  • 2022 Volkswagen Taos SEL Review.
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos arrives at a time when Americans can't get enough of affordable crossovers. Replacing the Golf and Golf Alltrack, the VW Taos brings better practicality and more interior room to appeal to consumers. Is the VW Taos the best subcompact crossover you can buy in 2021? Let's find out!
Huge thank you to Quirk VW in Braintree, MA for providing the Taos SEL for this review!

I bought one! S model and love it! I'm coming from a 2011 Ford Escape: the Taos has better handling, peppy engine and better turning radius!

I lease my VW's every 2 years and it was a Taos this time. The last time I had a Jetta and when I turned it in it
had only 5,000 on it. The Taos gets better mileage and it has a lot more room so I can go shopping without
making to many trips. I like the Taos better because I don't have to stoop down to get in. In a couple years
I will get an electric car from VW.

I love the looks of the Taos and will be test driving it this Saturday. I hope that enjoy it despite my reservations that it is too underpowered for me.

I love the Taos. I was told that they couldn’t sell me the 4motion one so I’m stuck waiting or buying a Tiguan.

I completely agree with your assessment. I test drove an SE earlier this week, and while the engine performance was fine, it was rather underwhelming. I'm looking to change from my 18' Alltrack SE to something like the Taos, and really really really (yes - really) wish VW would have used the fantastic 1.8L TSI engine from the Alltrack in the new Taos vs. the fine, but uninspiring 1.5L TSI. Overall though, it's really a good vehicle and I think it'll be a big seller for VW.

as i know 1.8l is no longer in production, it was relplaced with 2.0 tsi

Best review of Taos I’ve seen, thanks. However, I think you’re a little too hard on the performance issue. You can always find a faster car if you look around. There is something to be said that it’s more fun driving s as slow car fast than a fast car slow. I’ve never had a real fast car. My first VW was a 2004 New Bug TDI, then a 2009 Golf TDI. During Dieselgate bought two 2016 Jetta’s. I fell in love with that 1.4 engine, think it has same 184 torque as Taos. One of the Jetta’s was for my son. I upgraded my Jetta to a 2017 Golf Alltrack. Compared to the Jetta was not at all impressed with the Alltrack 1.8. It was only after it was chipped to give about 230 hp and 230 torque (on regular gas) that I noticed a difference. The gas mileage on the Alltrack, even before the tune, was quite poor. My son’s family outgrew the Jetta with the addition of twin boys so traded in the Alltrack for an Atlas and I took over his Jetta. I’m going to trade the Jetta for a Taos 4-Motion when they are available. Think I’ll leave the engine tune stock.

Totally agree. I just came back from a test drive with the Taos Fwd with the 8 speed auto. Fun and peppy car to drive! Quick off the line acceleration with no turbo lag. The transmission was smooth and responsive. With IQ Drive, this will be a great roadtrip vehicle with tech from Audis costing much more! Excellent value!

I’d consider going to this Taos from my 18 Vw Golf Sportwagen. Why? Height or lack therein in my Sportwagen. That’s all I’m missing besides the heated steering, some more height and maybe that digital cluster.
So my Sportwagen’s main dash has the same heating dials, activity safety features are the same and even mine parks itself. So to help me decide to go to this Taos knowing it’s height advantage would be a plus. However it sure doesn’t look too tall for the great views you have in the midsize crossovers so I’ll have to test drive to compare.
Last thing I want answered from a reviewer. It is this. If you buy this front drive version it has already been panned for its Hugh torque steer in slippery weather. What will snow tires on this front drive feel like. I’m guessing torque steer will be diminished but I’m also guessing that snows on this will make it just fine in the “ snow belts” next winter OR will it?
I’ll wait for that review and as well whether V W will follow up with a hybrid Taos!
    Go Ni.

I was interested in the Kia Seltos (which looks like it's sibling) but now prefer the very one (SEL, cornflower blue, black wheels, sunroof) you test drove. Taos gets better gas mileage.

I am a VW Guy. VW needs to GET RID OF the FAKE exhaust cutouts in the bumper. Makes no sense. Either make the bumper smooth or actually exit the exit exhaust through the bumper cutouts. We all know they are fake. Duh! Which brings me to another point. The Taos has the 4Motion which back in my day(I'm 54) was called the Synchro on the Vanagon and Quantum and even on the Golf(in other countries but not the USA(scratching my head). The 4Motion name is boring. The 4Motion(Synchro) Taos has the 7 speed DSG(dual clutch) transmission which means that VW MUST make a Taos R. And I am not just talking about an "R Line" cosmetic R Taos. I am talking about a full fledged Taos R(or GT version) with a 240hp GTI engine. We deserve to have this in the USA. Heck in Europe the VW provides the Tiguan R line with ACTUAL performance goodies. Why not the USA? Okay okay, enough complaining. I agree that there is plenty of competition for the VW Taos and this is why VW needs to make it stand out. Most sales will be those who are VW nuts already. But if VW does make a Taos R(GT) or an "Off Road" version with some flaring and large/wider suspension the Taos will do VERY nicely in the USA. My personal preference as far as that huge panoramic sunroof is that I prefer to not have it at all. From what I understand having a sunroof makes it so there needs to be additional bracing and in the structure and therefore make it heavier. Also, I cannot imagine the repair costs to something that large in the future and for privacy while driving inside the vehicle I do not like all that light coming into the cabin. VW, please provide an upscale VW SUV with the option of NOT having a sunroof.

VW is saving a crap of money producing it in Mexico while ripping off the customer. A bigger engine should be standard.
