A Russian engineer, a pretty skilled one, has done 3/4 of a Formula 1 racer in his garage with carbon fiber and ON HIS OWN! ua-cam.com/video/3nIDHZH9vUg/v-deo.htmlsi=eIKH9qVhpGn5UAqs Not to mention a French mechanic who's started a restoration project like this.
As soon as you said that you 3D printed the fenders I had a hunch you used those big ass Ellegoo printer's, and the video proved my hunch right. This car is so awesome, and the fact that 3D printing is part of it kicks it up a notch for me. Can't wait to see it finished!
This is awesome! We make a large format 3d printer that should be able to print those finders all at once with a separate support material. If you guys are doing much more of this or have a project that could use a larger printer let us know we would be happy to work with you guys on something like this.
Interested, personally. Do you have info on the large format printers, that is big enough to print a whole fender? Or do you have a way to get in touch, or even a link?
I built a 1.5x1.5x2.5 meter printer for projects like this and ended up selling it because it only had 2 nozzles pla and support filament, with 5 smaller printers I was able to print 4 times faster because I had mor nozzles working at the same time, also if a part failed it wasn't a huge issue in comparison to 1 large print
I'm gonna go crazy if this car doesn't win something at SEMA. Please, if there are any online votes or anything, put it out on socials, on youtube, anywhere. The Legacy must win!
HI, just to say (I don't know if you know it) but avoid direct contact between metal (any kind) and carbon fiber, it will induce corrosion if there is water. You need to isolate the 2 surfaces from each other. It's simple, most people use a ply of glass fiber between carbon fiber and the metal (or any other non-conductive material). Good project continue like that.
"We're new to 3d printing, so I don't know"........meanwhile, building an entire car from 3d printed parts!! Holy crap, what will you build when you master the art?? LOL. Love the modesty and your channel.
Progress is looking great!! A tip I could give would be to tab in an egg-crate on the back side of the molds after cure, before removing from the plug. This will keep the geometry from changing under vac when making parts. For what you have done so far, I'm very happy to see the consistency of completion. A lot of projects of this scale hit major delays or never see the light of day. Excited for the next video!
I don't know much about car fab, but I know my way around 3D printing. I came to learn how it is used for carbon fiber work. I appreciate you showing how it is done. Nothing wrong with how you did the 3d printing in vase mode. A few 3D printing things you might try. In prusa slicer you can split the model and add connectors so they snap together so they are already registered. I would probably do infill over the vase mode to give it some better structure, like 10% and use adaptive cubic infill to keep the print times down. The infill will keep the parts strong and consistent. When gluing 3d printed parts, epoxy works, but there are bonding agents for PLA and PETG plastics. It might save some cure time and effort over the hefty applicator. Check out gloop or ca glue works well too. All just suggestions in hopes that it helps a bit, no worries if it doesn't work for your purpose.🍻🍻
I almost did this, then found a large form CNC machinist near me. Got a whole side of a car CNC into a negative or “plug” to lay one piece of carbon into SO much cheaper, easier and quicker. The foam machined plug was like $390, just send them the cad file and happy days. It is one use but I’ve had not deformities or anything. Had the option to pay a few hundred more dollarydoos to have a 5x reusable one but I’m only make one Porsche haha
That seam you could pin strip it with your accent colour…. This looks amazing and really like the way you are rolling out the content….. well worth the wait
Everything you guys are doing is so sick! Favorite part of this video though has to be that some one else but me finally remembered "I like turtles!" 🤣🤣🤣
Very nice, goes to show what some 3D printers can do. I've always kindof dismissed printing for carving foam but I think at this point the 'ease' of just letting the printer chug might trump the work of loading foam onto a large router that is only going to get one side real good. For mirroring contours and details my go-to is always just take some paper and trace the shape on one side, cut the line out to make a template and tape it down on the other side. I suppose if the left and right sides don't lay quite the same it might push the template off a bit but wouldn't be too bad unless they were notably different topologies.
3D printing is super neat with its use cases. Not that I’ve done anything to this level but I measure a blank switch plate for my Z, redesigned it in Fusion360, and added a hole the exact size of a switch I was using for my air compressor setup for my aircups. The button fit in super snugly after a few tries and since I designed it in CAD it was perfectly center and snapped right into my dash just like OEM. What you guys are doing it a whole different level and just goes to show the many uses for these inexpensive FDM home printers
For future reference, you can buy material 50" wide, but almost any length you could want. One piece for the outer skin and however many pieces you wish for the inside layers. :) No need at all for any butted joints because of a 50" limit.
After watching RamiRc years back where he creates largescale model planes using this method, I always wondered if it would ever be used to make car bodies. Great work! It's pretty cool seeing someone else bring the same thought to fruition.
DuraMix 40/40 FTW!!! I have always spoken that stuffs praises! Not sure what it's called over here but where i'm from it's Duramix 40/40, and I used to use it a ton when making custom plastic Head Unit plates since my main work consisted of Fiberglass subwoofer enclosures and the such, from time to time this included making paint matching smooth custom Head Unit surrounding plates to replace the stock that would leave section of space, and mine would fic it up to look custom but also factory look if thats what a client so desired.
I started watching scraplife garage's dodge demon burn car rebuild, saw you there, so I decided to check you out too, I love European cars and love Japan auto makers especially old school Nissan's. The Fairlady 240z and 280z I love them alot, but my no.1 is the 2000gt
An EV swapped 240z with a re-created 3D printed Carbon fiber body is literally the car I came up with in my dreams a few years ago. Absolutely wild to see someone taking on the challenge for real!
Says they 3D Printed it, provides next to 0 information on how or what material is used, doesn't even know anything about 3D printing and doesn't let the other guy who does in the video help explain anything. Love it. Cant even tell us if its PLA or something else xD
It's a shame for such a project to lack the engineering utilization. I literally wrote a essay about it, but because i got frustrated, decided to delete it. Would love to have a chat with you lads and provide you as much information as i can.
The style of this is not quite my cup of tea, make no doubt if I saw it I would be wowed, it's just a taste thing. That said the craftsmanship and process of creating this project is simply on a whole other level. I am just in awe and I have built cars for decades now. Thanks for taking us along!
Was just thinking about doing this to a 914, I have 3D scanned the car and made STL files of the body sections to 3D print the panels using them as a core and wrap them in Carbon Fiber. The issue I see is that the 914 body is one piece and welded to the frame, making it a little more challenging.
I was thinking the same thing, but unless they printed everything in an enclosed printer, warping may have made it more difficult to line up during glue up. Without the mortice and tenon's, it was easier to fudge it if the parts did warp at all?
What a build! This deserves to go viral.
Go head spread the word lets make it happen
This build deserves to viral more then most youtuber builds, the originality alone is worth it.
Hopefully it's taking flight now. I just got it in my recommended. This is an awesome build.

😍 Wow, great way to make a mold. I hope my carbon turns out that good on my V12 build 😎

Very affordable too for what they are … resin printers are rad too ..I make badges and smaller cleaner parts with one …
This video had made me go on a search for 3d printers and you may have just solved my problem ellegoo

Work like this completely restores my love for all the classic fairladys. 😍
That small detail of the line you made for the bucket light look made a huge difference! Crazy how that worked.
Every next episode is my new favorite episode. You guys have really pushed your build into the future with this one!!
😂 small world. Both of you are inspiring
This series needs to be hypetized and viralized!
This is going to be an absolute kick ass rig. Y’all are killing it
This build is coming along so well! It is HELLA wide, it's so dope!
Don't mind me sitting here with my notepad open, stealing all these tips and tricks 🥸
lol next video we will dive more in depth with the printers so keep that notebook close 😂
When can we expect a collaboration?
Funny thing is besides the lack of all the sanding I felt like I was watching a tofu video, lol.😂

this was super cool to see the process of printing it to glueing it to the mold to carbon. friggin sick boys! love these videos!
Everything your team does is so damn impressive!
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Best channel on the tube
Will with the Knees did a great job printing those fenders!
he approves of this message 😂
I love that body style - this is the first video of this series I’m seeing, I had to go to the description to see that it’s 240z based, earned a subb
that sanding montage with the transitions ahhhh beautiful
I've told more then one person about this project, It's that awesome!

Uh what filament is used for this
The boys are absolutely grinding with these uploads. Cheers boys. I’ll always tune in
One of the coolest builds this year, incredible work.
The ambition o this project is nuts and it's really cool seeing the nitty gritty of it getting done
Looking forward to the next video showing the 3D printing details. I’ve wanted to try this for years, so I’m stoked to see what you guys do!!!!
It just not fair how talented yall are!
Yo this is cool as hell. The algorithm is pushing this to people who aren't subscribed - so keep it up.
Did this with my 3D printed miata hardtop! I love seeing it taken to this scale! Awesome project guys!
oh man, I want a more in depth making carbon fiber part video! Loved this, great project. so awesome man, you're killing it
