We had a resident tell us they had water coming out from underneath their refrigerator. While this is upsetting... there is no need for panic. If you refrigerator is equipped with an ice maker you will need to first check your supply lines. 9 times out of 10 if you have water running down into your refrigerator it is due to a clogged drain line from the freezer.
This can happen if the cycle has been interrupted due to loss of power at a specified time.... or due to food or particulates being clogged in the hole. In either case, we are here to help solve your watery issues quickly and effectively. Process uses minimal tools and usually can be completed in about 20 minutes.

This was very helpful, my fridge was having problems. Thx 😊
Hey guys, thanks!!! I fixed our leaky fridge yesterday thanks to this video!
I discovered this problem today, watched this video and fixed it myself! I used a hair dryer (carefully) to melt the ice away then used the turkey baster to put hot water in the hole. I had to warm up the bottom of the back panel to get it off, it was frozen to the bottom. The opening had been partially blocked by a piece of a label, probably giving it more opportunity to freeze. A bonus is it's the first time my freezer has been scrubbed out in ages. YAY!
Glad we could help! Thanks for watching our video :)
This video was exactly what I needed thank you!!
Thanks for the vid. I have the same model 2006 manuf date still working great. Ran across this and if it ever happens I know how to fix!
Just asking. As you dont seem to replace any parts, would it not be easier to just unplug the fridge for 24 hours so the ice can melt by itself? Or, as I always defrost by big freezer, put an electric kettle in the freezer part to make steam and try to shut the door as good as you can for a few minutes.
This video is still useful. I have the same freezer and the same water leaking problem into my fridge. Followed your instructions and everything seemed to go just fine. Wouldn't have attempted to dismantle the ice maker and back of freezer without seeing it done first.
Thanks.
Still useful! Most refrigerators are still made the same way. Just have to remember how it comes part and it is pretty simple. Another way to make it drain is just to unplug it or shut it off for a day or 2 but if it has something blocking the line (like a piece of corn or a pea… we have seen) then you will be right back here.
Glad it could help!
I appreciate this video
I couldn't figure out where the water was coming from. Ok tomorrow morning I take the stupid thing apart. It's like 1130 pm My Husband is at work actually so hopefully, it is ok til morning. :) thank you for this video.
This video was a huge help. Thanks !!
Thank you so much!!! Our fridge has been leaking for a while now.
I’m going to fix it tomorrow!!!! Great video.
No problem! Glad we could help.
Thanks 👍
confirmed my suspicion... glad it wasn't an ice maker line. Went ahead and cleaned the coils and flushed the drain line with baking soda, vinegar and hot water...the drain line had scum and had break it up. Flushed with more hot water to clean it out good.b 🙂👍
Thank you! Found a bread clip blocking the drain hole and about 3/4" of ice built up behind the rear partition of the freezer.
Glad it helped
This video is very helpful, thanks.
Thank you so much for this video. I just fixed my mom’s fridge without a hiccup! Very thankful
No problem! We love hearing the success stories :)
Very helpful, those Sky Management brothers really know what they are doing
Thanks dickens
Awesome video guys, I did a work order with the same problem today.
Sweet! Glad we could help!
Thank you so much for the video I was able to fix my leaking water
Awesome quick fix, thank you so much for sharing this video, this is precisely my problem
No problem! Glad we could help :)
Awesome job thank you so much
Thanks guys💪🏿🙏🏿
You are amazing! This worked for lil ole me.
Awesome! Glad we could help :) subscribe for lots more tips! 🤗
Thank you! I’m a lady landlord and these kind of videos have helped so much. Thank you for making them🍀🩷
Does this work for side by side refrigerators also?
Good information, but is there a “cause” for this happening that can be fixed?
Thx much!
Before I have same problem now I fix it thank you?
I suppose if you have the time you could also just unplug the refrigerator if there is nothing in it and let it defrost, then when you plug it back in not turn the cold up to max. I have a double-door refrigerator doing this at an AirBnB for quite some time.
Yeah. Leaving it off with the doors open for a day or so would work. But you would need to store any food elsewhere.
If you do that be sure to leave the doors open. They get real gross in a hurry when they are shut up with the moisture in there.
Thank you for sharing this video how to fix the problem, I will try to do it as your instruction but i don't want to keep the Ice maker bc i don' t use it, is it ok uninstall it? Thank you again!
The blocked drain , helps ice build up in the air vents... Deteriorating the refrigerator capacity ...
At my whirlpool refrigerator, the drain wasn't visible when i removed everything
The freezer usually has a defroster to melt some of the ice and the water drains down onto the hot compressor evaporating the water to the air. Sometimes the ice blocks the drain holes and the water backs onto the floor or inside the fridge.
My fridge is a larder fridge. There is no freezer section but it does leak as you described
Great video. The only thing I noticed is that you either forgot to reattach the grounding clip on the ice maker or you forgot to mention it when reinstalling the ice maker. Also I’m guessing this is a reoccurring problem and will have to be redone many times during the lifecycle of these style of fridges. Do you know why this continually occurs and is there a permanent fix? Is a bottom freezer fridge a better solution then a top freezer fridge?
The top freezers seem to do it more often. But I’ve seen the same problem in a side by side before as well. We have a hundred of these refrigerators and have to defrost 4 or 5 each year. But it doesn’t seem to be the same fridge every time. It just happens randomly sometimes.
It’s possible that how you load the freezer could effect it or perhaps it happens when the door doesn’t get shut right or something.
Sometimes there's a heater/defroster on the evaporator unit that goes bad and needs to be replaced. If you do this repair and it reoccurs, you may want to replace the heater. I know it sounds strange that there would be a heater in a freezer, it's there to keep the evaporator from freezing up.
Thank you
Wow thank u really helpful 🙏🙏
No problem! Glad we could help.
Do you recommend turn off the refrigerator first?
For the ice maker, when I unplugged the socket with the connections. There is one wire that is green and I can’t find where it goes
it is the ground wire. just clips on to the metal.
Just saw this--my question too~the metal on the back panel? Could that be why my ice maker isn't working?@@SkyManagement
Now how do you prevent further clogs?
I don’t have an ice maker but i guess the same concept applies right?
Will unplugging the fridge for few days correct this problem.?
Do you unplug the fridge? Is this the same process for fridges without an ice maker? And where does the water go after it’s made it’s way down the unclogged drain?
There is a pan underneath the fridge where the condensation normally drains. When the line gets frozen it can’t get down there and ends up leaking into the fridge.
It’s the same without an ice maker. That makes it easier since you won’t have to remove it.
You don’t have to unplug the fridge, but you should turn it off. Typically there is a file inside the fridge to turn it off.
But won't it freeze up again?
Thanks.
No problem
How to prevent this from happening too often.
Hey guys. Thanks for the video. I'm pretty sure that's the issue I'm having with my refrigerator. I need to get some pliers, though, cause of the screw type in my fridge. I'm curious though. Could someone with the frozen over drain just unplug the fridge for awhile and let it unfreeze itself out? Thanks again.
Yes. Just turning the fridge off for a day or two will solve the issue too! However, that would mean either throwing away the food in it, or moving it to another refrigerator.
Also, if you turn the fridge off and let it solve itself, be sure to leave the doors open. The fridge will get moldy and gross if it’s shut up.
@@SkyManagement Hey. Thanks for the info. Is is amazingly appreciated. I have one other question I'm hoping I can bother you with. I just got the back wall off. It looks a little different than the one in the video. On both sides, there's not holes, but square areas that I can put my fingers down. And another area in the middle, right before all the way in the back that when I put my finger down it, there's a wheel or something.
There is a hole like the one in the video that's in the middle. A coil line from the condenser (or whatever that metal thing is on the back wall) goes right into it. Do you think that's the drain? Between those two side areas, the whole back area was completely frozen.
Also, does the ice maker have to be plugged back in? Ours doesn't work anyway.
Again, thank you so much for your help and time.
Why did it freeze in the first place?
My fridge is a simple white standard size GE. It does not have an ice maker. At the top there is some kind of motor with a small hole. I find thick green sticky stuff on the bottom, directly below this hole. Evertime I clean it, I find more thr next day. What is this and what can be done about it?
Thanks for the info!
It seems this is a common problem across many mfg. lines and models (freezer top or bottom). It seems they ALL make the condensation drain holes TOO SMALL, so thy all ice up/plug up. Moronic. This has been going on for years.
Agreed. This is definitely a problem common to many models that should be addressed by manufacturers.
Character In the video It's great, I like it a lot $$
Thanks! we are always happy to help :)
So I did exactly as you guys have done in the video, but it still coming out fast underneath the fridge. I’m thinking I might have to unscrew the back panel and see what’s going on underneath. Maybe the drip pan or a tube is cut? Just started happening few days ago.
Did you ever find out what exactly was going on? Maby it was still completely frozen. Asking for a friend haha not really. My parents back fridge has been doing this. I'm positive my dad knows what to do he just got so much other things to do. I still sent him the video. If he doesn't do anything by the weekend. I will do so myself when he goes to work. Just want to make sure I will not have any problems once I do this.
@@SandyReid-ADM So I couldn’t find the problem, but what I did to fix it was just turn off the water to the refrigerator 😳🤣 so I fixed it the easy way, but I can’t use the water filter. I just buy water bottles anyways 😂 If I had to guess, it must be too much water going down into the pan because it shouldn’t overflow that fast to leak onto the floor.
What if the problem happens again a month later after melting the ice?
Is there a more permanent solution?
where exactly does that grounding clip go? I took my ice maker off and cleared out the drain, reinstalled the ice maker and now it's not working and can't remember where the grounding clip goes?
The best way hot water and vaccum the water try several times you should be good , sometimes heat gun damage plastic
I’ve used hot water and a turkey baster. That worked great!
We have a leak that only goes into the fridge (none in the freezer). My freezer has an ice maker but it isn’t plugged in to a water source so we don’t use it and keep the arm up so it doesn’t make a noise. How can it leak if there’s no water hooked up to it? I also don’t have any screws on that back panel so can it not be removed?
it is leaking into the refrigerator due to the freezer not being able to drain during a defrost cycle. If there are no screws, then there has to be clips or something holding on the back panel. Once panel is removed you will see it is frozen up. If you do not wish to take it apart, you can simply unplug the refrigerator and open up the freezer compartment. Let it sit for the weekend and it will thaw naturally and then it will be ready to use again.
@@SkyManagement thanks. We saw in another video to take off something inside the fridge and clean that out and flush a drain through there and that seemed to do the trick. Thank you for responding!
How do you keep this problem from happening in the first place? It seems it will just keep re-occurring once you fix it?
that is what i would like to know as well i have had the freezer over 15 years and about 3 months ago it started doing this when it makes a strange noise then i can see the heating element in the back of the freezer turn red and then it starts leaking down the back wall of the refrigerator and then onto the bottom floor and then on to the floor it shelf
I get new refrigerator with water and icemaker but water line is not connected yet.
Why I have small amount of water on the floor perfectly in the middle between doors and no water inside refrigerator?
If the water line isn't connected, then its condensation from the coils. This is normal, but it is supposed to drain into the pan underneath the refrigerator where is then evaporates back into the air. If the water is showing up on the floor and not inside the refrigerator, then I would guess either the drain line is missing the pan underneath where it is supposed to drain, or the pan is cracked (if it's a new fridge this can happen when they are moving it. the pan is typically plastic). I would check those things first.
Thanks a lot. Have a nice weekend.
I just found mine still leaked after doing all this so I removed the controller box (the big part where the light bulb is in) and found there was ice and food debri clogged in the little drain tube which was causing the water to back up. I cleared it and it stopped the water leaking.
Yes. When defrosting it is important to dump water down the back and make sure it drains down the tube into the pan underneath.
Hmm I am having the same issue. I am gonna try the same thing, and see if I can fix that.
Why is there styrofoam in the cooling system, my freezer has that too ?
So what if I don't have an ice maker, can this still be the issue? I don't haven't noticed it inside it just comes from underneath every few days
Absolutely. This has nothing to do with the ice maker. It has to do with the defrost cycle on your freezer.
@@SkyManagement I pulled everything apart & me nor my daughter could find the drain hole. It has to have one correct? It's just a general upper/lower fridge like this.
do you unplug it first?
Unplugging it is a good idea. You at least need to turn it off (usually a dial inside the fridge) Sometimes the plug is hard to get to. Or you could flip off the breaker to the fridge.
Thanks man! You guys saved me $200 dollars from MR. APPLIANCE!!
What causes the coils to freeze
Drain line gets clogged so ice then backs up and keeps re-freezing over the coils. you must first treat the cause of the draining issue.
@@SkyManagement What is the best temperature to leave the fridge on? Mine is dripping inside and the water is turning into ice on top shelf.
Did you tell us why this fridge made ice and failed to discharge the accumilated water? Is there a nipple in the main fridge responsible for the discharge and it may be plugged and causing the water spill?
The water in this case doesn’t come from the ice maker. It’s condensation build up on the coils. The coils frost over and then the freezer with go through a defrost cycle and the water will drain into a pan located underneath the fridge. If the line that drains the water gets clogged or frozen over (usually the case) then when the defrost cycle runs the water can’t drain down the tube into the pan. So it typically leaks into the fridge and eventually out onto the floor.
Nice video guy’s. Question. If I don’t have a hair dryer, could I just stick a utility light in the freezer for a few hours? You know the kind with a 500 watt halogen lightbulb. Do you think it would get got enough to melt the ice?
We know a thing or two ... because we have seen a thing or two. Seen it... covered it. And no it will melt the entire inside of your freezer like a shrinky dink . Not recommended. But then again you already knew from experience... lol
So no parts necessary to prevent this from happening again??
Random question: With refrigerators like this, where is the water filter for the ice maker? Does it even have one?
Some higher end ones may have one. But the fridge shown in the video does not have one. None of the freezer on top models that I have at my properties have a filter for the ice.
@@SkyManagement my freezer is on the bottom of this one. It’s definitely not a new new one lol
Do I have to have a mask on during refrigerator repair?
Lmao
and risk the refrigerator getting covid??
Why is a mask on? Smh because someone is recording him maybe
Only if you’re stealing someone’s food from it.
Make sure you don’t catch COVID from the refrigerator, Safety first 😏🤭😂
Did anyone ask or mention why this happens?
Thanks in advance.
we explained it. Thanks in arrears!
Can I just defrost my refrigerator instead of taking it apart
No need to mask up. Can’t get Covid via UA-cam😂
My refrigerator don't have an ice maker
Even without an ice maker. You may still need to manually defrost the freezer if the drain line has gotten frozen.
I have this same fridge. I followed the method yesterday, but now there's no water leaking into the fridge, but there's water everywhere on the floor. Help please lol 😝
When the freezer defrosts it should drain into the pan underneath the fridge. If it was pretty frozen up and all drained out at once. It may have over flowed the pan under there. So I dry it up and give it a little time and see if it continues. If it continues, then it is defrosting properly, but the hose that goes into the pan is missing it, or the pan could be cracked and not holding water.
But I would guess it just over flowed and will probably be fine once it catches back up.
You just let it thaw out for 24 hours and 48 hours meaning the refrigerator?
My one doesn’t have any nuts to unscrew but when pull hard it’s look like it’s stuck with something behind which I can’t see
Can u help how to open it
Could just be frozen together with ice. If you can put your food in a cooler or a neighbors fridge for a day just unplug your fridge and let it sit open. It may be enough for it all to thaw out and release your cover.
Different refrigerators have different ways to hold them in. Sometimes they have clips at the bottom and you can pry them out with a flat head screwdriver. Be careful not to damage your fridge!
@@SkyManagement thanks for ur help I ll unplug it for whole day and today I tried to open looks like it it doesn’t want to open
If that ice buildup is bad enough it can fuse to the back panel. Let it sit for the day and try and take off the panel again to make sure it isn’t clogged in the drain. Should be good then. Sorry you are having issues
That’s a temporary fix .. it will just clog up again . I think it’s freezing because it’s low on Freon
😮
I dont have any frozen ice there :/
Just a question : What if we don't do anything except maybe turning off the switch for the fridge eg. 8 hours.
Do you think it will melt the ice whatever that blocking the pipe?
I don't have any knowledge regarding electrical stuff, however i am currently cash tight due to the current pandemic,so it not a time for me to call a professional.
So even if say i don't even do anything as above, does the fridge will technically go back to normal?
If you have a place to put your food you can shut it off and let it thaw naturally. You only have 2 risks with this. 1. If it is not thawed enough you will be back in this same predicament or 2. If it is something clogging the drain hole (piece of corn… pea… etc) then you won’t know.
Sometimes you can see the drain pan underneath (either in the front or back) if you left it off and open for 8 hours check the pan… if it is full of water you are good to go. If it is still dry then you have not waited long enough
@@SkyManagement thanks for the helpful tips.
Misleading from photo
Alcoholics in the house for sure.
bahhhahaha... well.. we just fixe em
It is a freezer not a fridge
Lmao this was such a wild time. When you thought that social distancing and masks saved you from Covid. Yet you’re performing maintenance in a customers house and doing your intro in their living room maskless😂😂😂😂😂
20 minutes ? You got lucky, most take longer. While you were there why not clean the coils and all the dust by the drain pan and compressor. Oh and that ice maker has 3 screws you missed the bottom one.
I know this is old but the masks are a little much and if you are going to do a video on this you should say why it happened! And a fix so it doesn't happen again like hooking up the defrost drain heater!
the mask good grief
Mask back on? Distance. ?? Lmfao.
social distancing is a joke..!! you fell for it
Oh my Gawdz, Really!! 😂😂😂
Screw C.O.V.ID !! Quit selling the agenda!!
Well… to be fair.. it was filmed during. Just trying to make the best of the bad situation. Thanks for your support !
That doesnt look easy but ok
Note, don’t forget to put your mask on, while watching this video.
After hearing the social distancing part I just ended the video immediately
Unfortunately, that video was filmed in the hight of the covid days. So glad that the world is putting that behind us now.
You h you think the world is over that? Just wait till the next pandemic begins and I will say this…stay away from the Rivax vaccine in the coming future
Beyond a piss poor design...
Masks lol
Yeah. It was an interesting time. Lol
He is mumbling with the mask on. Can't understand most of what he is saying.
I'm sure it's a helpful video but it's hard to take these guys seriously.
Grown men scared to take a breath.
This video was made during the peak of covid. We weren’t really concerned about it. But it was our policy to wear masks whenever we entered someone else’s home. It was the polite thing to do. And yes, of course they gave us permission to film the video.
masked 👎😷🤣👎
Unfortunately, this was filmed in the hight of the covid days. So glad that we have now moved past that.
