When I was poor living in the streets at 7 years old with my mom. In the cold east coast winter of 1993 a lady was generous enough to let my mom and I stay in her really bad condition, dirt floor basement with no heat. As a poor kid I use to dig through the garbage and found an old school small screen TV that actually worked. I took it home and hooked up a clothes hanger to the TV in an attempt to get channels. I was fortunate enough to get only one channel which would play reruns of World Strongman over and over. The channel would constantly play prime Bill Kazmaier competing. Bill Kazmaier was my hero that gave a hopeless kid hope.

To put this in perspective, the official competition world record for Hercules Hold is 82 seconds...Magnus at 56 beat that record by 20 seconds. And Bill, who has had a bunch of shoulder injuries, still got 18 seconds at 65. And the one who holds the record is Mark Felix, who is 53. That's some old man strength.

WSM is still stuck in 1990. It's like they never heard of Live Streaming. They air the show on TV long after the competition is already done and everyone heard about the placings on social media. They need some people there with IT skills to change that.

Magnus is a demi-god in disguise. I expected him to do well but once he passed 1 minute 15 seconds I began to suspect that the entire thing was going to be revealed as joke. When the columns fell apart and it became clear that he really had been holding them so long, I was astounded. I've followed this competition since it began with Geoff Capes and in all those years I have never seen anyone as remarkable as Magnus Ver Magnusson. He never had a supremely muscled body, he never had massive size, yet he beat them all with apparent ease. He would have won 5 times but for that simple yet shocking mistake with that replica of the Husafel Stone. The greatest strongman ever!

You can tell Kaz went back in a time machine before and during that lift. When he dropped the handles it’s almost like he snapped back and had a moment of reflection. What he did was incredibly impressive but you know he still wanted more! And how about Magnus - that was amazing. The roar of the crowd, these events are fantastic.

Kaz was very amazing at intimidating other competitors in his day. Magnus in his day was notorious for not being intimidated. Love these dudes and I love that this happened. I actually WANT MORE OF THIS. Old men doing strongman challenges is actually amazing for this sport. Everyone I knows of an old man that is strong as hell! It's not a myth. I don't think people understand that in this event what Magnus did is shocking even by strongman standard. No, it was not the record at all, there are pro strongmen today that couldn't beat Magnus in this though. I love that both of these men are still involved. Magnus as a judge is FUCKING perfect!!!

Jon Páll was still the greatest character of them all. Not only was he the greatest showman but he also contrary to what Bill did, encouraged his competitors, always, shouting at them to keep going etc. Really good sports person. Plus he was the strongest of them all. Even with all the huge competition in Bill, Geoff Capes, Magnús, Jamie Reeves and others, Jón Páll almost won every WSM tournament he competed in, plus and what is often forgotten, that fantastic Highlander tournament which was huge at the time and no less of a tournament than WSM, Jón Páll won it like 4 times I think just like 4 WSM titles.
If kaz was against someone his age he would've won. 10 years at their stages in life is a huge difference.

I’ve always had a lot of respect for Magnus. After I got out of the Army I started watching Strongman competitions and he would win all the time. He wasn’t the biggest, but he was the best during many competitions. He displayed a true Viking heart which would make our ancestors proud. Even now, he shows his grit and honors his heritage with an awesome display of strength. One of the greats!

Agreed. I don't think most people understand how adored the older strongmen actually are. Yeah they lost a bit (Odd is a freak in the same way Mark Felix is) but all the old time strongmen are STILL stronger then most everyone "casual" they meet. Not even talking about internationally. Every town I have lived in there seems to exist at least one old man that can do some shit strength-wise that is legendary in that town. Danny Hodge is a perfect example, few people know him now, but he is still asked to crush apples.

I've seen this clip at least 5 times now. One of the most inspiring moments in strength athletics history. When you see the crowd, row after row standing up, is the stuff legends are made of. You'd not have seen better in a scripted Hollywood movie. For any of you who watches soccer, it would be like a retired national hero coming out of retirement at say, 45 yo, going to a World Cup with his national team and scoring 5 goals in the grand final. Crowd would cheer this guy forever in legends. This is exactly what Magnus has done here, he has shown once again why he is a 4x WSM champion and one of Iceland's (and the World's) greatest prouds.
Nobody expected anything from Magnus and he blew everybody's mind. His performance was incredibly inspirational.
Nothing but respect for those guys.

Good on the announcer for mentioning that Kazmaier wasn't allowed to compete in the World's Strongest Man for several years. Kazmaier would probably have five or six titles if he hadn't been kept out during the prime of his career.

Bill Kazmaier at his peak was strong as fuck even compared to modern athletes. Few men have achieved a powerlifting total that high. If prime Bill Kazmaier competed today, he would definately be able to win. Only reason he and other athletes of that time didn't overhead press as much or lift as heavy stones as modern athletes is because they didn't do as much dedicated strongman training back then.

That was one of the most epic moments I've witnessed in strongman.
Knew Kaz was toast as soon as he started. High shoulders, protracted scapulas, and allowing the pillars to pull him apart is no good. Magnus on the other hand had his shoulders down, retracted scapulas, and was pulling the pillars in to him. Good show of understanding and skill on his part.
Magnus had the advantage of having done this event back in his competitive days. I don't think the Hercules Hold had been invented yet in Kaz's time.

Ok... they took 20 kilos off each side, 44 lbs per side out of the lift. YES, it was impressive ! However, if you know grip, or have ever trained it, you know 1¼ lbs... less than 1 kilo can make a HUGE difference. Do not get me wrong still very impressive for both men but if you take 88 lbs off a grip event, that is a huge difference.

It was good to see Bill Kaz and Magnus after so many years do what they do best.
This kind of event was Magnus's thing. He was never the biggest guy, but his stamina was freaking unreal.
Mental strength and Stamina. This was his thing yes.

To be either Kaz or Magnus and hear the roar of the crowd just one more time would give me chills, make me emotional and I could die happy knowing I heard that sound just one more time…
this right here brought me back to being a teenager..seeing these two inspired me to get into lifting and implement that during sports in high school and training into pro wrestling. kaz did that he went into wcw..man was a fkn beast in the ring compared to the regular wrestlers during that time. absolutely fantastic seeing this gods in the strongman world not only perform this and at this level, but also seeing the magic they still have inside.

I love everything strongman and have for decades. It is so inspiring and there is something raw and visceral about being strong and lifting all types of implements. It's power. The physical kind that is just so dominating.

Clash of the Grandpa's. Both could still lift more with their little fingers than I'll ever lift in my life.
Kaz does the crazy stare we saw in the videos of him squatting in WSM early 80s. My late father was a weightlifter and admired Kaz's strength at the time. I'll always remember that.
Both are great champions and true gentleman and sportsmen. Pure class.
