I first discovered your channel with the Yosemite by rail and bus journey. I love that your videos are ultimately meant to see if public transportation can be exclusively used to achieve a tourism experience. As Barney Stinson would have said: “Challenge Accepted!!!”
As a Maui resident, Im so glad you actually made a video on our public transit. For an entire decade, the Maui Bus has been my go to as its amazing alternative to having a car (its less expensive as well). Sure, its not as frequent as a city transport, but for being in the 2nd most popular island in the chain, it isn't that bad.
Yay !! Another Adam video 😊 I’ve never been to the islands but this video has made me intrigued 🧐 Growing up and living in Ireland for 30 years has given me a unique perspective on public transportation. I only owned a car for the last 3 years I lived there. Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ) was the state owned and operated bus and rail company. What ever else you could say about Dublin, the buses made living there possible. And there was no social stigma associated with using public transportation, that like a lot of cities in Europe is just how people get places. Another awesome video ❤😊
A fellow Irishman here. I’ve been lucky enough to visit two of the Hawaiian islands. I’m pretty well traveled globally and can confirm Adam is right. Hawaii is gorgeous. I tried to go again over Christmas but it didn’t work out. I will be back. I want to see as many of the islands as I can.
Loving to see all this new content from you! I love your Bay Area guides as a resident myself, but this is a great way to change it up. Keep up the good work!
Really neat! Spent a week on Maui back in 2023 and idly wondered while I was there if I could save the headache of driving and just bus around. Tourist trips that don't involve hauling your own beach chairs seem pretty viable (and potentially even with small enough backpack chairs). Great topic, well shot, good pacing. Delighted I discovered your work via UA-cam realizing how much I'd like your Yosemite video.
I was staying at Papakea a few miles north of Lahaina during the fire. In the morning, before the fire, we drove south to try to get to the Road to Hana and were stopped by emergency personnel and saw the downed power lines. We went north around the whole island to tour for the day, and when we tried to take 380 back, the traffic stretched all the way across the island. It seemed like everyone knew about the fires before Maui. We never saw the leeward side again. It's such a horrific tragedy, and I hope for the best for Lahaina and Hawaii.
@AdamDoesNotExist The community action in crisis in the days after the fire was strong, yet at the same time, local sentiment about powers that be redeveloping in any way that would be beneficial to the community was already pessimistic.
Hey! Love the video. Glad you got to experience the public transit system here lol. I've been relying on maui's public transportation for the last couple of months and while not the most efficient, it will get you from one town to another. A car is definitely recommended, especially if you plan on checking out cool hikes, trails, and beaches!
nice. I randomly ran across this video. I have lived in Honolulu since 2005 and never thought about doing this or if it were possible. Just didn't cross my mind. I used to work for a Honolulu estate planning firm where I had to go to Kihei, or Lahaina or Wailuku for the day to set up. Just for one day and I would ride with a co worker. Never realized that cute little town of Paia existed. You've inspired me to fly over in the morning and do this for the day. Mahalo!
you should try the big island (Hawai'i), Kaua'i, and O'ahu next in that order I think you should do O'ahu last as it is the island with the best public transportation system
What a great video! As someone who doesn't drive it's great to see someone covering public transit on small islands like this. Do puerto rico some time if you can!!
I did this on the big island before. Just a day around the Island on the bus... However, the best part was the other days I could use public transit to get to some amazing parts of the island for day trips!
Love Maui, my wife and I got married there in Makena. Always felt a deep and special connection to the island, glad to see you were able to make it out and experience it for yourself.
@@AdamDoesNotExist awesome! If you find yourself hungry in Lahaina, I highly suggest Star Noodle - it’s where we had our rehearsal dinner, and it was right along the fire line in old Lahaina. Great food and they could probably use the patronage.
Congratulations on the new subscribers. The last video was a huge success! If the quality of the videos stays up and the algorithm god is favourable, it could soon be 100k.
I just moved to O'ahu from SF, and the temperature change was insane! After a few months, I'm used to it. Like, I get cold when it's 75 degrees. Shivers. Love the vids, man! Aloha.
When I visit Oahu for vacation, I always take the public transport if I can. With some planning, it can be more convenient since there’s no hassle of renting a car or waiting for a pricy Uber
I lived in Honolulu, Hawaii during the 80's and 90' and rode The Bus a lot. Back then you could go all over the island for 50 cents, I loved it. The Maui Bus sounds wonderful too.
My son LOVES public transportation. We are in the East Bay and take it all the time for fun. He would love to take the bus in Maui - I’d rather hang out at the beach 😂
Adam I’ve been watching your videos for a little bit now and I’m from Kauai. Public transit could solve lots of issues here just like It could everywhere else. But the rail going over budget and a variety of bad transit lines have left a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths. Hopefully this will change in the near future and all the islands will be traversable by public transit.
It feels like just about every area has a transit nightmare to tell. I love taking trains, but the nice thing about the bus is that you don't have to build a whole bunch of infrastructure. You can kind of just start running busses. I haven't been to Kauai yes, but it sure is on the bucket list!
A bit more of why love your videos, the narration, the shots and the way you speak to the camera feels so great! Good music and always fun missions to watch. Love it all! If anything, I would love you to explore Texas on public transit and say how horrible it is out there (Maybe start with Austin/Houston) Go to six st in Austin or maybe cross the border onto Piedras Negras, will be happy to recommend a ton of things.
Well thank you! This is really kind. I used to go to Houston all the time for work and remember seeing in the news as headline stories that the bus system is terrible.
When I went to Maui in 2018, I took the bus and walked most places (I don’t drive). It works for some things, definitely not all. It is a good way to meet locals and see the island.
Cool video Adam. I visited Maui in 1994 when my friend got married and I was his best man, it was the first time I tried Royal Kona Coffee at the hotel he was in, it is the best tasting coffee I have ever had so far, but pricey.
I’m an LFC fan as well. We used to look a lot more similar like 10 years ago. I’ve been stopped in the street to take a picture even though people know I’m not Mo!
my best guess is seeing how the mall is basically the start and stop point, most locals probably work in or around there kind of like a Mauii "downtown" so it's probably very convenient going only one bus route only but not so great for running through the whole island and needing to go back to the mall just to transfer to another bus
Yes another Awesome Adam Adventure!😀👍💯 It would be cool if you did something similar but in Honolulu with *The Bus* and the Honolulu Skyline which is their automated Metro😀👍💯
Oahu would be an interesting one. We have a weird relationship with public transit here. Everybody hates it and loves it at the same time and despite all the criticism it has really high ridership.
Recent subscriber. Love the vibe of the videos. I like the side quest/achievement/ challenge theme of the channel haha to more adventures! Also what kind of camera do you use to record?
I was expecting an Oahu video where I rode a more extensive bus system for my stay. Maui service and routes were not for my tourist goals, as you referenced repeatedly. Goes to show that I believe many US transport systems would benefit from more frequent service! I hate having to be controlled by an hourly schedule 😅
Maui sure is different since last time I was there in 1996. Was still like the "hidden gem" and I had to talk people into going there instead of Oahu. Now it's the main attraction.
Excellent! I'm about to do New Zealand's North and South Islands without cars (on only scenic trains and bus routes). There's not enough people talking about how that's possible to do!
Oh, I’m still laughing at “the speed bumps”. Yes, something like that is “so local” with what makes Hawaii, Hawaii. I love your videos, so please keep them coming, but I must also say, we’d never make good travel partners - you’re wanting to be everywhere at the last moment is a complete opposite of my style needed to keep my anxiety level down. 😊 Thanks again for your channel!
@ I’m sure they are. I lived on Oahu for two stints totaling 12 years, and Maui was my favorite “long weekend island” that I’ve been to more times than I could count. I generally rented a car, but a handful of times rode in a shuttle bus of various sorts, and yes, the locals can get “talking story” or just be on their merry way, while taking some of those bumps or curves a little more aggressively for rear-end passengers than they likely imagine - making it a much more memorable experience as you take in what I still call “paradise” with such beauty and wonderful people along the way. Be glad you didn’t take a bus or shuttle to Hana - too many sharp curves and if you have any tendency for motion sickness, well, you know… BTW, when you return to Hawaii the next time, try pronouncing every vowel when you say a word. It generally gets you closer to the correct pronunciation. E.g. “Paia” is pronounced more like “Pie-eh-ah”. I give you kudos for trying. Having grown up in Southern California where a Spanish twist generally works for words you may be unfamiliar with, it took me awhile to get more accustomed to at least attempt pronunciation of unfamiliar words when I first lived in the islands, where friends or sometimes even a local stranger would politely correct me along the way - sometimes multiple times... ;)
TIL there's a train on Maui. I had thought the -- very nice, very picturesque -- Skyline service in Oahu was the only passenger service on the islands, but I guess I gotta go to Maui now to ride that one too
Island looks lovely. Weather is good all the time-- did you see any bicycles, electric scooters, anything that didn't require a driver's license? It seems like a no-brainer. But maybe the roads are too narrow and dangerous.
Haha. As someone who lives in Maui it was fun to see you visit all the locations I know including Queen Ka'ahumanu Center (The most depressing mall of the Pacific) as well as Pa'ia and Lahaina
Thank you for making the series of taking a public transport to do sightseeing! At school, We are trying to talk about SDGs in every possible way. And I believe you set a very good example by traveling and reaching sustainable development goals.
Taking public transit took forever when I spent a few days there. I wanted to have the local experience so I took the bus everywhere. Got to see the sites and met some locals. As touristy as Hawaii is, buying a ticket was not as accessible as in other cities or countries. Additionally, the bus schedule isn't really frequent, consistent or reliable much like every public transit in the U.S. Having said these, taking public transit is an affordable option to see Hawaii like a local.
on my first vacation to oahu we rented a jeep for about 3 days toured the island and returned the car back to the airport form the airport we took the city bus and got to see the locals and the non touristy side back to waikiki beach i really enjoyed immersing in the real city. spent the rest of the vacation walking to the beach and got a cab back to the airport.
Do you plan on doing Kauai and big island by bus as well? Oahu is super easy and convenient with da bus. I didn't think it is viable to do public transit on any of the outer islands
Adam in a BART hat running around Maui on public transit? As someone who goes to Kihei every year and has had the BART map memorized since I was 5, I feel very seen by this video!
You’re a transit true believer! I was surprised you bussed from Akamai all the way to Paia for the PFM when there’s a (smaller) one right on S Kihei Rd? And while Kaanapali beach is tourist “famous,” Makena is arguably Maui’s best (both Big and Little Beach). Agree that for the price and convenience, Foodland poke (and mochi) is decent. Next time you’re there, check out Cafe des Amis (Paia), Hali’imaile General Store (Makawao), and Coconuts (S Kihei). And Wailuku (Maui Civic Center area, Wailuku Coffee Co, SixtyTwo Marcket) probably has direct bus service from Kihei with the Maui Tropical Planation along the way.

this was awesome ! looks like a fun day when you have no real plans and just wanderlust
Its kinda sad how bad transit is in america
Every hour is insane. In Chico California, we at least have every 30 min, switching to every hour at night
I think every hour is reasonable given the system's design. It absolutely serves it's intended purpose
@@AdamDoesNotExist The network is setup right but it needs to run more frequent. Every 30 mins would make it far more usable for all.
@@gdrriley420 yeah heck, Japan has trains running every 2 min
@@lettuce1626yeah but japan's population density in the cities allows for that, this is an island-wide bus system. not quite a fair comparison

Try this on Oahu! Best bus system in the US.
I used to take the bus from Napili to Lahaina to cash my check. Good times.
Speaking of speed bumps, they even have speed tables over there!
They've really got it all!
I love Makena, Coconuts, and the general store, so I'm sure I'd love the rest of those recommendations!
Still beats walking in the hot sun
