I knew a blonde/blue eyed Russian woman born in Harbin in the 1930s. She said a lot of Russians used to live there. She was in her 80's when I met her in the US. She immigrated to the US when she was 30 yrs old.
I was born and raised in Hong Kong. As a southerner, I really don’t know what it’s like to live in an environment of -22°C 🥶🤧. After watching your video, I decided to travel to Northeast China this winter!
hey fellow Konger. as a former Canadian who has lived in Dalian and visits Siberia in winter for fun, i recommend wear a surgical mask behind a good thick scarf. it'll help with breathing, both for temperature and moisture retention. also get used to using moisturizing facial masks when you're back in the hotel at night. vaseline on the hands. if it gets below -20, exposed skin can easily start cracking. knuckles can begin to bleed just from opening and closing your hands. eyelashes can break off between the moisture of your breathe and the freezing cold air. just some friendly advice. enjoy Dongbei.
Let me tell you this, when I walked there at -25° in the evening for 5 min, my face was freezing, and in another 5 min, my face was so hurt like someone cutting it, and then, I couldn’t feel my face anymore 😂
Who would have thought it, but most people grow up with the image of red, green and floral clothing from the Northeast as old-fashioned and ugly. But now instead, they are used as the local iconic pattern, along with a variety of creative works and clothing. This pattern is really ushering in a total victory after many years. The two girls are really quite cute in their red and green floral hats
it's just like when you have just come to Australia for the first time, and you buy a t-shirt with the huge word "Australia" printed in front of it and put it on, then you will get comments like "this is really lame..." from your friends...
Amy always brings excitement to her episodes . In her opening scene , if Amy didn't mentioned it was a morning market , I would have thought it was a night market . Kerry looked like she was ready for a venti latte warming up in a Starbucks ( lol ) . She's definitely a trooper . @13:33 Too bad Derk wasn't able to join Amy . Would've loved to hear his opinion on the sausage.
“Lao mao zi” is how the early settlers in Dongbei called the Russian people who came across the border to settle or trade, can be loosely translated into “the hairy dudes/people”😂, might sound not as PC in this day and age but the Chinese people use it in a non-derogatory and lighthearted way today.
I mean, HKers still use the G word. Dongbei, esp Heilongjiang, still uses 'er mao zi' too in day to day convo. I'd say it's still very much derogative. But it's a fact of life in such homogenous societies.
I love that fabric too. I bought about nine metres of it in Vietnam in 2009. I thought I'd make a bedspread out of it but now I use it for wrapping gifts or putting over the lids of jam jars.
This video is so fun to watch. It really feels like you two are my friends and we're walking through the market together even though I'm just watching.
Harbin is really famous for its red sausage. There are various harbin sausage and one of the best is feng gan chang(wind dried sausage). It looks like tasty stick sausage in Australia but taste quite different.😄
Great to see you girls having fun. We enjoyed Harbin. It doesn't take long to get there from Changchun by fast train. Yes it was chilly minus 25 when we visited the Ice sculptures. There are so many different dishes and types of food from different parts of China. With it being so cold all the food for Spring Festival can be stored in the back porch. Today here in Queensland we had Doujiang. A soy bean porridge. We are looking forward to returning to Changchun next year. Huitou jian
youtube started to suggest your video and I subscribed immediately. This is one of your many vlog that I have binged within 24 hrs. Love your content. You have a vibe that is just chill, casual and authentic. I have never subscribe someone so quickly, like straight after the first video.
My family used to own a seafood restaurant on MaJia street. I think it was called JaHe. It’s in our old apartment building that we used to live in so it’s like 5 stories tall. I think it’s still there. You should check it out. Best live seafood in Harbin.
Thank you for the video 😊 I don't know if you used to give pricing and then stopped but having prices would help us understand what life is really like out there 😊 Thanks
To answer your question, when you eat cold things in summer your body wants to warm you up. Therefore hot drinks etc cool you down. This is possibly why Chinese eat cold in winter to warm up.
Even for like 30-40 years ago most family don't have their own refrigerator so the best time for them to enjoy ice cream is winter time, like Amy said in the video" no need for a freezer". That is the main reason.
The sausages in Harbin is actually Ukrainian. In the 19th century, imperial Russia moved a large population of Ukrainians and others from eastern Europe to east Asia, in order to consolidate control over the area. Ukrainian migrants brought their cuisines with them, and thus, the sausages.
Just went to the Snow and Ice festival! It really is the coolest thing I've ever seen (no pun intended). The morning market is really nice too. Yes, the festival was busy, but not that bad. It's just so big.
I was just in China visiting families. And the thing I miss the most is strawberries. The strawberries in Canada are just awful including some pretty expensive ones I tried.
Have always wanted to visit Heilongjiang. A pity the former Soviet community in that region has long moved away. Would've made an ethnolinguistically diverse and interesting place.
Ooh, I'd try everything! I actually ordered lataio on Amazon Canada and didn't realize it was wheat gluten; my poor digestive system 😂 Happy Lunar New Year 🎊
When it comes to sausages, as a local, I have been raised to eat quilin lidaosi sausage, which is the most prestigious brand of hongchang. They also have other kinds of sausages that I really like to buy. Hope you could try more food in Harbin.
Interesting fact. I see that Harbin is so cold and at -22 C. Harbin's Latitude is around 45 N. My area in the Northwest of the US is around 47 N. I'm already as north as Russia, but my temperature is around 7 C. I only need to put on one jacket.
China winter is incredible cold because of Siberia cold wind. They are much colder than Hokkaido Japan, Europe and America. The coldest place in China is Mohe. At sea level it can reach as low as -60C not to mention mountain areas even colder.
It is because you live in west side with Pacific ocean and Rocky mountains to adjust the temperature. I lived in East side of Canada, it is much colder
Since the introduction of the Wildlife Protection Law in China, Northeast Chinese cuisine has been in name only because most of its main ingredients are wild animals, such as bear's paw and hazel chicken, which are protected animals and cannot be eaten now. Half of the recipes in Northeast Chinese cuisine are protected wild animals, so there are not many famous dishes in Northeast China nowadays
hi hi! recently discovered your youtube and im loving it! im visiting harbin this December, im trying to locate this market in google maps, but when i enter Hong zhuan morning market google map directed me to Harbin Hongchang Flagship store. is this correct tho? Any google maps that i can use thats in english in china/harbin? thank you loads and i love all your videos!
As someone who lives in new england, drinking ice coffee throughout the winter is extremely common. I think it’s cause the drink often is still warmer than it is outside.
As soon as I saw that sausage at the end I thought: looks like polosh Kiełbasa! Honestly it might have some maybe russian heritage, since it's also partly a slavic country and you mentioned Harbin's history with Russia. In Poland sausages (called Kiełbasa) look like this after being cooked on a grill
Winter is actually the peak season for carbonated drinks and ice cream in Harbin, because the heating ventilation at home is so dry and people wants their mouth to be moisturised
I just love how chaotic Chinese North Eastern videos are. It's like these people live and relish in pure chaos and I love it so much, these are definitely kindred spirits! The hats, THE HATSSS and that loud Xmassy but not really fashionnn
The sugar-coated carrot is what I'd imagine a health nut would serve their kids for dessert... The great thing about the smoky sausage is that it won't go flaccid, even in subzero temperatures. ;)
Thank you for your vlogs! I'm going on my year abroad to China this year and watching your videos makes me so excited to go there :)

That pattern was for bed sheets or covers. No one wear that in northeast of China before.
Fashion is well known to have cycles.
The ice cream doesn’t need a freezer…just like those creamy strawberries, another food that cuts out the middleman! :D

It's not insulting, so it doesn't apply...calling an Asian person yellow is a bit different...
that Goodday mate is so spot on!!!

It’s like super refreshing to eat ice cream when it’s cold! And it never melts so your not speed eating it before it melts.
😵 I wanna try that creamy strawberries so bad!!!
Love how u show us the food, very interesting food there. I am interested in visiting harbin one day,

Red sausage is great, but dry sausage (干肠gan chang) is also perfect tasting for me! You can eat it with Harbin beer which is German style/technology.
