Its important to remember that these are all trap beats. This is such a small area of music. Would be amazing to see this done with other genres. There's potential for a whole series!
I would say this varies a lot per genre. Orchestral music is probably a lot more melody reliant, while something like prog rock is more reliant on good drums (shoutout to Neil Peart)
I loved beat 2 more! ...the guy who made the drums as a beginner did a good job but needed to crank them up a little. the drums were ok but too low. And about the first beat, of course the melody was too basic, but also I feel like the hi hat was too loud and the 808 too saturated or over clipping. I had to reduce a litte my studio headphones but it hit hard. Both had their good and bad. we are here to learn and get experience. thanks to all who participated.
I think it was purposely done that way, knowing that you can still make adjustments to your taste… even on Type beats here on UA-cam, the HiHat is always loud with clipping 808s
Honestly that question is really dependent on the genres. Honestly some genres you get enough rhythm from the melody without the need for much drums like soul, jazz, and traditional gospel and there are others that are drums or die, like Reggae, Hip Hop (and ALL of its subsets), and afrobeat. Of course there is Pop, Rock, and Metal where both are absolutely essential or else it would be what it is.
Indeed. I would very much say it is genre dependent. Think about a minimalistic techno track... that's mostly gonna be driven by the drums and just some melody accents. Then at the same time, a throwback eurodance track would always have the same drums and be completely reliant on the melody hook...
Loved this experiment. The important of the two components don't really differ, since they are both required to make a complete beat composition but drums are just something that I think the average listener picks out as listening markers. The thing that stitches your melody to the template.
Tbh this video totally changed my mind on the importance of drums. I always thought the melody was the key but I’m realizing the drums can really make or break a song!
I recently thought about this, pretty interesting video simon. Both are super strong and lead the song, having a good melody elevates a song to another level, but so do the drums.
0:40 But it’s actually the reverse when you talk about a producer like Decap. With him, it’s like melodies are just melodies…the DRUMS are what really distinguishes his tracks. 🔥🤷🏽♂️
Simon, I hope you see this. So In my opinion, both are important for their own reasons. The drums are like the nervous system and the melody is the skeletal system. The drums add to the song and make it sound better but the melody is the base for the song
Both are important, its like bread, Peanut butter and jelly. Bread is the vocal Pj is the melody Jelly is the drums Individually all can be eaten and sufficient. You can have all three at the same time and have the best blend
My take on Drums vs Melody: I rarely, if ever, make the staaaank face to just a melody.... BUT when you gimmie some crazy HARD hitting drums that STAAAANK face might be coming out!
Great video! I've got an ideea, what if you make Artist Vs Producer? Just like you did in this video. A team with a beginner producer and an expert artist and a team with an expert producer and a beginner artist. EDIT: If you are using premiere pro, you can actually remove the background noise by selecting the audio, then going to essential sound, preset-dialogue-clean up noisy dialogue. There you have the section "repair" where you can reduce noise (the bg noise), humble (I wouldn't recommend), de hum, de ess and reduce reverb. Hope this would help you!
I feel the main thing that differentiates a new producer to a seasoned one is the melody i started out just laying drums over loops because it was much easier So i would choose melody is slightly more important Music is rhythm (drums) and feelings (melody)
Hi Simon, I hope this message finds you well. I'm a huge fan of your work and really enjoy watching your videos on UA-cam. I have a small request. I've noticed that you've never created a type of beat featured in the song "Inna - Hot," which has similarities to "Mr. Saxobeat." They are popular songs from Romania I think. Could you consider making a remake of "Inna - Hot" or something similar in a future UA-cam video? That would be awesome!
when there's more rhythm involved in the sample itself, it allows you to do less with the drums as it does actually create movement. As well as factoring in melodic elements with call and response; because it fills out a lot of space in areas you might think to add drums, to compensate for the space. With that said, it works vice versa imo.
Hey maybe it's the bass, the bass is fondamental to your beats as it's actively being both a good rythmic and melodic element to your track. But anyway honestly yeah the answer is that both melody and drums are equally important.
depends on the genre, but for most genres the melody is more important, for example jazz and classical doesnt need, and most of the time, doesnt have drums, but breakcore or any extentions of it (drum and bass etc).most rock, metal, grunge, punk, and most of that kind of similliar stuff is mostly melody, ambient aswell hiphop probably not but stuff like ambient pop and most genres melody is more important
i just felt like the first beat was expert melody + expert drums lol i thought this was gonna be more like, bad melody and good drums vs good melody and bad drums, but not really, both were good beats, it all came down to personal preference really
i feel like it's definitely easier for drums to carry a weaker melody, but a weak melody can't carry even the best drums. it ends up being better to just delete the melody and turn it into a low-end song lol
I think when you got simple sample you have more room for Complex drumz, and when you got complex sample, i mean alot complex rythm, counter points you need simple drumz. Thougts?
There should be a pt. 2 where the drums get made first to see if it's just the producer expertise level or really a drums vs melody debate
this !!!
+1
and they should just make a straight up beat & not think about any artists/rappers to jump on it.
Yeppp
Thanks for the opportunity Simon for having me in this video!
MY BRO U ARE FIRE WITH THOSE MELODIES🔥🔥🔥
Bro your an amazing producer
Its important to remember that these are all trap beats. This is such a small area of music. Would be amazing to see this done with other genres. There's potential for a whole series!
Agree. Would love to see more of this, and I personally would like to see some EDM in the future
Drum and bass: which is more important, drum or bass? 😂

I second what this guy said.
You can fix bad drums but a bad melody is just ... BAD

I think it was purposely done that way, knowing that you can still make adjustments to your taste… even on Type beats here on UA-cam, the HiHat is always loud with clipping 808s
idk this was obviously trying to give the melody the spotlight. Laos it was lofi esc so im glad it was more quiet.

I couldn't agree more with this
Yooooo thank you Simon for having me on this! Both beats turned out super dope🔥🔥 lmk when our drake placement hits🤝🤝🤝
Who misses the days when simon used to drop the road to a placement videos🙋🏽♂️
That second beat was insane
Second beat super dope. Chase that dude
A very great job to all producers in it. Also I got to say this gives me more ideas on how to make my song that I want to make. Thanks guys.
i love this guy , super talented and i have his first course ever pro level beats !! was soo good !!! great producer info found here!
Loved this experiment. The important of the two components don't really differ, since they are both required to make a complete beat composition but drums are just something that I think the average listener picks out as listening markers. The thing that stitches your melody to the template.
ooo simone musica be dropping more vids 👀
I love these kinds of videos
Production quality has improved like crazy man 🔥🔥🔥. Always hyped when Simon drops a new video keep up the awesome work and constant improvement!!
The one on the toilet was insane 💀
gyatt
Tbh this video totally changed my mind on the importance of drums. I always thought the melody was the key but I’m realizing the drums can really make or break a song!
Other challenge 3 vs 3 - 2:30 min the song.
Beatmaker, Artist, Production Director.
1 Sound to the same teams.
2/4 words to the both teams.
Honestly I liked both equally. They're both very listenable. I loved this experiment
I was absolutely expecting beat 2 to win
Super dope videos Simon I personally suck at melodies so this video was like uplifting for me
Now Breakdown like that and 7minute drill!!!! Thats fayuuuuh 🔥🔥💯
Can we talk about how Kendel Bell’s FL studio color scheme is as fire 🔥 as her drum beat??? 5:21
wow the editing for this video is amazing
Nah that 2nd beat was crazy
Yo simon keep experimenting with topics like these love your work from day one love you always ❤
Simon, lemmie make da drums next time 😂
Hey thanks for including my comment i love your videos
ooohhh I love the color grading on this one ♥
I recently thought about this, pretty interesting video simon. Both are super strong and lead the song, having a good melody elevates a song to another level, but so do the drums.
Great video concept
Looool!! I really loved the second beat 😅 , was sure it was gonna win 😂
Yh sure we would love to see another video ❤
0:40 But it’s actually the reverse when you talk about a producer like Decap. With him, it’s like melodies are just melodies…the DRUMS are what really distinguishes his tracks. 🔥🤷🏽♂️
1:33 the background beat bro 🔥🔥
Beat 2 is so fuego
but the truth is Both won't help you if your structure not good like my beats
I want to be on the part 2 praying rn!!!
simon i love the vids man ive been watching for 2 years and u inspired me to start making beats
Simon, I hope you see this. So In my opinion, both are important for their own reasons. The drums are like the nervous system and the melody is the skeletal system. The drums add to the song and make it sound better but the melody is the base for the song
Definitely melodies over drums.
2nd one go crazy
I love your ideas
Drums = heart
Melody = soul
Hooolyyyyy, mad editing, mad video quality bro
melody's makes beats sound more impressive to melodic artist but drums are for the chanters and rappers
Both are important, its like bread, Peanut butter and jelly.
Bread is the vocal
Pj is the melody
Jelly is the drums
Individually all can be eaten and sufficient. You can have all three at the same time and have the best blend
Id be curious to see how this would pan out with EDM producers
My take on Drums vs Melody:
I rarely, if ever, make the staaaank face to just a melody.... BUT when you gimmie some crazy HARD hitting drums that STAAAANK face might be coming out!
Thinking about being here since he was in his basement making Kerosene is crazy to me. Thanks to all these great tutorials simon
how does one become a contestant? i've been making music for over 10 years and would love the opportunity to compete on one of these
melody on top
I think it depends on the genre, usually.
Wait, he just said that, nvrmnd. 😂
We got Simon shitting on the toilet before gta 6 0:48
Thanks for the great informations
not him on the toilet 😂
This was cool.🙏
I needed this
free feet is crazy

"i doesn't want to over do it"
proceeds to put the hardest drums
Simon is the guy 👌🏾🔥
Das me in the intro less gooooooo
I can hear Bryson tiller on Simon’s loop 🔥
Gg Simon! Could you do the same beggining with the drums, then set the melody ? I would be interesting to compare and we could have a real answer haha
Spoiler alert : no real answer for the question haha
I feel the main thing that differentiates a new producer to a seasoned one is the melody i started out just laying drums over loops because it was much easier
So i would choose melody is slightly more important
Music is rhythm (drums) and feelings (melody)

I can answer this mystery by naming one song: In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins
Each can exist well on their own, but together they sound a lot better😁👍.
Yooooooooo
🔥 🔥
Nice bro 💥

SIMON, update on placement series?
As someone who makes beats. My strength is melody but Drums always kill my beats cause I suck at drums despite practicing them for eons now.
It's obviously drums. Grindin' by Clipse, The Motto by Drake. Both were hits without a melody. Now name a Hip Hop hit without drums, I'll wait.
pop off simon
for me tha answer is ovbiuos, i often listen to music without drums so... (i like the points metioned in this video tho)
Nah, it's the 808
Before i watch this my answer is "Melody", now let me watch🙂
Hey maybe it's the bass, the bass is fondamental to your beats as it's actively being both a good rythmic and melodic element to your track. But anyway honestly yeah the answer is that both melody and drums are equally important.
IMO it depends on the genre. You can't have weak drums in trap or drill, but you can in pop and R&B. Just different requirements for each
Well, melody without rythm is just bunch of notes, rythm without melody is just banging.
depends on the genre, but for most genres the melody is more important, for example jazz and classical doesnt need, and most of the time, doesnt have drums, but breakcore or any extentions of it (drum and bass etc).most rock, metal, grunge, punk, and most of that kind of similliar stuff is mostly melody, ambient aswell hiphop probably not but stuff like ambient pop and most genres melody is more important
😂 “Drums will arguably always sound like drums…..”Drums do be sounding like drums”. Hilarious!!!!! 😂
8:52 im almost sure he means reese from the reese bass that you can find in almost any daw
i just felt like the first beat was expert melody + expert drums lol
i thought this was gonna be more like, bad melody and good drums vs good melody and bad drums, but not really, both were good beats, it all came down to personal preference really
sad, that such a high effort video isnt performing :(
LETS GOOOO
You’re telling me chase is a beginner??? Dude had those drums smacking like he’s been doing this since diapers🔥🔥
Nice 👍
Simon where can we get that sample you made in this video!?
Does 808 count towards melody or drums 🤔
i feel like it's definitely easier for drums to carry a weaker melody, but a weak melody can't carry even the best drums. it ends up being better to just delete the melody and turn it into a low-end song lol
A vocal is the lead melody and more important until a drum or lead solo..
Hey I’m in there
Watching from indonesia❤
Nahhh he kickin his legs 😭😭
The answer is obviously rhythm, bass gang rise up 😎
I think when you got simple sample you have more room for Complex drumz, and when you got complex sample, i mean alot complex rythm, counter points you need simple drumz.
Thougts?
🔥🔥
