In 2005, 13 different MLB teams had a better record than the San Diego Padres. Somehow, San Diego was "good" enough to win the NL West division. Here's how it happened.

RIP original 2005 San Diego Padres Jolly Olive video 2021-2024
Youre a real one
Thought it was a reupload then saw the intro and got confused. Still am I guess.
Yummy
I was gonna say…
Sean Burroughs :(
"Opening day got off to a Rocky start" *Ryan Cohen screams in the distance*
"Won NL Championship Series (4-3) over I don't want to talk about it." That made me laugh. Great video.
Yadier homering in the top 9 of game 7 broke so many people😊
Mets 😂
This era of the Padres were the squad that got me into baseball. As I write this I looked up at my 2005 Padres plaque I got as a gift that year from my grandparents. Still got it up in my man cave.
There has existed a curse within San Diego sports since the beginning of time. We are hoping to break it one day.
No such thing as a curse.
Well, one day maybe the Chargers will break that cur…….
Oh yeah, never mind….
Yeah, it’s frustrating…but, hey, we get to live here! AINT no nicer place to be!😊
@@Zyron22Then you haven’t been paying attention to the history of San Diego Sports
Who knows, that time could be now
Not sure if you were counting 1981 or not, but the Royals snuck in with a losing record that year due to having two halves. They were bad the first half but managed to win their division the second half.
Might as well count 2020 then
@@antonioreconquistador I understand your point, but I think ‘81 counts a bit more than 2020 just because they still played over 100 games. Plus Jolly could’ve specified about ‘81 as well.
@@phanston31anything less than 162 games doesn’t count
@@therealjaystone2344 Yeah I guess you’re right. Just confused why he didn’t specify.
@@therealjaystone2344 well then nothing before 1960 counts lol
I know Mark Loretta gave you flashbacks making this video
This team was my childhood!! I remember crying because the Cardinals took it to Jake Peavy in the NLDS 😅
We FINALLY got past the damn Cardinals (who also beat us not only in 1996, our first playoff in 12 years, but YET again in 2006!) in 2020…only to get, stomped by the Dodgers…Man, 2022 was Fun revenge!
The 2006 Cardinals team had injuries all year. They had a very hot April start before they got decimated by injuries. They were 34-19 going into June. They finally got healthy at the end and a few of their pickups like Jeff Weaver are the reason they won it all. If they stayed healthy, they would have easily won 95 games.
A candidate for worst World Series winner: 1987 Minnesota Twins, negative run differential, only won 85 games
Braves only won 88 in 2021
Dodgers only won 43 in 2020 🐭
Dbacks last year only won 84 last year and they made it to the world series
You mentioned the '06 Cardinals, but you really should have brought up the 1987 Twins. They're the only team in MLB history to win the World Series after having a negative run differential during the regular season.
That cards team gets a bad rap but most don’t realize how beat up they were after being elite the previous 2 years. Outside of a few guys, The 87 Twins were a genuinely mediocre team that played way above their potential. 5 teams in mlb that year that had a better record and missed the playoffs. Pre wild card era obviously
I remember the 1987 Twins having several studs though - Puckett, Hrbek, Gaetti, and Viola
The 2005 padres could really use a guy like Ryan Schimpf
12:45 "The modern day Padres are as close as they've ever been to hoisting a World Series trophy." Excuse me? Losing the World Series (84 and 98) is a lot closer to winning it than just having some good players.
Considering they faced 2 of the greatest teams of all time in those World Series appearances, they really weren’t that close
Fun fact. The PA System was left on. Chrish Berman was the series commentator. While the PA system was still on you can hear him swearing at having to commentate on that horrid series.
Genuinely the funniest video you've done. Absolutely well done, sir.
As a fan of the Padres since I moved here in 1991 from New York, where I had been a fan of the New York Mets for my entire life since I was born the day, the Mets won the 1969 World Series… I think I found the ends of the 2007 and 2010 seasons much more painful than this one because no one expected anything from this team and we got nothing basically
The Ryan Klesko walkoff homer at the 5:00 mark was the first Padres game I ever went to with my dad at Petco 🥲🥲🥲
I may have missed it cause it's been a while since I saw the original vid you did on this team, but I never heard of the Peavy rib or Bochy tequila stories, that's hilarious lmao. I'll always enjoy hearing this season story, keep up the good work!
6:16 I remember that game thinking, "They're gonna stop this song. Aren't they?"
The pirates are going to offer Paul Skences a $14 million extension, joking of course the Pirates are not offering anyone any real money 😂
Jake Peavy was a heck of an athlete, diving for that pop up. He was on my team, the Red Sox, from 2013-2014. I think we traded for him at the deadline, then traded him away in 2014. I remember he couldn't see the catcher's signs because he wouldn't wear glasses or contacts at that point in his career. He did help us win a World Series. But these Padres remind me of the Red Sox this year, 75-75 with inconsistent play all year. But my team probably won't make the playoffs barring a miracle collapse of the Twins, Tigers, and Mariners and a 12 game winning streak for the Sox to end the season.
Oh my god just realized how underrated Brian Giles is. Very solid career numbers
He is also a true San Diegan as well
Didn’t you already do a video about this like last year or 2 years ago?
Yes, but I thought it didnt age well. Plus, theres a lot more new faces around here since 2021, so I figured, why not?
@@JollyOlive could you please do a video about rookies who best season was their rookie season and they dropped off.
@@the51geese38 that’s a good idea i like that.
This is why i love the NHL. Literally anything can happen in the playoffs. Top contenders get knocked off and mediocre teams gell to win it all.
True. But the only team to NEVER make it to the World Series is, sadly, the Seattle Mariners. [The Pilots didn't either, they moved to Milwaukee and became the Brewers who did make it in 1982.]
Milwaukee has never made it to the fall classic as an NL team.
Side note: I read somewhere that initially MLB wanted the Royals to move to the NL, and the Brewers to stay put.
We could’ve had the 14 and 15 World Series matchups be the NLCS, and maybe the Orioles and Blue Jays make a Fall Classic in the 2010’s.
Saw Jake Peavy later in his career at a spring training game. He was having a bad day and boy does he swear! I had to cover my baby’s ears! Still love the guy.
He is human.
These are some of the worst jerseys of all time
I remember that year well. As a life long Padre fan, I mostly just watched the mid 2000's because of Matt Vasgersion and Mark Grant. That was a great comedy duo. Good Times!
If 1994 didn't end with the player's strike, the AL West winner likely would have finished under .500 😅
The question I’d have is do the Mariners keep their momentum going.
They’d won nine of their last ten, and were only three games out when the season was stopped.
@@fortynights1513 Considering the Mariners would have played the rest of the 1994 season on the road due to the Kingdome’s roof repairs, I doubt it.
Me talking myself into Pedro Astacio as the No.2 starter
Damn. You really had to do my team like that Jolly?
I cant imagine Roberts now with that stache
Jake Peavy was a beast in the MLB Power Pros games.
I remember the retro night TV ad. Maddux was wearing his everyday casual wear...
Another great one from the Olive
I think it's worth noting that Peavey was likely used to and thought he was playing the censored version of I'm A Thug, which was often played on hip-hop radio and whose lyrics were changed to "Never trust a-" rather than "Motherfuck a-". Also, it's much less aggro sounding than you might expect if you haven't heard it - a very bright, bubbly, but still hype summer song. Honestly a great choice if not for the mix-up.
RIP Ryan Cohen
the biggest mistake the Marlins ever made.....trading Trevor Hoffman in his 2nd year for Gary Sheffield
Awesome video, i love the commercials you added!
Imagine if SD kept Bochy around.
I remember that. Skipping class in college to watch baseball. Good times.
Khali Greene was a wizard at short stop. This team made me fall in love with baseball and the padres.
😂 @ 0:44 seconds…. I’m a fellow Mets fan, I understand
I love when the flamboyant grape shines a light on pads history
If not for the strike season, we have almost certainly had a team with a losing record make the post-season as the Rangers were in first place with a 52-62 record. Thats insanely horrid
I know it’s with an asterisk, but in the 94 season the rangers were leading the west when the season ended while being 10 games below .500. At the time it was seen as the least competitive division ever
MLB should have a rule that any team with a losing record is automatically ineligible for the postseason. Even if they win their division, if they have a losing record, then their playoff spot goes to the team with the best record that hasn’t clinched one yet.
This years' standing are crazy close. 1st and 24th teams have 90 and 71 wins respectively.
I had no idea about the Hoffman and Bochy celebration story that's insane
Since the Padres hang up division winner banners and went 0-3 in the 2005 NLDS, they are the only team in MLB to fly a banner commemorating a year that they lost more games than they won.
According to legend they still win two games in a row ... and then lose two games. And then they win two games ... only to lose two games.
I would love a video on Edgar Martinez’s ‘95 season! With everyone talking about Ohtani becoming the first DH to win MVP, I’ve always felt that Edgar deserved one. There’s also a great storyline between coming off the strike season and the miracle season Seattle had. Edgar was the most valuable that season
From a Mariners fan, I would probably have given it to Albert Belle over Edgar that year.
But Belle and Edgar were both were more deserving than Mo Vaughn (very solid year on his part, but I don’t think he’d reach MVP caliber for me).
Also shoutout to John Valentin of Boston who led the AL in baseball reference WAR that year and wasn’t even an all star.
the 2006 cardinals may have the worst regular season record to win the world series however they actually had the second highest odds to win it all before the season even started
Jolly never apologize for the commercials, I love them
1981 Royals made it in the postseason due to the weird playoff structure due to the strike.
1:32 THE GILES BROTHERS! Roided out of their minds 😂
They might be the worst, but man, did it feel good to see these Padres highlights again. Phil Nevin was my favorite player of these early Padres, and Khalil Greene took his spot when Phil regressed. So much fun, pure vibes.
They could never make me hate you, mid-2000s Padres :)
Love your videos dude, you can see the hard work you put into each video. I would imagine gathering it all together and editing takes forever lol.
Hey jolly just suggesting a video on Bowden Frances who took two no-nos lost in 6 starts
I love the inclusion of those old commercials, haha! ❤
I need to know where you find these old commercials. Is there an archive for them somewhere or are you spelunking in the depths of UA-cam to find these gems???
MLB does the playoffs all wrong. The system they use know allows for the possibility 2 Wild Card teams facing off in the League Championship Series. They should have 4 Wild Card teams have a play-in series. The winner gets to be in the actual playoffs. It makes winning a division and playing the regular season legitimate and it eliminates the chances of 2 WC teams in the LCS. Have WC teams 1 vs 4 and WC teams 2 and 3 play a game on Monday after season ends. The winners of those games face each other in a game on Tuesday. Winner then goes to actual playoffs which start on Wednesday. Division winners are only sitting for 2 days waiting for WC play-in to take place. MLB doesn't know how to think outside the box. For example: Braves @ Padres - D'backs @ Mets, then winners play at home of highest remaining seed. That's pretty easy to understand and do.
I remember that team and how it seemed almost guaranteed they would have a losing record.
No Jolly, more old baseball commercials!!! (and less gambling ads!!!)
all I can think watching this is how much better the Padres uniforms look now compared to the old look. They looked so boring before with probably the most bland look uniforms in MLB. Now they have easily a top 5 uniform
Ive seen it all....7-9 division winners in the NFL, 37-39 win playoff teams in the NBA so ....
I lived in San Diego for 16 years. And a big Padre fan… That season was a tough season. You just never felt good about it. And of course they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals, which they had lost too many times before. I was at game four of that series.
My favorite what-if of baseball is the AL west of 1994. Every team was at least 10 games below .500 when the season ended. That would have definitely been the worst playoff team had that season ended properly
This year’s tigers team would definitely be one of the worst I’ve seen make the playoffs. Roster screams 77 wins
I remember this team, they were extremely mediocre, but had some fun top-tier players, just a very unbalanced team and were in a terrible division. Still they had some fun players to watch. Remember skipping school to watch the game 1 of the NLDS against the Cardinals, since it was weirdly like a day game in St Louis. A playoff game at like 12PM local time which was like 10AM west coast time on a week day. So weird. Peavy, who is still my favorite Padre ever, got torched and I knew it was season over. No need to watch the rest of that series. Cardinals won 3 games to 0.
The 1973 Mets went just 82-79, but came within one win of being World Series champs.
What are the best and worst divisions in the wildcard era by average record?
Can you make that video?
I remember seeing that 2006 Cardinals teams as a legitimate threat going into those playoffs only to see their record was barely over .500. that team was incredibly talented so that record really didn’t show how good they really were.
Of course we were the team that got in with 82 wins
Early 2000s baseball was 'out there' to say the least. NL West baseball in those days reminds me of AL Central ball, at least in terms of who was projected to win the division.
1981 Royals were 50-53 and made the playoffs thanks to the split season.
God I miss those uniforms and that diamond logo.
All offensive statistics should be measured in consideration of how awful petco was for hitters in its original layout
Should’ve had Ryan on this video.
13:01 as an A's fan I cannot say it is a fun time to be a west coast baseball fan
Mariners went 19 years without a playoff appearance in which they had 3 teams win at least 90 games and not make it (02, 03, 21). As a Mariners fan this just kind of made me feel sick.
In my memory, I legit remember San Diego being sub 500 that season, and I don't know why.
1981 Royals finished under .500 but that was the split season so they were above .500 in the second half.
That east coast shade ain’t gonna save you from this heat Mr. Not so Jolly olives
Jesus this video just has a litany of names I haven’t heard in 20 years
I would love to see a deep dive into the Blue Jays history from you.
I know exactly what a bad Padres team looks like I’ve seen plenty. The 2024 Padres are not a bad team. They are very fun to watch.
best playoff team video incoming
That’s Chris Young in the second commercial right?!?!
NL east and NL west are monsters.
If the 1994 season wasn’t canceled, the team that won that division would be the worst playoff team.
God I miss Khalil Greene. He was my generations Tatis Jr.
I remember that team bc I’m a Mets fan and we actually had a better record that year and missed the playoffs
Talking record, yes, but the worst has got to be the combined 2022-23 Tampa Bay Rays. In 4 games they scored a grand total of 2 runs and were outscored in those 4 games(obvious wild card sweeps) 14-2.
I don't know, the 2005 Padres postseason performance was still pretty pitiful. While they were outscored "only" 21-11 in that series, 5 of those runs came after already being down 8-0 late in Game 1, 2 runs came after being down 4-0 and 6-1 late in Game 2, and the last 4 runs came after going down 7-0 in Game 3. They never scored a single run when they weren't already down 4+ runs in the game
Stop the gambling ads and I will come back to watch.
Probably Giles 4-5th best season wouldn't say arguably his best
The padres had winning seasons from 2004-2007.
What happened to the other Padres playoff video??
As a dodgers fan, I’m glad it’s the much hated madres 😂😅
7:28 EDWIN ENCARNACIÓN!!!!!!
