At the time construction started in 1948, the artist estimated the work would be complete in 30 years.
As of 2022, there was no timeline for when the monument would be completed; however, the hand, arm, shoulder, hairline, and top of the horse's head were estimated to be finished by 2037.

I have visited Crazy Horse Monument several times over my lifetime. First, in 1974 with my parents, I remember it was just kind of an outline still. The second time was in 1977 when I was married and we went with friends. The third time was in 2000 with a friend and we spent the whole day touring the workshop and watching historical videos. The shops were gorgeous, but, I couldn't get over how much more had been done to the carving. I remember one of the guides saying it wouldn't be done in our lifetimes if they keep the schedule and construction as it is.

I have mixed emotions about it in a way, more than Rushmore. The Black Hills are a sacred place, but then a Lakota Chief did give them permission to do it. The traditional story is that this is where braves go and stay waiting for their eyes to adjust to the glorious sight of the happy hunting ground. But in another way, seeing Crazy Horse is a great reminder of so much and so many events that he was part of, and if I was just looking at a blank mountain it wouldn’t be the same, it’s more sacred now in a way. Just my opinion.

According to the website, there is a fault by Crazy Horse's finger that goes down to the horse's mane. The sculptors had to alter the design so that instead of Crazy Horse pointing with his hand upright, it will have the palm flat on the horse's head. That means more time to sand and shape the finger. Otherwise if they went with the original design, the finger could snap off.

I think that's kind of the reason it hasn't progressed. It relies on tourist dollars and donations. It's a non-profit as per the designers wishes. They do pull in a lot of money per year, but now it's even tougher to hired workers for it. It's too bad. I really thought that when I visited in the 1980's it would have been finished as well.

@@therealistintheboot8822 You speak in the language of foreign bullshit. You sent your message too early in the United States. Observation shows otherwise with regards your laughable "incredibly unfinished and not very good" remark. It is indeed very much like the Mount Rushmore faces, which are just faces. ua-cam.com/video/KDpWyDOMfWs/v-deo.html

We were disappointed during our visit last week. Worst $20 we ever spent. Progress seems dormant. I feel like we were ripped off. At this rate it will never be finished. Rushmore only took 14 years.

I’ve wanted to see it since I first heard of it as a child in the 1970’s. I got as close as Mt.Rushmore in 1984 with my mom but she said it’s too far, let’s go back to our hotel in Rapid City. Later I found out it’s just minutes away from Mt.Rushmore.

OK I am starting to agree with those who say this is a scam. I looked it up - Mt. Rushmore took 14 years - 1927 to 1941. I think technology has advanced somewhat? I remember seeing the profile in the mid 90s. Some here are saying the family is take $ and doing nothing. I am starting to believe them.
