Today, we are addressing the topic of whether or not a Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherd, Lackenois, or dog of similar type, is a good choice for an individual or a family.
The Malinois is a medium-to-large breed of dog, sometimes classified as a variety of the Belgian Shepherd dog rather than as a separate breed. The name "Malinois" is derived from Malines, the French name for the breed's Flemish city of origin, Mechelen.
The Belgian Malinois breed is used as a working dog for tasks including detection of odors such as explosives, accelerants (for arson investigation), and narcotics; tracking humans for suspect apprehension in police work; and search and rescue missions. The U.S. Secret Service uses Belgian Malinois to guard the grounds of the White House.
    I hope you guys enjoy!
This channel is devoted to providing a window into the life of professional dog trainer, Stonnie Dennis. I talk about dog training, boarding, health, equipment, and all the things that go into owning and running a successful dog training and boarding kennel.
At our kennel we place special emphasis on helping dogs reach their full potential through the use of physically and mentally demanding activities. Our primary goal is to help families raise happy, healthy, well socialized, canine companions.

Great video because you explain that bloodlines are important. I am from The Netherlands. A lot of Malinois and Dutch Shepherd are sold from here to the US. Usually these are KNPV (police work) trained dogs. These dogs have a Bloodline Registration Number (BRN) and are not FCI purebreds. The purebreds are all right to handle but do display a lot of the characteristics you describe in the video. These dogs need a lot of time and exercise and preferably training (IGP, Agility, Mondio ring, Fly ball etc.). Dogs with a BRN registration are bred for police work. Do not get these dogs as a family pet. Most of them are perfectly friendly dogs. But I have seen quite a few that will snap at you when corrected or just fight you for dominance. So Stonnie is absolutely right. Meet the breeder and ask about the bloodline and demand certificates.

KNPV are bred strictly for working capacity. So if you did a DNA test itll likely have mixed breeds in there. FCI or ALC would be closer, if not entirely, purebred.

Sounds right to me. I had a super smart, athletic, female that I trained to do many amazing things. She could not be around other people or dogs. Absolutely hated my son in law and son. I have no doubt she would have killed any small animal she got a hold of.
Once in a while she would lash out ( attack) me for telling her what to do.... unfortunately she could never be trusted. She was obedient and well trained when I was looking or present. But she Certainly had a mind of her own, sneaky at stealing food AND sometimes willing to fight me to get her way.
In spite of all that, she was amazing and fun most of the time. Always happy to play fetch, frisbee, or go find numerous named items....amazing but dangerous

I love my malinois and she is crazy about me and only me. This breed is definitely challenging. High alert - barks at everything. Very fast recharge rate for sure. She stares at me all the time as if to say, “ok, what’s next Mom?” Social situations are challenging. No issues until someone makes a sudden move or simply looks her in the eyes. Protection switch activates! Blessed that she’s not a biter (but she is loud!) Not a random/reactionary biter anyway. She does give “nips” from time to time...but they’re gentle. So much personality and athleticism. She never ceases to amaze me with what she can do. She is a toy destroyer, but does not destroy anything that isn’t given to her to play with (leaves my stuff alone). Challenges: finding a place to board them. You have to find someone savvy with Mals so that they aren’t misunderstood and are properly cared for/exercised/instructed. Mine likes her big bro, but is uncomfortable with other (unknown) dogs. Bottom line...they’re a ton of work, but if you’re consistent and invest time, they will amaze you with their capabilities and make you feel like you are the most important thing in their world. The loyalty and adoration is unmatched. And mine is a total snuggle bug. She has to be in contact with me at all times when resting. That contact also lets her know when I’m on the move again so she can go wherever I’m going! She does not like to miss out on a thing. I will say, it was recently discovered that I cannot be in the room when she needs something done at the vet. She will alert bark incessantly at everyone. I step out of the room, and leave her brother in the room with her so that she isn’t so overwhelmed, and she does just fine during vaccinations and such. I can vouch that she is a very rough player. Her rescue dog big bro is so easy going, that he takes whatever she dishes out. She’s never hurt him however. She sounds vicious though! Definitely NO to dog parks.

Malinois require people that are very calm and never get annoyed otherwise the Mal won't respect them as pack leader. These days too many people have low energy mixed dogs that they call Malinois so people then think they can handle getting one... with 20x drive.

Great advice, love the way you read through those hilarious emails. I think its also worth saying that there are plenty of dogs that will help protect you, your family, or your property, without being as high drive, high energy, high recharge rate as a Mal or Dutch Shepherd. For one of many examples, there is the dog that I have, a Great Pyrenees, which needs exercise and stimulation but has a very low recharge rate--once you satisfy her with a fun walk or hike, she lays right down and settles in, relaxing and snuggling the rest of the day. She can hike all day with any human and is very athletic and graceful, but she doesn't have the constant need for supervision and she is very chill in the house. She also has very high bite inhibition and is gentle with dogs and people, until there is an actual real threat to her family, which we have seen her take action against instinctively, alert, and protect us like a bear. Pyrenees are very intelligent dogs and go into a completely different mode, from gentle giant to powerful ally and protector when needed, but I've never seen her try to snap at anyone or even chase anyone, and she is always happy to see guests we invite inside. Pyrs are by far not the only good breed for family life and protection, there are so many great dogs for such things out there that can be researched, but I think people default to the Mals because they see police and military videos with them and assume they therefore must be the best dog in every way for their own situation. Not fair to the dog, and naive of the family.

My Belgian Malinois husky mix is batshit crazy and reactive. Yesterday I took him on a hike, he ran all over the place like a mountain goat. That was not enough, so he also went swimming. He was following me on my kayak swimming. Then when I went home, he still wanted to fetch. My siberian husky and GSD where sleeping after all of that. Mine is over protective and reactive. I have struggled to train him and socialize him as a puppy. He started behaving aggressively towards strangers at a young age, 10 weeks. He gets a lot of exercise. I trained him to pull a dog sled and my bicycle. You are so correct about that recharge rate, lol. He took a short nap in the car and was ready to fetch for hours after hiking and swimming. I wish mine was more accepting of other dogs and people he does not know. He is a struggle. He wears a muzzle in public and at the vet. He got better about people, but not strange dogs. Mine is a very powerful dog and he is larger than a standard malinois and husky. Mine has not bitten anyone, because I took the precaution of muzzling him. He is not destructive and does not bite me at least. You can see him pulling my dog sled and other things in my video. IDK if I would get another. Mine was not well bred being from an accidental breeding.

Im going to assume the pups will have similar temperatures. 3 years ago i got a Great Pyrenees. Parents were wonderful! My pup is too. Our first Great Pyrenees is really sweet to us, buy dislikes when family show up to visit. She has never been anybody just hides in our bedroom. With her as a puppy I never did get to meet the parents. My motto now is don’t take a part that you don’t know what the parents are like. I guess we’ll see how this Mal is going to work out. Stonnie just gave an excellent commentary on why you shouldn't own one of these dogs IF, you are not consistent, if you are an average dog owner, if you don't have a lot of money and time to give towards the day to day high attention these dogs need. I almost hesitated using the term "average dog owner" because it would challenge a narcissistic person into wanting one of these high maintenance dogs.

I have an adult Belgian Shepherd mix that I adopted from a local shelter. He had dog aggression issues, and I was bitten hard by him from his pent-up frustration. I called an Animal Behaviorist to get to the root of the problem. This incident was caused by a highly reactive and spoiled dog that had gone into heat in my household. The roommate finally moved out with his dog, but he along with his dog had caused major collateral damage. For a mix, my dog didn't have high-strung energy, but he was confident, wouldn't back down on a fight, agile, fearless, and protective. His protective herding trait came out at a local dog park. A large Neapolitan Mastiff was eyeing and sniffing this little puppy. My Belgian Shepherd X got close to the puppy and lowered his head and eyed the Mastiff while growling. He is great around children, people, and finally other dogs I had to invest a lot of effort and time to socialize him. He's a wonderful dog and has slowed down considerably from age. Unfortunately, he has arthritis possibly caused by making a few fearless giant leaps from high embankments. However, I would never get a purebred Belgian Malinois because of their extreme energy and drive. Thank you Stonnie for educating people on ownership of the Belgian Malinois breed. We need less of them in animal shelters or being euthanized because of bite incidents.

My wife had a german rottweiler years ago.
She had to keep him in his outdoor kennel anytime she wasn't with him. He was never socialized properly, and he was super protective of her, and her yard. Only a handful of people could even pet him without being bit.
One day she was working in her garden and a stray pitbull, about 65-80lbs, bolting across her yard straight towards her and aggressive, probably 30-40 yards away, before she saw it, no time to get away.
Her 140lb german rot cleared it's 6ft kennel fence and hit it like a train, and slung it 10 feet. Stray ran off tail between it's legs.
Very good guard dog, but if you want in the city, definitely need to spend time on socialization and find a breeder with a relaxed bloodline.

Don't worry, Uncle Stonnie said that my dog would act like this (kind of thing)!

I was told the same thing about Australian cattle dogs and husky’s as well as Mals. I have all three. The husky and acd had an accident 5 years ago and we ended up with two Ausky pups as well. I wouldn’t change it for the world. All 5 of my dogs are extremely high energy and crazy drive and we have three kids as well. All of our dogs are amazing animals great with everyone in the family, and anyone who We introduce them to. I will say that none of them would be anything close to what they are without proper structure in their lives and a job.
Husky and her two pups jobs are to be lap dogs and love everyone and they do a fantastic job at that. None of our dogs ever destroy anything and have great temperaments as well.
Acd was the one who started it all. We even got him when we lived in an apartment. Supposedly a big no no. Best dog I’ve ever had until we got our Mal. Now I can confidently say I have the two best dogs I could have ever asked for. Such amazing breeds.
I don’t think it has anything to do with luck of the draw. It has everything to do with an owner who understands the breeds they decide to own and know what they need to be truly happy.
If you educate yourself on whatever breed you want then don’t let anyone discourage you from that breed. Just understand it may have specific needs vs other breeds. My dogs just want me to walk them and play with them and work with them on agility and protection work (acd agility, mal protection/detection). All of which I do in my spare time. My Mal has crazy drive when he’s working but when he’s home it’s time to love everyone and he knows it. I will forever have an Australian Cattle Dog and Belgian Malinois until the day I die. Don’t get me wrong I love our other three dogs just as much. But these two boys are with me everywhere I go and to be honest that’s specifically why I got them. I wanted some companions to share my family experiences with. The fact that I was able to train them to be the dogs I wanted in the end is a plus. But it’s not luck. It was a true understanding of our dogs and figuring out a routine for them to keep them happy and under control. Which isn’t anything crazy really at all. Just having a strict routine for these working breeds will make life so much easier on you and them.

I feel lack if bond with animals is correlated with lack of exposure and discipline. I have a German shorthair pointer mixed with Blue heeler, I let her know whats wrong whats right and when we have time we play. She is hella smart and cute to the bone. This is why i feel rescue dogs are the best kind, if it looks good to you when its a puppy and you are willing to put in the work, any breed is fine.

Play with chihuahuas L, sheps and saluki etc, even cats and rabbits. She's fully responsive to my commands and taken lots of hard work with her to get this way.

They definitely need a firm (though fair) hand. An insecure or dominant mal can very quickly become dangerous if they do not become secure in your leadership. Incredible for the right people, though. And you're right, if you startle a dog that defaults to protecting with its mouth they will understandably snap at you (hence the old adage not to bother a sleeping dog!)
Please remind people that a protection-trained animal is like a loaded gun with a mind of its own. You HAVE to know how to handle them, and be on it constantly.

That's the problem With breaders who advertised getting prises in competitions including prominently biting. They often select agressive dogs
Serrious breeders that bread typical Malinois have dogs that can be good family dogs but only for people who have the adapted life style and a very good knowledge and understanding of dog natural behaviour. The typical Malinois is very active and fast, need plenty of activity every single day, is a bit dominent but not agressive.

Very few malinois are good guard dogs, they are sport dogs. Mine puts on a big display in the car if I'm not there, however I doubt he would stand up to a real threat. They are high strung and needy. Mine got me by accident when I went down his throat to get a tube of liver sausage (plastic and all) and he continued to try eating it. He didn't mean to bite me, he just wanted to swallow the tube of liver sausage. Misses on a tug can be a problem from what I understand.

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 5 років тому +3

It's impossible to make an accurate statement about the characteristics of crossbred dogs. If you're not getting a dog that was bred for a specific temperament for generations, it's just down to luck how it will turn out. A cross can have any combination of the traits found in the parent breeds, and even some characteristics that neither parent breed has, simply by virtue of having a new combination of genes. (For example, crossbreeds can be much bigger than either parent.)

Stonnie, I don't think that u are being clear enough when it comes to owning a Mal.
They are NOT good dogs for most people. You MUST be a VERY STRONG LEADER!! this is NOT A dog for a first time owner or a family with young children.
These dogs need CONSTANT exercise, mental stimulation and attention. In the wrong hands, it's an accident waiting to happen
If someone feels they must have one, they should DEFINITELY HIRE A TRAINER!!!!!!!
Good Luck them, they will need it

Holy fuck ppl. The "problem" is that your dog doesn't get enough bite work. You need to train them when it is ok to bite and when it is not. If you don't then they will bite randomly because it's fun. Get a bottle of disinfectant and bandages same day you get the puppy and get to training. They will miss and bite wrong or paw you in the balls at full speed - it's all part of the fun owning a proper dog. Fast and agile and quick to bite.

Malinois were used by the mine workers to protectet themselves from thieves, that's where all the drive comes from. In fact, it's more common to see people forgetting that the "belgian malinois" it's actually called Belgian Shepherd, Malinois is one the variety.

Any dog can be a farm dog mals are literally referred to as malligators because they love to bite. Theyre one of the best protection dogs
