NO To Necas, The Canucks Should Target These Wingers Instead!

    At the season-ending press conference, Patrik Allvin announced his intention of adding another top-six winger. He is also looking to add speed to his roster. For months, the Canucks have been linked to Martin Necas of the Carolina Hurricanes, an RFA looking to cash in. I would advise the Canucks to steer clear of Necas, and in this video, I provide three alternatives.

    I think one of the main reasons why ppl are so high on Necas is that he fits our timeline so well. He is a 25yo C/RW who is 1yr removed from a 71 point season. Although he regressed to 53 points this year, that was all while playing 3rd line minutes with Drury and Martinook. He's fast, can shoot, and super creative with the puck. Although he is not necessarily a shut down defender, I think the notion that he is a defensive liability is a bit of an exaggeration. I agree that he does sometimes have defensive gaffes here and there but in no way would I say that he is a liability playing in the top 6.
    All the other guys you mentions although good (and likely cheaper) are all pretty much in their 30s (minus Ehlers). We obviously want this team to be competitive for as long as possible and I think having Necas gives you the option down the line to move Miller to the wing if he starts to regress (I still think he'll be solid for at least another 3-4 years) and run a tandem of Petey and Necas. I don't think his cap hit will be that much of an issue given that the caps only going to go up every year. What may seem like a 7.5m dollar player now may be more like a 5.5-6m dollar player a year or 2 from now.
    I also think he has a huge potential to breakout playing with Petey. He never gets to play with Aho or Svech aside from the PP and still puts up respectable numbers. Sorta reminds me of JT miller in Tampa. And it's not like Miller was great defensively when he first got here so I definitely think Necas can grow in that department too.

    Necas has shown during the WC24 that he has great potential if given the chance. The Swedish team full of NHL stars was handled like a kids and a lot of people said that his true colors were greatly restricted by Carolina's style of play, I would not be surprised to see him hit 100 points in teams like Panthers, Oilers, Leafs or Predators.
    But its also trues that if you are looking for a more defensive player or power forward, you should probably look elsewhere, he is more speed/skill player than power/battleforthepuck that you need for Petterson right now.

    Necas is more than a 53 point player. Example: The worlds tournament 4 games played 6 points. Small sample, I know. The system in Carolina limits his potential, it prioritizes zone possession and defense. It is too ridgid and doesn't mesh with his game well. He could perform much better somewhere else that will allow him much more creativity and feature him on a first line. Disclaimer: I am a Canes fan, I have watched him play a lot.

    • @Eleutherios1
      @Eleutherios1 27 днів тому +1

      Ya .. he's more like a 40 point player. People are way overrating the guy. He was 30.. 40..40...70..50 To me the 70 looks like an anomaly. A 4 game tournament doesn't trump a 5+ year sample size and there is nothing special in his game. He is not an elite top 6 winger.. or even a particularly good one. And he isn't a good defensive center and is abysmal at FO's. He is literally Hoglander level and Hogs is younger and a lot cheaper. If they are going to go out and spend on an elite winger for petersson then do it.. but get someone that actually fits the bill and isn't in their 30's

    Unless trading Hronek allows the canucks to free up cap space then a trade seems pointless as forwards are more easily obtained thorough free agency without giving up assets.
    Then they need would to find a replacement for Hronek.
    The whole point of trading him is to free up cap space so they can re-sign guys like Joshua and Zadorov.
    If that doesnt happen I'm of the opinion that it would be better to find a fair deal to re-sign him.

      Based on the AFPA projections of what players will earn, there is easily enough money to ice the same team as last year sans Lindholm and Cole, but including Hronek, Z, Blueger, Joshua, Myers, Silovs, a 13th F and 7th D.
      Buyout Mikheyev and there is 6.9 million with which to obtain a winger for Petey. Trade Mikheyev+ (perhaps a rebuilding team will retain some of his salary for picks while a competing team with need for a middle-six forward takes over his contract) and now we're talking a bit under 8.1 million.
      That's all assuming the AFPA projections bear some resemblance to future reality, but also that nobody takes a discount. If Allvin can convince some FAs to come back for slightly less than what the AFPA projections tell us, we could be in 8.5-9.5m territory. That's starting to look like enough to acquire a RD with a bit more pedigree than Juulsen to play with Zadorov _and_ a high quality UFA winger like Teravainen or Toffoli.
      That's just me typing from my armchair, and I highly doubt it'll play out like this, but the point is to illustrate that I believe your instinct is bang-on: signing Hronek for 7.5-8 is not as bad as a lot of columnists and fans are making it out to be. There are clicks to be had in anxious fans who believe there is no cap space, and a steady stream of articles about potential buyers/returns for Hronek.

    • @jacksonjacob7791
      @jacksonjacob7791 27 днів тому

      @@ratiquette getting rid of Mikheyev would be extremely helpful. If they can't trade him, I'm hoping ownership bites the bullet and buys out his contract.
      He isn't good enough offensively to play in the top 6 and doesn't even kill penalties. So he's really not very helpful in any way presently.
      Getting rid of him may be completely necessary to even make the playoffs next season.
      What is your opinion on re-signing Myers? Because it appears he would be willing to play at a reduced rate.
      I'd also love to see Tanev return. And the Canucks players would love that. And he may be open to coming back. I heard he was hopeful to be traded to Vancouver at the deadline.
      I'm also wondering if Lindholm would make sense to re-sign instead of a winger, then moving Petterson to the wing on either the first or 2nd line.
      Although Lindholm did turn down an 8x8 contract with Calgary before. And will have teams like Boston trying very hard to sign him.
      I think a priority should really be for players who will maintain or improve their special teams since that really hurt them in the playoffs.
      Toffoli sould help their power play. Tanev would help their PK. The Canucks really needs to be cautious and not allow their penalty kill to regress to where it was 2 seasons ago.

    • @ratiquette
      @ratiquette 27 днів тому

      @@jacksonjacob7791 Yeah, I like keeping Myers. Even at the projected cap hit of 3.1 I think it’s worth the money, but I imagine he might do something more along the lines of 2.5-2.8.
      Tanev is great, and it would be a good story, but I think he would have to accommodate the team’s cap situation beyond what is reasonable to expect from him. For me - and I fully recognize this is a long shot - Chatfield is the ideal fit at RD for the term and price he should command. Then you have Myers and Soucy expiring in 2 years with EPD and Willander as candidates to step in.
      I felt the same way about Lindholm at first, but I think the price is too high. The winger class at free agency has a lot of good candidates for that line who will come at lower cap hits.
      Regarding special teams, a season can make a big difference. I think they _will_ add players who can help on the PP, but I also think they have some very clear places where they can improve through conditioning and mindset changes. The Sedin era team got a lot better at stuff like this over the years and the only major top six guy they added during that time was Samuelsson.
