Task lighting is everything. In your case it would brighten up your kitchen and emphasize the warm glow of the wood. A light over the stove is essential. TBH, I'm sensitive to lighting in any room and cannot tolerate fluorescent lights. As for the food, I can almost feel the warmth of your kitchen and smell the aroma of the good things being made with your hands. Delightful.

Brown paper packages tied up with strings. I was hoping you were going to show this! I wanted to hold the surprise for others, Chelsea! Thank you!! If you could’ve seen my reaction. I’m going “what is this? I don’t know what this is?!” Blurry minded recovering from major open back surgery. And WOW!!! I found under that mailer a Brown paper packages tied up with strings .. “These are a few of my favorite things!” - 🎉🙌🏻📙🎶🎵
I love having your Beautiful cookbook on my collection. I bet you’ll find something special that you can reconfigure into that spot. They wouldn’t look bad on top of the fridge either. And the jars that are there now on shelf you could use where you’ll be waiting to find the perfect piece. Absolutely love having your family in my relax spot. You have such positive energy and love of gardening as I do. I’m so hoping this year I can do more with my spinal reconstruction. ❤

I definitely see what you’re saying about the butcher block…but I also kind of love the white lip of the old counter peeking out over the butcher block, I think it breaks up the wood just enough to keep them visually disparate. Maybe a line or two of those subway tiles all the way around would be enough to do a similar trick? Keep it light and bright while still maintaining the beauty of both woods, and added bonus of being easier to wipe down than the logs.
Not to mention if your new sink will be white, that pop of ceramic will also lighten up that area.

My daughter put white quartz counter tops in her kitchen, and white subway tiles/darker grout (so no stains) on the walls, and it looks absolutely lovely. I was surprised because it's a whole lot of white, but her kitchen only has one small window, and all that white makes it bright and cheerful even on dark, rainy days. The counter tops are heat and stain resistant, so it's also durable and easy to clean. All those qualities makes her kitchen a joy to work in.
Wood is beautiful, but sometimes it's best to go in a different direction, especially when light is important. Whatever you end up choosing, I hope you absolutely love it.

I had a log home. The butcher block countertops will DEFINITELY be too dark and too much wood. Another option to consider is going without the white window valance or raising them as high as possible on the wall to increase natural window light.
But either way you do have a beautiful and functional home and kitchen.

You can put strips of led lights on the tiles to brighten up the work area a bit when nedded. Or have some light fixture on the ceiling that you can pull down when needed. Also I still recommend to put a layer of boat varnish on your butcher block countertops to prevent water/moisture damage over time.

Personally, I love the butcher block near the wood wall, there's so much white in the kitchen already, including appliances. The back splash between the counter and the wall being white will help to off set it and give it definition. Plus, what you see with your "sample" is twice as much wood as what would really be there.

But that bucher block went so beautifully with the wooden walls and it would tie the kitchen together and create harmony with the same kind of counter top. As a retired chiropractor, i whole heartly agree with raising up your counter tops and deep sink. I'm 5'4 1/2 " tall and when i had my retirement home built i had all counter's and bathroom sinks put in at 37" 1/2" high. A 1degree tilt forward is very hard on the lower back which has the smallest joint leverage. I retired at 56 years old and am now 81 and that was the best move i did for my lower back. I've noticed that with your height you are developing an upper back hump, which will be greatly helped by raising, counter and i strongly recommend raising bathroom sinks which are stupidly low. Just suggestions.

I think the butcher block countertop is gorgeous, you could always do a whitewash stain on it if you wanted to lighten it up a little bit. (I think it's fine as is as long as it's a light-to-medium toned wood vs a dark wood.) You could always add some lighting, could even hide a light under the scrollwork shelf above your stove, if you want a bit more light on that side or to brighten in general. At the end of the day, this is your kitchen so do what makes you happiest! 💚

I agree that the butcher block makes it look darker. Even if it looks nice, living in a long and dark winter area, everything that brightens the room you mostly live in, it’s a plus so that it does not get depressing. You can definitely go with a lighter wood. And someone in the comments suggested to have more lighting only on top of where you work: stove, counters. I think that would be excellent, some warm(not too warm) light would make it feel cozy.

Chelsea, thank you for allowing us to travel with you on your reno journey. I, along with many others also love the look of the butcher block, but I also understand that many factors prevent us (viewers) from seeing it from your perspective. I am also a youtuber, so I know that lighting differences occur between actual light and video light. You are definitely seeing it from a different, but actual light perspective that we as viewers cannot see.
I am wondering if you have thought of the option of bringing the backslash up a bit higher onto your wall. Im aaking because i do have a friend who also faced the same dilemma as you are facing. She solved it by running the backslash higher up the wall and also added more lighting (under cabinets).
I hope you don't mind the suggestion. Either way your kitchen will be lovely. Have a blessed holiday! ❤

When you and Dan set the butcher block on the counter, I didn't think it looked too dark at all. Maybe it does in person; however, if you are thinking about how it will look for your UA-cam videos, maybe you could just set up an additional light when you're filming (like they do when a movie is being made, if that makes sense). If you want the butcher block for functionality reasons and with as much time that you spend in the kitchen preparing food and such, I say go for whatever is best for you. I really liked the wood countertop. I didn't think it was too dark but it was huge and seemed like a cave due to the overhang. No cabinet doors made it look twice as dark. I believe that a wooden counter top would be great especially once you get the white subway tiles around the top, breaking up all the wood. But you may have found something else that will work even better - it;s fun to have choices. Can't wait for the pantry tour. I just thought of something - installing bars of light under the cabinets to shine down on the butcher block would not only be useful, but really pretty ambient lighting at night. Just a thought.

To add some texture and interest to the white cabinets you could add shiplap, cut to size, to the doors, just inside the frame work. I did that to my cabinets because we had to add three cabinets during the remodel, and I didn’t have the strength to strip and paint all of the cabinets. Every cabinet got the same treatment (along with three sides of the island). It gave me enough white to appease my desire for white cabinets, and drew attention to the shiplap and not the pine, lacquered cabinets. White on white would look great on your cabinets!

I think that you were seeing the lower cabinet colors as darker due to the shadow caused by how wide the top was you were trying there. I think that the butcher block counters with a white backsplash and a white farmhouse sink will be stunning. Look at your island combo of butcher block and the cabinet color together to get the real tell of how they will work together. Love what you are doing to the kitchen.

I like the butcher block wood ...if you added white cannisters and white marble accessories turntables for olive oil and bottled vinegar ... and a cute small lamp would illuminate and be cozy....cute and functional and brighten the area 😊Also tie into white top cabinets
Don't forget cabinet hardware is like the jewelry also.

I would go with a white marble countertop since you are going to do white subway tiles on the backsplash, it would keep the kitchen brighter and keep the look of the white of the appliances and upper cabinets, the wood walls and ceiling have it's own character and they should be left to stand out beautifully as they do. I'm sure that whatever you decide it will be beautiful.
I am a homesteader in Ontario and i always look forward to watching your videos, God bless you and your family

I love the butcher block countertop it really brings together your wood walls. The lighter countertops is the focal point and takes away from the log walls

I thought the butcher block countertop looked beautiful. Remember the width of it would be much narrower and therefore not dominating the kitchen. This would also mean that the sage green of the cabinets will show up nicely.
Looking forward to see what you decide to do. I’ve had to catch up on several of your videos as I was away from home for a couple of weeks.
Your videos are amazing, incredibly educational and almost therapeutic to watch. Thank you for all the work you put in 😊

There’s a light colored (organic white) butcher block option you can go with

I love butcher block but with hou beautiful wooden walls, my opinion is a light colored counter! It will look beautiful regardless but for a bright and crisp look i recommend something similar to what you already have. White with copper looks beautiful.

I think the wood counter would be awesome.. You mentioned you are considering a wide molding trim in white. That will bring the brightness factor up for sure. Think about it for sure. I think it will all balance out. Great channel!
