Today I'm 'challenging' myself to eat for an entire day in Changchun (the city I'm currently living in China) for under $5USD. Next time I'll choose a harder challenge because I ate like a QUEEN!

that is mostly fast food for work lunch. all the dishes are bulk cooked, not as good as separately cooked ones. if you are traveling and have enough time for a decent lunch, "normal" restaurant may be a better choice. the problem is in northeast China, all dishes is in super large portion, if you travel alone you may not be able to try much variety in one meal.

Ketchup used to be FREE back in the 1960s in Australia when you bought a hot meat pie or a Cornish pasty. Hot meat pies were the "bomb" during the cold winter months in Melbourne and used to cost only AUD$0.40 cents. Meat pies used to be Australia's staple food snack. They are now $3.50 for a cold one and around $6.95 - $7.95 for one sitting under a heat bar taken out of an oven while ketchup is extra!

That make me so sad. I was sitting here thinking about eating breakfast in Canada. Banh Coun $9.95, and a bowl of Pho $16.50 total $25.50 plus you add tax ($4 to $5) to that. I think over the $5 budget test. lol I will have a light lunch and dinner, mostly Air and water...

Don't be sad - we have the same high cost of living here in Sydney, Australia, with rising inflation. Must be something to do with capitalism, perhaps, as we find the West are all experiencing the same high cost of living?

Don’t get too big for your purse, Amy. One USD/day would be only 7 RMB, so that’s asking a lot. Also, if you wanted a challenge, add drinks to the cost of 5 USD/day.

"Maccas" (Micadees - McDonald's) USED to be a source of cheap fast food but not any longer. Far too costly these days for a piece of ground beef in a bun.
