It's definitely the Duskwight in me talking, but "The early Gridanians were not barbaric" is a slightly suspicious statement when it comes to Toto-Rak's lore. The names on the map are clearly left over from when it was an active dungeon. There is no longer any Ser Aucheforne of the High Tide in his old cell (or in any of the older named cells that are no longer with us in the newly simplified map) So they are a clue to the original dungeon's function. The Way of Penance. The Confession Chamber. All those might seem harsh but fair. The real unpleasant revelation comes when you get to the final boss room. The colony's Banemite makes her nest in the Abacination Chamber. Then, well, all that's left is to look up what that word means. It's not pretty. It's not even possible to imagine a situation where it is warranted, or when it is kinder than simple execution. It's a term for a torture that ends in permanent blinding. ... And while it might be tempting to dismiss as just a cool word the designers stuck on there without considering it, there's a sort of sick poetry in using it on prisoners who would be, in their majority, Duskwights and Keepers of the Moon, two people who live in darkness. Why, they hardly even need their eyes at all, to start with! I'm sorry, but, while it isn't always blatant and spelled out, the Gridanian authorities aren't depicted as harsh but fair when it comes to the Duskwights and Keepers of the Moon of the Twelveswood. Whether dealing with the true criminals from those groups or just with those groups as a whole, they are merely depicted as harsh. Frequently and consistently harsh.
These dungeon lore videos are definitely my favourite of yours, alongside the job lore videos. You present this stuff in such a professional manner making it super easy to digest and understand everything!
I had a very interesting experience regarding the first time I went into Toto-Rak. I started playing some time after Heavensward came out and at the time I was very inexperienced with MMO'S. I ended up with the most disjointed party you could get, the biggest problem was the healer. Every time we fought a group of monsters it ended up the same way. The tank running through the endless hallways with a bunch of monsters chasing them. Me and the other dps chasing them trying to pick them off. At some point after wiping to the second boss for the 13th time the other dps left. While we were waiting I decided to tell the healer to focus on healing the tank. After that it went a lot smoother not perfect but we actually managed to get to the end. For me Toto-rak is the dungeon that taught me how a party is supposed to work together.
Thanks again for making these :D always good to know the lore of dungeons rather than just thinking were suppose to storm them with no idea of what happened before our appearance ^_^
I really love these dungeon lore videos! I haven't watched your job lore videos yet, because I am currently grinding them and I don't want to spoil myself, but I am almost done with Dark Knight. Congrats on the anniversary!
Love this video! Also maybe it would be a fun idea to make a video about the lambs of dalamund and those who worthshipped dalamund? ( where it originated from, side branches like dalamiq tribe, and what happened to them? )
Are you planning anything to go over the retconned lore as a little aside maybe? The retcon was rather recent so I think it would be interesting to go over the changes. Also, what is a photocell even?
I think adding your sources is a great touch. I'm sure not everything has a direct source, but even learning where your inferences are based off of are nice. There's so much lore sources, seeing where you dig is an inspiration for people who are interested in searching themselves.
Is the fact that Toto-Rak was a prison the justification for the magitek photocells and terminals the old version had? I never really understood their inclusion from a lore standpoint, just that ARR dungeons sometimes had weird isolated mechanics - like teleporters - for more gameplay reasons.
Gelmorra was going to be a big deal in 1.0 before yoshi-p took over and iirc toto-rak was available with the release the game. Gelmorrans had weird technology and I guess one of of those was the photocells
So the Magitek Photocell stuff was retconned out of the dungeon after it got reworked. By the new lore, Garleans never created and left barriers behind in Toto-Rak and an entire plot of aether induced madness is gone. So yeah. I have to cut all that out.
Teacher! Teacher! Have you ever thought of performing your lectures like that of The history teacher Metal band Sabaton?! Or if they could collaborate with you?

Dungeon and past civs videos are the best. Keep it up!
This dungeon lore is definitely gonna help with dungeon building for my FFXIV DnD party, thanks a lot.
You're welcome!

Great dungeon lore exploration!! Thanks for this! Would love to hear about what was originally planned before the retcon.
I agree with the others, it would be nice to hear what exactly was the deal with Toto-Rak before the retcon scrubbed the magitek out!

Might like to see a lore video on the different kinds of flora and fauna of our world. Visit and examine the various kins.
I had this great idea of making a book of all the beasts in FFXIV and make it like a documentary xD but then I realized how little content it is
You tell excellent stories!

I actually covered that cult in my analysis of Tam-Tara since they set up a base there! They were a dangerous group for sure.

Oh this was great! I didnt know there was so much lore about toto rak

@@SynodicScribe Yeah a bit confusing that you have to act in the limits of your character but I think it's worth it for the quality
It is sad that a dungeon with such nice lore used to be the worst dungeon to get in roulette's.
I like this Dungeons Videos very much
Thanks for sharing; take care 🔥 ❤ 🌙
Toe-Toe-Rock
Diremites, eh? ... Looks like another culling aka farming for mats, is in order...
... How did I miss this was a prison??? o.O

I've not, but I'll certainly do some research into it some time!
Honestly I thought the story for this dungeon would be way darker
Not gonna lie, it actually was darker before the dungeon got retconned. lol
