      It's the whistling after the book line and the sideways glance at the audience which gets me. Victoria knows it's the funniest line in the song, and she's going to milk it...

    She created her own league, a cut above every other comedian, and she stayed up there, and probably still will until all of us are dead. Never replaceable, never to be surpassed. RIP, Victoria, None shall ever be missed as much as you.

    I adore Victoria Wood, I remember finding her vhs videos in the front room when I was about 9, hooked ever since. She is the queen of comedy.

      @@nettils5555 I'm sure you're right and I apologise for wasting your time with a story which I found amusing and indicative of Ms Woods' character. Thank you for pointing out the error of my ways - I have seen the light and have erased all affection I ever had for her. She wasn't all that good, was she ? Just a bloody chancer. Thank God more level heads stopped her making a fool of herself.

    She truly was one of life's observers, then used her observations in her work.

      @ no, and I was aware that line wasn’t ok. But I put in the context that a) this was in the ‘80s and b) she was singing a character, not as herself. But no I didn’t like that line. But the rest of the song felt worth ignoring that

      @@Mishima505 just here to say Adolf Hitler is four syllables and doesn’t work in the slightest. It’s more than that… it’s very clever it both “sounds” funnier and is the type of character detail she nails all the time. Pam would abhor Hitler… but Mussolini he was ok.

      To me, the archetypal Victoria Wood line is "no woman over forty suits a mauve string vest" as it has that perfect coincidence of the surreal with the everyday that marks out her genius with the English language and social observation.
