- Kawai GX3 vs Shigeru Kawai SK3 Grand Pianos - Main Differences and Demonstration
In this video, Colin - Sales Manager here at Richard Lawson Pianos - looks at all the main differences between two of Kawai’s most popular grand pianos: the GX3 and the Shigeru Kawai SK3. Even though they are identical in length (188cm, which is an ideal size for the home, without compromising on string length and soundboard size) they sound completely different. Due to the SK3 being handcrafted with higher quality components e.g. its air-dried soundboard, hand-pressed hammer felt and spruce back beams, it has a far richer and more colourful sound throughout when compared to the GX3. Colin demonstrates both pianos in turn, and this really shows just how clear that difference is: the SK3, with its wider tonal palette, allows the pianist to express themselves to the full, with the piano able to respond to everything that’s being asked of it.

Very informative video. Thank you 😊
Great video. I currently have a Kawai GL40 I got brand new in 2024. I love this piano as it was a big upgrade over the Kawai GL10 I had before. We are moving into a bigger condo with higher ceilings and I am considering upgrading to either a GX2 Aures 2, GL50, GX3 or maybe even an SK2 since I have a full trade in option. A GL50 vs GX2/3 vs SK2/3 would be super neat. Kind of leaning on a GX2 Aures 2 as I could play silently but wondering if the action would be compromised. If money were not a limiting factor I would go for either the GX5 or SK3. Which would you recommend? My goal is to memorize all the Chopin Etudes by memory
Fantastic piano and review. Love it 😍
Glad you liked it!
Big thanks for the video!!!!!
You're welcome - glad you enjoyed it!
Most informative. Thank you.
That's great, glad that you found it helpful!
Very good technical video. May I suggest in the future to compare the 2 by playing the notes to illustrate your point. For example, you have more sustain, play GX3, then play SK3. It's very possible that the recording will not render justice. Of course, the action difference with the feel cannot be transmitted...
masterful summary. thank you.
Really glad you liked it and found it helpful!
Just got my new sk3 last week! It sounds great just like Hamburg Steinway :)
Could you tell us the rationale in getting the SK3 over the GX3? Is the SK3 worth it? Thanks.
Great video, really informative

Do SK2 / 3 come with the option of having ATX? Thanks for the useful info.
Glad you found the video helpful. The Shigeru Kawai pianos aren't available with the ATX Silent System - at least not yet, anyway. Thanks
@@RichardLawsonPianosLtd I have just been told by a Kawai representative that they are now available with the new ATX4
Another difference is that the bass strings on the Shigeru are hand wound and I don’t believe they are on the GX series?
Yes, that is correct.
The shigeru sounds less harsh.
Name of the song?
Schubert's Impromptu 3 in G-flat major, D. 899 (Op. 90) no. 3
