As a tech worker, i fail to understand the need for more H1B visas. During 2020 there was a big hiring in tech. It has corrected itself, and now my LinkedIn is full of people stating they can't find work. Clearly, there is a pool of candidates in tech that are still looking for work. Why not prioritize getting these folks a job instead of raising the cap on H1B?
Exactly, h1b visas are nothing special. Maybe a tiny few of them but the majority aren't special! They just accept lower wages and more hours. Sometimes they know the hiring team from back home.
I've talked to friends struggling to find work in the tech industry. I am moderate-right and I think H1B visas are good for the country to be able to compete globally and get the best talent. But once again, we need to take a look at the exploitation of this system. To me, focus on the border first. We are going to have more legal immigrants coming, we need to find security on border and illegal immigration.
How about this. Let's make companies pay the same pay to H-1B workers they pay to Americans for the same work. Then we will see how many they actually need for the talent!
Companies have a high bar to clear already with USCIS on justifying these applications - they need to prove that they are paying a market based salary for the position.

To stay relevant in today's world, consumers demand a lot. Companies who can meet those expectations with relatively low cost, stay relevant. For that, they rely on hard working, flexible staff. Culturally it's Asians on H1B for tech roles and Mexicans on H2-B for non tech roles fits the bill.
If television journalists were being brought into this country by the tens of thousands, this CNN host would be singing a different tune. American Universities are preparing plenty of tech workers to join the workforce but they end up in minimum wage jobs because tech workers from the rest of the world are given special privileges due to pressure from corporate America in Washington DC. I now work with their replacements and I continue to train them. These H1B replacements aren’t the geniuses Elon Musk makes them out to be. These are people willing to work for a lower wage. I am a life long democrat and retired union worker and I have witnessed 28 year employees of ( John Deere) lose their jobs for these h-1b people. The6 pay lower wages for these people. Americans losing their jobs for cheap labor.

I agree with most of what Vivek said. We also need to look at how the system works against Americans. The problem is Americas can't afford college. They let people come over as exchange students with grants to go to college for free. Then they get a work visa, then job that sponsors them to get citizenship. I have seen it may times. Maybe if they looked at some of the STEM or gifted and talented schools here and gave them the same grants as the exchange students, Americans could do well in those jobs. Time for America first.

The United States has some of the best universities in the world, and its citizens are highly educated and intelligent. While these individuals could be rehired, Silicon Valley corporations and others, often choose not to hire them because doing so would require paying top dollar. Instead, they prefer to hire non-American workers on H-1B visas, offering salaries that are 50% lower and providing reduced medical benefits and other compensation.

Did you know that Trump tried to raise the minimum wage for H1B visa workers in October 2020 (during his first presidency)? He did. . . it's a fact. Go look into it. He did this to make importing H1B workers less lucrative which in turn would help American citizen STEM workers find and/or keep their jobs. Most of the people getting visas through the H1B program were people who originally came to USA as Masters(and Bachelors to a smaller extent) students, then graduated and got jobs. They are paying far more than an American citizen to study in the USA, and even more when compared to someone with an in state tuition fees. Moreover, the purchase value of that money in their home countries is probably 2x to 5x of what that same amount is in the USA(not that this should matter to US citizens, but just saying). If you study in your own state. Is education really that expensive in the US ?

This is true but you better believe that if the workers were not imported, the jobs would just be exported, just like what happened in lower-wage jobs like manufacturing in decades past, especially after domestic labor unions' power peaked. Artificially protecting American workers and their high-paying positions just does not work in the long run, I wish it did. What goes up must come down, or corrected. The most we can do is slow its descent. I understand the desire to keep the wages high, and morally oppose the overwork and underpayment which I wish didn't exist anywhere. But we are a global economy, whose people became addicted to high pay and low cost goods during the last 30-40 years when the dynamic was: cheaply made goods offshore, resulting in Walmart, etc. (which had its own consequences), and people who had labor laws in place (mostly) to protect them from sweatshop jobs, and a higher wage environment for more skilled trade jobs. Now the skilled jobs are in danger and people are wondering how and why. Offshore economies got more sophisticated, while the human rights did not as much. Only ideals separate us from the dog-eat-dog reality of capitalist competition. It is really funny to watch conservatives try to reconcile labor rights with their own corporate-friendly policies though. No one knows what to do except watch the physics manifest as the playing field levels between us and the rest of the world and our quality of life drops alongside that.
Engineering is a huge talking point here. The biggest exploitation I’ve seen in my life with H1-B visas is in the hospitality industry. I spent two summers on Mackinac island where 80% + of the staffing is H1-B visa recipients. Having worked in management and seen the books I can say with 100% certainty that the only reason they are using these migrants is to make more money for themselves by paying a non living wage to non US citizens. I even wrote up a proposal for an all non immigrant staffing option so we wouldn’t have to deal with the headache of the H1-B visa paper work. I was told it ate into the profits too much. This from a single restaurant that profited, not generated, but profited over $450,000.00 in a three and a half month period where they are open. My proposal would have profited only $40k less with the same revenue and costs. Greed is greed pure and simple. The program needs to be cleaned up and visas should only be given if the job cannot be filled by an American worker. Being cheap is not an excuse.

The specific jobs I was referring to would have been filled in minutes if they were willing to pay normal industry wages by existing Americans. These are not positions for “highly skilled” individuals. It’s general menial work in the hospitality industry. They just want to pay $10/hr instead of the going rates of between $16 and 20/hr. That is stealing jobs from Americans and an abuse of the system. Also, just to be clear, not the migrants fault. Everyone on my staff was there legally, H1-B visa paperwork all in order, and every one of them extremely hard working. They were making more per day here than they would in a month back home so I completely see why they would want to come here and glad they did so legally. The issue I’m attempting to address is with business owners exploiting the system for their own greed.

Elon saying US doesn't have enough highly-skilled workforce, when 7.8 % of US aerospace engineers is unemployed boiled my blood and I'm not even American. Out of top 10 most unemployed degrees in US, 2 are actually STEM fields. Only about 50 % of STEM educated people stay in their respective field that they studied - also check out how well STEM educated Americans actually performed against elite of this world globally. For all the faults in US education system, STEM students actually were amongst the best. These stats show no shortage of highly skilled US workforce. However there's shortage of guys like Elon and co. willing to pay more than bag of snacks for 90h week.

Because it’s routinely abused as a means to better control workers at lower than market wages. That visa ties the worker to that specific employer (sponsor) until that worker can line up a different sponsor or self-deport.

Continued reliance on the H1B visa program without prioritizing the training and development of American workers will have serious consequences. This is what will happen: H1B-> Green Card -> Citizenship -> Get elected or manager role in US corporation -> Colonize USA. When individuals from India attain positions of power, they always hire or support others from their own country rather than local American talents. This often results in entire departments becoming predominantly composed of individuals from India. This trend is noticeable in many Fortune 500 companies in the USA.
If this country is going to rely on American people only, this country will go down the drain. US has been built on international talent and force from the beginning of its history. That is what has made the country we know.

70% all doctors and nurses in the USA are immigrants. And still the wait time to see specialists like dermatologists and chest doctors is over 6 months in most of the USA.
Race is not a factor in the debate about H-1B visas. National security edges are a factor in a globally complex/competitive world. Engineering and technology skills are valuable in terms of military superiority on a global stage. Advanced American oil production/extraction techologies are a factor. Global foreign interests vs U.S. interests are a factor. Strong domestic engineer/tech grads are always a strength.

My husband came to the US to do his ph.d with a full scholarship. He attended an elite school in India and joined the University of Michigan's mechanical engineering program as a ph.d student. I attended the University of Texas and graduated with a 3.9/4 GPA. Two of my professors offered me a Ph.D. under them. I could not join the ph.d program because my husband had to leave the US. We left US well before our H1B visa expired (6 months before H1B visa expiry). We did not overstay in US. We paid all taxes and contributed to social security. Never lived or worked in US illegally. But, the green card process was so uncertain and lengthy that we decided to move to another country, where we finally settled. Many H1B visa holders face similar situations - living every day with uncertainty. I support President Trump's immigration policy. I support the fact that illegal immigration should be stopped.

Why would someone leave the US even before their work visa expires? You can not only stay for the full duration if the H-1B visa which is 3 years but beyond that as well if your employer has applied for renewal before visa expiry. Your extension if approved, gives you 3 more years. As for the green cards, agree with you on that one. However, you can live and work in the country without any issue till your green card application is in process if you remain in valid H-1B status.

Both are STEM fields, both are pre-requisits of highly skilled workforce and both are in top 10 unemployment rate. Only 50 % of STEM graduates will actually work in their field. Take a look at how well STEM graduates from US actually performed in comparison to other countries. For all of US education faults, US STEM fields students are the best. This issue has nothing to do with shortage of workforce, but having cheap labor force, that's easily controled and exploited with threats of getting basically deported with loss of sponsor (employer) and so on.

Free training and certification goes to off shore folks first and then at some time later when there is already an army qualified applicants Americans can then the training if they pay thousands of dollars for it. As a tech worker, i fail to understand the need for more H1B visas. During 2020 there was a big hiring in tech. It has corrected itself, and now my LinkedIn is full of people stating they can't find work. Clearly, there is a pool of candidates in tech that are still looking for work. Why not prioritize getting these folks a job instead of raising the cap on H1B?

They let people come over as exchange students with grants to go to college for free. Then they get a work visa, then job that sponsors them to get citizenship. I have seen it may times. The United States has some of the best universities in the world, and its citizens are highly educated and intelligent. Most of the people getting visas through the H1B program were people who originally came to USA as Masters(and Bachelors to a smaller extent) students, then graduated and got jobs.
They are paying far more than an American citizen to study in the USA, and even more when compared to someone with an in state tuition fees.
Moreover, the purchase value of that money in their home countries is probably 2x to 5x of what that same amount is in the USA(not that this should matter to US citizens, but just saying).

But we are a global economy, whose people became addicted to high pay and low cost goods during the last 30-40 years when the dynamic was: cheaply made goods offshore, resulting in Walmart, etc. (which had its own consequences), and people who had labor laws in place (mostly) to protect them from sweatshop jobs, and a higher wage environment for more skilled trade jobs. Now the skilled jobs are in danger and people are wondering how and why. Offshore economies got more sophisticated, while the human rights did not as much. Only ideals separate us from the dog-eat-dog reality of capitalist competition. It is really funny to watch conservatives try to reconcile labor rights with their own corporate-friendly policies though. No one knows what to do except watch the physics manifest as the playing field levels between us and the rest of the world and our quality of life drops alongside that.
Engineering is a huge talking point here. The biggest exploitation I’ve seen in my life with H1-B visas is in the hospitality industry. I spent two summers on Mackinac island where 80% + of the staffing is H1-B visa recipients. Having worked in management and seen the books I can say with 100% certainty that the only reason they are using these migrants is to make more money for themselves by paying a non living wage to non US citizens. I even wrote up a proposal for an all non immigrant staffing option so we wouldn’t have to deal with the headache of the H1-B visa paper work. I was told it ate into the profits too much. This from a single restaurant that profited, not generated, but profited over $450,000.00 in a three and a half month period where they are open. My proposal would have profited only $40k less with the same revenue and costs. Greed is greed pure and simple. The program needs to be cleaned up and visas should only be given if the job cannot be filled by an American worker. Being cheap is not an excuse.

The specific jobs I was referring to would have been filled in minutes if they were willing to pay normal industry wages by existing Americans. These are not positions for “highly skilled” individuals. It’s general menial work in the hospitality industry. They just want to pay $10/hr instead of the going rates of between $16 and 20/hr. That is stealing jobs from Americans and an abuse of the system. Also, just to be clear, not the migrants fault. Everyone on my staff was there legally, H1-B visa paperwork all in order, and every one of them extremely hard working. They were making more per day here than they would in a month back home so I completely see why they would want to come here and glad they did so legally. My husband came to the US to do his ph.d with a full scholarship. He attended an elite school in India and joined the University of Michigan's mechanical engineering program as a ph.d student. I attended the University of Texas and graduated with a 3.9/4 GPA. Two of my professors offered me a Ph.D. under them. I could not join the ph.d program because my husband had to leave the US. We left US well before our H1B visa expired (6 months before H1B visa expiry). We did not overstay in US. We paid all taxes and contributed to social security. Never lived or worked in US illegally. But, the green card process was so uncertain and lengthy that we decided to move to another country, where we finally settled. Many H1B visa holders face similar situations - living every day with uncertainty. I support President Trump's immigration policy. I support the fact that illegal immigration should be stopped.

Why would someone leave the US even before their work visa expires? You can not only stay for the full duration if the H-1B visa which is 3 years but beyond that as well if your employer has applied for renewal before visa expiry. Your extension if approved, gives you 3 more years. As for the green cards, agree with you on that one. However, you can live and work in the country without any issue till your green card application is in process if you remain in valid H-1B status.

Free training and certification goes to off shore folks first and then at some time later when there is already an army qualified applicants Americans can then the training if they pay thousands of dollars for it. That's more than just putting a thumb on the scale. So it's not just the companies hiring that are involved it's the software and hardware companies that are making sure Americans have a very difficult and expensive time getting those jobs. I stopped advising young people to get into IT 15 years ago because I saw what was happening.
