It’s a great amp, and the concept is pretty unique and probably won’t be mimicked easily. I think the tweaks made with the Satriani version make it a better amp but the bare bones of it is a great sounding modern Marshall

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the 410h was a response to the Mesa RoadKing which had 4 channels and multiple power amp options.
While I'm not a "Marshall guy", I still think the Silver Jubilee is my favorite amp they've ever made. A different animal, I know, but man what a killer sound it has....

I've found that the green setting for the OD channels is really open and takes a boost well.
It's also interesting that each channel has both volume and gain in addition to the master volume for the whole amp. Having the channel volume up seems to help the tone.

  • @nekrovulpes
    @nekrovulpes 2 роки тому +25

Thing is these amps are for people who really like endless tweaking. It's basically four amps in one, each with 3 channels, and it will take a lot of trial and error to get them dialled in and find out which one works best for each tone you want. Once you figure it all out, though, it sounds amazing, and I can't think of another amp this versatile until you get to into the territory of stuff like the H&K Tri-Amp etc.
The clean and crunch channels are actually more of a Fender kind of sound, to my ears, lots of bass, and respond nicely to single coils. Meanwhile if you want the classic Marshall sound, you're better off running the OD channels with lower gain, like literally down at 2-3. You have to be very conservative with the resonance/presence too, especially on OD2. Also, it really, really likes EMGs.
I think the main reason it doesn't sound great in this video is that you didn't use a particular green OD pedal ;)

I tried multiple overdrives through it for my metallic hardcore band and couldn't let go of the SD-1. The texture and the savageness it provides is unmatched for me. Even though in some scenarios the sound was tighter with a Maxon OD-808, it never had the organic "full of life" effect the SD-1 has. Just my personal opinion though.

I think you haven't got the point. The Marshall JVM 410H and 410HJS have no competition regarding versatility in relation to the price point. No other amp has 4 channels and 12 sound modes for a price below 1500€/US$. No other full tube amp at this price point has the immense versatility AND sound quality of a JVM 410H. E.g.a EVH 5150 III can do one sound better (the 5150 sound), but cannot perform sounds in the ballpark of a plexi or 2203/2204 like the JVM 410 is able to. And the EVH does not offer the versatility in great clean tones like the JVM. Take any Mesa Boogie, and they can make some things better, but also do not offer the foot-switchable versatility of a JVM. In a studio maybe you can get similar versatile sounds out of a Mark V or so, but you have to fondle a lot while the JVM offers the versatility for the musician playing live via simple step on the foot switch. In Europe the JVM 410H costs roughly the same like an EVH 5150 III Stealth, but offers so much more versatility and so much more features (reverb etc.). If you do not need versatility but a good 5150 high gain sound, go for the EVH. If you like to play blues, clean parts, classic rock 2203 sounds AND good high gain sounds and many sounds in between, got for the JVM. The price is the same, the EVH is one trick or 2 tricks pony, while the JVM is a many tricks pony. Afaik only Engl offers amps that have a comparable versatility by foot switch, but these Engls cost much more than a 410H (suiting foot switch included).

I have the 210 which the same thing with only one of the OD channels, and I find that OD1 orange with a Boss SD-1 used as a clean boost makes it sound insane. I really like the cleans with the reverb setting on and a chorus pedal. The footswitch is the coolest thing about it because you can have like a million different presets or toggle reverb or volume boost on or off

I own a JVM215C for more than 12 years now, and I really think it is a must have in terms of versatility. After all these years, I found that you extract the most out of it with all EQs maxed out (this is the neutral mode by the way on any amp, not noon as EQs circuitry can just take sound away... think of it). The pre-amp volume knob is very sensitive, and if you want your amp to sound OK, you have to push it hard. The green mode on the clean channel is wonderful with a lot, really a lot, of power as it runs in pure class A mode. The overdrive modes/channels are a must, but you have to spend time to find the good sound. The orange mode will probably fit most tasks, as the red one is really meant for leads. Much more could be said about these, but for sure there is a lot of value for money here. If your preferred amp is a 5150 or equivalent, you will be possibly disapointed as these ones have a total different concept, with much more compression and much more bass.

    • @PippPriss
      @PippPriss 2 роки тому +1

You are not wrong with your equation on the EQ, but you don't take into account that the electronic design is eventually made the way that the best sound can be had with the knobs at 5, because the engineers know their customers are used to dialing amps these ways.

Kyle, these amps come biased super cold from factory (like 50mv per pair) which makes them sound kinda solid state-ish and harsh. Bring the bias up to 70mv per pair and it turns into a completely different beast, night and day difference! The mid character changes a lot and it becomes much less harsh in the upper mids and much more pleaseant sounding.

    • @scottdunn2178

I think Marshall were overcompensating for getting flamed for recommending 90mv for the DSL series (way too much current at idle) and red-plating the tubes. They probably figured too cold a bias was better than too hot.

I like that you gave the amp a chance, even if it's clearly not your thing. I love mine, but it's heavily modded. Before the mods I wasn't really happy with it either. Based on your demos it now sits between a stock JVM and the HJS, a bit closer to the latter. Through my V30/Greenback mix cab it sounds full and punchy, without being harsh or muffled. And works wonderfully in a band and live situation. But again... it's so subjective. I love your channel! Keep it up!

  • @dustinscott5628

You've kind of nailed what I have always thought of the JVM, very versatile, but hard for it not sound too harsh or too muffled. It also does seem to be missing something in the mids. I like it, its a great gigging amp because of all of the different options but it's kinda hard to dial.

I think you & I had touched on this one a couple of weeks ago, Kyle.
    Ahhh, the 410h.
Great cleans on Ch. 1 - certainly on the green mode. I had been playing it through a typical 1960A cab with G12T-75's, and every mode where distortion came along, it sucked. I tried EQ's all over the place, and it had an awful spike in the 1.7 to 2.1 Khz zone, and not nearly enough presence. When you boosted up the presence, it just turned into even more of a hot mess.
When using the orange and/or red modes on OD1 & OD2, the gain turns is into a flubbing mess when you go above 9 o'clock (just as this one was doing). Problem is - you can't get any balls out of it until you DO go above that setting.
So I'd read where if you stuck an ECC823 in V1, you'd get far less gain out of the distortion modes on OD's 1 & 2, but it would leave the distortion levels the same on the first two channels. The distortion on the OD channels was definitely less, and you can turn the gain up - getting more balls and smoothness. However, DO NOT DO THIS. I got two of the 823's and got 2 hours out of one tube and about 4 out of the other before they blew up. Both blew right in the middle of shows as well, so that pissed me off enough to go out and get a Peavey Invective (more on that later).
After it blew the second time, I brought it home, and hadn't touched for about a year. All new tubes in it, including KT77's in the output section. I wasn't going to start sticking mods in it, because if an amp is worth a shit, you shouldn't have to "mod" it at all.
I'd gotten a couple of V30's and stuck them in my cab, and really loved how much better they made my Invective sound, so I thought I'd try it with the JVM. First thing - I noticed the JVM sounded a good bit better. As I started tinkering with it, I found that if you set the presence up to 3 o'clock or higher, and turned the treble at ZERO (yes - all the way off) on the OD channels, that was a big help. Still - the lack of balls with the ECC83/12AX7's on the OD channels sucked. Finally, I found that if you run the gain on the GREEN modes on the OD channels WIDE OPEN, then you get the balls it lacked without flubbing out. When you stick a tube screamer behind those channels at that point, THEN you get a pretty damned good sound.
It's a really picky amp, and pretty frustrating as well.
The Invective can be pretty picky as well, but once you get IT figured out, then I'd say that it is definitely a better sounding amp than the JVM. You just have to tweak them. I use the OD crunch channel on it for leads (fattest, best lead sound I've ever gotten, and I have a Mk IIC+ as well), and use a low gain setting on its OD 2 channel for dirty rhythm. It doesn't lose the balls nearly as much as the JVM does at lower gain levels.
Anyways - I do need amps like these. I need an amp that gets LOUD cleans (need the headroom), and I need MIDI. Band I'm in is a jam band that goes between almost bluegrass to metal, so I need all the tones!
Sorry for the ramble, but hopefully this will help a few folks out...
Thanks (as always) for the review, Kyle!

I own and love a JVM, and I can tell you right now that something is happening with the sound of your amp 😄Orange mode on the OD-channels should be drowning in gain at 12 oclock and your guitar still sounded weak and barely saturating. Sounds like maybe something was severely decreasing the guitars volume before the amp, if not you might have a defective amp. I've never had the OD channels' gain above around 11 oclock on orange/red as there is just too much gain at that point. I recommend you get it checked out!

Had a real choke installed in mine, it is a first year with the floating knobs. Great amp, versatile. The JVM needs some tweaking, the cool part is a six button switch with a standard guitar cable. Gain below noon on all channels is enough. Give it some mids and treble. Use the presence as needed. Just upgraded to the JVM410H from the JVM210 in April, wish I had bought the flagship when they first came out when it was significantly more reasonably priced. The OD2 seems to be the OD channel of the 2 channel but I’m really liking the OD1 orange mode. How high are you running the volumes? I was creeping the channel volume up on the 2 channel up so high that I added an attenuator. Didn’t notice much of a difference in tone between that and the 4 channel at a comfortable level. Are you using a Digitech Drop pedal? My Les Pauls ‘57/‘57+ & burst buckers sound really good to me through the JVMs. The active EMG Jackson sounds good, Ibanez 7 with Bare Knuckle War Pigs & PRS with DW Mojotone Tomohawks sounds good as well, without redialing. The DiMarzio double humbucker equipped guitars sound good, but I do have to adjust things more than I like. Haven’t really been satisfied with any single coil pickups through the JVMs without a plethora of pedals. I really also wish that the JVM410H had a built in gate like the JS version, but had everything else the same.

    • @davej8045
      @davej8045 2 роки тому

@@Buica-4Thanks 🙏... Assuming that Marshall didn't change the tubes along the way, they should have been the same. (The 210 was made in '08 and the 410 in '21 so that could also come into play as they were original.) You can get really close to the same tones on the clean/crunch with redialing but it depends what you're after as there are distinct advantages to having 4 independent channels. A transparent boost may add more "warmth" and better shape the tone to make up for the difference but I haven't tried it myself. The 210 OD seems to be near identical to the OD2 of the 410. I think you could boost and shape the mids on the 210 to get it to be closer to OD1. (If the 410 only had one channel and gain mode, OD1 orange would be what I'd go for...JCM 800-ish) Different tubes could have more of an impact with the JVM than just EQ and boost alone but I personally don't have any experience in that area. My Mesa can use 3 different sets of tubes and it does drastically change the tonal character. I bought a few other amplifiers that have a better "feel" to me than the 210 but decided to try the 410 before possibly abandoning the JVMs. (Chasing tone down the rabbit hole, again.) I got by without a noise gate for the 210 but the 410 has one in the effects loop to make better use of all that gain on tap.

Hello Kyle! Great video as always and really like your reviews and style doing them!
Just wanted to say that I had this JVM410h for a few years, when I wanted to jam again I looked for used head+cabs and found a good deal on one! And as I say when people ask me about it on how good is it I just say that "Its the worlds OKayest amp" hahah. The thing about it is that it doesnt cost 4k$ as my Mark V + Mesa cab, its really easy to get good tones and its built like a tank and for the $1200 used or 2000 new you can get it with the typicall Marshall 1960A cab cant ask more! I really like it, I usually push the Crunch channel with the Boss SD1 or the Boss BD1 to get some sparkly highs and mids, even though if you push the treble, volume and presence it opens up but still. And the OD1 Orange mode can also be really sick, pushed or not.
All in all, is as I say the Worlds okayest amp, it deals really good cleans for the gigs, crunch and overdriven tones, takes pedals really good, its easy to dial and works really well with the Marshall 1960 cabs. Also, I tried it with the Mesa with V30s and didnt like that mutch and I found something weird on the mids too... I think it really shines with the G12s from Marshall, its still on the warmer side but mutch better.
Anyway, Im not saying that you need to try that, really like that you try different heads with the same equipment and thats the way to really give a true idea of the sound. Cya!

I don't bond with these amps much either. my favorite one is the 20 watt with el34s. I bought the revv Shawn tubb pedal a couple weeks ago. I got to say I use everywhere I go now. that high pass filter with the tilt eq and the clean boost 👌. I have had the mxr graphic eq on my board for years, And with changing cabs, mics, and amps constantly. I would sit and play around with the mxr forever. Not anymore. The revv is just so fast to dial in, and if I don't want to use the boost and only the tilt, I can, just put your favorite boost in front with the eq no problem. Most of the time I don't want more distortion or Saturation, I just want to make it the low end tight. and it does it so well. my orange OR50, framus cobra, dragon, and my schecter hellwin. I can get the low under control no problem. Great showing of Marshall no matter if you love it or hate. good job bro.

Hey man, great channel! I’m a newcomer and dig the whole bag going on here.
Whilst I am conflicted, this might be the perfect opportunity to rag on the JVM410H. This was my old band mate’s prized new amp, and he thought it was the cats pyjamas. Dare it not be criticised!
It did have a few good and usable sounds across all channels, very usable clean & edge of break up tones.
But… well, as you said, it’s incredibly hard to balance out the eq on those high gain channels. OD 1 & 2 always sounded too ‘closed’ and thin and…just underwhelming wherever chugs were required. Perhaps a Boss DS1 or similar boost would have opened things up, as you had it sounding towards the end on OD2. Rant over. To be fair, my tone was far from perfect!
Anyways keep up the great work and thank you! 🍻

The only way that I've been able to tame the high end annoying brightness is to turn up the gain, which brings up the thump of the amp as well. After that an od pedal will keep it from collapsing the low end.
The mid and the presence controls seem to do almost the same thing. The bass does almost nothing at all settings.
    Just my experience.

I have a DSL40 and I do wish each of the 4 channels had their own EQ. Well, this amp is what I am looking for in that respect. This is way more amp than I will ever need though. Oh well. More than anything, putting a compression in the front of the amp and an EQ in the back, it really wakes up the overdrives without an overdrive pedal. Maybe this amp would benefit as well.
Growing up, it was always do you want Marshall or Modern? The OD2 sounds like a combination of both, but not truly hitting the end points of a JCM800 or a Rectifier. It's always going to be somewhere in between. If someone just wants a fully pushed and modded 800 2203, then they're just going to have to go get a modded 800 2203 and push it. If they want a more "modern" sounding amp like a Rectifier. Then they're going to have to go get a Rectifier. I don't think either group will ever be truly happy with this amp. This does sound like an amp for those who like to tweak EQ knobs and get a million different sounds. Or you can be like this guy and have 25 different amps stacked up behind you to get those 25 unique sounds. To each their own.

I play a Fender AVRI '62 Jazzmaster (not exactly high gain pickups), and the amber channels have more gain that I could ever need, with the red channels being an ungodly amount of gain. "there is just kind of a thinness in the upper mids that I can't really get along with"
    *presence at 9*
    Dude, Marshalls just work differently.
First of all, the gain knob also works as a filter - gain below 5 = cuts off the bass, gain above 5 = cuts off the highs
Second, the master eq (presence and resonance) is ADDING things to the sound. I record my JVM with presence and resonance off (to 0), that way it's the most balanced amp I've ever heard, the high gain tones are super angry but at the same time it feels like super soft pillows, so nice.
By the way your Les Paul really has an incredibly low output, according to manual, the green crunch is modeled after JTM45 and the orange crunch is supposed to be JCM800. For those cases I recommend getting a Boss EQ pedal or another way you could adjust the volume of your guitar going to the amp

@@Thegamer12342 neither is a JCM800 but it still sounds wicked. I'd like to see Kyle work his magic on the EQ on the Jubilee as it is very sensitive and he has some awesome OD pedals.

For that amp, maybe you have the wrong--- or not exactly right---
    ---guitar,
    ---pickups,
    ---speakers,
    ---strings,
or some combination of them for your tastes.
I had one and liked it fine for a variety of styles and sounds. No matter which guitar I used I could always find a sound I liked for it in that head. For high gain I like 300 watt EVMs the best. The clean channel is close but not exact with a JTM45. That has 5881s and the JVM 410H has EL34s. The 5881s are smooth as glass so you let your other junk handle the distortion. An MXR multi band EQ might "fix" the issues you cite as your personal preferences.
Very good video though; no wasted time on nonsense.

I had one and really liked it. I no longer have the amp but thought it was a great package. Marshalls do metal, just in a Marshall way. Obviously bands like Slayer, Megadeth, John 5 (Rob Zombie) still use Marshall amps.

BLS as well! Yeah I like the beefy Marshall tone better compared to Mesas or the 5150s/6505s I like all those amps but like the chunkier Marshall tone. I fine the Mesas are tricky to EQ and can have a bit of a fizz to them. The 5150s/6505 have a more darker tonality which is cool but not for me. My buddy's play them and they have awesome tone, just not my personal style.

Ive had a JVM410H for 6 years atleast. Mine doesn't sound like yours in the video.....Now I am running KT77's in the power section, but even on EL34's it had more oopmh than yours in this video for some reason. For instance, red on the crunch with a boost is Monstrous on mine......fat as hell. (of course its a Maxon st9 pro+ so maybe that is it?)
