hated singles in DMs career ever it's in my personal Top 10 DM songs of all time... so in a certain way it's going to be interesting to watch the path you will take.
Im getting clockwork orange vibes? Is that intentional or am i just very naive? Gore might not be the lead singer but he's definitely the brains of the operation. Also as ashamed as i am to admit it i had a 25 year heroin addiction and you soon get passed the point of being 'high'... he was probably using at this point simply to be able to function.
Hi Seph, i told you,,,,, live versión more artistics and better sounding, i think that dave, s voice change from now1993, like passing from pop singer to a deeper baritone,,,,
@@SephPlays Dream On and Freelove are very good singles but overall there will be lot of D and E rank for sure on Exciter, but Ultra has that very Depechy style you love, at least some of the songs :D Exciter is overall slow and boring, more jazz, blues style but in a bad way.
The Devotional Tour is the best version of every DM song.
Fr i love rush from devotional
Agreed💯
This concert should last 6 hours.... Can never get enough of it.

Don't be afraid to proceed brother. It's true that this is the end of the golden era. But in my opinion 1997s Ultra, 2001s Exciter and 2005s Playing the Angel are amazing albums and fit right up there with the rest of the albums. For me the big drop off comes after that.
No for Exciter but Momento Mori is amazing
The words remind me of a break up/make up/break up relationship I had between 2011 and 2015. "never again is what you swore the time before" we'd fight, I'd leave, but I kept going back to that person again and again. Glad that's over.
Sounds kinda sad as well 😔
Still a great band
This tour was magic, stage design and performance, best of the best😎
But, for the first time i do not totally agree with you🙈
Daves voice get some improvement, in general, clear. And on the most songs on this tour it worked out.
But especially here in this song, he press sometimes the words out. Was mutch better in 1990…
Warch here ua-cam.com/video/S6CvWo7vx2s/v-deo.html
At 1.03.30
Sound mutch „clearer“ without „pressing“.
Official remixes are clues to some of live arrangements 😉
For shure, after years, when we knew it, ok than you can see it sometimes, maybe😅
However, as far as i know, dave missed just 2 or 3 shows on this tour. And this is incredible for a junkie, sorry to say it just like it is.
Cant wait for the next song, thanks seph for your videos. I love it like always😊🥰
Yep Alan is the best looking drummer ever 😂
The best good looking drummer/pianist/keyboard player ever 😉
I'm sooooo glad im not the only one xD
@@nylavillasis3451 absolutely💕
My DVD of the devotional tour has world in my eyes after higher love 🤔
Yeah same here, I believe it got cut out due to the number of songs. But I believe the uploader of the video decided to include and combine together the songs not included in the DVD version
Aaron is correct. The version im watching has all the songs verified by my friend who has been helping with the DM song and album orders haha
The reason i have him do the order is because i dont want to know what is coming up next "I love a good surprise" :D
My dvd misses both Policy of Truth and Halo, but they can be watched separately via Extra songs.
Dave said that when you are on stage it's the biggest high you can have and nothing can compare, that's why he turned to drugs to try and capture that high when not performing.
And niw that Alan is gone they have ti change the band direccion, they do amazing tours, change a lot of versions, normaly pass from original version speed track to a slowly version but they make a lot of atención at the vocal parts,, and backing vocals all changes to better performance,,,
Best tour and best album
Yep very expensive stage/tour.
Alan fan girl alert!!!!
@@ninawildr4207 absolutely yes! 😉
It took me nearly half a year to even learn the difference between alan and andy. I kept getting them mixed up haha
@@SephPlays I can't even understand how you can confuse them 🤭, I mean... a)Andy: tall, ginger head & humorous guy with glasses, b)Alan: cool haircut, good looking, trained musician, confident & well spoken man... the differences are obvious my friend. 😉🤭😘
I mean its obvious now. But for sooooooo long i was pretty much guessing who was who in my reactions xD
All in ONe :)) ...
@@AaronT04 agreed💯
And the rock n roll hall of fame which has always seemed a bit silly to me as an Englishman should have been inducted into depeche mode.
Hi Seph, i told you,,,,, live versión more artistics and better sounding, i think that dave, s voice change from now1993, like passing from pop singer to a deeper baritone,,,,
I agree with you on this one!
When you move on to the first song without Alan "Barrel Of A Gun" you will feel the emptiness of him not being there... Strange but very true
Ultra is very good, Exciter sucks really badly..
Exciter is great, it's just different
This is what scares me. Not even the fans can agree >.>
@@SephPlays Dream On and Freelove are very good singles but overall there will be lot of D and E rank for sure on Exciter, but Ultra has that very Depechy style you love, at least some of the songs :D Exciter is overall slow and boring, more jazz, blues style but in a bad way.
Exciter is decent. It’s like 5/10 to 6/10, it’s probably the least favourite for many DM fans honestly
