So glad you're back! My grandfather was a pipe smoker but he passed away before I was born. I inherited his pipe collection a few years ago and I can't thank you enough for the knowledge you've passed on. You've helped grow a connection with my past and my family, it means the world to me. From mine to yours, happy piping!

I agree with you. I used to shake the ash in the bowl before emptying the pipe, but I found that the carbon cake formed was too fragile, and would come away in whole chunks. Just letting it build up naturally has worked well for me with all my pipes, and I would suggest doing it this way every time! Thanks for the video, Mutton!

Iam new here and I absolutely love your videos/ tutorials. I recently purchased a Pipe and some sampler packs of Aromatics with the guidance of your teachings and comments left by fellow subscribers. I also have stumbled across "George Bruno's" channel, and so far I have been enjoying Piping.
Thanks again Mutt-N-Chop Piper, I look forward to more of your video's.
By the way, I have yet to find the need to ream out the carbon cake from my bowl, but your Carbon Cake reamer kit looks like a sturdy set up!. 🇺🇸👍

Another well blended video full of tasty notes of knowledge. In my experience, the best way to build up carbon cake is just to keep smoking. Burley blends are also great for building up cake. To keep cake build up down, lightly scape the bowl out after every use. Been doing that for years now and have no need for a pipe reamer.

Watched almost all of your videos before I took the dive. I started my first smoke with a cob because I wasn’t confident in the baskets I was offered.
I caved and bought a Rossi Rubino Antico (8404). I haven’t experienced any tongue bite. I’ve spent the last few weeks piping and listening to Merry and Pippin’s “The Friendship Onion” podcast. Highly recommend it.
Thanks for the education. I’ve enjoyed listening to you. Even if I don’t do this forever, you’ve made this experience everything. Thank you for that. 🤘🏻

    Mr. Muttnchop,
Please accept my deep gratitude for your most generous efforts at improving the pipe smoking experience for thousands around the world. I'd come to pipe smoking from cigar smoking, been enjoying it now for several years. As a young kid - the 60's - I'd seen several older family and acquaintances smoking pipes. And when I picked it up, decades after their passing, I enjoyed it - most of the time - but always thinking in the back of my head... I think I'm doing this wrong, it's not the cadence I remember, this seems like a lot of hot steam. I'd been smoking my pipes like they were cigars, relighting frequently to maintain a cigarlike volume of smoke. Your tutorials on the "breathing method" have perfected my enjoyment and transported me back to my Grand Uncles hearth in Ballyhaunis, and their relaxed, seemingly endless bowls enjoyed in cracked and abused Shamrocks.
    You are appreciated.
    Kind Regards,
    Gerry Birmingham

I'm 25 years old, used to smoke a pack a day of Marlboro Menthol.
I just bought my first corncob pipe last week and some War Horse Green, and I now only smoke 1 to 3 cigarettes a day.
I've gotten to a point where I prefer the pipe and only smoke cigs to ease my chemical addiction, and I'm glad to say I am very close to quitting them entirely.
I'd like to thank you, Muttnchop, for making it so easy for me to do it all properly, and being so wholesome and kind and transparent without any nonsense the entire time.

Every video of yours has been exceptionally helpful and instructive. Thank you so much for your efforts. This was a perfectly timed video for me to find… although I didn’t receive notification of it at the time of posting. I took up pipe smoking in December 2020. Prior to that I had rediscovered a collection of pipes from my late grandfather. None of my living relatives have any memory of Grandpa smoking a pipe. Thanks to your guidance I am working through cleaning and testing each pipe. Several have a thick carbon cake, but none of the cakes are intact. After a few experimental attempts to remove them, much remains because I was afraid of being too aggressive. A pocketknife is not something I would have considered using. I will take your advice and give it a try. Thanks again!

Welcome back, excellent advice on reaming. Your four part reamer is one of the best I have found. The other design that I really like is the three sided blade reamer available from Phil Rivara, it seems to give me better control on shaping the cake exactly as I like it. Being in the retail pipe business you can imagine correctly that I have seen cake so thick that one cannot even fit your little finger into the opening. Of course as you also know if you let that cake build up to that extent you run the risk of cracking the bowl wide open as the cake expands at a different rate than the briar bowl interior. Great advice and again welcome back!. Keep puffin.

I always listen to your videos twice. Once for the info, then another time because somehow I find them very relaxing. 🙂
Oh and thanks for the tip! I own four pipes and am not a regular smoker, so the cake builds up pretty slowly. I did have to remove some recently on my two first pipes. I just used the scoop thing on a Czech tool… seemed to work fine! I was very careful and the cake didn’t chip. But… I’ll definitely look out for chipping next time, thanks to you! Although I can see how the tool you’re using is probably better to do a more “equalized” job.
Keep em coming and thanks again Chris!

I needed to see this video. In particular, I needed to hear that there's as much variation in people's carbon-cake build-up preferences as there are in pipe smokers and I need to find the level of build-up that works for me.
Also helpful is your explanation as to why, when I've reamed my pipes, parts of the cake I've so carefully built-up breaks off. I'm going to follow suit now and let the burning tobacco do the good work of protecting my pipe instead of adding ash to it to encourage cake growth.
Thank you, my friend. And happy piping!

  • @johnwayne2260
    @johnwayne2260 2 роки тому +5

I just smoke it then when the tobacco has been spent, I just stir it up with the created condensation and let it sit and cool then dump it out. I’ve found it also helps hold the flavor in the bowl as well…

  • @Yornick

It might seem like a heresy to some, but I usually stuff an alcohol-soaked tissue (the ones used for sterilizing injection sites) for an hour or so and then scrape the cake out with a Czech tool.
And yes, it sure is a joy to see you posting again. :)

I was taught the honey technique when I first picked up a pipe as a 20-year-old , and I always liked it because the first few smokes were sweeter. I have not noticed tear out but have been moving away from this technique because I hear so many people do.
For years, I just used the spoon to clear the excess cake, so maybe it happened, and I wasn't experienced enough to notice.

First of all thank you for your videos! They have helped my in so many ways.
I am not aware if you read the comments but I had a burning question and I thought I give it a shot.
In one of your previous videos you talked about that when you here a "gulping" sound when smoking your pipe you need to put a pipecleaner as quickly as possible before the tabacco leaves a sour taste. My question with this is how do you do that with a filter in your pipe? I know you also use pipefilters but I am curious how you handle that kind of situations.

I prefer the Senior pipe reamer to the T-handle or the blade/knife.
It’s adjustable, and you never get caught between sizes like you do with the t-handle.
It’s also more forgiving and consistent than a knife.
