2022 VW Taos Review - Perfect Size & Crispy Tech for a Confusing Price

- Опубліковано 24 чер 2021
- The 2022 Taos is an all-new, much needed car for the VW brand. It takes on the likes of the Subaru Crosstrek, Kia Seltos, Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-30, and whatever other CUVs that have been pumped out recently. There's no denying its prowess in practicality and technology, but there are some real head scratching issues with the package as a whole. Watch to understand what I'm talking about.

Thank you, Royal on the Eastside, for loaning me the Taos(es) used for this review! Check them out.

VW in America is sad tbh. In Europe, trims have more features and are better priced for the market...they can’t sell those trims here because people here just wouldn’t buy them for the price unlike Europe. Great review!
The CX-30 is small when compared to the Taos. The CX-30 is also hard to see out of for me. I went and drove both of them and the Honda HR-V. I wish the HR-V had the Taos motor or at least a turbo option. Thanks for the review.
I purchased an SEL 2 weeks ago..it was pricier but I did get 4 years/50 thousand mile warranty ..plus road side and full maintenance for 2 years..as a single woman..that matters
4 yr/50 warranty and 2 year maintenance is standard for all VW I believe.
I got 100k milles or 7 years pf warranty on my SE
Me...started my Vw experience in 2016 with a '15 Golf, then a 17 GTI sel, then a '18 Golf R, added a '15 used Tiguan,...sold that now a '22 Taos sel AWD. Now I know my Tiguan was a generation or two older than the Taos, but it's all I have to compare to. In the real world I find the fuel economy almost twofold better, unbelievable I got up at 18 miles per gallon in the city with my 2.0 l turbo Tiguan that had 200 horsepower and 207 lb feet of torque and right now the Taos is about 28 city and yes it's not as snappy but I would trade that especially because I work on the road and fuel economy right now is very important as everybody knows. Interior room is close to the same as the first gen or second gen Tiguan and I find it has a great sunroof might take one was an s only it was just a base so I enjoy all the extra gadgets with the Taos. Things I don't like about the Taos it sounds kind of like a tin can when you're driving it or if you shut the doors the doors have a hollow sound when you shut them as well as the power it is down in power compared to what I'm used to driving even my 2015 golf with 170 horsepower would destroy this thing in a race. But knowing that my engine in my Taos is a Miller cycle now I understand I did not know that so thank you for pointing that out it all makes sense. The Miller cycle was used by a lot of different manufacturers namely Mazda and the 2.3 V6 Mazda Millenia back in the mid-90s with a supercharger and it produced something like 190 horsepower or something. Anyway I'm not going to get into that thanks for your review sorry for the long comment.
I just purchase the Taos S model with IQ and Adaptive Cruise Control- I owned a Crosstrek previously- Vw for the win! My experience with the Taos S model is much better than with the Crosstrek.
Congrats, glad you're enjoying it!
Congrats Marianne! I am looking to buying the Taos S FWD with IQ Drive as well. With Travel Assist, does it keep the car reliably centered in its lane on freeways? I'm looking for a good roadtrip car. Thanks!
@@BuRNingFLaN yes, yes it does. You will get messages flashing on the display to move to the center and the active assist will move the wheel. If the turn signal is activated or there are no painted lines on the road (going through intersections) you can feel in the wheel it let's up, so always keep your hands on the wheel. And when a vehicle cuts in front of you at high speeds, hold your coffee tight.
@@marianneciovacco8565 good to know Marianne! Looks like it will be a great roadtrip vehicle after all. I just test drove the FWD Taos S and it a lot of fun to drive--! Very peppy!
Another good one brother. Keep up the great work
The cicadas made me mad for you, lol! The DMV was inundated with them for nearly 8 weeks, and the cacophony in your video gave me bad memories! 😂 Speaking of which, thanks for sharing your impressions of the Taos. I’m going to be test driving it this Saturday!
Yeah I loved the cicada outtakes 🤣🤣🤣🤣 2020 was a strange year
I'm obsessed with the shots of the black one in the rain.
Me too! Large umbrellas are a must for filming
The awd models are more expensive because they come with a dsg. Worth it over the standard tipronic transmission in my opinion. It does not have paddles though, just the regular slap shifter.
You make good reviews. This car is on my list. I was worried because it just came out last year and I figured there will always be teething problems. I like the looks, the digital dash and I even like the infotainment (buttons and all). The leather wheel and shifter nob etc is nice. I'd like sunroof, traction control, blind spot monitoring and most bells and whistles. and the color black. My turbo Jetta has fog lights and I would like to have them but not a deal breaker. (I felt the Tiguan looked bland inside but maybe I was in a S model.). I hope they address fit and finish and also get the pricing right.
Thank you! If it wasn't for the shortage, these would probably be priced at invoice which would make them more reasonably priced.
@@Realistick May I ask how long it takes to edit your videos? I'd love to make some myself, but I am not a fast editor. Thank you again. PS Really well, done.
@@Applecompuser Thank you, it depends on the car, how much research I need to do, and how hard that research is to do. Something like this probably took me 16-18 hours, I've had some take me well over 20 and others under 15! I'm also not the quickest editor, I tend to be more efficient when I am really interested in the car!
Is the wireless car play only available only to SEL?
Great review! Thanks
Se and sel according to VW themselves!
@@Realistick nice
Can you review safety features and car play map during test drive
@@skytechm07 I reviewed the safety features during the drive but I'll definitely try android auto the next time and if I find anything notable, I'll talk about it!
It’s the best looking and sized VW. Only things I don’t like is the manual tailgate and the interior color combinations. This will sell tons.
I just love the secada kung fu fighting
May I ask how tall you are? I'm trying to see ground clearance and tech compared to the atlas, tig and hyundais vehicles like Sante fe and Tucson
I think I put this in the back seat portion but I am 6 foot 3!
@@Realistick thanks alot! I like to research vehicles before I buy them online and in person. And this new one caught my eye since I was looking to buy a VW Tiguan,or a Rav4 or a hyundai Tucson/ Santa fe and leg room plus ground clearance is a big thing for me
I was considering a Taos as a replacement for my Alltrack (I just need something bigger than the golf based Alltrack). Overall, the Taos is a nice vehicle, and the FWD 8 speed auto is pretty good. However, VW missed the boat by using the somewhat anemic 1.5L TSI instead of going with the fantastic 1.8L TSI from the Alltrack. I know they used the smaller engine in order to achieve higher efficiency, and while the 1.5L is fine, it's also underwhelming. As such, I will unfortunately have to pass on the Taos.
I think if you want speed in this class, the only option is a cx30 2.5 turbo, but the Taos isn't too shabby either. The alltracks definitely hold an edge in performance though, no denying that.
Hopefully a tune will come. The 1.4tsi with a stage 1 makes for a great and fun commuter.
The cicadas must be a southern Indiana thing because we don't have them up here very bad. I haven't seen a single one yet this year. By the way bro should I start calling you "Bloomington Bruce Lee?" Looking forward to your next one. I would love to see you do the Hyundai Santa Cruz if possible. TTYL bro
Thank you, and they just finished up their thing. While I don't deserve that title, my Cicada patience was gone by the time I filmed this, I was going for blood lol. I'd love to get my hands on one when I can!
@@Realistick Well keep up the good work brother. I look forward to your future vids. And if you get a Santa Cruz send me an email if you still got it. I want to be first to see that vid drop. Thanks again for doing the 1st Mazda 3 Hatch review. The second was a welcome surprise!!!
If it was cheaper i honestly would’ve bought one right now 😩 i feel like for $30k i might as well buy a Tiguan
That was an issue I was running into myself, there are some unique features that you would get for 30k in a taos (like the digital cockpit and heated steering wheel) that you wouldn't get in a SE tiguan, so it kind of just depends on what matters more to you. I personally think an S with AWD and IQ Drive is the model to pick if value is what you want.
@@Realistick That's exactly the build I have, the S AWD package with IQ. Love it.
Update! I bought a 4Motion S, It has LC, I tried launch control today on the Taos with DCT 7 speed
Not sure why it's advertised as an 8.4 secons, but with launch control I did a 0 to 60 in 6.9 secons
Also the the 4MOTION has a better suspension and the steering feels great.
I bought it with the IQ and it works great my vehicle $27,895
I'm about to do a Taos 4motion review! Definitely going to try that out. I think DA has a lot to do with it but we shall see what I can get out here. I just drove the new jetta with the same engine and got 7.6 so 6.9 sounds very optimistic but maybe not impossible.
@@Realistick I live in FL at sea level that helps but Try it with 93 octane, you don't have to but it will increase the hp
@@RichardVac I ran regular because it had a full tank and got 7.5! Much better than my 8.3 in the fwd.
@@Realistick Cool, how high above sea level are you? Because I live in Florida so the oxygen levels are really important also tire pressures any little thing can affect the 0-60 run, wind, humidity.
But I am glad you tried this cool feature that no one talks about and this low budget SUV has, none of the others printed similarly have this, I think it's a great vehicle for the money don't you think?
@@RichardVac 800 ft, (DA was 1500 ft today) but I was really shocked to see the "launch program activated" box pop up, quite wild, I love that they added it. I just wish the dsg was a little smoother in regular driving.
We need a cicada death counter in the next review
Hmm, missed my opportunity this year. Maybe in 17 years
Nice price for the S version, but with SE, the price jumps up quite a bit to be more than the next class size SUV.
I'm in a similar boat, however, I think the SE still makes sense because the interior space is so comparable to a larger SUV and it has a such a modern, swanky interior for the price (especially with the cloudtex seats). That price range is usually where these "subcompact" suvs top out, but I can not make sense of the SEL without big rebates.
LOL the punch
They were coming for my life, no mercy
The cicadas 😂😂
this suv deserves an inline 6
The saddest part is I can’t fit my golf bag in the back, REALLY unfortunate. Hahaha
Best in class vehicle and it's not close given Mazda infotainment is a deal breaker.
Are you in PA? Just discovered your channel. Don’t see anything you need to change to your presentation style.
Thank you, and no, I'm out in Indiana!
Is there anyway I can put my dirtbike on it?
A small trailer would be your best bet
how about entreinment sistem_?
Give me an SEL + AWD... and put the Golf R motor in it. Instant winner in my book. =)
Still waiting for the 4 motion review
Me too! They haven't sent any to the dealership here in town
@@Realistick damn Volkswagen
I am a VW Guy. VW needs to GET RID OF the FAKE exhaust cutouts in the bumper. Makes no sense. Either make the bumper smooth or actually exit the exit exhaust through the bumper cutouts. We all know they are fake. Duh! Which brings me to another point. The Taos has the 4Motion which back in my day(I'm 54) was called the Synchro on the Vanagon and Quantum and even on the Golf(in other countries but not the USA(scratching my head). The 4Motion name is boring. The 4Motion(Synchro) Taos has the 7 speed DSG(dual clutch) transmission which means that VW MUST make a Taos R. And I am not just talking about an "R Line" cosmetic R Taos. I am talking about a full fledged Taos R(or GT version) with a 240hp GTI engine. We deserve to have this in the USA. Heck in Europe the VW provides the Tiguan R line with ACTUAL performance goodies. Why not the USA? Okay okay, enough complaining. I agree that there is plenty of competition for the VW Taos and this is why VW needs to make it stand out. Most sales will be those who are VW nuts already. But if VW does make a Taos R(GT) or an "Off Road" version with some flaring and large/wider suspension the Taos will do VERY nicely in the USA. My personal preference as far as that huge panoramic sunroof is that I prefer to not have it at all. From what I understand having a sunroof makes it so there needs to be additional bracing and in the structure and therefore make it heavier. Also, I cannot imagine the repair costs to something that large in the future and for privacy while driving inside the vehicle I do not like all that light coming into the cabin. VW, please provide an upscale VW SUV with the option of NOT having a sunroof. Also, what happened to fog lights??
I’m a VW guy too, (3 Golfs, a Tiguan, 5 old Beetles, and a 411!) I totally agree about the exhaust tips. I had a 2018 Golf that had the 1st Generation fake exhaust ports, but unlike the 2019 & 20 the 2018 didn’t have chrome all the way around, just on the top, which really de-emphasized them. On the Taos, they are so far apart and chrome rimmed that they don’t even look like they’re trying to be exhaust tips anymore, just some odd quirky design, so they don’t bother me as much. Lol
And the panoramic sunroom is NOT standard equipment, and is (I think) a $1200 option on the Comfortline and Highline (SE & SEL in the USA) and is unavailable on the base model, ...I love mine, it transforms the interior, particularly the back seat, and there is a full length electrically-operated opaque sunshield that keeps the inside private and cool in the summer, or anytime you want privacy. Also the structural rigidity is maintained by the rails above the doors lengthwise, and there is a sturdy crossmember going across the vehicle above the B pillar, that makes for a very tight chassis without additional reinforcement elsewhere, like you might have in a convertible.
APR is coming out with a tune soon......
Interesting, I don't know many regular customers who tune their small Suvs, and I don't think this felt underpowered, but if this had 190 horsepower and a boatload of torque with the dual clutch, that seems like it would be pretty fun
they should have used the analog dials with digital screen somewhere in the cluster. that digital cluster is simply ugly and looks like it belongs to somewhere in the factory to be used for instrument. at least give it a better screen refresh rate that thing is going to tire the eyes out during longer trips. don't even start me with blue dash it looks like it was spray painted by 13 year old who is into hot wheels
I prefer VW over SUBARU CROSSTREK
if you want to attract more utube viewers look to speedkar, 100 rental cars, chad haire. do deep dives on the mechanics and liveability. discuss maintenance costs & schedules. call out rpm at various speeds. please dont be like 90% of utube car reviewers who wax poetic (or not) about plastic trim, give their own highly subjective opinions about exterior looks and read off option choices from the maker’s website. thanks.
I think what you say does apply to a lot of channels, but not mine.... thanks
So they got rid of the Golf for this 😭
I might be ok with it if they make a GTI/GLI version but if it's going to be 36k, pass
That would be neat, they got rid of the Golf in the US, however, they kept the GTI and Golf R!
Taos is soo unreliable. Biggest pos I’ve owned.
