  • #housemaintenance In this video I install Amerimax Home Products Lock-In Gutter Guards along the entire length of our gutters on our house. I hope this will keep the gutters from filling up with leaves and debris every year and needing to be cleaned out. We'll see how well they work in the long-run. Please visit my blog at www.mdpub.com for more information.

I used to hate when people had these on their homes when I had to clean out their gutters. Yes, you heard that clean them out, they definitely reduce the amount of cleaning however the small stuff does build up and removing them is a pain to clean

Jack (Mike) of all trades. They look nice and neat installed. If stuff gets caught in the mesh, maybe you can use a stiff brush or broom to clear them and keep them working OK. 👍

I used to manage a shop for one of the larger gutter companies in Denver. Back when gutter guards first came out. The owner of the company wanted to sell these but was not confident that they would work as advertised. He installed them on his house to test them. Around his house, he had two ponderosa pines and a bunch of elm trees. At first, things looked good. Most of the tree debris just came off the roof and did not get stuck in the gutter. The pine needles, though, got stuck in the openings of the gutter guard. A late fall rain shower proved to him that the gutter guards were not all they were cracked up to be. The pine needles stuck in the gutter guards had caught a lot of the leaves falling off the elms. This, in turn, blocked the water shedding off his roof from entering his gutters. Not good. Instead of removing the gutter guards, he decided to leave them and see how they worked over a full year. He cleaned all the stuck debris when the leaves stopped falling. Which took longer than just cleaning out uncovered gutters. After this, he had no problems throughout winter, spring, and summer. When fall came back, he noticed the same problem with the pine needles getting stuck and decided to remove the gutter guards. Before he got around to it, an early snow storm had hit. It wasn't a big storm, but the sudden temperature drop had caused ice damning along the perimeter of his house. The weight of the ice on top of his gutters caused some of them to be ripped off his house. He did not have this issue in the years prior to the gutter guards being installed.
In my opinion, gutter guards give a homeowner a false sense of security. Once gutter guards are installed, people think that they never have to worry about their gutters again. The owner of that gutter company did experience an extreme issue with gutter guards. This won't be the case for everyone. There are a lot of factors to consider. Do you have a lot of trees around your house? What kind of trees? Do you live in an area that is prone to ice storms? Etc...
Mike, I suggest you monitor your gutters for a full year and see if any issues arise. They may work perfectly for you. If you become complacent, they may cause you a more expensive issue in the future.

We live in the south no ice. We have Torrential summer rains that hopefully will flush anything small right out. And no pine trees close to the house for the needles to get stuck. I think if we have a big thunderstorm they might just blow right off. Time will tell about all of these scenarios. Fingers crossed.

Like my wife said below, no pine trees nearby and no freezing. Our problem is oak leaves, and catkins. We'll see how these guardss do with those. I expect some stuff will get stuck in the mesh, and some will go through. The kind of rains we get here during the rainy season should move anything along that can make it through the mesh. If thee guards become a problem, they can come off a lot easier and quicker than they went on.

I am impressed you typed all that without errors. I would still be fixing my mistakes.

I have the same gutter guards professionally installed, it made our problem worse actually, now we’re removing it one by one and it’s a pain. This was the worst investment we’ve ever made for our home improvement project
