Giving an old piece of furniture a new life is a really satisfying thing to do, repairing joinery created by a craftsman decades ago is a real compliment and sign of respect to the lost crafts and to that craftsman congratulations
This old school master desk is a true masterpiece, especially under the hands of a professional restoration engineer. Yes I am talking about you 😊😊😊😊. A very nice piece of work indeed.

Nice work, I like that you left the wear on the piece, thats its history which should never be lost, one suggestion is to put glass on the top to protect the map

I suspect that the green dye used on the fabric covering you discovered is arsenic based. Absorbs through the skin. Great work and great videos!

Thanks so much for the support.
The top of the desk will be left with the small engravings visible. I gave it 6 coats of hard wax oil and the top is well protected. I also thought about doing a small casting of epoxy resin, but then I would have distorted the desk too much.

You’ve nailed it again, mate! I’m starting to understand your ethic now. You don’t want it to look brand-new; just for it to look that it has been a great and there’s still lots of life in it yet! Bumps, bruises and scratches are just signs of its character! I love it! You did have me wondering at what that huge delivery had to do with the plan. A great addition to your well equipped workroom. Just imagine etching that map by hand! Whew! ….now, what happens with the desk? Where does it go from here? ❤️🦘🇦🇺

It turned out really nice! I think the drawer handles are upside down… but, I guess it’s a matter of personal preference. Always enjoy watching your videos!
Many thanks.. In reality I first tried turning the handles as you say, but they seemed to be the other way around. So I placed them as seen in the video.

Beautiful restoration! Attention, from the felt you see this may have been a writing desk with a reversible insert. On a lot of these old desks you could flip the writing surface. One side bare wood, the other side was topped with thick cardboard and felt for better writing. Cheers! 😄

Ciao, complimenti per quest'altro restauro. Questi scrittoi anni '50 li vedevo spesso nell'istituto scolastico della scuola media. Per rimanere originali avrei rimesso il panno verde, comunque la carta del mondo laserata è affascinante. Questo tipo è definita anche vero o carta generale del globo terrestre ed è basata sulle mappe del cartografo francese Sanson. Quando ho visto quella cassa enorme sinceramente ho pensato che avevi comprato un bella combinata a 7 lavorazioni. Invece era tutt'altro 😅. Comunque bel bestione, sicuramente cin quella puoi anche tagliare pezzi spessi 2 o 3 cm. Ciao 🖐
Ciao, è grazie mille. La cartina in particolare dovrebbe essere di Jean Janvier nel 1775. Infatti ci sono continenti con altri nome tipo australia new Holland e via dicendo. Per quanto riguarda la combinata sarà il mio prossimo acquisto (quando potrò 😅) non ho ancora provato a tagliare niente con il laser ma dovrebbe tagliare bei spessori.

The original builder of the desk really went crazy with the use of nails. Imagin the delivery of this desk on a school with metaldetector. Poor delivery man would have a lot of "fun" with the security 😂😂😂😂😂

I have restored several older desks in the last few years and sold them. One of the things I was consistently asked to do was widen the leg area under the desk. Since then, I have always done this, but kept the integrity of the original design. Just wider underneath.

the map on the desk looks nice.. but it would be difficult to write on a piece of paper sitting on it, wouldn't it? with all the grooves and all there..
Generally a person does not write directly on the paper without anything underneath, it would be enough to put a piece of cardboard in a notebook. 😊 Thanks for watching
