  • Lets talk about Depeche Mode in this video where I'll be reacting to the song Walking in My shoes, from the album Songs of faith and devotion. I'll be analysing the song from the perspective of a music producer and looking into the production aspects of what makes this song what it is.

This song was actually the 2nd Single off SOFAD after "I Feel You" and the release date was actually today or yesterday 26/04/93

To the last sound you are wondering about how its done...It also could be a Trautonium!
BTW...If you listen further to this album you will also end up at "Mercy in you" "Rush" and last but not least "Higher Love" which are also brilliant from a production kind of view.

Yes indeed, that's a very strong Depeche Mode song, with so much depth and atmosphere - kind of strange how I didn't appreciate it way back (along with, I FEEL YOU), but guess that my music tastes were still developing. NEVER LET ME DOWN AGAIN, would also be a great song by the band, to analyse.

First, let me thank you for following your viewers suggestions & analysing / reacting to this masterpiece. Former DM band member A. Wilder, combined w/ producer Flood were a unstoppable duo.

    • @fabricebeudon7617

      Yes yes yes ;)
Especially when there are in fact nearly no instrument… yes and no in the same time because almost all sounds (maybe all) are in fact samples. They sampled drums sound as Alan said in an interview telling he wanted in the same time manipulate the sound as a drum machine but with an organic sound. So he played drum, recorded, sampled and so on with effect, sequencer… They done the same with strings. All strings sound are samples taken from orchestra records. They could have used real strings players like with « one caress » but no ! They could have used synthesizers to create strings sounds but no ! Just samples
And that’s magical… Alan wilder and Flood made a masterpiece. It would be interesting to see and hear the studio session process, how they made it. Are they the only band to work like that ? I don’t think there is another band to used samples as they did. The level of sound art, samples manipulation is outstanding !!!!
And as said in the video, another kind of DNA sound of DM is the level of layering ! So much layers, sounds coming from everywhere and matching perfectly is awesome ! You could hear a song several time and discover every time something you didn’t pay attention to !

Greatest band ever. The song in your room is one of the best songs on this album. I found this as a teenager and I love them. I think the album before was Violator and I think the song Enjoy the Silence is on it and that’s one of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard. I love them Dave Gahan is an amazing singer as is Martin. We sadly miss Alan so much. This song is 30 years old I think and it’s better than anything I’ve heard on the radio in the last decade.

Some recommendations: Never Let Me Down Again (1987), World In My Eyes (1990), I Feel You (1993), Stripped (1986), Strangelove (1987), Black Celebration (1986) ...

Amazing analize ,this song is so different and so deep when u hear it live,it makes u scream like a maniac,i had the chance to go to theyr tour this year and last year 2 times in Paris and once in Berlin, the best thing i've done in years i can say,and as a new thing to hear further would be 'A question of time' (u can find the live version wich is so much better to analize in my opinion),or another grate song is 'Never Let me down again' from 101 album(as well live version) ,until next time fellas:)

Hi. Nice review. Very interesting analysis of the mix and production ! This song and this album are so great.
To answer your question, the sound at the end is a distored electric guitar played with an e-bow (so played with slides but it is not a "slide guitar"). Martin plays this part live using a Gretsch (I believe it is also one of his Gretsch that was used for the record).

There's an AI generated Depeche Mode style song, definitely worth checking out, LIKE A MYSTERY, featured on a channel called Andrea Fryer. I was sceptical before I listened, but the result is very interesting and highly disturbing (in equal measure!). Let's just say, if the UA-cam file was merely titled, "New Depeche Mode Song", or, I just happened to hear it on the radio (without any further knowledge), I don't think I'd be able to tell it wasn't legit. My only criticisms are, it's a bit on the short side, and maybe the lyrics could be improved, but that aside...

David's voice is good but it's really Martin Gore's creativity that is what makes DM who they are and why they are so popular. You're right that they could have used another singer and still did just as well as long as it was a good lead singer. David was just lucky to be paired up with Martin Gore. Same goes with the other 2 guys.

Flood and Alan Wilder crafted this masterpiece. Dave was in and out of the studio out of his mind up on drugs. Alan spent day and night in the studio. Martin was coked out and Fletch did nothing but undermine Alan and complain. You say you were wrong about Depeche mode SOFAD. Until u produce an album as good or the equivalent keep making stupid UA-cam videos and trying to call yourself a producer. For one never heard of you, I hear back street boys need another producer…
