    Once again an Awesome video! I'm always amazed at how easy you make it look and the way you heated the gear up and it worked out so well! GREAT JOB!

    Similar to the old GS series. Bought a size 12 Squall casting special and have two 535 GS that I’ve been maintaining in good condition for years. Had a frozen pinion gear on a 345 GTI and crunched it with pliers even though I wrapped it in steel wool to protect the teeth. Fortunately Mystic Reel Parts still has spares for some of the older reels and because Penn uses common components across many models old and new I like Penn reels. They may not be buttery smooth like Shimano but they are tough fishing tools with lower up front cost of purchase and lower total lifecycle cost as well.

      Me too, but I've used it a few times and have a little experience there. Hopefully I don't burn the shop down! Dennis

    Looks like a cute little Chinese Penn. I’m looking forward to a few more spinning reels but I’m in no way complaining! I have those Craftsan ignition wrenches. I use them especially on the big Luxor reels. If that spool shaft was stainless would it have rusted like that? Freeing that pinion was impressive. With my limited vision there is no way I’ll ever use a torch. I have a very small precise torch I sometimes use but I can handle that ne. I use it to heat circle hooks and coat them with powder paint. Then I bake the hooks in the oven. My wife doesn’t like that very much! I use a bottle I bought that has a two inch ti on it. I fill it u with Penn oi and that’s what I use. I think this was a very impressive repair and service. You proved again your experience and skill! What a great job.

      Chris - go and get a toaster oven from WalMart. They are cheap and it keeps the wife happy! I use one when I do the powder coating of Jigs - Dennis

    Mine wouldn't engage the anti-reverse, this helped me get in there and clean it up a bit. Luckily it works after the rebuild.

    Dennis, Ithink you may have made one harder for yourself - the Fathom II and Squall II reels have fast access (right) side plates in that the RH plate is assembled with the main gear and drag as a unit. Pinion stays on the spool shaft. You only need to remve the 4 outside screws to get to the internals.

    Dennis, do you have any videos showing the parts and servicing of the reel tension knob? I'd like to understand how it functions. Thanks!

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  6 місяців тому

      I do not. The tension know butts to the spool shaft end. When you tighten it that puts more pressure on the shaft and slows the spool. When you back it off, it reduces the tension and allows the spool to turn more freely - Dennis

    Awesome video..,I’m a beginner so I was wonder about the dog and the spring for the anti-reverse it didn’t seem to have one am I correct ?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  3 роки тому +1

      Corect Ray. This reel uses the Anti-reverse roller bearing clutch instead of a dog and spring - Thanks for the note - Dennis

    Very similar to my fathom casting special.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 місяці тому +1

      Yes - the only difference between the Fathom and Squall is the case. The Fathom reel has a metal case and the Squall has a graphite case. Everything else is nearly identical - Dennis

    Dennis, where can one obtain one of those wrenches you use, to remove the penn handles?

      The wrench is by Alan Tan and is available through Mysticparts.com. You can follow this link to order one www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Custom/168-TANI.aspx

    Hey. Have you worked on any penn squall 2 with levelwinds? if so what do you think about them

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  2 роки тому +1

      I have worked on them. They are a nice reel at a competitive price. Thanks for asking - Dennis

    • @moshesmoving
      @moshesmoving Рік тому

      They are worthy successors to the GTI level wind series (which were US made reels). They’ve been good for me while salmon trolling and bottom bouncing for halibut in the San Francisco area.

    Hello sr, i have re assembled using the schematic, but now mi Star drag is like to tight, it's dificult yo move the star. Sorry for mi English and thanks for your time

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  Рік тому +1

      OK - You need to remove the handle screw. It is likely that you tightened down the handle before tightening the star adjuster. Take the handle off, turn the star adjuster down and then reinstall the handle. That should fix the issue. If you cannot tighten the star adjuster with the handle removed, then you need to check how you installed the drag stack - Dennis

      @@2ndChanceTackleMi procedure was:
      1 adjust the star till one point that i need to put mi handle yo keep adjusting.
      2 then i put the others two shims of the handle put handle and screw it. But the problem is that the star is pretty hard to move and it seems that its "shorter" than before , it has les clicks.
      I can adjust the star without the handle at some point, then i need to put the handle to keep adjusting the star...i Saw schematics and all seens to be fine. Thanks for your time dennys

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  Рік тому +1

      Hmmm - you may have the star adjuster cross threading. Remove the star adjuster and take the spacer sleeve off and then try to install the star adjuster. If it is not going on easily, then the threads may be damaged. If it is going on easily, then you need to recheck the drag stack. It is possible that the earned washer is not set in the grooves inside the main gear

    Why do a lot of people bring in PENN reels for repair? Is it because more people own PENN reels, or is it because they are bad?
    I just purchased a PENN Squall II. I contemplated buying a new PENN reel for a long time because they are made in China (like 95%+ of reels today). I have an old 30+ year old PENN that was made in USA. It is a great reel as is most of PENNs older USA made reels.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  Рік тому

      Penn is one of the BIG three which includes Daiwa and Shimano. They have sold millions of reels and all of them need service. Your choices are limited for quality saltwater gear and that is why you see more of these in for service. You should enjoy the Penn Squall and it should last a lifetime assuming you keep it maintained - Dennis
