When this came out, you were hearing one liners from it everywhere. "Yeah, baby, Yeah!!" & "Groovy Baby" especially. Some of my friends from the era will still address me as Mr. Powers, using the Dr. Evil voice. Powers was a Great last name to have while these movies were big.
Wow. Just wow. This video shows one of the greatest comedies going right over two peoples heads. They literally barely laughed/sat stone faced at the countless genius jokes throughout the whole movie, and instead only laughed at the "funny walk the man did/funny voices the man did". It was like watching two kittens listening to Mozart doing nothing but tilting their heads occasionally at the sound coming from the speakers....
....awkward!
Fun fact: the Dr Evil character is just Mike Myers doing an impression of Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels.
The guy who throws shoes is based on a James Bond Villain called "Oddjob" he is famous for having hidden blades in the rim of his hat and throwing it like a frisbee

Much of the Swinging London sequences are fashioned after a number of popular films from the 1960s, many of them British. In addition to the Bond films, the Austin Powers character is based on a trio of British spy films starring Michael Caine, as well as a couple of American spy films starring James Coburn. British television shows such as The Avengers (not related to the Marvel characters), The Prisoner, and American shows like The Man from U.N.C.L.E. were also influences.
Also, the theme music played over the opening credits is “Soul Bossa Nova” by Quincy Jones.
I wouldn't say the prisoner so much, but would also throw in the saint, and Danger man (secret agent man in the states). Especially since the song secret agent man plays in the shoot out scene in the lair.
Rip David McCallum who was a man from uncle and ducky in ncis who died at the age of 90 yesterday.
Plus the sexy female spy sidekick comes from TV shows like Get Smart, aka cold war spy movies & tv shows were very big in the 1960s. Even Dean Martin made a few(one with Sharon Tate, before she was murdered)
The line "It's my happening, baby, and it freaks me out!" is from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, a 1970 swingin' 60s romp written by famous movie critic Roger Ebert.
Don't forget Dean Martin in the four Matt Helm films. His cover was being a fashion photographer and his famous circular bed.
Jay & Amber the actor who played the son of Dr Evil is Seth Green.
He's been the voice of Chris Griffin of " Family Guy" since 1999.
He also co- created the Adult Swim series "Robot Chicken".
The transitions with the band are an homage to a TV series called Laugh In. They had many of these transitions per episode. This was the TV series that launched Goldie Hawn‘s career.
So much of the 60s is referenced in this movie, I absolutely love it lol.
The black cat suit that Mrs. Kensington wore in the beginning, and that her daughter wore later on, is also an homage to a character named Mrs. Peel from the British TV series,The Avengers. That series was a completely unique spy series. With absolutely wild storylines.
Mike Myers was also paying tribute to the Our Man Flint spy, movie series, as well as Matt Helm movie series, which was comedy, spy, movie.

Really should have watched a few James Bond movies before Austin Powers. They don't have a frame of reference for most of the jokes.
God, people love to complain....literally the first comment and it's basically _"YOU'RE NOT WATCHING MOVIES THE WAY I THINK YOU SHOULD!!!!!!"_
There really isn't that much comedy in this film that can't be understood or appreciated if you haven't seen James Bond. Sure, it clues you into a lot of the overall satire but imo that's not even the most important or enjoyable aspect of the film. Most of it can be appreciated without outside context.
I mean, you're acting like they just sat there confused the whole time, but they were literally smiling and laughing through most of it. Why isn't that enough? It's okay if every viewing experience they have isn't completely 100% optimal and to your standards. The fact that you even say *"They* don't have" (talking _ABOUT_ them) rather than *"You* don't have" (talking _TO_ them) makes it seem less like you wanted to personally let them know how they could have improved their experience of the film, and more like you're just wanting to just let everyone know that you would have enjoyed this more had they done things your way.

I remember when word got around back in the 90's about this movie. Everyone rented this from Blockbuster. It was never promoted or placed in theaters. But it was the most rented video that year (the wait was soo annoying) but when it was available we were in tears😂 school was a mess with various quotes 🥰🥰thanks for the memories
It was in theaters, but it wasn’t a huge success. It was much more popular on home video.
Mike Myers (not Michael... that's a fictional murderer) is a lot more than just The Cat in the Hat. He was a very popular SNL cast member in the late 80's/early 90's, where he created a little skit called Wayne's World (playing Wayne). They made a movie out of it that was a surprise hit (also a good reaction idea), spawning a sequel and launching Myers' successful film career. He made another Wayne's World, 3 Austin Powers flicks, AND... voiced Shrek in countless films and shorts. He has also done a few well-received dramatic turns. Not sure if you noticed, but he played BOTH Austin and Dr. Evil.

Fun Fact: Mike Myers was inspired to write this movie after his father passed away. He had a lot of fond memories of watching '60s British spy movies with his dad as a kid, so he wrote this spoof as a tribute to the movies his dad loved so much.
Also, they don't make comedies like this anymore, I really miss those years when everyone were allowed to make movies like this without anyone getting offended.
People have always been offended, social media allows people to announce it easier is all. This notion that before 10 years ago anything was acceptable and funny but now "cancel culture ruins everything" is completely inaccurate.

The sequel ("The Spy Who Shagged Me") came out a few years later and was a play on the Bond film, "The Spy Who Loved Me." The Austin Powers title caused controversy in England since "shagging" over there is the equivalent of the F-word.
I'd never heard that word before the Austin Powers movies came out, so I was very surprised when I learned it was their f-bomb. Lol
When you watch the James Bond Movie Dr. No. many of these references will make sense Like the Bubble suit Dr. Evil wears. One of Mike Myers first movies was "So I married an Ax murderer" where he played multiple roles also. He is a very talented, and Funny Actor. Thanks for the Smiles

Yeah the guys need to check out some early James Bond movies to get the spy cliches being ripped off for laughs like Dr Evil’s look (You Only Live Twice) the girls innuendo filled names (Pussy Galore - Goldfinger, Xenia Onatop - Goldeneye), the henchmen etc etc. Also draws on another 60s spy film series “In like Flint” and “Our man Flint” which was equally cheesy (but didn’t mean to be funny…!).
For the voice of Dr. Evil, Mike Myers is doing a pretty strong impression of his old boss at Saturday Night Live, Lorne Michaels. Myers doesn't really think Lorne is evil, but Lorne is Definitely in charge at SNL, and his "big boss" energy is HUGE, which makes him a perfect template for a comedic autocrat like Dr. Evil.
And Lorne absolutely revels in it.

As someone else mentioned, the transitions pay homage to the show Laugh In. Elsewhere throughout the movie, Mike Myers did a great job at basically mocking the spy movies and shows of the era, James Bond being one of those, and especially those where the bad guys say they were going kill somebody and gave the opposing characters every chance to survive. The scene with the sharks is a great example.
It’s probably challenging to understand the brilliance of all the references had you not lived in the era. Born in 1965, it was a hilarious throwback. 😁
Those brief interludes also a bit reminiscent of Lancelot Link; Secret Chimp saturday morning TV show - but agree with the Laugh-In homage.
Born in 68, so got all the 60s and 70s references. I mean some of it was before my time, but there'd be reruns and references to those things, especially with slightly older siblings. The idea that most people think it is ONLY a direct parody of Bond is misleading to them. The general theme is, but Austin himself is more compared to other spies of the time.

Mike Myers has this... obsession... with Scotland. Not even a terribly accurate one, but he's fun. There are people with Scottish accents in Axe Murderer, he gave Shrek a Scottish accent too (there was no reason for it... that's just what he did), and then he did this skit for SNL about a Scottish guy in America running a Scottish gift shop that never actually made it onto the show. You can see it on UA-cam though.

I don't know what possessed Mike Myers to give Dr. Evil a son, but that storyline is one of my favorite things about this trilogy. Such a brilliant way to highlight the difference between then and now. =)

I'm convinced all react channels have had horribly boring childhoods. That being said I love you guys. You two have really good and unique takes on movies..... 99% of the time.

The key element to a successful reaction channel is a large library of stuff they haven't seen. I couldn't ever do a reaction channel for many reasons, including my personality, but even if I was charismatic I've seen just about everything. Some people just don't watch a lot of movies or listen to a lot of music outside of a single genre. And whereas growing up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s we didn't have a lot of entertainment options outside of TV, movies, and primitive video games, today's younger people grew up in a world where UA-cam exists.
It's amazing how many will have straight faces during hilarious scenes in so many classic comedies.
Why? Austin Powers is a so-so movie at best. And, they needed to watch a James Bond movie first to get the references.
You wondered about those quick dance/freeze sequences. In the 60's there was a show, "Laugh In" They use to have those dance sequences/freeze. I love Dr. Evil (shssh) In the sequel - "zip it"
My Senior year of high school (1998), the monday after our JROTC Military Ball. We were watching this in JROTC.
The scene where Dr. Evil is trying to do the Macarana, another classmate shouted out, "Hey! It's Brian dancing." I replied, "What are you talking about! I can't dance that good."

The transitions are done in the style of the late 60's TV show called Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. They would do transitions like that with girls in bikinis with writing all over their bodies Goldie Hawn was very famously one of them.

This was a pitch-perfect spoof on 60s European spy movies . I saw this in the theater when it came out, and laughed pretty much the entire time.

The Austin Powers theme song was written and composed by the producer of the highest selling album in music history. The album, Michael Jackson's "Thriller". The producer, Quincy Jones. He recorded "Soul Bossa Nova" in 1960 and 37 years later, more people recognize that tune from Austin Powers.
The song was the theme to Myers’ favourite game show in Canada, Definition. It ran from 1974-1989 and was hosted by Jim Perry (Card Sharks, $ale of the Century).
Watching Amber try to figure out what the "logic" of this movie's absurdist parody of early James Bond films is cracking me up. 😄 Guess you two should watch some early James Bond films about a British secret agent. Those films took themselves more seriously in movies like Dr. No, Goldinger, and You Only Live Twice which Austin Powers does the heaviest borrowing from and they're smashing, baby, yeah!

Austin is mainly a parody of the Bond movies. So, it have so many references to the old Bond movies. Example, the quote "I expect you to die" is from 1964 "Goldfinger". The anti-radioactive suit at the final battle in Dr Evil's lair is from 1962 "Dr. No". The promiscuity, the irresistible sex-appeal, is a well known Bond characteristic. Dr Evil and his cat is a parody of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the chief of the criminal organization Spectre where its members were designated by numbers, hierarchically. Frau Farbissina is a parody of Rosa Klebb from 1963 "From Russia with Love". Number Two was a parody of Emilio Largo from 1965 Bond movie "Thunderball". Basil Exposition is "M" from the Bond series, etc.

There's a lot of 'Bond' references in this, such as Dr Evil's hench man 'Random Task' is based off 'Odd Job' from the Bond film 'Goldfinger' the same is true for, 'Alotta Fagina' in the Bond film there was 'Pussy Galore'. 'Dr Evil' is based off a Bond villain called 'Blofeld' who dresses the same. The next two Austin Powers films are just as good.
Specifically, Dr. Evil is based on the Donald Pleasance version of Blofeld in You Only Live Twice.

Those little musical interludes that you were wondering about are a spoof of the 60's show "Laugh In" Very popular variety/comedy show. That's where Goldie Hawn got her start in showbusiness
I loved how totally lost they were with those interludes! They felt so natural to me when I first watched these movies because lots of shows did transitions that way in the 60s and 70s (popularized / stolen from Laugh In doing it first), but they've clearly never seen anything like it. Lol X)
Fun fact: the chest hair on Austin Powers is parodying, Sean Connery vast chest hair.
Random task throwing the shoe is a parody of Odd Job throwing his hat in James Bond movies. The guy who played him is now serving 34-life in prison.
When Austin Powers breaks through the wall, the song playing is "Secret Agent Man"-a classic 60s song by Johnny Rivers that you definitely need to react to,.
The actor who played Basil (Austin's Boss) is Michael York, a very successful and well known actor. He was in another series of movies that I strongly recommend, "The Three Musketeers" (1973) and "The Four Musketeers: Miladys Revenge" (1974). Awesome period piece films with plenty of humor. Years later there was a third movie in the series, but it did not do as well.

Fun Fact: Austin Powers : International Man of Mystery was not a commercial success. It became a blockbuster when it came out on VHS in Fall of 1997 and word of mouth got around and people started buying the video. The sequel The Spy Who Shagged Me in 1999 waa due to that phenomenon. I went to see it in its original theatrical run in Spring 1997 and I was in there with maybe 20 more people. When the " Who does number 2 work for? " scene happened, I was laughing so hard that I was crying. Lol. " Damn, son,what did you eat!?", lol. Goldmember from 2001 is also hilarious.
If Phantom Menace hadn't come out at the same time, I think the story would be different.
@@GeekyGirl80 Well, that was 1999, the 1st Austin Powers was 1997( saw it in theaters and it was hilarious). The Spy Who Shagged Me was 1999 and it was a huge hit. Look,I'm high AF and know this.
I'm so surprised that my parents let me watch this and the sequel when I was 9. I watched Goldmember when it came out when I was 11.
International Man of Mystery was actually a commercial success in theaters, grossing over $67 million worldwide on a $16.5 million budget, but it was more of a modest success than a mega blockbuster. Then, like you said, the home video sales and rentals, especially being one of the first feature films released on DVD, helped it become a massive cult phenomenon.
There are TONS of references to James Bond films. The Villian's names are all take-offs of the Bond Villans. I HOPE you watch the 2nd one as it includes Mini Me which is so much fun!

FUN FACT: Quency Jones wrote the the song used as the opening theme song to Austin Powers while on vacation in Brazil in 1969. He later gave Ludacris permission to use it for his Austin Powers tribute song "#1 Spot".
Dr.Evil’s jacket was called Nehru popular in 60s and in India. The song in the big fight was Secret Agent Man from 1966 by Johnny Rivers, loved this song as a child.

The dark haired girl in the "transitions" is Susanna Hoffs from the Bangles. Her husband Jay Roach is the director of the movie.
"I expect you to die, Mr. Bond". You have to know about the early evil characters from the 60's Bond movies with Sean Connery, in their Mao style clothes. Then you mix it with the humour of the great Peter Sellers and director Blake Edwards (The Pink Pather movies), spice it with some swinging sixties London into it and have the genious of Mike Myers to create it (Mike Meyers is a huge fan of the late, great Sean Connery. Watch Myers speech at Connery's AFI Life Achievement Awards). I've mentioned before, that you have to see some of the "Pink Panther" movies (the original ones of course), you'll cry from laughter. The two best are: "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" (my favourite) and"Revenge of the Pink Panther". And you must of course see "Goldmember", the second Austin Powers film.
Goldmember is the 3rd one. The Spy Who Shagged Me is second.

Those weird transitions were lampoons of the transitions in the popular 60s comedy/variety show, Rowan & Martin's Laugh In. Goldie Hawn got her start in that show. The blonde girl with the flowers painted on is a send-up of Goldie.
Myers is a comedic genius.
All of these movies are hysterically funny and have
some of the most ingenious word play I've ever heard.
What a groovy reaction!! When this came out for what ever reasons it didnt make a big splash at the box office. It became a sleeper hit over the next two years. Between DVD players becoming available and this movies passionate fan base a perfect storm was brewing for the release of the second film in 1999. It grossed 54 million on its first weekend, which was huge for that time and more than the first movie grossed for its whole run. For the second one ,Madonna has a single on it called Beautiful Stranger, please react to it, I think she won a grammy for it, it s discoish and physcodelic popish. and one of my favorite songs of hers.
The first Austin Powers movie I saw was the 2nd in the trilogy and didn’t know what I was in for going in. Absolutely rediculous and love every second of all three! Can’t wait to watch this reaction! 🤣
Mike Myers was a genius! All the way back to his skits on SNL, to this series, Wayne's world series, and his normal but funny, So I Married an Axe Murderer! Fat Basterd is a one of a kind character! Clearly his spoof on James bond characters, and also a few America spy series, In Like Flynt and Matt Helm!
The best thing about this movie is that it's a parody of old spy movies, but it's so funny that you don't need to have seen those movies to get the jokes. When this movie came out, it was a special treat for those of us who grew up watching 1960's Spy-Fi movies. The early James Bond films (especially Goldfinger) and the James Bond knock offs like Matt Helm & In Like Flint. If y'all ever watch any of those you are going to get so many jokes from Austin Powers all of the sudden.
AndI just gotta say, if you liked this, you should check out another Mike Myers film Wayne's World. It came out before Austin Powers and has a great soundtrack.

Loved your reaction to this. I don't think Amber was enjoying the movie at all in the beginning, but by the end she seemed to accept the fact that it was a spoof, a quirky, ridiculous comedy full of absurd people, situations, and plot. I think the '60s vibe and music helped her get into it a little bit, so I was glad to see it. When you get the chance, please add "Weekend At Bernie's" to your list. Another crazy comedy that I think you'll both like, especially you Jay since you love oddball movies like "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Ace Ventura" (two of my favorites also!).

A lot of the characters in this movie were based on characters from the James Bond movies. For instance, Alotta Fagina was named after a character named Pussy Galore, the guy who throws the shoe was named Random Task after the character Odd Job. This movie is definitely a cult classic. So many one liners!
One of the silliest trilogies of all time and I was here for it my buddies and I seen the last two at the theaters and both had the whole theater crying with laughter.

I had a day off of work the day this came out and decided to see it, but didn't expect much. I libed it so much! After I got home I called my mom at work and told her I was taking her to see Austin Powers after she got off work! She agreed and we both loved this movie! It was so funny!
Doctor Evil was a parody of Blofeld, a James Bond villain played by Donald Pleasance in the movie "You Only Live Twice" (1967). Same grey Nehru jacket, scar, pinky ring, cat stroking, etc.

Yes, I know that the younger generation does not have much of a sense of humor, and don't understand satire and parody that well, but it still blows my mind the extent to which many younger reactors demonstrate that lack of a sense of humor...lol. Btw, I was born in the late 1980s, and had never seen a James Bond movie, when I first saw this movie in the 2000s, but even I was able to discern what the humor was getting at.
The fellow playing the piano on the double-decker bus was Burt Bacharach, a famous songwriter who wrote many hit songs in the 60s and 70s for Dionne Warwick and numerous others.

The transitions between scenes replay on a popular 60s television show called “laugh in”, and which Goldie Hawn became very famous.
If you see any of the Sean Connery, James Bond movies, you’ll get most of the references because us old guys can quote them from the original scripts! You gotta watch the original James Bond’s!😂

Another silly film, a remake but Brendan is just brilliant, will definitely have you both giggling. ;-0 When it first came out, me and a friend saw Austin Powers twice in one night. It had such a huge impact on us, just hysterical and oh so quotable. You are gonna love the 2nd and 3rd.

The Fembots were inspired by a couple of spy spoofs from the '60s: _Some Girls Do,_ in which androids disguised as beautiful women are dispatched to assassinate horndog political figures around the world, and _Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs,_ featuring Vincent Price as a mad scientist. They've been a minor staple ever since; fembots were the best-known enemies of _The Bionic Woman_ and probably inspired both _The Stepford Wives_ and _Westworld,_ as well as a crummy _Terminator_ knockoff called _Eve of Destruction_ with Gregory Hines. (Poor broken Eve has an armed nuclear bomb in her womb.)

I used to know Seth Green (Scott Evil) a bit. When Scoot meets Dr. Evil fir the first time, the Macarena and him lunging at Scott was all adlibbed. At one point Seth looks away almost into camera. He was looking at the director, for suggestions because he had no idea what was happening. The director simply signaled to roll with it. "Get away from me, you lazy eyed psycho!" was his own adlib.
The odd transitions with the band are important, in an inside joke way. When Mike was on SNL, he created a 1960s spoof band with him as lead singer Austin Powers. The original members appear in each film. The female guitarist is Susannah Hoffs of The Bangles. Her husband is the director. The bassist is singer/songwriter Matthew Sweet. "Girlfriend" (1992) is a good song to start with.

Those "Transitions", as you called them, are references to a 60s cultural comedy tv show of the late 1960s called "Laugh In"....which was a take off on the 1960s social phenomenon known as a "Love In'.
I'm glad you got it as much as you did...the cultural and historical references really hit home for those in or near my age group, as they are much more recent history for us...as well as carrying of into the following couple of decades, to some degree......you did well.

This spoofs a lot of 60's tv shows and spy movies, but particularly James Bond. He had an arch nemesis named #1 (who Dr. Evil in this movie represents) and everyone in that guy's organization was designated by numbers, so there was a #2, #3, etc. He had a fluffy white cat. One of the Bond movies is named Goldfinger. (There are so many jokes, honestly.) Bond was considered very sexy and a man no woman could resist, so he slept with lots of women through the series of movies. Mike Myers does a fantastic job poking fun at those beloved old shows. :D
The guy giving Austin his stuff back after he's revived was a colleague of Myers and they presented a children's show here in the UK back in the 80's.

Yeah, Baby! This is a groovy franchise, and I can really dig it baby! Each movie has something to offer, additional twists, characters and cameos, and more James Bond 007 parody than Sean Connery, George Lazenby and Roger Moore combined! I look forward to seeing your reaction to all of them.
