No challenge to ownership is implied.

Very interesting. I had heard about this but never knew the full story. It's amazing that they even dared to try this.
Have you watched the Major Fraud documentary about it? If not, I recommened you check it out. It's very interesting to see how Charles Ingram would play the game, compared to other people.

01:34 Look it up, there were actually FIVE top prize winners on the show's 15 year lifespan. Judith Keppel won her million in November 2000; David Edwards in April 2001; Robert Brydges did it in September 2001; Pat Gibson (the youngest of the UK winners) in April 2004 and finally there was Ingram Wilcox, the last one to become a Millionaire on the show aired in September 2006.
Interesting fact. One of the people who was in the "Fastest Finger" seats was Jeff Gross, who later won $US500,000 on the syndicated version.
Actually, Charles and Diana Ingram were big game show fans and especially of Millionaire. However, you imply that they plotted it when Diana went on, planning to put Charles on if she failed to win it all. IIRC, that wasn't what happened; they just happened to be big fans of the show, and so they both wanted to be contestants. Diana's brother had been a contestant before her, and she was bitter when she failed to win more money than him. The main reason Diana and Tecwen Whittock decided to help Charles cheat to the top prize is because he struggled early on and wanted him to win more money than Diana or her brother. As far as I know, the plot didn't begin until Charles' second night on the show; I don't think it went back to Diana's appearance, and certainly not back to her brother's game.

They got 18 months in Prison. Some of your facts are incorrect about this case. His wife only coughed once during the show, it was Whittock who did all the coughing. Also the show NEVER aired. It got pulled and was only ever seen during a documentary about the cheat scandal.
Yeah his wife coughed to indicate the Craig David answer because Whittock didn't know it and wasn't coughing. Whittock did the rest
I forgot to say the 18 months imprisonments were suspended, so they didn’t actually spend time in prison.

Charles Ingram decided to try again in Who wants to be the Millionaire show. He told his wife and fellow friend Tecwen Whittock to fart instead of cough to give him the right answer this time so that he doesn't get caught. He let his wife and friend eat lots of junk foods so that they can supply many farts for winning a million pounds again but this time he couldn't able to win a single pound as he answered wrong in the first question. before leaving the stage reporter asked Charles the reason for loose which is as follows
Reporter: Hello Charles, what went wrong this time?
Charles: Well I read the options loudly so that I could get the right answer from my friend and wife but they farted in all the options so I didn't understand which one was right.

I am surprised they were not jailed for this. It is quite a serious fraud.
The evidence was really fucking thin. They basically used the media to create public opinion against mr Ingram to a point where they could have him crucified. His bank account bled for our sins and all you have is mockery.
Trust me, had this happened on an American game show:
a) The show would be taken off the air immediately.
b) Charles, Diane, and Tecwin would all be in prison for life.
In the United States, it is federally illegal to rig any game show.

If it hadn't happened literally just before the 9/11 attacks, it probably would have been a bigger international story...wasn't until 2004 that 20/20 covered the story of Ingram's cheating here in the US. Also, it's been speculated that if Ingram had been content to quit w/a lesser amount, even £500K, he might not have gotten caught, since winning the top prize is sure to generate more attention regardless.

Charles had multiple degrees and belonged to Mensa, so he should have been bright, however you can get a run of shit questions, for example pop culture references, most smart people don't know this as they tend to concern themselves with useful knowledge, who cares who had a number 1 single with such a such.
He cheated in the most obvious ways though, and got greedy to, they reckon had he walked at 125,000 (I think it was?) he'd have got away with it.

I think that if he had bailed at $250,000, he would've gotten away with his fraud.

Probably not as egregious as this whole incident was, but what about that episode of Family Fortunes where the Fast Money round had a family member answer "turkey" for each question (before lo & behold, it actually getting points)? Was that ever exposed as a cheating? I remember seeing one family member begin to glare at the "turkey guy", as if perhaps saying, "You are blowing our scheme!".
Someone with a more sophisticated scam, like a subdermal implant, might have gotten away scotch-free.
