This was a surprise, especially as it isn't recognised as a Neil Diamond song, and will no doubt be more associated with Susan Boyle other than a major song in the film version of Victor Hugo's novel Les Miserables, however, once again you have hit the mark, the song fits perfectly with the stunning images from the film. The song was sung by Anne Hathaway's character Fantine, a desperate plea for a better existence beyond living as part of the Parisian underclass.
The uniqueness of Neil Diamond's interpretation is his ending offers hope, where he sings, "life can't kill the dream I dreamed" whereas the original lyric, as quoted directly below the video is a surrender to the life she was living. Les Miserables is a dark narrative of the squalid existence of many in Paris in the 1800's, which led to the uprising, and the French revolution, the story is a veritable history lesson. Whilst watching one can actually feel the desperation via the stark images, and the sense of loss and defeat, but there is hope via the rebellion, which gives hope for the future.
The inclusion of the "Song of the Whales Fanfare" at the beginning sets the tone wonderfully, it builds anticipation, and expectation, an inspired touch, I have always liked that piece of music. The video is another wonderful inclusion to your library of great video's, a great upload.
My old age vocabulary is not nearly as good as yours Dave but I agree with every word you wrote in regard to this beautiful video creation. Thank you :)

Unsure just where the inspiration to include 'Song of the Whales (Fanfare)' came from as this video has nothing to do with whales. Guess even Neil would be surprised if indeed he were to, on the off-chance, stumble upon this video.😲 I just came it me... and I was hooked. That said, I'm glad I did include it, as it afforded me the opportunity to, as you so aptly put it, "set the tone wonderfully" and "build the anticipation and expectation" for the actual, incredible song. Thank you Neil, for your gift of song and continued inspiration.

@@8617000 Hi Sandy, it is indeed a beautiful video. The Film Les Miserables is a powerful story of poverty and decline, as well as control in Paris in the 1800's, it is a stark tale of the deprivation of the underclasses of that era, which brought about the French revolution.
Doug is a master of creation, his video's are above the norm of what is usually found on UA-cam, and fit entirely with the story he is telling via the music he uses. It is a great honour for me to work with Doug on the Website, where I believe between us we have created something lasting as a tribute to the immensely talented Neil Diamond.

I had seen this song performed a couple of times in New York but when I saw Anne Hathaway perform it on screen it was like I had never heard it before. I fully understand why she nailed the Oscar as Best Supporting Actress. It's a powerful song and you could see it in Anne's performance.

Great the choice of the images, Neil is always Neil in one word :fantastic. A good idea the window opened on the hope, a small chance in the original text that make the difference between a singer and a poet. Great job Doug.

Hi Doug, don't know how I missed this! Something else I discovered today was a single studio version was released just after HAN2 in 1987. There are a number of clips on YT. As always, the great man delivers and like you say, turns this memorable song to one of hope. Cheers Paul
I forgot to mention after thinking about it that there's more to ND than singing "Sweet Caroline" in sports stadia around the world. The world needs to be educated about the greatest singer / songwriter ever! Perhaps Doug we should start a new wave with another from the ND repertoire.....Cracklin' Rosie?
