  • Updated review of my Boss 7-ton electric log splitter after a couple seasons of use. This unit has been a great workhorse and has exceeded my expectations for the size unit that it is. Thanks for watching.

    I have the same machine, same experience, including operating with my foot sometimes.
    I split multiple cords per season to heat the house. It can split large rounds by nibbling at the edges first. Not great at really knotty rounds, but you do the best you can.
    Harbor Freight has a latching 120V foot switch. It's great to use it with the splitter instead of clicking the power button between rounds.
    Given how much I do, I would probably look for a larger and faster one, but this unit does the job!

    Got the same machine. Put some chainsaw bar oil on the wedge. Logs that you couldn't split will usually split after lube. Lube makes the ram moves better. Try it.

      I'll try that too. I have greased both the main channel and the wedge with bearing grease but probably need to do it a bit more often, thanks.

    I got the 5 ton just a few days ago.. I couldnt find the 7 ton in my area and I didnt want to wait for order.... I love splitting by hand but it dont love me.. I have a army injury and other major health problems, so I am limited on what I use to be able accomplish with ease... My first day using the 5 ton,,, I can say my only complaint was that I didnt buy it sooner..... I split a half a face cord in about 30 minutes... it would have taken me all day with breaks to do that by hand given my health issues.. I would caution people though,,, wear safety glasses and if the unit requries 2 hands to operate,, buy the footswitch because I had a couple logs pop out with some force behind it.. If it caught you wrong,, that would leave a mark and could definitely take out an eye,, bloody a lip or nose... You need to have a hand free to protect yourself and guide the logs.... Other than that,,,, I am literally thrilled with mine... Oh,, and dont operate it with the bleed screw out,,, just back it out about 5 or 6 full turns.. otherwise your fluid will squirt out under load...

    Nice video, my compliments! The wood you split was an old aged round. I would have also liked to see how it does with a green juicy round! HA Ha....I have the 5-ton HF machine and have split many cords of wood over the past 10 years with it. And I agree, it will do a lot more than what the manufacturer recommends. Since mine has a hold it to keep it on type switch, I just bought a $2 bar clamp from HF and clamped it in the on position, I then use the plug as my on/off switch. You did not mention, does your unit have a two position speed on your handle....half way down for faster and all the way down for slow and stronger? I run it up until touching, then go slow and strong until the wood cracks, then back to half way position to speed through the split. Makes the work go a little bit faster. And I have split logs that same size but green red oak. Now that I am older, 73, I prefer to split in half those larger pieces with my HF 10 ton manual hydraulic splitter, and then lift the halves to split them on the electric, easier on the old back!

    Seems fine for those who just like to enjoy a backyard fire or casual fireplace ambience...
    which would be me.
    If you're someone who relies on having massive stacks of wood to heat your home or whatever, then obviously it's not for you,
    although it would be perfect for splitting kindling/starter wood

    One thing you always got to make sure you do is loosen the bleed screw when using it and tighten up when moving it around. If you don't loosen the bleed screw you could damage your hydraulic ram seals

    Is this a goog splitter for beginning. A small business

    I wish I knew what the difference is between the 5 ton, 7 ton etc. They all seem to have the same motor. Mine will only split small diameter logs but I bought it secondhand.

    Manual says to lube the rails and end of wedge. Do you do thst and with what?

    • @electricalmechanicaldiyguy7048
      @electricalmechanicaldiyguy7048  11 місяців тому +1

      I have oiled the rails and wedge a few times with 30W oil. I then run it back and forth a couple times but that’s about it.

    sounds like it need a refill of oil, when its close to the end it sounds different.

    how do you get plastic piece out from the ram mine got stuck under the ram?

    • @electricalmechanicaldiyguy7048
      @electricalmechanicaldiyguy7048  Рік тому

      When mine broke it was kind of sticking out halfway and was still jammed under the ram but didn’t effect how it worked. After some more use it did eventually just come out from under the ram. Haven’t had any problems with how it works now that it’s out. I wouldn’t worry about it and just keep splitting.

    Idk why they got to push the log for? The blade should move into the logs. Less force on the machine mean? More splitting power! They really need a 4 way splitting head

      These are just not strong enough to have a four-way splitter

    • @426superbee4

      @@tigertom53 It could be. Idk? yet again it might work

    • @kenltron
      @kenltron 6 місяців тому

      You can get a 4-way splitter head (I have one), but at 7 tons it does not work with many rounds. It's easy to slide on and off, so you can try it with your round, then quickly go back to the normal splitter if the 4-way doesn't work.

      @@kenltron It could be. There not made very good. Mine is the 7 ton Smart splitter. I have a hard time with just 1 blade splitting.. I have to fine the right angle and weak spot. It needs to be built stronger in the sliding head, and More hump to it.. At 75 dollars i can't complain TO MUCH he hee Just more work with the single blade
