Excellent, I appreciate that you didn't make it look brand new, but preserved some of it's history & character. I do hope you have an apprentice, passing on your years of knowledge & experience. Thank you for this.
it's lovely, but if it's "an historical relic" as described, why were modern techniques used and not the historical ones? the edwardians would have used tied springs, hessian, and horsehair. also, the seat would have been higher than was done here, it's not supposed to be that low. the springs would have raised the seat up by several more centimeters than just the straight foam would have. not to mention that the foam used was low-density, so anyone sitting on that chair will feel the webbing through the seat. the nail holes go so far down the arm because the fabric went that far down originally. the upholsterer did a great job, but that is not a restoration, that is a reupholstery.
All those staples, one day in the near future, some poor upholsterer will have to remove those, when the foam crumbles,(which it will). An old chair should have traditional upholstery stuffing. It would originally had springs, not layers of cheap foam.
Original stuffing costs more and it's less comfortable what's used depends on what the client wants. Nails damage the wood so staples are way better for non visible areas, as you can see the nails left the wood in a mess.

Call me uninformed but the nail holes should have been cleaned up, they add no character to the chair in my opinion. Thanks for sharing, but I will want to see other work before joining. Sorry not best pleased.😢

I agree. Won't be long before those wheels fall off from being attached with extremely under sized nails! He's still got better skills than me though, but that really wasn't a top-notch job.
In the USA they do lot nail every layer nor do they use that adhesive, at least not the restaurateurs that I follow. I feel like all those nails leave the wood even weaker. My opinion, I could be wrong.
I'm not sure it was really that old. I didn't see the original padding, and it had wheels although they could have been added at any time. It turned out good and you can tell you have a mastery of the craft. I will look at some more of your work.
When he was cutting the foam I didn't realise he was using an electric cutter at first and thought it was an extremely sharp pair of scissors he was just dragging through it.
@@garyhiggins4333 maybe in furniture trade ..... in restoration (as the title says) you should use glue of that time - hide glue using pva is not a restoration - its a rebuild
I don't understand how you can staple that new webbing to old wood, weakened by being stapled (or nailed) again and again and again over the ages. At what point do you have to replace that particular wood?
Ужас ! Старые гвозди надо вытаскивать, а не сбивать им шляпки, дыры от гвоздей надо "залечивать" ! Поролон вместо пружин - барахло ! Работа на 2 с минусом.
Don't pat yourself to much on the back. Is a cheap lazy way to restore a chair. For starters you pull nails and tacks out, not cut them off, and you need to fill the holes. To make the chair frame solid and strong, for the new staples and nails. You don't use foam rubber for padding. Such a cheap and shoddy job, that owner paid good money for. 👎👎👎😪
it is a metamorhosis but I dont think that the wheels were needed; the chair is like a throne with its high backrest, seat is low, so not for moving which is commom to office and modern chairs
This is NOT the way to reupholster a victorian chair. Bad way to remove old nails. And regluing joints without smearing the glue evenly in the tenons and mortises makes for bad joints.
Very poor upholstery job. With historical furniture, proper upholstery requires springs to be tied to the webbing and proper stuffing sewn onto liner fabric, not foam and polyester batting.
I was getting a bit of Irish in there. Very good quality voiceover though compared to most UA-cam videos. I'd love to try my hand at a bit of reupholstery but I expect it takes many years to get this good at it.

100% agreed. Very strange methods, definitely not historically accurate.
Absolutely right !
Thanks for sharing your knowledge😊
The armrests were completely wrong, unfortunately.
This good old armchair is a least one hundred years old... How long will last this foam (given the glue spray solvents)? 😪
Easily 30 plus years

Fantastic beautiful restoration of the old 🪑🪑🪑
Traditional upholstery?
Beautiful restoration but who's sitting in it being so short??
What happened to the hand tied springs and horsehair pad? Not a restoration at all. Didn’t finish.

I feel he should have come up with some way of hiding all those nail holes. Then it would have been an excellent job!

Just an add on….reminds the of the old saying ….every corner cut …every expense spared
The commentary on this is so unprofessional. Clearly NOT A WOODWORKER.
I just watched a chair repair that was done with dried seaweed, layers and layers in between burlap. A complete masterpiece. Not this mess.
Beautiful restoration

It's called a ripping chisel and it is the correct way to get the tacks out
@@garyhiggins4333 This method damages the wood and leaves nail residues in it. You can see it in the video.

When he was cutting the foam I didn't realise he was using an electric cutter at first and thought it was an extremely sharp pair of scissors he was just dragging through it.
I use an electric carving knife to cut the foam, does a much better job than trying to carve meat and was relegated to the back of the pantry.
Bread knife I use them to
Какой трон! Такие пропорции почему то завораживает.
Please use protective gloves when removing chemical stripping.👍
Wonder why he didn't use Hide Glue? That's what it had originally.
He also used foam and dacron filler on this"historic relic". Why couldn't he upholster in traditional fillers. Its not a restoration, just upholstery
Know one really uses the horse hair anymore it's not safe the foam and fabric will be fire retardet much safer
Una silla muy hermosa. Estaba para la basura pero le devolviste el espendor.
if the item is renewed then items that did not exist at that time are not added, eg sponge
