Prepping and Decontaminating the Surface Before Applying The Last Coat

  • We have had a lot of customers asking for a prep video on how to decontaminate a vehicle exterior before applying sealants such as The Last Coat. In this video, Nick shows us how he likes to prep if the surface is contaminated and rough, to get some good adhering of The Last Coat once it's applied. Although The Last Coat can be applied to a vehicle that has simply been washed, or even as a light waterless wash, on the initial application it's a great idea to strip the surface of any prior waxes, sealants, and contamination.
    ● All of the products that Nick uses in the video can be found at our products page located here:

      On first application we highly recommend someone applying on as clean and bare a surface as possible.
      Step One: Wash your vehicle.( With a soap with no wax added)
      Step Two: Decontaminate the paint surface with a clay mitt, clay bar or chemical removal.
      Step Three: (if paint requires it, if not move on to step four). Compound/polish (paint correction) the paint surface to remove swirls, defects and bring the surface to a high gloss.
      Step Four: Wipe down the vehicle with 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) on a microfiber and let the IPA air dry or use a surface prep cleaner. This will remove all waxes, polishing oils if used, and residue to ensure a clean surface.

    In the video you recommend using whatever remaining “The Last Soap” we have and diluting it with water to use as clay lube when using a clay bar or with a clay mitt.
    How many mL’s would you recommend to use in a 32 oz spray bottle? In a separate video you recommend a great hack of 23 mLs of AMP and distilled water mixed in a spray bottle as a window cleaner for tinted windows, but you weren’t as specific in this video. How much would you suggest?

    Looks like a great product, looking forward to receiving my first bottle. I have read that this can be used as a topper over existing ceramic coatings (Carpro)? Does it require special prep to be used this way? Thanks

    • @TheLastCoat
      @TheLastCoat  4 роки тому +2

      Keep in mind though that for cars that have been ceramic coated, you can use even less TLC. An average sized car takes 1-3 ounces for the exterior if it's not ceramic coated, so that gives you an idea of how little you need to use on a ceramic car. Ceramic and TLC share many of the same chemical properties so TLC will help rebuild and protect ceramic over time. Our new upgraded version of The Last Coat has a ceramic base.
      Prep is more or less the same, if the surface is contaminated you can do some light claying. Some will simply wash, dry, and apply.
      Do not use soaps with wax added.

      Nick will metal decon but only do it for deep contamination on certain parts of the vehicles like back and upper sections. Claying still removes most if not all of the contamination unless it’s really embedded and has been uncared for. In those cases we will decon further, yes.

    Question about the process with the alcohol.

    Some detailers recommend using a 50/50 ipa and water wash as pure ipa can soften the clear coat. Also, some recommend doing the ipa wash before the machine polish.
    The videos says to use 100% ipa spray on the paint. Is that safe?

    • @TheLastCoat
      @TheLastCoat  3 роки тому

      Nick uses a 70% IPA concentration as the highest he goes, so he doesn’t dilute it as it is already cut 30%. 50/50 works as well, you can also buy 50% IPA. We would never go above 70% concentration.

    I have a 42ft 5th wheel camper. A large amount of surface area has decals on it. I'm worried a clay mit and IPA wipe might damage the decals. Would a simple wash (last wash or car wash) work prior to TLC2 application?

    • @TheLastCoat
      @TheLastCoat  4 роки тому

      Neither would damage the decals when used properly. If you don’t want to decontaminate the vinyl and IPA then yes a good solid wash with medium to high pressure water after to remove all surfactants from the surface. Then dry the camper and apply TLC2.

  • @KrlsPark
    @KrlsPark 3 роки тому

    I applied TLC2 3 months ago and then reapplied it now, is that recommended?
    A couple of questions more, Could I use GO2 as a watterless wash method frequently to just keep it super shine (less effort) and how often is it recommended to avoid swirls and scratches?
    Also I as a maintenance, Could I use AMP as a topper to boost the shine after a two bucket wash method (more effort), and how often a 2 bucket wash method is recommended?
    Thanks in advance, you guys rock with this products!

    • @TheLastCoat
      @TheLastCoat  3 роки тому

      Ya you can reapply as often as you like. As for waterless washing it’s about the technique used and a car that only has light dust. We don’t recommend waterless washing a extremely dirty vehicle. Short answer yes you can use GO2 for quick clean ups. I always advise using one bucket with a grit guard in the bottom to wash the vehicle body use a second bucket for wheels, exhaust tips and fender wells. Use a different wash mitt in each that will be dedicated to the body or the wheels. I always advise washing this way anytime your going to use water for a detailed wash.

    My car has a pretty wonderful finish and is glossy as I use a clay bar and sealant 2-3 times a year, but I'd still like to try this. Do I have to strip all my work off to use this or can I wash and apply is my coat is already glass smooth?

    • @TheLastCoat
      @TheLastCoat  4 роки тому

      Feel free to do a basic wash (no wax based soaps) and no waxes, and then apply. The reason we show prep steps and the process to remove previous waxes is because with any sealant especially a ceramic based one, applying on a bare surface is best for the durability. But that said, many customers simply wash and apply as aesthetics are more important to them than durability.

    Which order do I go? TLC then black ice then amp?

    • @TheLastCoat
      @TheLastCoat  3 роки тому +3

      Since Black Ice requires a paint corrected, swirl-free surface, after the polishing process (if required) you would apply Black Ice to be your durable base layer. You would then allow Black Ice to cure for 7 days before applying TLC2 or AMP. At that time, you can then apply TLC2 and AMP for regular maintenance to help preserve and rebuild on the Black Ice layer.

TLC can be applied on chrome, glass, vinyl, leather, matte surfaces, rubber, denim paint, plastics, headlights, stainless steel, counter tops, wood, electronic screens, fiberglass, gel coat and most fabrics as well. It won’t artificially gloss matte and denim surfaces. On chrome and glass, use minimal amounts and when the surface is cool to the touch.

      Do not use wax for prepping the surface, nor to clean the vehicle after applying TLC. If used before applying to prep the surface, TLC will not be able to bond correctly to the surface as it is a ceramic-based product, and you may experience streaking. If used after applying TLC, due to TLC being so hydrophobic, it will shed the wax because The Last Coat is the real protection, and the wax may haze.

      Regarding using a clay bar for prepping the surface, this is a personal preference. But proper clay barring as the initial prep step will often give you the very best results out of TLC. On first application we highly recommend someone applying on as clean and bare a surface as possible.
      Step One: Wash your vehicle.( With The Last Soap or a soap with no wax added)
      Step Two: Decontaminate the paint surface with a clay mitt, clay bar or chemical removal.

    So, I just bought a new car and it has an added factory protection coating on it, but I'm not really satisfied with it. Would you suggest doing all the same prep work (clay bar, alcohol wipe) before using TLC2? Or should a wash be sufficient?
