  • If you think a Belgian Malinois is a perfect fit for you but your not sure.
Watch this video. This is how and what a Belgian Malinois will do if left alone for to long unsurpervised. not necessarily (carpet) but destruction.
I was in a hurry and did not do the proper things before leaving my dogs at home. not following my usual routine.
Good dogs, just a general oversight in what happens when you do not plan right.
(this was only a one time isolated incident. )
    my mistake, was costly.

We have a 3 yr old Border Collie(raised from a puppy) & a Mal puppy(3 weeks now)-so far the BC wins the Destruction Derby hands down. The BC is fine now, but he was hell on wheels as a puppy. Not saying the Mal puppy is perfect-hell she's into everything. One thing to consider, we have wood & tile floors-so no carpets to tear up. We didn't plan it that way-just got lucky. The only damage (with both dogs) has been coffe table & dining room chair legs, occasional baseboards, shoes, slippers, etc. We have to be very careful with power cords because we have 220, that could get real nasty. They're not home alone much because they just love to go-Anywhere (even the vet-unbelievable, I know)!

Amen Brother. I have two Malinois and I've grown up with many other types of dogs, including huskies, GSD and border collie (working/herding breeds). Malinois are by far the most incredible dogs but by far the most high energy and in return the most destructive. Do most breeds have this potential yes but with Malinois (and husky) it's pretty much a guarantee. People have a lot to say that don't understand the breed. A) They require an incredible amount of training and time and even still you will run into problems along the way especially if they are under 2-3 years old. B) most people who own or train Malinois will strongly advise against crating for long periods of time when you aren't home (crating at night is different). They are capable of seriously injuring themselves, causing extreme anxiety and in turn making them aggressive. C) Just tearing up your carpet and saying problem solved is a laugh... they will find something else.
These problems are easily solved by vigorous exercise before leaving a Malinois at home (they will literally run for a ball until they die). I do this and can leve my dogs at home for 6hrs np. Not everyday mind you but they are also a bit older.
People are missing the point of this video, which I truly understand because I live it everyday.
His dogs aren't bad dogs or doing anything that a Malinois wouldn't do. He's just showing how much work they are. That one time you don't exercise them enough and you leave that home a little to long because your a human being with things to do... they will tornado your house. And if you get a Malinois, especially as a first time dog owner because they are cool and you think you are just going to leave them at home like a shitzu they will ruin your life and in return you will ruin theirs.

My Dog is a Malinois crossed with a border collie. If I don't walk him twice a day, either a long walk or half an hour running he just paces around looking for trouble....and by trouble I really mean attention, so he'll take things for me to chase him and play a game!!! But if he gets his walk I can go out all day and he sleeps until I'm home. He sleeps a lot when I am home but normally in whatever room I go into. So intelligent, he knows so many words and such good fun. I also do treasure hunts where I hide about 10/15 small treats in a room and he finds them....it uses up a lot of energy.

100% your fault lol. You know its your fault. Rule of thumb: Under 1-year old, in crate to sleep and unsupervised. Under 2-years old can sleep out of a crate but in a crate when unsupervised. After 2-years old you have a dog that won't destroy anything. I have a Mal and she has NEVER chewed or destroyed anything. Follow this rule of thumb, you'll be fine. @coquette.commentary 3 роки тому +10

Cushite Calisthenics Crate training isn’t cruel or inhumane, it’s a very helpful tool in raising a secure and non-destructive dog. You can’t just shove them in a bare kennel only whenever you’re going to leave, and expect them to love the whole concept. The point is to make their crate somewhere they *want* to be in, when you’re leaving AND when you’re at home. Make it comfortable with blankets and toys, not too small or too big for the dog, and make the association pleasant. A crate can be a good place to nap, a place to retreat to when there’s a lot of company over and they need somewhere to be alone, and it’s fine to keep them in there for a few hours (not a whole 8+hr workday of course) so they won’t be left unattended in the house when they’re young. If you can’t make it back during the day to let them out and exercise them, arrange to have a friend, family member, roommate (ehh not fond of this one) or even hire a dog sitter/walker to drop in and make sure they have plenty of time to get out and stretch their legs and potty during the day. It’s not difficult to arrange, but you have to have the social and/or financial support to make it work (both of which you should always consider when getting any dog, especially a puppy).
Raising a well-mannered puppy isn’t difficult if you know what you’re getting into, and utilizing training tools in the most effective way.

They are a great breed. This was a one time incident. This was just to show what kind of damage they really can do. Not all mals are high energy or high driven. But they do get bored easily. The truth they can be really easy to train and easier to screw up. Every owner has and will screw up some time or another with any breed. So good luck, if I was to give you any advice. Have an out incase you can not train or get training that the pup can either be returned to the breeder or to someone who knows about belgians. No one wants to pay 1200 or plus for a pup , then turn around and lose it to a pound.

He chewed up a lot of shoes and a couple of his beds when we first got him but never destroyed our carpet or any furniture we crate trained him when he was younger and now he behaves perfectly left home alone outside of the crate for up to 10 hours. That being said i do have people go and check on him while im gone but with enough exercise toys and a doggie door he keeps himself out of trouble for up to 5 or 6 hours at a time without being checked on. own one also.- and boredom is the only real issue.
I di track with my dog all day and am taking my 3mo male through ptsd service dog training.
even the basic drills for becoming a service dog really help "owners" of this breed keep them busy.
they just want to have fun, work, eat and love like we do is all.
as an owner if you get bored easily and struggle with your own schedule, keep in mind they will be bored too! lol

I have a 9 month old belgian malinois. He is very large and very muscular. He is a beautiful dog. He is very aloof . He loves me and I love him. I have many times thought if giving him away. He does what he wants when he wants so he thinks. I have to be very stern with him for him to comply at times. He can be very destructive when bored and left alone. He costs me about a $100 + a month with what he destroys. Im working on being more disciplined in training him and exercising him. It's my fault. I love him wont give up on him and will be successful in him becoming obedient for his safety. I love him

Great Video. I have had Malinois since 2001. I left a 9 month old home alone in a soft crate for 15 minutes while I went across the street to the pet store for another kennel. He chewed through the soft kennel (80.00), chewed his brand new Foster and Smith Orthopedic dog bed (200.00), drugged a tree house plant and deposited it in the pot, on top of his newly destroyed new dog bed. I just started to train in the soft crate, which is why I left for only 15 minutes. Me dumb. I told my agility trainer about my financial loss, and she said, "How very nice of you to give your dog such nice chew toys!" Great dogs, but they will teach you every step of the way. This same dog broke my finger during tracking training at 9 months of age. This dog was from show lines, not even working lines. Do not fall into false security about show line Malinois. They are still a Malinois !!! This boy became AKC first triple champion Malinois (CH in Herding, Agility, and Breed). He lived to 17 years of age, and his name was Jammer. Rest in peace my Son.

I have a Belgian Malinois and people don’t understand when I tell them I can’t crate her for long or leave her alone for long periods of time. She really is only suited for a family with a very active lifestyle and not for someone who is a couch surfer because if that was the case my house would look like yours and she would tear it up. Dogs shouldn’t be left alone free in the house until they are at least 2 years old. Also they should always sleep in their crate until they are 1 year old. This helped me a lot with my German shepherd. Got it from Larry Krohn.

We had the same issue with German shepherd. We had him crate trained for while we were at work and slowly started to leave him out of his kennel after about 7 months for an hour or 2. He did great for about a month but then started to chew up the carpet so we went back to the crate. Eventually my wife ended up picking up a kitten so now he has a companion and we haven't had an issue since then. Now he's a little over 1 and I can leave him inside all day with no issues

We have a malinois x greyhound called Bentley and he is a wonderful boy! He needs a firm hand, lots of exercise, love and play. He needed a lot of training and work when we first had him, but has become a wonderful friend and companion who is very loving and protective of us, particularly our eight year old daughter. If she is upset about anything he runs over and cuddles up with her until she cheers up at which point he fetches his ball and drops it next too her! He is very energetic and tires out his beagle adopted brother and he is an amazing watchdog who is alert to the slightest sound day or night. Malinois are amazing dogs, but not for beginners.

I have a 4 year old Mal. I've had him for just over 3 years. He spent quite a while at the shelter and failed two previous re-homing attempts, owing mostly to his high drive and destructive tendencies. The second attempt to re-home him ende after their family dog attacked him and he ate a hole through the kitchen wall and escaped. I must confess that the first year or so wa trying. He demolished the yard, ate countless number of socks, jeans, shirts, wires, the vacuum cleaner, books, mail, dining room chair leg etc etc.... But today I can leave him alone at home in excess of 8 hrs, which I do 3 days a week regularly, and he does not touch anything anymore. I seal off access to all rooms except my bedroom where he sleeps, I open the front door but double lock the front security door; this way he can see what goes on on the outside and can keep an eye on the gate, but can't get out that way. He has access to the back yard. I food-proof the entire house and lock the fridge. He jumps the back fence regularly but never when I'm not home (I have cameras). Even then he always comes back within 20 min or so. All our neighbours are used to him doing this now. I guess I lucked out though I get him quite tired and mentally stimulated very early each day. We run a minimum of 4 miles early morning and I do nosework with him at least 5 sessions a week, evenings. This is my second Malinois and I don't think I will ever own another breed lol.

Since that time a year ago, I've learned a LOT. We even use different food now, yet I'll be forever thankful for that crate advice. Last night, I thought I could give him a towel to rest on at night in the crate, because it was cold and he used to love them as a small pup. I'd stopped giving them to him when he started chewing the edges because threads can be dangerous to their GI tract - but he's more than a year old now. Two nights with a towel, no problem. He arranged it to his liking and slept on it, curled up like a big kitty. However, last night, he chewed it to pieces, and now I'm worried about him - all due to my foolishness.

@Seasexnsun There's some truth to this but you're also wrong. Dogs are dogs, when they decide they want to tear up your furniture, they will do so and won't think twice about it. When your dogs are left unattended it is your responsibility to cage them up; this protects you and your dog.
I have a husky and guess what... he gets plenty of exercise and if I leave him alone for 30 mins he gets curious and starts to seek out his own activities to do. So the answer is to crate when you aren't home because that not only keeps your house safe but also your dog.

😊 I agree, We had a Siberian Husky, German Shepperd and a tiny teacup yorkie terrier.
      Most dogs are destructive.
All 3 dogs were crate trained. When we went out, we had extra large kennels set up in the garage and that is where they would stay, until we returned. ( the door did need to be closed )
Prior too us leaving the house for a the day....
they were walked, and then we ran with them after, tossed a ball for them to fetch
      20x for each.
A bit of water... they were golden.

The craziest ones (also the most spectacular and amazing) are the ones that come from working lines, somewhat agressive in general (they have to be), demanding, imposing, human like-intelligence and very strong minded, plus they are larger, thick-built and tons of energy and strenght,,. a real nigthmare for unexperienced and lazy-weak owners, can't have them without solid training. constant discipline and a job to do

It's true ... I have one and he is a lovely dog, full of energy and incredibly intelligent. One day I was walking my basset hound and “Pascual” starter to follow us, I open my gate and he went inside, that's all; became my dog.
Look for its owners, I mean, a purebred dog must have owners, but they didn't show up. The vet noticed that he had some scars on his neck, so I suppose they tried to train him but with violence and cruelty. This breed needs good training, daily activity, and lots of TLC. All the bad reputation is for bad owners, who are not willing to work with them.
I adore my Belgian shepherd but he is very active. So think two or three times if this breed is for you

This is why responsible dog owners should crate train. The digs need a secure spot that is theirs and only theirs. Where they can feel anxiety free when alone.
I own and professionally train BelMals for pet, protection and sport and none of them have ever caused destruction
Just because you've taught them basic commands does not mean they are well trained, obviously. These are dogs that don't have leadership they don't have security in their place in the family.
Takes a lot more then basic obedience and commands

You are so right about this breed, @Monkey and Mazikeen. I have adopted a 5-year old malinois and realized that having an active lifestyle is not enough to drain the energy of this kind of dog. I also didn't know i have the potential to be a dog trainer until my own dog showed me how easy it is to be one on him. With a malinois, an acre of land for them to run and play is almost mandatory if you plan to get and love this beautiful dog.

  • @Stylece

I own a Belgium Malinois female for 5 years now. I have to say what you're saying is not true at all. I can leave her at my house for 4hours and nothing will happen, though : In the first 6months i had her, she did exactly what you are saying. I was sleeping woke up just to see a huge hole in our couch, everything was torn apart. I made her understand that this is not what she is supposed to do and ever since then she didn't destroy anything but some pillows out of pure joy. She sometimes is just so joyful, grabs a pillow and wants to be hunted, runs away with it and just tears it apart. But saying that you can't leave the dog alone for 4 hours is not necessarily true. At least for my dog, that rule does not apply. Great Dogs by the way, your female is beautiful

    • @monkeymazikeen6098

This also was a one time isolated incident. Of course you kind of lost me on what you were saying. You can leave yours for 4 hours and all is good, yet while you were sleeping on the couch, your dog chewed a hole in it. Then the pillows also were torn up while you were home? So... I've missed something. Not attacking you by any means. Just trying to understand. So she is an angel when you are gone, and a stinker when your home?

@@monkeymazikeen6098 Don't worry, i wouldn't take that as a personal attack unless you are as immature as our friend Thomas ! The hole in our couch was done when we had her about 4 weeks. We got her from a Turkish household where they had a couple of generations at home. Her initial owner was working shifts. He was the kind of guy that buys a Malinois because they look 'dangerous', probably as well because of their superbe reputation. Them being super smart etc. The owners dad had to take care for her at some point and he did not know anything about the breed, never took her out on walks, basically kept her with all the high energy children in the house. The dog was super confused when we met her. You did see imidiately that she was not trained at all. Anyway, she was my 1st dog aswell and i have to say that i was totally overwhelmed with her aswell. I took it that far saying that i need to get rid of the dog. But we decided against it and i am totally happy about it. Started educating myself and training her. She is by far not perfect, but i am super happy about where we at right now. She knows multiple commands, knows her place etc.
She almost never destroys anything in the house anymore. The pillow situation is this : Sometimes, after waking up or eating food she gets super excited ( i realize that her energy lvl after us humans sleeping for 8h is probably at it's peak and she explodes when seeing her humans waking up, knowing THE DAY IS STARTING LET'S GO PLAY WORK) and grabs a pillow. She starts running away with it and wants us to play catch. She lays down on the ground when you approach her and when you close up to her, she gets up and starts running away like a maniac. In that process she tears the pillow apart, for instance when we stop running after her or just while running away. Not always though. If i get fed up with it, i tell her to stop in a tone she knows, like : Ok, FUN STOPS HERE I GOTTA LISTEN TO DADDY :D. And sometimes i really don't care and let her just destroy it.
She's basically an Angel all around. Whether i am gone or at home doesn't matter. She has some playtime during the day and we also train anything between 1-2h 30min a day, every day 7 times a week.
