It gets even more ironic when you findout Ainz was seriously considering blowing the whole thing off because Zanac impressed him so much. So serving him his head was quite possibly the worst possible move they could've made.
He was trying to think of another solution beside razing the entire kingdom to the ground without looking weak in front of the Guardians, as his greatest fear is that they will lose faith in him and abandon him. It's why he hadn't ordered the attack yet.
Tbh they couldn't have known and this was desperation.
@@crylec6534 No, they should have known better. Even more galling is that they asked for safety for themselves and their family members, not for anyone else in the kingdom.
They were greedy, selfish, and corrupt. They had completely abandoned their responsibilities to their own people. The act of assassinating their own crown prince was abhorrent, but what Ainz found truly unforgivable was the very nature of their request.
@@Josh-99 The kingdom was falling. The weakest enemy trumps most of their men. Are they corrupt for sure, but what good could they do against Ainz, Zanac did his best in a vain effort. At this point the nobles took a gamble to save themselves and their families and they lost.
@@crylec6534 I'm a graduate of the Naval Academy and served as a military officer for 6 years. I say this to set the stage for my response to you:
As the people charged with the defense of the kingdom and its citizens, who lived a life of luxury and comfort on the backs of those who did the actual work in return for bearing the weight of Responsibility, you FORM RANKS. You buy whatever time you can, even if it's only minutes or seconds, for the innocent civilians in the city behind you to get to safety, evacuate, or, in the worst of cases, make peace with their fate.
What the nobles did here is an act of unforgivable cowardice and dereliction of duty.
Zanac understood this; he was preparing for the army to make their final stand. Had that have happened, there was a solid possibility that Ainz would have spared much of the Kingdom, as he was sitting at his field camp contemplating a way to tone down the brutality of the campaign without seeming weak in front of his own Guardians (something not shown in the anime but described in the Light Novel). Zanac's courage and boldness had reached Ainz's humanity, but all that was washed away in an instant by the abhorrent actions of the useless, parasitic, cowardly nobles.
The added line of “We’ll find the families later” was real sinister.
Apparently, Ainz's english VA follows the light novel, in which one of the nobles ask about their families; Ainz then promises to find them and bring them to Neuronist as well. Ainz's english VA also voices the audio books, from what I heard.

"Give him a proper burial" The prince is one of two people I can think of where Ainz actually showed respect after their death.
And the other is Gazef Stronoff 😢 'Tis a shame, his eventual demise
@@cto_plushtubing Sucks that some of the best characters in the series died because they were a part of one of the worst kingdoms.
Indeed. Even further remember last time he was handed a head he turned it into a death knight
I love how just before Zanac died we see Albedo call him “an inferior creature” or something to that effect, but the moment Ainz showed respect to him, she cradled the head like it was her own child because she gained respect for him too because of Ainz, it’s such a small detail, but I found it pretty cool that they thought of that, like, she could just have it in her hands, or even in one hand, but because Ainz was showing him respect, she cradles the head with care
@@3adgamd3rThat wasn't because she respected him, she hates humans, but merely because Ainz respected him she _showed_ him respect due to her loyalty. You can show a single act of respect to someone without actually respecting them as an individual.
She would've held animal droppings in her hands like it was gold if Ainz insisted they were important animal droppings.
When Ainz sat down, he didn't sit in a regal way but in a villainous slacker way. This guy was so mad that even his passive didn't activate.
He wasn't outwardly angry, but it was more of a simmering kind of anger. The only time Ainz was so angry that his override didn't work was when he was screaming at Lupusregina in the novels. He was LIVID when he found out she almost let the potion maker die, and he screamed at her to the point where she was shaking pretty badly.

"Give him a proper burial" was already an early warning
Yea no cap that should have been a clear assessment of we’re fucked and we just screwed our families over by assassinating the prince in a desperate attempt to live 😂😂😂 such a idiotic thing to do
The craziest thing about all of this is that these are high ranking nobles, which means they were present in the throne room when the king himself offered his head as penance for the actions of single foolish nobleman and Albedo denied it! She literally said "Either way, our response to this matter will not change". Yet these fools still thought offering the head of Zanac would gain them salvation.
Ainz promised Zanac a gentle death, one of the most merciless gestures Nazarick has to offer and a true sign of respect and not only did these cowards take that away, but they trampled on and disrespected the sanctity of Gazef's armor, a man we all know that Ainz held in the highest regard and truly respected and valued. Essentially they spit in the face of Ainz twice!...... Your suffering is all but assured.
You would be amazed at what the fear of a painful death can do to a person. You ever see the Saw movies?
@@wusscake Oooh, yes I have these are prefect for scumbags and I would ask Demigure to build them.
Well those so-called nobles are cowardly idiots after all.
Perfectly to kiss anyone’s ass if it meant saving their lives.
I doubt any of them were really listening to Albedo.
They were probably too busy staring at her body, every so eager to play “grab ass” with her!
Besides, they are just the minions here for their prince.
And minions aren’t exactly know for brains, now are they?
Also, they foolishly assumed that because Ainz looked like a stereotypical monster that he would be happy to see such a revolting display of cold-blooded murder.
The humans misjudge him because if the way he looks.
As is often the case.
Both in the real world and the fictional world.
And after that send them to demiurge’s happy farm.
Merciful would perhaps be a better wording than "merciless".
"And even if they do beg for death, she doesn't need to be in a hurry about it."
Dub makes Ainz sound even more sinister.
It makes it sound like he just gave the NPCs full fucking control of when they're allowed to die. Knowing them, it gonna be a while
@@CapyMartinBara And the smile Albedo gives at 1:10. She knows full well what they're in for and she's enjoying every second of it.
Not sure I agree but to each their own. Dub Ainz sounds kinda tired to me and his voice is definitely not as deep or forceful as in the original. It’s not bad though.
Nah in the sub he actually sounded pissed off, this sounded more like "oh btw"
@@Acemancello @Skechi_J seriously there is so much more emotion in the sub, i like how in the sub he specifically mentions that their families will also be sent to neuronist (which is something you wouldnt really pick up on in the sub) so thats cool but man the emotion in sub is 2x better
One of the few times Ainz has been so pissed he goes full circle into being chillingly calm.
People who are obviously angry but completely calm are the scariest
@@hedgehoginacanoe5838 Yeah, it's sort of impressive when you go full circle like that.
All I could think about was how Caesar reacted to Pompey's head being presented to him as a means to curry favor. Even if the man was an enemy, he was entitled to respect.
Ainz: Shame on the nobles of Re-Estize for such barbarity. Shame.
Nobles: But… you are enemies.
Ainz: HE WAS YOUR KING!!! A true ruler. To die in this sordid way, quartered like some low thief. Shame!
As a side note, if I were Ainz, would’ve also told Aura to tell Neouronist: “To use these witless vermin to prepare for me a symphony of sorrow. May a grand orchestra of anguish and despair echo throughout the Great Tomb of Nazarick’s mighty halls! For only with such sweet music, will the fury currently burning within my weary soul be quenched."
I think that was Alexander. Anyway; the point was Caesar was hyping the dude himself and when they presented the head, he lost the great battle that he wanted
Actually it's more like Alexander when the Persians presented their king's head. Ceaser was mad because he wanted to spare Pompy's life as a PR tool and killing him screwed the whole thing up.
Exactly
@@bryannkam how darkly poetic
The "We’ll find the families later" Ainz said is from the light novels and it's a small but vital detail. Those nobles didn't just screw themselves, they screwed over their wives and children too.
i think ainz will not torture them ----- he will give them a mercy kill if they get in his way
*forget what i sayed ----- he did send people after ther families in the LN ---- well we will see
@@baronbrummbar8691 Yeah they got tortured too because those nobles begged for Ainz to share their reward with their families. In a way the wives and children are being tortured to add another level of punishment to the nobles, for what remains of their life they'll know that they brought this worse than death pain on not only themselves but also what is likely their closest loved ones.
Which is one of the pretty damn evil moments from Ains. Because yeah he can say he gave them exactly what he promised and what they asked him for, but sending innocent people, particularly children to someone like Neurologist is evil.
@@JamesTobiasStewart Well, those idiots shouldn't tell Lord Ainz they have a family. Okay, that is pretty fucking evil for him to do but nobody is a perfect ruler.
He did it out of honor. To go against the kings order was to go against Ains wish. Bringing him the kings head robbed him of the honor of battle and a merciful death granted by Ains. Thats why Ains took offense to it
I also think it was because after speaking with Zanac, Ainz saw how worthy he actually was of his royal blood. To see such an honorable man betrayed in such a way disgusted him.
Truly one of the best things he ever did
And as far as I knew Ains respected the new king and was disappointed about what he had to do
Sorry to say but no.
Ainz was upset because out of everyone he's met, only the prince had ever questioned him and treated him as a person. It was the first time he got to have an actual conversation instead of pretending to be this higher than God figure.
There was also honor in his actions of questioning ainz. It was a respect that the prince earned through bravery.
"A dauntless man... that must be what true Royalty is like"
Lol, comments like these make me look at Overlord fans a literal Demiurges. Ainz shits and you guys think it's gold XD. Back to your comment, he simply liked the noble and is pissed off at what happened to him.
It reminds me when Ptolemy of Egypt gave Julius Caesar the head of his rival Pompey who he had assassinated when he fled to Egypt. This was done to win Caesar's favor. Instead, Caesar was disgusted with such treachery of the Pharaoh's court that he eventually sought vengeance and soon allied himself with Cleopatra in ousting Ptolemy. It's amazing how many historical references you can find hidden in this show.
This video shouldn't have cut off before Aura's reaction to that. Her cheery realization of what Ainz wanted made it all the more chilling.
Aura's cheery personality is just how she was made. To her, humans are merely cattle to be culled for their hide and meat.
Aura was probably the most loyal of the flooor guardians imo. Also my favorite 😂
I just realized the loop in it. The group of men asked Ainz to spare them and their families, specifically Ainz to spare them, but they never did mention anyone else in Nazarick.
Spared them of the painless death he promised with the king
That isn't it. The idea was that he wasn't going to break the agreement but he would be willing to let them call off the agreement after enough begging to die.
Also the forces of Nazarick's are an extension and representation of Ainz own power so that wouldn't be a legit loophole anyways.
The actual loop is that he will make them want to beg for death.
This is a perfect example of "lawful evil". Ainz upholds his end of the bargain but makes it _worse_ than the fate they wanted to avoid. He only allows them to die when they beg for it, or in other words when they willingly relinquish their reward. The loophole he's abusing is that they just asked to be alive, saying nothing about the quality of that life.
@@WolforNuva A Faustian deal in other words
I can see why, after all Ains wanted a honor battle, and had good talk literally after the meetings. Maybe Ains would even spared him and offer him a place of the kingdom. TBH that dude deserved not to die
Probably not. Simply because Zanac already made up his mind to die with his kingdom with honor. It was why Ainz agreed to be merciful and kill them in a painless manner. After he saw that the one person he finally had an actual heart to heart talk with was killed, he had nothing but contempt for all those nobles and the rest of the kingdom.
So even if he would have offered him a place, Zanac's mind was already made up. It would have been in insult to him to offer him a place when he just showed his resolve to die with his kingdom.
But didn't he say that zanac would make a great King someday, i don't think he would have killed him.
Ains actually did consider calling off the massacre out of respect for Zanac. Then the nobles showed up...
Zanac would rather die than to serve Ainz
I figured that Ainz would’ve thrashed the army and killed the soldiers out of respect for Zanak’s resolve, but spared the common folk because of how honorable Zanak was. That would’ve been the perfect middle ground for the situation that would’ve appeased Nazarik, and shown that he can be both merciful and not to be trifled with.
Love them just marching off, following Albedo, blissfully unaware of who the Neuronist is.
And remember, they don't get to be released through death until long after they beg to die.
"I won't kill you..."
"Oh thank you!"
"... but you'll wish I had"
"What was that?"
"Nothing. Go inside and see Neuronist."
"Oooook........."
Ainz elaborates to him that in Nazarick, death is a mercy of freedom from suffering in life, stunning the cleric.
- Overlord Light Novel series written by the author Kugane Maruyama.
With how disappointed and disillusioned Ainz sounded, they should've picked up on the notion that he wasn't about to spare them from anything.
... Ainz thought he found something in Zanac, that he thought he could never find in any other human: a solid mind, and a kind heart, that beats and cares for the welfare of the Kingdom... And these idiot nobles just killed him.
Ainz was pissed, and had every right to be.
Rip. That guy was one of my favorite characters, I didn't expect him to be but he was a welcome cliche dodge.
He didn't deserve to die like that.
Also, loved the conversation between him and Ainz, this dub has always been well performed.
They foolishly thought betraying their leader would get Ainz on his good side, but all it really shows is how untrustworthy they all are. Now death will be a luxury to them.
Alexander, Genghis Khan, and Cao Cao all knew how to reward people like this. Glad to see Ainz understands as well.
He didnt get mad because they are disloyal curs, he got mad because they betrayed somebody he liked, big difference you dont see him torturing Princess renner, fluder and lord knows how many other treasonness turncoats to death do you now?
I think Ainz ways the use you offer and how bad your betrayle is. Fludder and Renner wanted something specific that ainz offered. Plus, I think if Ainz offers you the option to betray, he is giving you a pardon in a sense. If you turn it down however, he respects you for standing your ground, like Gazef. Its mostly speculation on my part, as I don't read the LN, so I struggle with words to explain sometimes.
@@xxxhalo4everxxx Examples like the princess and other nobles are different. Not exactly an impractical move from all points...
Except... Princess Renner. We all know she's betraying her entire kingdom and everyone in it INCLUDING CLIMB so that she can join Nazarick, become an imp, and make Climb one as well in order to basically subjugate him forever. dub of overlord reminds me of the Cilvanis video about Dub vs Sub
Chris Guerrero is an amazing voice actor. He loves his character.
I still think dubbed Ains is my favorite version, especially since I only saw dubbed until the current season. This is one of the few shows where I really like the cast they have for both versions.
Agreed, dude who dubs Ainz does a great job.
This reminds me of the conclusion of the Genghis Khan’s rise to power in Mongolia. He had been at war with his blood brother, Jamukha, for many years and despite their differences he still respected him. In the end, Jamukha’s own men betrayed him and brought him to Temujin in hopes of having a place in his new empire. He found their lack of loyalty to their own leader so insulting that he had those men executed, along with their families.
As always, Christopher Guerrero is killing it as Ainz, only wish he would have sounded a bit more angry at the end
Too be fair, if he doesn’t sound angry, that would be scary. You won’t know if he’ll screw you over.

Ains showed respect to an enemy. That in itself marks his complex nature. An enemy who had accepted their doomed Fate and chose to keep their dignity and still honor Ains as well. That was a noble character. Regardless of his flaws. That infuriating disregard to the wishes of Ains and his genuine admiration towards the Prince, by the cowardly nobles, is a truly complex dynamic. Ains would have spared the country, but was shown it wasn't worth saving anyone anymore. The Humans played their hand and lost. His anger was justified, he lost the option of killing a worthy man, or a worthy subordinate. This shows writing never stops surprising me.

I like how the dub added the bit about their families, If I'm not mistaken in the LN the families of those nobles were also taken and sent to Nazarick
Also, is just me or does it sound like they lowered the volume of the music at the end ?
To be more specific they actually only asked to save themselves initially. After Ainz grants them “mercy”, one of them whimpers, “but… my family…” and Ainz then proceeds to grant the “mercy” to their families as well.

The one thing people should fear above all else when it comes to Ainz, its not his anger.
Its his disappointement.
When you anger him, he would take care of you himself.
Should you disappoint him... he will stop caring. He will let the members of Nazarick handle matters. Him letting his denizens cover this without any hindrance is the worst punishment he can give to someone.

@@mattyice1095 And Dr. Gero
I love coolers voice actor hahaha
When people say "Well he has no emotions, that's what makes him a great leader, cold and calculating" I think (as someone who's seen the VN's too) "do you even watch this show?
That last line was so chilling 😰
And this is a perfect example of punishing "kill stealers" and/or "team killing traitors".
“Shame on the House of Ptolemies for such barbarity, shame. He was a CONSUL OF ROME!
A consul of Rome.. to die in this sordid way. Shame.”
The respect him and the prince shared over a cup of water really builds up to how angry he was. Even if they battled and the prince lost, I feel like ainze would've still given him a proper burial. Because of the actions they took to save themselves, ainz didn't want to save anyone. He was done with the whole rotten lot.
Similar to Alexander the Great, when traitors brought him through head of the King of Persia, he had them executed for betraying there ruler.
"Please accept this gift."
*Holds up a giant bag of kissass*
He gave his life, not for honor but for you. You being his people.
Snake eater?
I can't wait to see his fury unleashed. Doesn't have a reason to hold back anymore.
He wasn't going to hold back to begin with.
We already have though? Foresight managed to royally piss him off by lying to him and that dark aura was something else before the suppression kicked in. He kinda forgave them when he came back online because admittedly he was about to kill them and they had no way of knowing just what a sore spot that was.
Ainz was pissed here. Those nobles doomed their entire kingdom
Amazing that this guy was also Gero and Cooler in DBZ Abridged
Ainz sure keeps his promises.
as he sayed in s1 "i am a terrible Hypokrit"
Can’t stop watching this over lord anime it’s really amazing especially in both Dub and Sub!
aslong as it ain.t the german dub
-
in german he talks like a wigger
Ainz: You want to swear loyalty to me?
Nobles: Yes
Ainz: What about Zanac?
Nobles: We betrayed him
Ainz: Huh 😐
Imagine if the nobles were bullies and Zanac was the victim of being bullied, Ainz would be too furious.
Those nobles don't realize that they got a worst fate then death after betraying their king.
You hear Ainz. I hear monsieur Cooler.
Good lord, I like the sub, but Ainz's Dub voice just hits different.
Man, the dub was more chilling than sub.
God dude, Chris Guerrero is so good as Ainz, I knew he was good from little I saw him in DBZ Abridged, but seeing him in an actual dub just reminds of how good he does.
Love this Story, can’t wait for the next Episode.😍😍😍😍
