You have to understand that Canadians are a "colonized" people. It is in our DNA to beg powerful countries. Both French and English Canadians have a reverence for governments that is absent among Americans.
O.D. Skelton, a famous grey eminence of the Liberal Party (when it was a respectable party) was in a meeting circa 1935 where the relationship of Canada towards the British Empire was discussed. A person mentioned that perhaps it was time for Canada to have an "American" policy emphasizing the wishes of the new "superpower". Skelton told the guy next to him: "Why not a Canadian policy for a change."
In 1962, during the Bomarc missile affair, the Liberals of Pearson decided that we would be an American poodle. This was the end of any Canadian nationalism worth a dime. Pearson scuttle our military and we decided to be slaves of the Americans. So why paying a dime in NATO when we are de facto protected by the Yanks? Trump feels this and exploits it. I would do the same in his shoes.
I do not like Trudeau-the-Father but it is worth remembering that he got us his Charter after 10 begging attempts by Canadians to have the Brits release our constitution to us.
Americans had a war of independence. Canadians, neither English nor French, ever fought successfully for their own independence. The absolute sheepish way Canadians accepted Emperor Justin's Emergency Act (Old War Measure Act rebaptized) is something that would be TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE to the average Yankee. Apparently not acceptable to South Koreans either!
The curfew imposed by the various provincial governments were reminiscent, at least in Quebec, of the domination of the Catholic Church pre-1960s. In Alberta, allegedly the more American province, they arrested pastors who want to celebrate in their churches as the communists did in Eastern Europe.
      So excuse my pessimism.
That said: nothing can be worse than Justin Trudeau, the worse PM since confederation.

He comes across as Normal, speaks common sense and how I wish we could unearth someone with those qualities down here in Oz. But I digress, my instinct tells me that Trump & Poilievre, will get on just fine. This in turn gives both countries the best chance to prosper and achieve their respective goals.

Canada does not have enough military spending to cover such massive landscape, and losing Canadian land to whoever’s attacking is going pose significant threat to the U.S, especially now that we’re on the brink of world war 3, which might have already started. Uniting Canada gives U.S the time to bring much stronger military presence up north.
