Holy shit. I've been here for 5 years (age 17 to 22 now) and this connects the dots between so many israeli cultural differences from my American upcoming.
They take for granted they live in the only Jewish country in the world. Jews fought for 2000 yrs to have this. Even if you're secular you don't realize that you come from a tribal society and you will feel very lonely in large individualistic countries and you will usually end up hanging with other israelis and dreaming of one day returning to Israel with a lot of money.
I've had this experience. People really don't understand those who wish to move from rich mega-economies to small countries with few opportunities. The reason is that people get sick of the noise and pressure and want a more calm, simple and natural existence. People also don't understand those who wish to explore and live among less common cultures.
Exactly. It's as simple as that. The main reason is the high cost of living in Israel (we do however have universal healthcare unlike the US). I haven't been to Australia but I believe it's considered to be on the top of many lists regarding the quality of living. And it has much better weather than most other countries starring in these lists (cold European countries, Canada). It's a huge country with small population while Israel is tiny and crowded and people here are relatively nervous compared to "Western" countries. Therefore it seems to us like a strange decision esp if you're not Jewish, but also if you are a secular Jew.
Try Brazil. I went to MIT, Georgetown, and Brown, I've written my own programming language, and have 16 years of experience in a hot field. The locals give you no points for that - you're at best a threat. If you're so great, why are you here? It was so difficult to get jobs that paid significantly less than American jobs that I had to work remote. The attitude that one's country just isn't all that harms not only the people who live in that country, but also the people who want to get involved with that country. If you encounter this, just work around it.
I’m Danish and I can totally relate to this when I meet someone from a fancy place like e.g. California. Like when people come to a cold place like Denmark to live, study etc...
As for immigrating to Israel, Jews are encouraged to do so - it's called aliyah. As far as I am aware they get a lot of government assistance for doing so because it helps to increase the Jewish population.
Malcolm Tyler Absolutely. Denmark is full of opportunities and it’s a nice place to live, but the locals might think it gets too small and boring and therefore we want to explore life elsewhere. As well as for financial reasons, a great part of business owners settle in Switzerland.
Malcolm Tyler I know this already. It seems like only Jews are allowed to move to Israel to live, because they are safe there. I think it’s sad in general when various ethnic/religious groups are being discriminated against. In the end we are human beings and should treat each other well.
@@LanaRusicTV well, Israel being the "holy land"; "the promised land of God to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob"... So yeah, it very much has a lot to do with religion and besides Israelites go to war almost endlessly with their neighbors(even today) since they started claiming the "promise land".
Small country identity. Us Finns can totally relate. We're always super interested in what other nationalities think about us. @Carl Von Finland Young culture. Slavic tendencies. I personally don't care what U.S. does or thinks. It is much nicer to meet a Finnish tourist than an American. There's your answer.
I am an American Israeli and the only way I can deal with this nonexistence, on the part of Israelis, is to ignore their crap when it comes my way verbally and to realize that this culture here is not completely 'hard wired.' But I never try to be like Israelis who are born here. I don't want to. Furthermore, these people don't really accept you "as one of them" unless you went to high school with them and have served in the IDF., so it's a lost cause, That's OK by me., I am me and I am OK just the way I am without trying to be like anybody else, BTW: My Hebrew is excellent. It's not only the language that is the main barrier to becoming "Israeli" but it's a real cultural difference.
I agreed with her up to the part about value. As an Israeli, I'm always surprised by immigration from rich, western countries Because A life here is considered very hard, economically, unlike Australia where the minimum wage is almost 3 times the Israeli one (I lived there for one year and was amazed to see how easy it is to live there) and B because it's simply a "sanctuary for Jews" and it's not a place you can just immigrate to, unless you're Jewish. So it's just very surprising. Not at all about "failing in the big world".
Every nation has its own culture and behavior that may not be like your own culture. Even the plants and animals look different when you go to other countries. So, just enjoy and learn the differences
Thats untrue When we wonder why someone would go from "the big world" to Israel - it has nothing to do with judging the person doing so and trying to figure if he's good enough. Complete misconseption. What we really asking is - Why the hell would you choose to leave a better place and come to this aggressive, overtaxing, rude state. Its so damn hard to live in Israel. People are rude and aggresive here. The brotherhood zionists imagine doesn't really exist here. In Israel everyone is for himself. Service is horrible in Israel and you constantly have to fight with everyone to take care of yourself. Taxes are extremly high, salaries are low, living expenses are high, which creates a sad lifestyle of living to work and paying taxes. If you want to live the rat race, chase your tail financially, be in a constant war with the whole world, live in a jungle in which the strongest survives and the least is being eaten, pay extremely high housing prices (you"ll be lucky to even get a mortgage since you need to have an enourmous amount of cash upfront, oh and of course live in a place where every couple years there's war - come to Israel. My recommedtation, as an 100% Israeli who was born here, lived between the age of 4 to 12 in europe, came back here and lived the rest of my life until this point here is simple: If you are a jew who lives in Canada, USA, Europe - think a thousand times before making an aliyah. Life in Israel is really harsh, and its definetly not the best place to live. The brotherhood of jews is a myth, you wont feel it here.
And brazilians. I would always think to myself "why the hell is this american/australian/european in Brazil, of all places ? He must not be good at whatever work he used to work in his original country".

If that would be true, that would be almost funny. Because I do not really like this Kind of Attitude. But it really makes Sense.. I guess.. And even when I hear that Israelis visit my Country, I totally ask myself the exact same Thing: _Why are they here_ ??? Because I simply do not understand it. It does not make any Sense to me.. And I ask myself Questions like: Did / couldn't they not find a nicer Place on this Planet? Went something wrong with another Destination and they had no better Option left but to visit my Country? Could they not afford anything better? And Things like that. :/
I don't know where you live, but many Israelis travel to many counyries. You would find Israelis in any accessible country on Earth. It makes some people think that our population as much larger than it teally is.
I went to Israel a Couple of times from Sweden. Once try to get a citizenship. This was hard and i left. People in Israel needed to question my choice. So i went to Israel and ran out of money and needed to leave. Yes Israelis don't understand People coming from better countries economically. Like the US, Australia, Norway, Sweden, Canada etc. Like if Israel is such an easy place to live in its not. Its hard to get a Good job in Israel. So Israelis don't understand People that wont to Settle for less. Israel is that Nice Lovely place when you come to in your 20years old life. Experience the kibbutz life and so. Than as it nowadays every 5 person in Israel is unemployed. So one has to figure out from outside how and why to make it in Israel.
@Tirtza Gabay yes sort of in Israel i can get a citizenship because of something that is called law of return. But once i get to a very Jewish place in Israel they don't consider me as a Jew. Because in Israel you are a Jew from the mother not the father in my case. If being Jewish is not being directly a Jew but somehow being half or connected somehow to the Jewish people i get in there instead. There is a priority in Israel i Think to bring the real Jews to Israel first. I come like a second choice. If there is two People including me and the next person in my place is real Jew from both parents he gets more help than me to move to Israel.
What about if you're a Jewish person and you see the whole world decaying around you and return of the antisemitic sickness multiplying around the world.....Isn't it a Jewish belief that there place should be in their only Jewish sanctuary called ISRAEL, before they die? Exactly, Emil, the quality of life does not equal amount of wage. At least, for a big portion of people -not.
