The music is still 100% black metal. They just don't look and dress like the long-haired, corpsepainted Europeans of the 1990s-2000s. And they don't have to. My hair is two feet long, but that doesn't mean theirs has to be. They're still fucking metal.
I like the vocalist. His what he chooses to wear in all their shows, hair, voice, delivery and stage presence. Its refreshing and heartfelt. Original Black Metal. Oh Shit.
Lots of Hipsters jumping on the Black Metal scene and trying to reinvent it. I've been listing to Black metal from the beginning and I embrace the change to some extant. Anything that stays the same for years eventually needs to change because it will eventually get boring. Give props to bands like "Dark Throne" and "Bathory" and lets see what the new generation of musicians have to offer. EMBRACE CHANGE AND DON'T BE CLOSE MINDED :)
Strange, here I was thinking that a discussion about a band would be about music, not their attire. It's pretty easy guys, if you are so distracted by the sight of a skinny jean just move along, there is plenty of "correctly" dressed bands music for you to "listen" to out there.
Black Metal also means individuality... now tell me, how individual are people with corpsepaint, ammunition belts and leather pants in the Black Metal scene?
Man you should give an ear to real screamo bands from the 90's... Sure the drumming is black metal (but is it the best thing in this genre???). It reminds me of Envy, Finger Print, ABC Diabolo.
Just because you're into an unorthodox or extreme form of music doesn't mean you have to dress like a skank... or dress at all. Although, I do like the left handed drummer's Brainoil t-shirt.
@YouthClash screamo influence? are you talking about the vocals... they seems more black metal. sorry but screamo is way below this type of music just my opinion.
What a funny genre, it used to be people you looked up to telling you "that's not punk," or whatever. Now mom's basement-dwelling waifs in corpse paint wield the axe, "that's not black metal." Cracks me the fuck up, every time. Ever seen a fight at a black metal show?
Aren't kvlters the ultimate hipsters though? Pertaining to styles only other kvlt kids thinks is cool and "normal" people wouldn't understand the kvltness?
What does attire have to do with authenticity of expression. The lead singer is a bit hardcore/screamo delivery for me, but the music is still good. No one slighted Ian Curtis for wearing dress shirts tucked into dress slacks, who gives a shit about clothes, music is about expression, right?
They sound more like a screamo band to me. Screamo as in there's a dude in front of the band wearing a Pg.99 shirt. Yes, that very loose usage of a term since people don't light getting knocked off of their blackened high horses.
And you're a 100% right. I don't know from where people get this shit that to enjoy music you have to wear clothes like this or like that, or have a lot of tattoos, or anything else. I can walk around wearing a fucking tweed outfit, a greasy hair and yuppie glasses. I you still listen to and like the music I want. If you don't, I'm sorry about your little head.
and when I see such guys - with such clothes and "sweet" faces (I'm not talking about corpsepaints)) .. everything is .. ok with them (hope you understand what I'm talking about) and you know - I can't trust them, I have a feeling that they don't know what they are playing about. I'm not saying that they have to wear black leather clothes, paint their faces white and pray to Satan. But... playing black metal in such way is something like when people from europe is trying to play reggae.
who cares what that is and what those guys wear . . . ? It is pop, it is rock, it is punk and what ever hard forms of music might be called . . . I am happy not understanding most of all the words, which gives me an apprentice (not any bad means) Yamatsuka Eye. And most of all . . . they "rock" live and in the studio . . . it's romantic . . . probably not for everyone . . . but that is of no interest.
I think it's fine if they want to play black metal music but don't care to maintain a 14yr-olds aesthetic in how they look. Just judge the music for what it is. And that's where I dislike them: the music is superduper subpar black metal.
no low end. figures. Boring. Theyre fine until they start playing to the black metal tropes. Then its boring. Not to mention the hoarse vocals. Theres no power to them.
The guitarist is my cousin :)
the vocalist has a very special aura...he is diferent
i was doin shots of vodka with George after they played with Russian Circles last in Dublin...absolute gent of a guy
This is what they do. If you like it buy into it, if not move on. Easy.
The music is still 100% black metal. They just don't look and dress like the long-haired, corpsepainted Europeans of the 1990s-2000s. And they don't have to. My hair is two feet long, but that doesn't mean theirs has to be. They're still fucking metal.
i was working while this set happened.
:-(
but i got to say hi after the set.
:-)
don't miss these guys they are awesome!!!
Beautiful music . This band rules .
"WAIT THEY'RE NOT WEARING CORPSE PAINT THIS ISN'T KVLT"
I hate humanity.
Bassist is using a Fender Squire Jag bass. Props to him. You don't always need thousands of dollars in equipment to put ona fantastic show. Kudos.
I like the vocalist. His what he chooses to wear in all their shows, hair, voice, delivery and stage presence. Its refreshing and heartfelt. Original Black Metal. Oh Shit.
Violet
heh when i saw that deafheavens set was 25 minutes i was like what? did they only play like 2 songs?
Great quality, thanks for sharing.
I play in a Black Metalband, and I don't where corpsepaint and all that shit..
Music is music.
This is amazing. Thank you so much.

Best black metal since Mayhem
i love this band so much! in april i will see them live in berlin!.. :)
WOW guyss!! awsome band and good job! I love your music alot
This band kills.
Good stuff. Really like this style.
At ~3:57 it looks like the vocalist spits on one guy, who just kinda smiles afterward. lol.
awesome live congratulations. .
this is delicious, those hipsters really know how to make fucking sublime music
This is fucking 'Post- Black Metal' or 'Blackgaze'; Not 'Trve Black Metal'
This is better.
AMAZING VIDEO
Holy fuck! this is fuckin' awesome!
@CAvis3208 Do you have the track list by chance?
Awesome band!
@xvitaleyesx Personally, I'm sitting at my computer desk in full corpse paint. I think that makes me a black metal expert.
This is a realy good show ! The atmosphere is here, don't care about their looks...
best live band
yeah Will!
@TheSolarCompromise exactly. exactly. exactly. exactly. i fucking love you.
How are they making that weird droning/waling undertone? is that just pedal work?
9:43 - man with black hairs. "not bad!"
That's the whole fucking point!
@FloodPL Nothing says out of touch in 2012 like telling Deafheaven's drummer to keep practicing via UA-cam comment.
Can someone tell me the chord/s at 10:46
that riff is ill as

Oh my god the singer is Win Butler
Some would go as far as to call this stuff "post-black metal" ._. I'm not sure what to think of that
They actually have screamo influinces that most people ignore.
Black Metal also means individuality... now tell me, how individual are people with corpsepaint, ammunition belts and leather pants in the Black Metal scene?
@ismamis66:Could be worse. He could be a person that judges someone off their appearance rather than knowing them personally(AKA you).
@TheSolarCompromise Amen to that.
shake off the shackles of genre and listen to what's underneath
@thesearewarningsigns The one with black hair and glasses
this part of that positive black metal movement?
why is everyone just standing there??
@FloodPL simplicity is commendable dude, over tech, metalcore drumming is masturbation
joyce manor t-shirt spotted
That's Biggie's 'Ready to Die' in the back.
ruptures
Who cares what genre it is? It's good fucking music, can't we just leave it at that?
isn't that Leonard from "The Big Bang Theory" playing the guitar?
!!!
@azoneiybelial Are you implying Black Metal isn't a suburban thing to begin with? It's not like Black Metal literally spawned out of the woods.
before they started I thought they would suck. But they're pretty sweet
yeah I know right? The same stuff applies to hardcore punk
just magnificent! all your disputes about the genres are ridiculous. it's music. like it or not.
@watson424 lol he is rather...dapper for this genre.
Man you should give an ear to real screamo bands from the 90's... Sure the drumming is black metal (but is it the best thing in this genre???). It reminds me of Envy, Finger Print, ABC Diabolo.

i wonder what these guys look like without all the corpsepaint
@YouthClash screamo influence? are you talking about the vocals... they seems more black metal. sorry but screamo is way below this type of music just my opinion.

haters gonna hate.
100 % black metal ? no.. cuz it's obviously post-rock influenced
errr....WHAT?
They sound more like a screamo band to me. Screamo as in there's a dude in front of the band wearing a Pg.99 shirt. Yes, that very loose usage of a term since people don't light getting knocked off of their blackened high horses.
Truly great band........ Fuck elitism. Why hide behind a dead gimmick when you can just create sublime music?
^Hipster
Black Metal night at Starbucks
nice, good stuff. but more technique in drumming. keep practice.
Its not that new. Its just black metal drumming with hoarser vocals and more reverb on the guitars.
WHAT! A black metal band who dresses normal and doesn't ooze of pretentiousness? I'm down..
i like listening to these guys but hate to watch them.
and when I see such guys - with such clothes and "sweet" faces (I'm not talking about corpsepaints)) .. everything is .. ok with them (hope you understand what I'm talking about) and you know - I can't trust them, I have a feeling that they don't know what they are playing about. yes, they sounds good, I agree.
but
black metal is music of protest.
Playing black metal and still looking fab? Scandinavian clown supply-investments will plumet if this gets too popular...
Great band, but I'm not a fan of their haircuts haha.
yep, music for hipsters... but still good
I think it's fine if they want to play black metal music but don't care to maintain a 14yr-olds aesthetic in how they look. Just judge the music for what it is. And that's where I dislike them: the music is superduper subpar black metal.
It's way too easy to make this. How about this: I'll go out, and buy a drum set (not even a full one), then just hit the snare, and high hat fast.
hipsters gone hip :D
no low end. figures. Boring. Theyre fine until they start playing to the black metal tropes. Then its boring. Not to mention the hoarse vocals. Theres no power to them.
this is gross
i hate liturgy. Deafheavens amazing though. i hate how sloppy there drummer is live though.
Awful growls. They sound nasal and weak.
yeah they were black metal.. until I saw them dur dur dur blah
hipster metal, this isn' t black metal anymore...they sound good but it' s not black metal at all for me.
scream with such kind of clothes. .. it's disgusting
Regardless of whether you consider it black metal or not, the one thing we can all agree on is that it is terrible.
