  • In this part 4 segment of carving a black crappie I'll be making the eyes from scratch using wooden dowels, high build epoxy, acrylic paint, pigment powders, and a home made rotisserie.
    This is my first attempt using this technique but was happy with the results. I did inadvertently leave out a couple key steps but it still gives you a good idea of the process.
    I will be doing a more in depth version with more information and better camera angles soon.
    I want to thank my friend Bo Wessman for developing this process and giving me permission to share the technique here on my channel.
    Check out Mr Wessmans UA-cam channel here.

      Thanks, I’m going to do another more detailed video with better camera angles now that I know what to expect and how the epoxy reacts. I think I want to make them to include the sclera also instead of just the iris.

      Thanks, I’m in the process of making a new video on making eyes. I made a couple of mistakes on these and the camera angle was horrible. So I decided to do another one that hopefully will be usable eyes for this new crappie project.

    Great video Danny. A little bit of work, but sure beats the glass eyes.

      Cutting and painting them isn’t too time consuming, it’s the layers of epoxy curing that’s the time hog. This epoxy is slow curing.

    I am blown away. That was awesome. New subscriber here.

    Gonna be following your process.

      Thanks, I’ve watched a few videos on carving fish decoys. But I live in Arkansas not much ice/spear fishing goes on here in the south. Probably a lot of people here that never even heard of fish decoys🤣😂
      I may give one a shot sometime!
      If you have any questions I’ll be happy to answer if I can!

    I'm sure you get this question a lot...how did you start carving and how long after starting did you start carving fish? I just started my carving journey and I'm curious how long it took you to produce decent looking fish.
    Do you have any background in arts like painting? I'm asking because I'm terrible with drawing anything....

    • @Danny_Harris-Arts
      @Danny_Harris-Arts  Рік тому

      Thanks for the questions, I’m 62 and have been drawing and painting (mostly wildlife) since I was old enough to hold a pencil or paint brush. (Check out my digital painting playlist)
      I started carving about 3 years ago when I decided to try carving a Harry Potter type wand for my daughter who’s a huge Harry Potter fan. She loved it so I carved 2 more. Then I played around with doing a couple tree spirits. Since I love wildlife and hunting and fishing I decided to try a fish. My first fish was a crappie and I was hooked!!! So I’m still a newbie and still learning. Ive done 9 fish and working on my 10th now. I did manage to win a first and second place and best of show in the novice division for a largemouth and a crappie last year at the World Taxidermy and Fish Carving Championship and plan on entering the next on one in 2024.
      I’ve also carved a pintail duck and a white tailed deer. Probably gonna do a wood duck this fall.
      Every fish I’ve carved with the exception of the first crappie is here on the channel.
      There is a slide show that plays as my header shows a few steps of the first crappie.
      I started the channel to document my growth and it kinda evolved as a how to for beginners by a beginner. I usually don’t have much problem painting them but it is different from a 2D painting so I’ve had to work through a few new techniques. I always learn a little more with each project.
      I’ll be happy to help if I can with any questions or problems you may have. They may not be the ideal solution but I can at least tell you how I handled any number of problems you’ll likely run across.

      @@Danny_Harris-Arts Appreciate the detailed response. That actually explains a lot. I was wondering how your carvings look so realistic after only making a few of them but I assume having a background in drawing/painting helps a lot.
      I wanna get started with my first fish soon, but I honestly don't expect a lot from it. I will definitely follow your videos though. Your work is greatly appreciated!

      @@PatrickBrianneGrobauer get lots of reference photos for the fish you plan to carve. One of the biggest mistakes I made starting out (and still do) is not paying attention to the tiny details. Every detail you include adds to the quality of the piece. I went from carving a fish in 40 hours to taking as much as 200+ hours to finish a piece. Good luck with it. If you do FB follow me on my FB carving page it’s called Wild Impressions Wood Carving by Danny Harris and send me pics of your progress

    Hi Danny. Jan here. What a great technique!! Thanks for sharing. A question...Do you have a good source for Tupelo lately? Most of my carvings are small reef fish or miniature in size. I've used up my old supply of wood and I'm looking for a reliable source of good tupelo, bigger than what's available at say "Woodcraft" etc.. Any suggestions? Thanks

    What did you make your rotate machine out of

    • @Danny_Harris-Arts
      @Danny_Harris-Arts  2 місяці тому

      It’s an old BBQ rotisserie. It has a shaft with a square hole that the shaft that holds the food goes in. It was the perfect size of a 3/8ths bolt. I cut the bolt head off and was going to epoxy it in the hole but it was a tight enough fit that it wasn’t coming out. You may also find a rotary motor people use for rod building and wrapping guides
