Came back into my recommended videos now in 2022 and I just can't believe the audio difference between the older videos and the newest videos, thanks for such a meaningful upgrade!
I watched the video where you restored the old axe. The Nicholson files. I recognized the box and went to my shop and found a similar one, 1930's or so, which I inherited. They were in my dad's workshop when I was a kid, and when he passed, my brother and I divied up the tools from generations going back to the 1850s.
Here is the link to purchase the correct Marbles axe www.smkw.com/webapp/eCommerce/products/Marble&%23146;s+Outdoors/Marble%27s%C2%AE+Camp+Axe/MA701SB.html
fishfind3000 The axe in the advert of the link looks like a hand forged axe head. The axe head in this video looks like cheap cast iron with no forging marks.
There is a smaller Marbles hatchet also forged in El Salvador with an American hickory handle at the same company. Here's the link to that: www.smkw.com/webapp/eCommerce/products/Marble%26%23146%3Bs+Outdoors/Marble%27s%C2%AE+Single+Bit+Hatchet/MA700SB.html
My little Marbles axe came in the mail today, I am VERY happy with it. Took it right out of the box and was trimming some trees around the property. Comes sharp enough to work with but I agree it need the touch of a mill file and a stone. One of the few values for the dollars today. Ya found a winner Cody !
I love your videos. I use to cut timber for Columbia Helicopters Inc., watching your videos makes me miss that work terribly. I typically carried and 5 lbs single bit with a 36 in handle for driving 12 in wedges during the falling process and a smaller hatched for tapping in wedges during the bucking process. I have dozens of axes hanging in my barn. My wife laughs at me cause she could always find me in the hand tool isle of any hardware store pouring over the axes. Occasionally, I go out to the barn and reflect on the job I once had, where these fine hand tool where used an a daily basis. Keep up the great vids. AJ
The Snow and Neeley I have was new in 1973 and it is hands down the best cruising axe ever! It is 40 years old and on its third handle. I use it for everything including felling small trees.
Just bought one on Amazon, its on the way. The price on Marble's website is now ~$25. Amazon is around $36, which is actually cheaper if you have Amazon Prime since shipping one from Marble (for me at least) was an additional $15. So its really $36-40 online. Maybe you can find em in a store somewhere for cheaper. Great review, I look forward to chopping up some Aspen here in CO!
Just got it, grain orientation is basically perpendicular to the axe head. I know not ideal, but have you ever had a small axe fail due to poor grain orientation? (in the meantime i'm trying to see what the seller can do).
+Lee Doughty the amazon supplier offered to refund the purchase if i sent it back. at the time there were no replacements to be had, so i just kept it. i ended up getting a Gransfors-Bruk Small Forest Axe for my bday, so I tend to just use that. I think it (the Marbles) will hold up just fine for light camp work and for moderate wood splitting with a baton.
Got mine yesterday. $26 now from Smokey Mountain Knife, but is well worth it. Came just as Cody got his. Putting a proper edge on it this weekend. Thanks again Cody for the recommendation. Glad to let you know Marbles is still doing good work.
Thank you so much for testing this for everyone, I've been wanting one of these for a year or so but I figured it was to good to be true so I didn't get one, but now I will!
marble ax company has been in operation since the 1800's they have a variety of designs and even make knives these axes are classic and made right here in the great ol' Upper Peninsula of Michigan thanx for the review these axes are a source of pride here thanx again
Glad to see Marbles is living up to their tradition of quality albeit not handmade in the upper peninsula of Michigan anymore. My father bought me a fine stag handled marbles knife as a gift to mark a special occasion. It is an heirloom I will cherish and pass down.
Assuming this is the 701 SB Camp Axe, I just bought it on Amazon...based on your recommendation...I have great faith in your integrity...Thank you, Sir...
I recently bought one of these Marbles Camp Axe's. It is absolutely everything you said and more. I maybe use an axe a dozen times a year and really wanted a "real" axe that I can carry, use, and someday be proud to pass it down to one of my children. This is it! However, I'll probably be buying all my kids one of these as it is so nice and although I've never used a really good axe, this fits my needs and I love it! I wish it would have come with a sheath... but I'll be investing in one to protect this beauty. Great review! Thank you. God bless.
The Krause, if a comment get enough dislikes they get deleted with a algorithm.... It's a Anti Troll device as such Would you believe that Cody/Wranglerstar even gets death threats? There are some serious bell ends out there in this ever shrinking world sadly enough.
Love this recommended axe. Had purchased a Collins boys axe. Was a great axe. Lent it out to a friend. End result was the handle broke. Wanted to replace the handle, but friend disposed of the whole of it. I purchased the Marbles axe. I’m glad I did. Love it. It is something I and my children can use and enjoy. Thank you for this recommendation.
Hand forged of 1045 carbon steel in El Salvador? This is strictly an educated guess, but I'd bet you that that axe came from Condor Tool & Knife! That's not a bad thing. Condor makes good stuff at a good price. I have one of their Greenland Pattern axes and a couple of their parangs, the Village Parang & the Bushcraft Parang. They're all great tools and very well made! BTW, you had two of my all time favorite axes in this video, the Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe and the Husqvarna Carpenter's Axe! If you had had an S.A. Wetterlings Forester's Fine Axe on that table it would have been a perfect trifecta, all of my favorites in one place!
I bought one of the last american made marbles trailmakers back in 2007 before I knew they were going into recievership and not going to be made in america anymore. I never bought it as a collector and its taken a flogging. Best knife I ever bought.
This axe is simply unavailable online for 19.99. Every shop is "temporarily out of stock." I'm willing to buy one right now for 19.99 and up to 9 dollars shipping, but I just can't find it.
I found one, it was $10 at an antique boutique. Collins small boy's axe. But I might buy one of these as well. Thank you Cody. Your attention to detail, even to "wordsmithing," is appreciated.
Arggh...is it simply not possible anymore to purchase a serviceable axe from a good hardware store anymore? I remember the "boy's" axes my dad got for me and my brothers...we got all kinds of use out of those!
I have had good luck with the boys axe from tractor supply, had it going on 3 years now and just broke the handle by prying. A little filing to reshape the cutting edge and it was good to go
Tried to order this fine tool but all the online stores are out of stock! Also, Cody knows exactly what he wants and expects of a tool, and says the same. BEST review of an axe that i saw yet!
You always seem to use the same songs as me in your videos, must be good taste! Excellent review I think I will be picking up one of these. God bless and happy Fathers Day
I took your advise and just bought the Marbles Camp Axe 15-7/8" Overall with American Hickory Handle and Hand Forged 1045 Carbon Head Model MA701SB from Smoky Mountain Knife Works. With shipping the "out-the-door" price was $25.98. If it's as good a Camp Axe as you say, It will make my day and my G-d awful Harbor Freight Axe will be in the Yard Sale box. Thanks Cody!!! :-)
Just purchased one of these axes (well, the 20 inch Outdoor axe). Have to say, after putting a stone to it and chopping down and cutting up 4 or 5 i'd say 4-5 inch trees out back, its still shaving sharp. Super impressed by this axe. SMKW were even kind enough to acknowledge my request for a dark handle.
I'm just concerned this new "best axe under $20 ever!" Marbles is a rebound relationship. You just broke up with "the worst ever" Bahco. I think we all see you still have an axe to grind with Bahco.
I saw this axe 1 year ago and did not purchase due to price being so cheap. I feel like a real fool that is an excellent hatchet. Thank you for your review and keep sticking it to Bahco until they come clean and resolve the issue.
smkw, just ordered one, door to door 33.00, still excited, great video. Thanks to your videos I have learned a great deal about axes, edges, steels, etc.
There are other sites that list it for around $20 still, they are just out of stock as well. lol KnifeCenter.com has them for about $26 (still not bad) and the page will let you pre-order and says they expect them in December: www.knifecenter.com/item/MR701SB/marbles-camp-axe-american-hickory-handle So not too terrible of a wait and most certainly not a terrible price. lol I think the Amazon seller is probably trying to sell it for too much since apparently they are the only ones with any left. Of course that could be why they have any left. lol
Very nice lines. As you say, the difference between junk and the better is in the small details. Thanks for pointing them out. I live in an area where lost of people consume gear and this equipment arrives in the used markets quickly. Knowing what are good brands of equipment allows me to look for the best when searching the shops. cheers
I got mine from Smoky Mountain Knife Works a few months back, but when I checked today they are also out of stock. They did however have a full size double bit axe for 28.99. Made in El Salvador and hand forged.
Smoky Mountain Knife Works has these and they're having a 20% off on the price. You can also get this model the hunters model with 17" handle or the outdoor axe model with 19" handle.
Cody I think you have lost your Marbles! I sure as hell would rather buy an AMERICAN MADE axe at the same price point than some cheaply made piece of junk made in Asia or south America any day. Baileys out of California (Baileys.com) had the Council Tool Hudson Bay axe with a 26 inch handle 2 weeks ago for 17.95 . It seems as though you prefer to recommend junk or overpriced tools made outside of the U.S. I do not follow this protocol I purchase USA made goods whenever possible, this in return helps our folks and economy to grow. BUY USA MADE!!!
Mr. Wranglerstar I love your videos... Your videos reminds me of Bob Ross his show gave me peace just like your videos teaching give me peace at heart. You and Mrs. Wranglerstar are a couple to watch on this media. .. thank you for your wonderful videos. ..
Made by hand…in El Salvador. They aren't 20 bucks for one reason. The price of the axe IS NOT going up. The VALUE of the American Dollar IS GOING DOWN!!! Keep importing everything, and exporting nothing. Soon your average wage won't be enough to buy a loaf of bread.
The Dollar is very strong currently vis a vis other currencies around the world. The real concern with buying products from El Salvador, or overseas generally are the labor practices that go on. The people who made that Marbles axe probably were paid pennies on the dollar. The expansion of bi lateral and multi lateral free trade agreements are what offshores jobs. And those jobs end up getting held by people who get paid nothing and are often exposed to dangerous workspaces.
Thor214 the value is decreasing as you can tell by the fact that back in the day you could buy a high quality tool for half the price of a shitty tool in today's economy
Just pre ordered mine the price has gone up to $25 since the video but still a great value thanks for all the videos wranglestar your still my favorite channel hope to be able to have a homestead one day that I can pass down to my kids one day (but up in Alaska)
Thanks for perfect hatchet test as usual! My quick steel test for axes is cross chopping of 10 alu cola/beer cans on wooden stump. Worse material causes rolled+dull edge just after that simple trial.
Ordered the double bit on your recommendation Cody. $30 on Amazon. I own a single bit Sager, and I don't expect to overshadow that jewel of a tool but I was duelly impressed with your review and your reviews are as good as gold.....Thanks Cody!
Good to see value can still be found at an affordable price. Looks like a great small axe/hatchet for use when the good stuff wouldn't want to be abused
Couldn't agree more about the lacquer on the handle. My main gripe with it is that it's slippery when it gets wet. Problem especially in snowy conditions in early spring
Just picked up two, one for me and one for my son. I didn't manage the same level of edge as you did, but I did get the edge to a nice sharpness. I did find some small grinding issues between the two, fixed it with a file. These things are fine choppers. My son just got through a six inch limb.
I order a lot of stuff from SMKW and never had a problem, good service and pricing. As far as Marble's products I have few machetes and or theprice they can't be beat.
I bought this axe. it's about $30 now, but it's a goddamn incredible axe. it's comfortable with a fabulous handle, reasonably sharp out of the box, a perfect weight that fits a mountaineering pack, the steel is great and the handle was hung perfectly. this is a perfect axe for a backpacking kit (about 2.5lbs) or in your car or truck for felling or splitting a log across the road just like in this video.
I have been saving for 15 months to buy a GransFors Burks hatchet, to go with my small forest axe, and now this. Financially it's a no brainier However, I'm really sold on G.B. Perhaps I shall think about this one and just wait it out until I hear more. Thanks for great review.
got tired of my wife beating up my plumb BSA hatchet, so i bought her one of these last week. in sharpening it up and putting some BLO on the handle, I liked it so much i bought myself one too.
I have 3 of them, in different handle lengths, all made in El Salvador. They too were listed as being 1045, "high carbon" steel, but those I have are a stainless steel. I wire-brushed the paint/coating off of them so I could do a forced patina & give 'em a more vintage look. However, they absolutely will not take a patina. Not sure exactly what type of steel mine are, but they sharpen well, cut well & hold an edge well. So for their $20-$25 price, I'm happy!
Keep up the great work i enjoy your video's very much. I wish i could have a life like you have with your family. No room for that here in the Netherlands. It would be really nice for my wife ( who loves gardening ) and 3 daughters they would have such a time. Thumbs up!!
I've got a brass Marbles coat compass that my grandfather had pinned to his Filson coat for many Northern Michigan deer seasons. All the other grand kids got the "good stuff". I got the stuff that mattered.
They are BACK! $50 + at Amazon. Around $34 with shipping from SMKW where I got mine. It did not come with a sheath. But not to worry, Wranglerstar has a video for that! Ordered my Chicago screws, now if I can just find some nice old leather…
OMG I have this old pearl grip knife that came with a collectible truck model I got from this old man who went to my fathers coffee shop, it's MARBLES brand, this same exact company, I use it every day because it's the best knife I've ever used, what a coincidence! Never got around to looking up the company, now I don't have to. That is so cool, I love it when whit lines up.
+Baron Ockslite You are right, the older Marbles knives are of the highest quality. That company went out of business in the 70's due to a fire. Their newer products are not near the quality
I'm really impressed Cody. The only problem I'm having is finding a supplier in the uk as I would really like to add 1 to my collection. I really love your channel you and your family are a true inspiration thank you for sharing God bless Steve
It is so good to see that at least one manufacturer can produce a quality hatchet at a good price point. I for one would, and have, paid double this price point for a quality heirloom style tool like this. Lol I'm glad to see that this marbles axe was not the let down that the Bacho child's toy was. Keep up the great reviews Cody. Thankyou.
Webster L. Marble gun sight and tool maker as well as a forest cruiser with the ability to see beyond his time. A well sharpened Axe is one of the best things anyone can gift to a friend or loved one.
nice starter axe...axe i use has a heavy duty hard "plastic"(solid) flourescent yellow handle with a quality axe head. had it for about 6 years and used it a fair bit and it's good to work with as the plastic-whatever material "cushions" the heavy blows to the wood. they must have used a high temp. process to join the axe head to the handle as it seems like it's been welded together
i like how you did that, the proofs in the pudding, we've been down that road before, haven't we, in pops the bahco, that is just classic Cody right there, Cody i like what you do, a wealth of information knowledge and skills, Godspeed to you and your family keep safe.
I have one of the old Marbles safety axes and I am very pleased with it, I did attempt to purchase one of the axes you were so pleased with only to find everyone I checked was out of stock. Today however I used an old axe I have had for some time and don't even remember where I got it. It is a Union Axe made in the USA by Union forge and hoe it preformed very well, just wondering if anyone has ever heard of this company.
i have a marbles knife that was my great grandfathers, probably made in early 1900's, and other than some wear on the leather stacked handle, and a little patina, its practically new, and holds an edge better than most of my other knives. I wouldn't be surprised if it lasts another 50 or more years.
Yea I have been waiting on this axe for months and the good news for me is I live 30 miles from SMKW!! heading tomorrow to pick one up....Hell yea. Oh and love the vid.
I just bought this same axe a week ago, it's still a very nice axe for the money, however, it's a little more than double the price now. I paid $48.00 for mine today. That tells you how the axe market is today.
These have got to be being produced by Condor. Same spec. as their axes, same finish as well. Best move the new Marbles co has made. Thanks for sharing this.
have you looked at the Marbles Safety Axe? Have an opinion? Marbles had been making access and knives forever. they've always been good, if not great. I have four of their knives, folders and fixed blades, and one axe. Love'em all. The most cost effective blades in the world, I think.
My Marbles axe is the No. 9 but with a full polished head. Webster Marbles is an icon of bushcraft. One of my cherished possesions is a Marbles woodcraft knife with a convex grind. Wranglerstar is going in the woods to process heavier timber than my duo is designed for. Well: go light or go long? Or base camp and have more efficient tools and pots and pans? Over my outdoor life, I moved from light and basic to fixed and functional. Meet here on Wranglerstar and share opinions. These UA-cam channels are fun!
I love this ax and yes it's hard to believe it's only $19.99. Very well made and it holds up in real life, you can use this ax for work!! Bottom line its for real!! Im now waiting on my double bit marble ax should be here this week and it's only $19.99 also. If it turns out to be of the same quality i may be looking into this company alot more. Anyway Wranglerstar should be rewarded by this company he did a great job on this video of this ax and the company should thank him PLUS!! God Bless.
Hey Cody, at 10:00 before you corrected yourself, the pronunciation of Bacho was almost perfect. Almost like a "backhoe". I grew up in the town where they originated. Story is that they took two inventions from a local farmer and patented them as their own; the monkey-wrench and the adjustable wrench. I never had any problem with the tools they make in Enköping, Sweden though.
Looks just like a Condor to me. Their overall quality and consistency have improved considerably. Sometimes you get unlucky and get a dud. As always, check your sellers return policy when ordering online.
Came back into my recommended videos now in 2022 and I just can't believe the audio difference between the older videos and the newest videos, thanks for such a meaningful upgrade!

Mabe its because the power of someone with 100k+ subs really does have an impact? Hmmmmm baco, baco, baco. Whats the marketing director thinking now?

Yep Condor makes a lot of stuff for Marbles.
I bought one of the last american made marbles trailmakers back in 2007 before I knew they were going into recievership and not going to be made in america anymore. I never bought it as a collector and its taken a flogging. Best knife I ever bought.
They moved it to a different page, you will have to search the site for it, but it is still there.
nice
Update on mine. I purchased one back in July and I love it. Stays razor sharp and very good weight behind it.

Yeah I bet! I'll be getting two when they have them back in stock. Looks like a good one from what Cody did with it.

Don't know what it is about axe vids, they just so enjoyable.
Unfortunately they aren't $20 any more. Now listed on Amazon for $52. Not exactly an inexpensive axe anymore. Unfortunate.
As of 11/19/2014.
There are other sites that list it for around $20 still, they are just out of stock as well. lol
KnifeCenter.com has them for about $26 (still not bad) and the page will let you pre-order and says they expect them in December: www.knifecenter.com/item/MR701SB/marbles-camp-axe-american-hickory-handle
So not too terrible of a wait and most certainly not a terrible price. lol I think the Amazon seller is probably trying to sell it for too much since apparently they are the only ones with any left. Of course that could be why they have any left. lol
On smokey mountain knife shop, it's 25$
+HBlaxBro the only bad thing is Smokey mountain wants to charge a ton for shipping which makes it not the cheapest anymore...
19.99 from smkw.com the next size up is what i bought. 23 bux
Its 2018 now and these axes are still in the 20 - 25$ range from smkw. So why would anyone pay 50 on amazon...
Very nice lines. As you say, the difference between junk and the better is in the small details. Thanks for pointing them out. I live in an area where lost of people consume gear and this equipment arrives in the used markets quickly. Knowing what are good brands of equipment allows me to look for the best when searching the shops. cheers
1:30 - that's what she said. Bwahaha.
Sold out on SMKW. The power of your channel is clear. Bahco should take note.
Can't really be the best axe under 20 bucks when they arn't available ever.
Dragonfiregum I have heard from hundreds of subscribers who have bought them for $20
wranglerstar Maybe someone can let me know who is also looking if they see it appear for sale again. I've been checking on and off for a bit now.
Dragonfiregum Still unavailable. I try to check once a week or so.
Dragonfiregum They are available now.
3 years later (2018) and i just bought the next size up marbles axe for 22.
I got mine from Smoky Mountain Knife Works a few months back, but when I checked today they are also out of stock. They did however have a full size double bit axe for 28.99. Made in El Salvador and hand forged.
As of right now this axe on Amazon is $35.
I found one for 38 and 39 shipping... Hmmm... Might just get a Gransfors for not much more
Smoky Mountain Knife Works has these and they're having a 20% off on the price. You can also get this model the hunters model with 17" handle or the outdoor axe model with 19" handle.
I like hultafor
i love marbles. the first one i bought their firemans hatchet and now i have this one and many more of their products.
I'll catch sight of bigfoot before I can find this anywhere for $20.
how bout 19.99 www.smkw.com/marbles-camp-axe-american-hickory-handle
Hahaha! I'll take that, thank you
Bought one of these because of this vid 7+ yrs ago and still have it to this day very good axe for the average joe. I’ll probably give to my son
Someone knows his Tolkien I see :)
That's not Tolkien. "All that is gold does not glitter."
You nailed it! I own a half-dozen axe brands. Marbles are very good quality, straight up values!
I bought the marbles double bit hatchet and it is amazing it came sharp enough out of box to carve with!
STILL OUT OF STOCK
killermanSAd :(
Mr. Wranglerstar I love your videos... Your videos reminds me of Bob Ross his show gave me peace just like your videos teaching give me peace at heart. You and Mrs. Wranglerstar are a couple to watch on this media. .. thank you for your wonderful videos. ..
"We have a really well hung head." Oooooo yeah. That's what she said.
Awesome to hear you found a proper ax. That looks like a contender for the new truck axe I have been looking for.
He's a diametrically oppositional government hater, just let him scream himself out in the corner
Baron Ockslite Oh wow, a 10 year high. You people are so fucking dumb. Let me guess, you get your hard facts from newspapers?
+Freeman Longhunter FYI...now $34
+Will yam Dysinger And now $39.95
Good to see value can still be found at an affordable price.
Mine just showed up today. Ran out and started chopping away at firewood. It felt great and was very solid and sharp!
What are some opinions about buying this marbles and throwing in a small forest axe handle in for that perfect length. All for about 60 bucks.
got tired of my wife beating up my plumb BSA hatchet, so i bought her one of these last week. in sharpening it up and putting some BLO on the handle, I liked it so much i bought myself one too.
Dear wrangler star this is an amazing camping axe for Boy Scouts and other camping enthusiasts thank you for this great video
Keep up the great work i enjoy your video's very much. I wish i could have a life like you have with your family. No room for that here in the Netherlands. It would be really nice for my wife ( who loves gardening ) and 3 daughters they would have such a time. Thumbs up!!
Marbles is one of the top bladed tool manufacturers make some of the best wood working tools in the trades
I really love your channel you and your family are a true inspiration thank you for sharing
God bless Steve
It is so good to see that at least one manufacturer can produce a quality hatchet at a good price point. I for one would, and have, paid double this price point for a quality heirloom style tool like this. Lol I'm glad to see that this marbles axe was not the let down that the Bacho child's toy was. Keep up the great reviews Cody. Thankyou.
for a 6 to 8 inch log , it worked very good.
thank you for the tips and example of it's capability's.
I'm very happy now with my purchase. : )
Webster L. Marble gun sight and tool maker as well as a forest cruiser with the ability to see beyond his time. A well sharpened Axe is one of the best things anyone can gift to a friend or loved one.
I bought one for myself and one friend for $ 16 each, The quality is amazing, many thanks for the advice!!
From where?
nice starter axe...axe i use has a heavy duty hard "plastic"(solid) flourescent yellow handle with a quality axe head.
had it for about 6 years and used it a fair bit and it's good to work with as the plastic-whatever material "cushions" the heavy blows to the wood. they must have used a high temp. process to join the axe head to the handle as it seems like it's been welded together
i like how you did that, the proofs in the pudding, we've been down that road before, haven't we, in pops the bahco, that is just classic Cody right there, Cody i like what you do, a wealth of information knowledge and skills, Godspeed to you and your family keep safe.
Thank you for your continued search for quality inexpensive goods. Please continue you reviews in this vein as most of us are also on a tight budget.
I just placed an order for one on SMKW based on your recommendation wranglestar. Thanks for all of your videos and information.
Just ordered the marbles camp axe today! 15.99 at smokey mountain knife works!
have you looked at the Marbles Safety Axe? Have an opinion?
Marbles had been making access and knives forever. they've always been good, if not great. I have four of their knives, folders and fixed blades, and one axe. Love'em all. The most cost effective blades in the world, I think.
Perfect Father's Day gift for myself.
Glad to see some one that still respects marbles, although the older model blades were much better they still make a decent tool for the money.
God Bless.
Just purchased one can't wait to put my touch on it.
The Council Tool Hudson bay 17 inch is great for the price. Its about 30 dollars.Great video too!
